Highender, I think if people want the electronics and 4x4 credibility but don't care about performance, they would be better off buying a Touareg V6. Or they could get a fully loaded Touareg V8 for the same price as a Cayenne V6.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
If you are ever required to install front license plate frame be Very Careful...On the Touareg the hoses for the headlamp washing system rests right behind that area...TSB urges the use of 3M Double sided tape...
  • joanmkjoanmk Member Posts: 9
Thanks for the information. I'm really going to try to avoid the front plate. But now I'll be very careful if I'm "required". This car is so great and more fun to drive everyday even a front plate won't be much of a problem. Everyone that sees it (most for the first time-there aren't many around) think it's beautiful. So do I!!
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
sorry did not respond to your posts sooner. Yes, it may make more sense value-wise to go for the Toureg V8 than the Cay V6. But somebody will always go for the prestige/panache of the Porsche emblem.

     to all:
In 1978, while living down in Barraquilla, Colombia, I had to drive to Cartagena, about 3 hours west, only 120 miles or so. The highway is called Carretera de Americas, and it is full of potholes, some 1 ft deep, some 4 feet across. You really cannot go 200 ft without slowing down or else you get your fillings knocked out.You really need a 4x4 but don't need the acceleration nor top speed( unless you need to evade the cocaine cartels) Gas is expensive, and you know what car was considered a luxury car ??(they do have mercedes and BMWs, but what other car?) Ford Grenada !!LOL...LOL. When my dad imported it, the mayor and police chief requested a ride in it.. In 1979 grenadas went for 6000-$7000, when he sold it used he got $12000 for it...LOL. The point of my story is: our perception of what is needed or good or standards in general only apply to the US. We are about 5% of the world population. The rest of the world (95%) have a greater need for a V6 or turbo 4cylinder 4x4 than we do. By the way, in tropical Colombia, there are torrential rains, but no rain/sewage gutters. Once I had to drive through town after heavy rains, and it was like a 2ft deep river everywhere, going maybe 30 mph. I tried to cross perpendicular to the flow in a Renault station wagon, and nearly got carried down stream!! Scared me to hell. Wish I had a SUV back then.
In the Middle East, gas can be had for a song, but no real freeways to do any extended 130 mph runs, but a lot of sand drifts, so need true 4x4 ability. Plus they can afford the price tag, the 30,000+ royals and their entourage have ALLOWANCES of millions per month.

I can fax you the Technical Service Bulletin on this install if you like....
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
glad to hear you have a Cay. It is an amazing vehicle. This months' 4x4 Offroad did a review on the "S", and said it was the fastest SUV they ever tested ~!!! It says a lot of great things, about 10 times the amount of negative. This being a 4x4 magazine, where they have extreme offroad vehicles going over ten wet 3ft thick logs, then thru 4 ft of wet clay mud, with monster tires...etc. All these vehicles are not even onroad legal !! So to this extreme off-road crowd, the Cayenne is too tame and cannot handle the off-road situations that are presented to them. However, most of their extreme trucks also failed to complete the mud portion, and several trucks had broken axles going over the logs.
I am honored that they even considered it an offroad car.
  • jrkimjrkim Member Posts: 10
Thanks, I will have to check it out. I'm one of those who have no intention of doing any hard-core offroading, but the Cayenne was still the vehicle that best suited my needs. It even makes commuting enjoyable!

Regarding the V6, I'm sure it makes sense for other places like Europe with high gas prices. I guess we'll see how it does in the U.S.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
Four Wheeler, Nov.2003, and article on pp32. Boy they had vehicles that looked like tractors and straight out of the Mad Max, in another level, not in same class as the ML,Cay,X5.
4Wheel &Offroad, Oct.2003, said "fear this 4x4". (as a compliment). and they gave rave reviews of the Toureg.
Truckin'SUV, Oct.2003 said " this Cay S raises the bar for other luxury SUV's.....and raises it by quite a lot."

I just feel that those who ding/complain about the Cay's lack of laser cruise, styling, or 13 mpg city, are missing the point. Its engine is state of art.....more in the realm of super exotic sports cars(a la MB SLR, carrera GT). In the streets, it is the speed....SPEED...period. No ands, ifs, ors,or buts, just accelerator to the metal, see you at the finish line adrenaline. See FAST and FURIOUS.

jrkim, I'm glad you are enjoying your car. I love driving it, and know that if need be, we could traverse rivers and boulders and mud, etc. What an amazing , do all , car !!!
  • mudman2mudman2 Member Posts: 152
Well I'm over 5k miles now, the engine really loosened up at about 4k.

