what's up with the service costs?? What could I expect with a 60K CS? Is the Porsche experience really worth it? Need 3rd winter car and tow strong tow vehicle, maybe I'll get rid of the toy m3cic, and go for newer CS or turbo. Any thoughts??
The service cost is expensive if you ask me, but it is a major service (BMW offers free maintanance now because they don't do really major services anymore; just smaller services and oil changes). The list of what they checked and adjusted is pretty thourough. My Cay S is under warranty so anything they find wrong is their problem. I would suggest getting something with way fewer than 60K miles on it for that reason alone. I mean, 2 year old Cayenne with 60K is very high mileage. Mine is two years old and still hasn't quite hit 30K. Do you really want to pay for out of warranty repairs??? If you just need a 3rd vehicle for towing I see no reason to get a Cayenne. Why not just get a cheaper to maintain American or Japanese truck? Is the Porsche experience worth it? That's something only you can answer for yourself. I think it is, but my Cayenne S is my primary car. It's a lot of fun to drive (and obviously a Turbo would be even more fun). Yes, they tow a lot, but so do a lot of cheaper vehicles. Having a Porsche as a 3rd car is great if it's a 911 that you have for fun. A Cayenne Turbo with double the miles it should have simply for a towing vehicle makes no sense to me. Just my opinion though.
I'm waiting to hear if they can certify the 60K CS, and for a low price like 35K, looked at used X5s same price, slightly lower tow cap., but lower service costs. like you said my m3cic is the 3rd vehicle, presently have audi a6q 2.7t for most daily driving to baseball fields, work etc, but need tow vehicle. tried American trucks, but can't see driving it everyday. So far friend traded me his tundra double cab for my audi, so I'm in no rush. Still think about trading audi+bmw for CS, but can't give up the two puffs for one yet. I've been pondering this for awhile...thanks for your feedback.
Fair enough. I'll be interested to see if they'll certify a Cayenne with 60K miles. I'm a bit confused though. Are you planning on using the Cayenne just for towing, as an everyday driver or some combination of both? I thought you were saying that you wanted the Cayenne just for towing. I guess it depends on what you do with the other cars though. If I was driving it everyday I'd definitely say the Cayenne is a good choice.
steve...thanks for digging up that info. thought i'd be getting 3-3.5 years of warranty, not 2. still better than no warranty on a private sale. haven't gotten a price still. this would be an every day car year round. Wife drive a sienna, kinda like a truck, but super comfortable. My toy, convertible m3, still in the stable. Steel grey w/imola red interior 6sp. w/hardtop. Could be convinced to let it go for an 05 CS with panoramic roof, but o4 may be tempting...like I said, using a friends tundra DC for now...status quo...thanks
Porsche introduced the manual S option in 04, probably in response to demand from existing Porsche (911 etc) owners who weren't comfortable with auto. From looking at the Porsche UK website, I would estimate the proportion of manual S's in Britain is about 5% of sales, so they're not at all common. I much prefer the way it handles and get better fuel consumption too.
My 04 S has "old"-style navigation (maps on CD not DVD in the trunk - this change came in late 2004). This means it can't fit all of Europe on 1 disk and you can't play a single CD without losing nav.
BTW, does anyone know whether "old"-style nav has TMC built in or available as an upgrade?
Also, does anyone know exactly what the "facelift" Cayenne will look like and/or are there any pix available online?
This is so true, I just imported an 06 Cayenne from US for around $25,000 cheaper than it cost in Alberta.Truly a shame how much Canadians are being gauged by the dealers or by Porsche AG. Shame on them!
Full warranty but converts to Canadian conditions.Basically same warranty but in Kilometers not miles.Dealer said they would not give me a loaner though (like I care).
I have a 2005 Cayenne V6 - got it 5/2005 - has 13000 miles.
I am getting the indicator for 1st service in 200 miles.
I read here that costs can vary so I have called my local dealer, in Englewood, NJ & a few others in NJ trying to find out what the service consists of & what is cost.
The only answer I got - not from my dealer - was $500+tax for oil change, tire rotation, brake cleaning & full inspection. Sounds pretty high to me.
