Make sure the montly payments add up to
    20,843 + taxes + 1.9% APR and not
    20,843 + taxes + 1.9% APR + $3000 'hidden dealer fee'.

man sounds like a good deal

I am actually in the market for buying an EX/LX 2004 automatic . I am in chicagoland area. The best I got was the invoice price (incoice + destination of $490). Any one know of a better deal?
    thanks

im in south jersey. the dealership told me over the phone they are selling all honda cars at invoice for december. im looking to get the EX Coupe V6 automatic, no NAV. invoice is 24,433. the dealership quoted me this invoice price upfront which i guess isnt a bad deal? but i assume if they are already offering the invoice price, i could get them lower. does this sound like a good deal and what kind of offer sounds reasonable for me to make? my first time buying a car so im trying to make sure im getting the best deal i can. thanks for any tips.

Took the car home Sunday, paid 20,843 + taxes + doc + tire fee. No other costs. Got a prior quote on an EX with side curtain air bags of 20,843. However, when we arrived at dealership, asked for the EX-L, gave us the car at the earlier quote. What are the chances that the dealer screwed up!

I don't think any dealer could be that dumb but who knows?

Now, I'll probably have a customer offer that amount or less. They will tell me how they read on the internet that someone paid that amount.

Sorry, but it makes no sense.

Was there a trade in that they really wanted badly or paid less than it was worth?

Let's just say my manager would whip out our checkbook and buy as many of those as he could for that!

I think everyone has had a job where big screwups happen that cost many times what this dealer may have lost on this car. I've had F&I guys sit there and make the same addition, subtraction, money factor, residual mistake ten times in a row, before I took pity on them and pointed out why their numbers weren't adding up right. Who knows how long these people keep their jobs, but I'm sure there are instances of deals like this happening every day. Congratulations!! Maybe there is something else to it, and maybe not, and Craig.. you have my condolences trying to explain this to your Edmunds customers. Do you ever get anyone that reads these postings?

No trade, no pin stripes, no dingle balls, no extended war, and did not give dealer first born child. Hey, after 100 hours of preparation, I was ready to do battle, but dealer did not ask me to make an offer. I keep thinking, there's gotta be something I'm missing, but after 3 days of persistent contemplation, I believe I got the "DEAL of a LIFETIME."
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Oh...I'm sure I'll hear about this. Some people will become VERY frustrated trying to match or even beat this alleged deal.

Then I'm the bad guy when I tell them it won't work.

    The internet can be amazing!

    Hi
well as mentioned in another post by me earlier, I am in the market for 2004 EX auto (no navi no leather) .
The question I have is I have heard that dealers give out better deals at the end of the months or even better at the end of a quarters. I guess the logical reasoning would be to meet their numbers for the month or quarter. Is this for real? any comments?
    thanks
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
It's more dependant on the supply situation.

Sometimes a dealer will take a dumb deal at the end of the month just to hit a number or something but usually that same deal could have been had the first week too.

Fairly good supplies now on that EX Accord.

Gary: Is it really a 2004 or 2003? How many miles does your car have when you pick it up? Just curious...
  • gary3308gary3308 Member Posts: 6
It was a 2004, 11 miles on the odometer, and still wrapped in plastic!
  • ladhnurladhnur Member Posts: 20
which dealership did u go to gary?
  • billyperksbillyperks Member Posts: 449
you took delivery with the plastic on the seats?

I am not trying to be hard on you but I just find it hard to beleive you got the car for that price.

I am an accountant and I think I am pretty much numbers oriented-in all my life of car buying I have never seen a dealer took that much of their invoice price- is this guy in business to loose money?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I'm glad I'm not the only one to cry foul on this one!
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,264
Don't call this gentleman a liar... He gave you every detail of his deal. Car dealers and other business people make bad deals every day. Maybe it was the sales manager's last week, and he was trying to screw his boss.. Who knows why he got that deal?

Like he said, maybe its the 'deal of a lifetime'.

And like ISELL says.... 'don't try this at home' (or his store)

But, please don't cast doubt on his word. His message and numbers have been nothing but consistent in all of his posts.

Don't get me wrong- I don't care if he pays a penny for the car, all I am saying is, dealers hardly make such a huge mistake. Secondly, if this dealer is selling the car for that low-how does he cover his overheads?

Is he in business to make a loss?