I changed the air filters, put clear side markers on, and am waiting an exhaust change.

On the S the filter change is dramatic especially on low end pickup, not so noticable on the TT I understand.

Mine is a daily driver, but I do have a periodic 3.5 hr college run. I get 14.6 around town, 19 on the longer range runs, mostly at 80 plus mph.

The fastest I have been is 130 so far, absolutely stable and with some legs left. No one beats me on the TP (jeff this means TurnPike), the 60 to 100 acceleration is wild.

I still do not have my hitch fitted, cannot get a solid price.

Rear drip was fixed, 1 air suspension error (no fault found).

A great experience just gets better all the time.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
Great to hear a fellow enthusiast's on road adventures. You have exceeded my top speed record. I must go to the deserts to try for top speed.
I thought about the filter change, and I know BMC makes good hi flow filters. I think K&N filters are better, but what do you guys think ? What did you use ?
I read that Porsche placed 2 stage catalytic converters and a very restrictive muffler which made all Cayennes' satisfy the Low Emission Vehicle criteria. However, this restricts the power. Changing air filter and exhaust may net you some extra horses, (20-30 ?) .
Still considering the wider wheels, but decided not to get the sport techno , maybe the BBS. Still thinking. I am waiting for the 15,000 mile marker before I change the air filter. Exhaust or Powerchip may come later. They want anywhere from 2000 to $2400 for the power chip, so I'm still thinking.

Mine is a daily driver too. I'm getting about 13 mpg in city, but astounding 19 mpg on freeway. This is close to a Toyota Previa 4 cylinder minivan, and better than a lot of V6 or V8 SUVs. Simply awesome, considering the capabilities of this car. The people who complain about the mileage have not looked at this objectively..... It is no Toyota corolla, and should be compared with like SUVs in terms of fuel economy. I was looking at the new Mazda RX8, 2980 lbs, rotary engine, aerodynamic, but got only 19 to 21 mpg !!!!!!!!! This cayenne does wonders....!
  • mudman2mudman2 Member Posts: 152
    Yup, truly amazing.

I used the BMC filters, got them from Fabspeed where I will get either cat bypass or full exhaust.

Chips are to much at the moment, I will wait for that I think.

I might get a set of 19's for summer and change the turbo's to winter tires.

    fun fun fun
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
    fun, fun,fun....!

yes, maybe I'll get the BMC also, as K&N still does not have a filter for the Cay. I'll go to fabspeed and see. Yes, powerchips are a little too much at this moment too. I'm still trying to get a good price on the wheels.

    Everybody:
Let us know what your newest adventure is in the Cay..........

I have the electrically operated one on my Turbo. It was factory fitted for 700GBP. Very smart and totally vanishes when retracted, even the electric socket vanishes as well. Just towed my caravan (trailer) for 480 miles and averaged 60 mph for the trip. Got 12 mpg overall for it. These are UK figures. Trailer is a twin axle and weighs in at 1800Kg.

    Happy Cayenneing

Damn Harry your making me jealous !

I bet if I still lived over there, my local dealer in "Jarrow" would have one (yes this is a joke) but I can't get one here, I am going in tonight to argue about the price but I am betting the service manager has left for the weekend by the time I get there.... I think he sometimes avoids me...don't know why, must be the accent. I divent na !

I discovered another great aspect of the Cayenne. My father-in-law had prostate surgery, and on the way back for a checkup, I forgot that the setting was on sport and went over a bump....ouch...he was in pain. Quickly I switched the ride control to comfort, and then went thru some bumps with no problems. He loved it, and marveled at the versatility of the car !!! You can drive it like a sports car when you are by yourself, and then take frail elderlies to the hospital in complete comfort :) Made me look like a heroe.

"This S.U.V. is best enjoyed from the inside out."

Aren't all cars best enjoyed driving them rather than admiring their reflection in plate glass windows as you cruise past the store fronts? Unless you're a detail hound, don't you spend the vast majority of your time inside your ride?

    Really is neat.

That is so good, I wonder why its isn't offered over here ?

Do you still have the full tow capacity ?
  • harryrogers1harryrogers1 Member Posts: 40
As far as I know there isn't any restrcition on tow capacity. It's offered as an option to the removable hitch.

Mind you I'm still waiting for my mats. Got the car in June and still nothing.

Overall delighted with it. Best car I've ever had. (This is my 20th motor).