Can this car just be brought to Jiffy Lube or a local Porsche mechanic for oil change or will this mess with my warranty?
Anyone recommend a good priced local dealer for service.
I love the car & we havent really had any problems, except: - key fob does suck - unlock / lock is really a pain - plenty of trim pcs inside have fallen off: hood release latch, trunk latch molding & a few others - when sitting in the front drivers seat & looking down, right where the floor mat starts I see open space with visible wires - is this normal?
I got my 2004 Cayenne S CPO so I didn't do the 15,000 mile service, but I just did the 30,000 mile one. It cost $1,600 which is basically a standard fee for the service. Obviously, the 15,000 mile service is less extensive so I would say $500 is entirely reasonable. Take it to Jiffy Lube??? I would never consider that. Regularly scheduled service for a vehicle under warranty should always be preformed by the dealer IMHO. Especially for a Porsche. I haven't had any of the problems you mentioned, and I don't see any wires.
A national newspaper is looking to interview Porsche and BMW owners who use their car for “everyday driving,” from going to the grocery store to commuting to and from work, instead of just using the car during the weekends for nice drives. Please send an e-mail to ctalati@edmunds.com no later than Monday, August 28, 2006 by 2:30 PM PT/5:30 PM ET containing your daytime contact information and what car you drive.
If I may suggest, you may just opt for the oil change and not do the "15000 mile service".
Other than the oil change, everything else is just "inspection" for which I have high degree of disregard in terms of the value for money. Oil change is the only real work here. You should be able to get the oil change done at dealer at approx. $ 200-$225.
I've been looking at a 2005 V6 with navigation and 18K miles. I'm being offered $41K for it, but I'm thinking $39K. It's in good shape with no dents, dings, or scratches. Is $41K too much or should I go lower? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does it only take premium unleaded and is the insurance premium high?
I would not mind the maintenance costs of Porsche (I knew it would be expensive when I bought it (2003 Cayenne S), what bugs me is the shortcomings of the vehicle after the 'repair':
Breaks where excellent in the beginning, but were factory recalled - now they squeek (and this is normal according to the local Porsche dealer)
Air Conditioning smells of vinegar for the first 2 minutes (and this is normal according to the local Porsche dealer)
Transmission needs revving up to 1200-1500rpm when the car is cold before the car moves, as the transmission fluid has settled (normal according to the local Porsche dealer, nothing they can do)
Tires wear is very high - every 10.000 miles they are due
Comfort Memory Package keeps on resetting to factory presets - can not be fixed
Parts on the interior are coming loose and falling off (they all get fixed free of charge, but 22 visits to the shop in 3.5 years is excessive.
The sad part is that Porsche USA or Porsche Deutschland does nothing about it, their point is that if it gets repaired, the problem is resolved (they forget that the customer is not happy about the poor quality of the $75000 car!!!) :lemon:
Squeaking brakes are normal, not matter what the make...but then again, they can be made to squeak less. I brought mine in ...and they have been fine ever since.
Air conditioning condensation ( water in the system) will smell like vinegar or fungus.....and this happens in many vehicles too. EVen my new Honda Odyssey.
The car is heavier, so let the engine warm up a few seconds, then go. Also, remmeber, there are over 35 computers on the thing, so it takes time to boot up and synchronize.
Tire wear and brake wear is high on larger vehicles. My mechanic says he does his suburban brakes every 12 months. Mine (cayenne) brakes have lasted 3 years and 36,000 miles. I found a mechanic that is factory traiined, and does it for hundreds less. Not much can be done with the tire wear, since these are performance tires. MY tires on the AcureTL ( yokohamas summer tires) lasted only 16 months....and the dealer said the same thing.
Comfort memory package can be set and left alone. However, if you have been bringing the vehicle to the dealership, and they had to disconnect the battery, then it resets to zero.
Parts of any car will fall off with usage...though it needs to be defined what kind of usage. I have parts fall off in the Jaguar, Acura, Toyota, HOnda, and Cayenne. OF course, they should all fix the darn things..so they never come off....!!! BUt once it is secured too tightly, then it is hard to remove them.
You are overlooking the fact that it is the best SUV /sports car... bar none.