Hi guys! I didn't get the roof transport system when I ordered my Cayenne. I am now considering it but I haven't been able to see a clear picture of it. Does it block the sunroof? Some of the pics seem to show that. I know it might block when in actual use but when not carrying anything can they be pushed toward the back of the roof? Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
Yes, the roof transport system is quite versatile. It is adjustable and you can move it back and forth (several settings). If you climb up on a chair you can see the lock areas. When you don't need it you can take the whole thing off !! So it would have less wind resistance. I don't have a photo, but you could see it on pp 114 of the Cayenne pamphlet/info book. It does not have to block the sunroof.

The people at Porsche just did a Cayenne Crossing Drive for Hope, a road tour that benefits cancer research. They went with the roof rack and roof transport box, and still went 130mph (near Interstate 15), then went offroad in the Mojave Desert..!
  • harryrogers1harryrogers1 Member Posts: 40
My Nav system has gone all faint on me. Its like someone put out the lights and lit a candle half a mile away. Tried the brightness setting and it doesnt change anything. Back to the dealership next week unless I'm doing something silly.

Not just the Nav, but Radio, Phone etc

    Harry
  • mudman2mudman2 Member Posts: 152
has it already fixed itself this morning ?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
This has not happened to me yet, but it sounds like a monitor/screen problem. It is a highly sophisticated system, which allows you to custom adjust a lot of things. Perhaps its just the brightness/contrast control?? Hope you can resolve it .

  • jrkimjrkim Member Posts: 10
There are two forward positions which are over the sunroof, only one of which can be used. There is a rear position, one 9" forward of that, one 16" forward, and one 19" forward (18" behind the sunroof). Only one of the latter can be used. I do think it looks funny with them both in the back (ymmv), but, as highender mentioned, they are easy enough to remove.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
Hi , how do you like your car? Any adventures/stories/people asking you questions?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
hey, I still want to take the Cay out for a long trip, but so far have not. We are planning to go to LA (6hr drive)and Las Vegas(another 4 hrs) but my wife says in the Suburban. I'm going to try to talk her into the Cay....
So how was the long trips for you ? Was it a blast?
  • jrkimjrkim Member Posts: 10
I love my car. I take my fat husky with me every day, and he can just manage to hop in at loading level. In comfort mode, the ride is pretty smooth, and he has the rear A/C vents to keep him cool. Then after I drop him off, I can put it in sport mode and the handling is amazing. Unfortunately, I'm only halfway through the break-in period. I wish they would put in a break-in rev limiter because I've already gone over a few times.

Contrary to what you might think from reading some magazines, everyone seems to like it, and I've even gotten waves from 911 owners.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
great...I've gotten looks from 911 owners too.

I set my computer to warn me not to go over 65 mph, which was the recommendation of the mechanic. You can set the warning tones and speed at which they sound. No warning if over revving, though. I just went easy on the throttle, but like you, I easily went over 3500 rpm....(big smile on my face) a few times.

Like mudman, I am going to put a cloth filter , but once the 15,000 mile is reached. I think it would allow the engine to breath better...You may want to think about it, since these filters last forever.
  • harryrogers1harryrogers1 Member Posts: 40
I dont have a dimmer control for the instrument panel. It's done automatically. On the PMS there's a control in setup for adjusting the brightness and colour (color) only. Changing thses does nothing. Back to Porsche. The only trouble with taking it back is they give me a Boxter S as a courtesy car. (I dont like it). Also as the service guys are in-experienced in the Cayenne everything seems to take so long. Oh the joys of being a guinea pig.

    happy cayenning

my infiniti navigation has a day nad night mode with the night mode being significantly darker. Is this the same with the cayenne and you are in night mode by mistake?
  • joanmkjoanmk Member Posts: 9
Thank you both. I am going to my dealer and get the system next week. I guess I'll have to play with it and decide which position 'compliments' my wonderful vehicle. By the way, I get people asking about the Cayenne all the time - they all react very positive. They all think it is good looking. There are so few around right now it makes the car even more special.
  • harryrogers1harryrogers1 Member Posts: 40
I have day, night, and automatic modes. It's dark on all of them. I'm convinced there's a gremlin inside turning off the lights. I'll let the porsche experts sort it out next week. Do you guys over there have to wait a week for an appointment to see your Porsche doctor???