I appreciate your comments, however beg to differ. Brakes on my 911 or MB GL450 don't squeek, AC smell is not happening in those vehicles, nor do I have to heat up their engines first and items falling off a $70.000 car with less than 30.000miles are not acceptable to me.
Whenever it drives, it is a sensational car and a great SUV, however the service provided by Porsche in terms of dealing with the fact that the early models (mine is from Feb 2003) are full of bugs and are not will to do anything about it is pretty sad. I had 18 shop visits and repairs in a little over three years - I am sure you would not consider that reasonable either.
I would have expected a company with the reputation of Porsche to react the same way a Four Seasons Hotel will react if you stay at their hotels and experience rude staff, dirty rooms, bad meals - you don't pay for it and they invite you back at their expense to proof that the bad experience was unusual. If you have a chewy, overcooked $40 steak at your favorite restaurant, you will not have to pay for it, they will fix it - so why is it different for Porsche dealing with a $70.000 car??? :lemon:
If you have a chewy, overcooked $40 steak at your favorite restaurant, you will not have to pay for it, they will fix it - so why is it different for Porsche dealing with a $70.000 car???
I think the difference works out to about $69,960 - not counting tips.
Seriously, refunding the price of 1 steak out of 100 in 1 day is a little more trivial than refunding the price of 1 Cayenne out 1 in 1 week. A restaurant manager won't need quite as much convincing that a problem exists and a refund is desirable (i.e. merely the word of a customer) than a Porsche dealer.
It is well known by now that the '03 and '04 models have a lot of bugs with them. Some can be easily fixed, some will probably always be around. What Porsche did is to rectify these problems in the '05 and 06 models. The later ones have very high build quality. I guess the lessson learned here is: don't rush out to buy a first or second year model.
When I bought my Cayenne I expected to have a pretty good resale value, maybe not as good as a 911, but still better than Mercedes, BMW etc.
For the last few weeks I have been trying to sell my Cayenne S and despite the fact than I am advertising below KBB lowest private party rating (they have Excellent, Good and Poor quality ratings and though the car is excellent, I am advertising below the poor rating even though the car looks like out of the shop) I have received no calls (FYI, KBB is about E-$46k/G-$44k/P-$42k), went down to $39K. Trade-in and Carmax offered me $35k/$32k respectively.
Now I saw a 2004 Cayenne S from a dealer advertised at $36k - has anyone else had similar problems selling their Cayenne? Anyone with a brilliant idea on how to sell it at a decent rate (I would hate to loose 50% or $35,000 after just over 3 years) ....
Cross check your numbers with Edmunds' True Market Value and rethink your advertising. Maybe you need to list it on Craigslist in ritzy neighborhoods or try an ad sheet specializing in exotics. If there's a sports car club in your area, check with them for ideas.
I think your experience is pretty much where the market is, unfortunately. One reason is the high gas prices over the past few months, another reason is due to the issues with the '03-'04 models. Currently, there are a lot of '04 Cayennes for sale in the market place, so the large supply base drives down prices.
Hi boys, I am an older female who has driven Porsches since before most of you were born. 1960 saw me in a '58 356A Coupe. My first Cayenne Turbo was 2004, 30,000 miles in 11 months and I wanted the rear view camera and pano roof....so.....BIG HIT on trade. Exact figures were about $30,000 diff. But I got a roof, camera, wooden gearshift and every other option. Maintenance is actually not as expensive as one might thiink. Back in 1958, my VW required oil changes every 1500 miles, valves adjusted every 3000 miles and when one figures inflation etc., it is cheaper to maintain a Cayenne....depreciaton excepted. Tires...I took the summer tires off my 2005 Turbo at 20 miles and put on Khumo all season tires. Wear rating is about 460. At 20,000 miles they still have at least 1/2 their tread left. Mucch better than my original tires on my 2004 which I replaced at 18,000 miles. Hope to hear some more on this site.........Fantine
I remember adjusting my VW Beetle valves every 3,000 miles but don't remember changing the oil that often (probably because I didn't; then again, mine were late 60's models). Welcome!