I'm getting adjusted to it now, but my main problem was
taking a left turn from a stop. The tranny seems to want to hold the gear longer when you are cornering so it didn't shift when I expected it to (~3800). Then I tried to hit the upshift button, but, since the wheel was turned, I hit the scan button instead. You set the warning for 65? You must have some self control :-).
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
yeah, It seems this accidentally hitting the scan or mute button is a common occurrence. Yes, it was hard to keep within the prescribed rpm & speed, but now at 4740 miles, I noticed a slight improvement of fuel economy and better pickup. Instead of 12.9 avg city/highway, I'm getting 13.5, with the exact same driving pattern.

check out the forum of FX45 vs Cay vs Toureg vs X5 .
  • i_drivei_drive Member Posts: 35
i was considering a Cayenne S before i went to the official Porsche USA website, and i just discovered that they now have a Cayene V6?

to my amazement, it is only $40,000. in that case, i ought to get the Cayenne instead of the Cayenne S.

does anyone know any information about the Cayenne? i am puzzled because you cannot "build your porsche" on the website; they only have the S and Turbo.

    any feedback would be appreciated.
    thanks!
  • jrkimjrkim Member Posts: 10
    Hi Jason,
I see you live in Rancho Santa Fe. In that case, you should go ahead and get the turbo.

I heard the V6 won't be available until sometime in 2004 but do you really want a Porsche that's slower than a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna?
  • i_drivei_drive Member Posts: 35
i want a Cayenne Turbo, but my wife thinks i love cars more than her (i don't). she refuses to get another pricey car. the only car she'll consider is the Cayenne or Cayenne S. She also fancies the new 7 series, but will only get it if we get a good deal. ( didn't tell her how much my SL cost; told her high 90's; she believed me) she has absolutely no interest in cars.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
hi....I think that the Cay S has enough power to do 99% of what everyone will ask of it. It is quick and can do the most with the least compromise.....period. regular cay will also do a lot, but might be a little slower, but hey,, when do we drag race anyway ???? Its all about silly bragging rights, which mean didly squat in the real world. Come up to the dealers here, and you will get a great deal due to the dotcom crash on silicon valley. I priced it out in LA area and prices were about $16,000 more for the turbo, and $10,000 less for the cay S.

You must have alot of fun in the MB SL. The Cay can do a lot more. Iwould evaluate my goals before purchasing, but think it is a great car...............!
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
veering off topic for a moment. I generally consider car & driver is a good mag. Well, during its report on the Porsche Cayenne earlier this year, the 2 guys driving the Cay (with onroad tires) drove it offroad in the mud without the slightest clue what they were doing.. Driving an offroad vehicle in mud is like giving Pete Sampras a ping pong paddle and complaining he plays lousy tennis. Hellooooo !! Then these 2 geniuses said " we had to use an ordinary pickup to pull it out" as if the beatup pickup is better than the Cayenne. Hellooooooo, when a vehicle is stuck in mud, you could use a winch or any vehicle to move the car a little to escape the self dug hole.
They tried to undercut a vehicle using underhanded ,dirty , unfair tactics that are unbecoming of a fair magazine. I was aghast at this unprofessional prank that they pulled with glee....I already wrote them to castigate this boorish behaviour (on par with childhood pranks).....I don't know if it is jealousy, repressed trauma, immaturity or what, but if you have something to say , then say it....don't stage something to fail and then report as if it is the genuine ......duhhhhhhhh !!
  • mudman2mudman2 Member Posts: 152
The trip was great, I decided to order a V1 since I do not have the heart to set the speed alarms.

The main reason for this was an officer waving at me as he went by, instead of the normal side to side wave it was more of a downward motion. I found a new use for tiptronic, slowing down without showing brakelights.

On the way back I tested the versatility of the pepper.

Instead of only my daughter I carried her friend who lives in our area and just before we left another friend, this time a 6 ft guy arrived (she forgot to ask me first !)

So I pulled up the load screen and filled to the roof and squeezed everything else in between the 2 rear seat passengers.

Still managed to fly, but I did feel the weight.

Her friends said they loved the car and especially the surround sound system.
  • mudman2mudman2 Member Posts: 152
Mostly I get into the shop the following day or the same day.

It does sound like a real problem you've got there, good luck.

By the way I suppose owners here all know of www.renntech.org, usefull place for questions.
  • i_drivei_drive Member Posts: 35
did you say $10,000 off Cayenne S in LA?
are you serious? i must go there and see.
in SD, they are only offering $5,000 off a cay s.
  • harryrogers1harryrogers1 Member Posts: 40
Could do with that over here. Must do a bit of googling maybe there is one here (or similar).

Keep finding new things on the Turbo. Porsche really ought to supply you with a 12 year old that understands all these gizmos.