Hi ya, High, good to hear from you. No trips since floating part of the Green River in April although I'm heading back East next week to visit family and do a road trip with my sister in her New Beetle (not a diesel TDI, but it's finally running good at 120k). I did get a lot done around the house this summer.
Remember that the Europeans change their oil every 10,000 miles or longer and think we're crazy for harping on 3,000 mile oil changes. I'm on a 7,500 mile interval on the Quest with plain oil and it's lasted 113,000 miles so far. :shades:
Your "problem" isn't Cayenne specific. All high end cars are difficult to sell used when only a couple of years old. You can't offer the financing, warranty, new car smell, gourmet coffee, etc. that a dealer can. There are few enough buyers anyway at this price point and most of them need "help" financing, etc. This morning's Boston Globe has a '06 Silver S500 Mercedes for 55K asking by a private seller. (This car had an MSRP north of 80K just one model year ago.)
Enjoy the car for a few more years or get it throughly detailed and carefully target your advertizing.
I am having the same exact issues with my 05 Cayenne! The dealership in Beverly Hills has been horrible. I have even went to the Regional Manager in Los Angeles and he doesn't even return my phone calls after meeting with him in person. Have you had any luck trying to figure out what the issue is? I lose my base, treble, surround sound and AP setting about once a week and you have to reset them for the RADIO, CDS, CDC settings. Thanks for any information you may have...
Hi, everyone. As you've probably noticed, we have been trying to refine the discussions into more narrowly focussed topics. Our objective is twofold. We want to make it easier for people seeking specific information about their vehicles to find it easily and without having to wade through hundreds or thousands of postings.
To those ends, we will be shutting down the general make/model discussions and work exclusively with specific issues. This requires us to populate the make/model subsections with relevant, interesting and timely topics. Rather than having the hosts simply create boilerplate topics for each make/model, we feel that you, the owner, the make/model enthusiast and the prospective buyer can best judge what those topics should be.
You can help by adding a discussion (it's easy!) or suggesting one here.
To add a discussion, click on the last link in the "You are here" line at the top of this page. That will take you to the topic page for this make/model. Review the list of topics and click on the "Add discussion" link when you've decided what topic you'd like to add. Follow the directions and you're done! Feel free to add more than one. Just avoid duplicating existing topics and try not to make it TOO specific!
Your help and continued participation in the Forums is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
"Porsche dealers in the US have been told sell existing stocks of the Cayenne but that no new cars will be supplied to the US in 2007. This decision came after sales of the Cayenne had declined sharply in the past two years in America."
Hi - any thoughts on why my 2004 Cay S would suddenly be getting poor mileage ? It only has 27k miles. I was getting about 18-19 mpg on the highway and roughly 15-16 mpg combined. Now it's like 13.5 mpg. Could it be the gasoline I put in for this tank ? What about the plugs ? The oil is almost due for a switch but I didn't think that affected fuel economy. Any thoughts appreciated. Aside from that, I love the beast.
Sucks to see that the Cayenne forums have died down... I just purchased a CPO Cayenne S (2004) this past weekend. Absolutely love it love it love it. I have (believe it or not) been reading nearly ALL the messages in this forum (yes that's over 1500), to see what everyone has been talking about. Really stinks that its died down quite a bit in the past few months, but I guess that's how it works in the car business.........
One question... does anyone know how to make it so when you hit teh lock button on the remote you can set it so it doesn't honk the horn? Its kind of annoying and I would rather it just flash its lights. I've read the manual a bunch fo times (skimmed thru some of it), and didnt' see it anywhere....
Also anyone use HBL in Northern Virginia? Its teh closest dealer for me and just wondering how their service is and any perks they have (free car washes, free loaners, etc).
I"m glad to be part of this forum (hope its not completely dead yet!)
Unfortunately this vehicle does not give lots of access to a menu to set various options. I believe that the horn, and lots of other settings, have to be done at the dealer with their specialized computers.
Ah, that really stinks. Its probably teh only annoying thing I have fonud on teh Cayenne. That and the fact that hitting next on the steering wheel goes to teh actual next radio station in numerical order, not the presets, which is really dumb, this car is absolutely perfect. Such an amazing car, and I think we forget how heavy this car is, and how great it performs... love it love it love it.