Maybe I will shop there fo my next car.
  • camspeedy2002camspeedy2002 Member Posts: 1
That seems like it was a great deal, Let me ask you a question, did the dealership make an error or are you the best negotiator in the world. Sometimes in life you have to think about others, I don't mind working hard to make a good deal, but in a situation like this you have to remember that the saleman is getting screwed either way. I don't mind paying a little profit, good customer service nowadays goes a long way. Your post seems nothing more than an attempt to be the cool guy this week. Take your dealership error deal and tell your neighbors because we dont care.
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
so camspeedy2002, are you saying if you got the same offer he got, you would offer to pay more so the dealer wouldnt get screwed? or you would go over the numbers to see if he made a mistake so you didnt take advantage of him?

maybe im a bad person but if i was able to screw the dealer and save some money i think i could still sleep at night. and if gary got this great deal then good for him, this forum is for buying experiences and he should be posting it here.

well im looking at a 04 accord coupe EX V6 tonight, dealer gave me a price off the bat over the phone at invoice without any negotiating, selling all honda CARS at invoice this month,it is $24333. think i can still negotiate lower since he gave the invoice right upfront? well if i screw him i will be posting it on here and telling my neighbors.

When I purchased my 04 LX automatic sedan two weeks ago my price was 18,282 including desintation charges.

I was just cleaning out my email and I clicked on the link to the dealer's page that shows their current LX price. It is 17899. Invoice is 18093 (according to Edmunds). That is almost a $400 savings I could have had if I had waited two weeks.

I am not complaining, but it seems odd that they dropped the price that much. Maybe they are thinking December will be a slow month.

Maybe it has something to do with financing? Did Honda extend the financing special they had last month?

With all due respect, why do you want ot go in with such a negative attitude? I just got a 2004 V6 w/NAV for about $600 over invoice. Could I have shaved a few hundred off that by "getin nasty" with the salesperson? Maybe, but I've got to work with that salesperson and the service department of that dealership for the next 4-6 years, and I personally would prefer to leave the dealership with a positive impression of me. My salesperson almost forgot to collect my $15,000 down payment check until I reminded him as I was driving out of the delivery area -- I could have run off giggling and waiting for them to catch up with me, but why be such a jerk?

Frankly, if you go in with that attitude, you're going to get it right back in your face, and I guarantee they are better at it than most of us.

Isn't buying a new car suppossed to be fun? :>)
  • deal4deal4 Member Posts: 1
what would you guys do if the whole car industry went to only selling there cars at MSRP. Then the only thing left to talk about would be buying experience please give me you thought on this
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
i dont think i have a negative attitude. maybe u can consider it that but i feel if you can a steal of a deal then go for it. im not going to walk away and not give him a 15,000 dollar down payment, but if i can get it for a good deal then im all for it. maybe its a stereotype but im sure there are many dealers that would screw you in a second if they can. of course i realize thats not all dealers. i guess i dont really plan on watching out for th dealer and i dont plan on him watching out for me.
And im going to look tonight but i dont plan on getting a nasty attitude, i was just wondering if it was reasonable to try to negotiate a lower price if they are already offering the car at invoice with no negotiation. ok thats it for now, see ya!
  • gary3308gary3308 Member Posts: 6
I am as shocked as everyone on the price I paid. I did my homework and expected a battle. I never made an offer on the car. Salesman sez, here is what the car will cost, with taxes, $45 doc and $5 tire. In fact, I was ready to make an offer of 22K. I believe there was some confusion over the EX-L, and the EX with side curtain air bags that I had requested info on. Just in the right place at the right time!
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
Sounds like youve done good, assuming the options are of value to you. My dealer wanted $49 for the net plus another $95 to install it. I may try doing it myself but I dont like the idea of drilling holes through the metal in my car.
Dont know how risk averse you are, but I also purchased a Honda Care warranty 7yr/100k $0 deductible for $945. Dealer's starting price was $1375, and I bet there's still a lot of margin there. Good luck -- dont forget to get a color that your significant other likes.
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
That's an interesting question, but I think unrealistic becuase that's just not the nature of the automobile market which has become more "efficient," I would argue, because of sites like Edmunds.
However, if they did, then the best deal would be with the dealer that offered the most extras. There would still be price discussions comparing models/options, and across dealers. What I'd really like to see is some genuine price/quality competition in the area of dealer service.
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
my dealer said they already have the wheel locks, mud flaps, cargo net, and window etching with all the vehicles, it wasnt something i asked to add on. does this sound like they are just trying to get the price a little higher? is window etching standard or an option? i wanted the spoiler-- but mud flaps, wheel locks and the cargo net thing i dont mind having but i could really care less.
  • rbrrbr Member Posts: 113
I think its an option -- I dont have it on mine. Cargo net will probably get more use than you might think it will. I used the one on my Saab 9-5 all the time.

You could always ask for one without the options, or only the options you want. That should theoretically reduce the price.
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
FYI: You can buy the cargo net online for about $30.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
Installation on the cargo net requires drilling in the trunk area though. That's why I had mine done at the dealer for a total cost of $97.

I'm currently in the market for an auto '04 LX accord with side air bags. I'm from Columbus, OH so I'm relatively close to the Honda plant. (not that this really matters) I've been offered 19,500 for the LX. I would really like to get this car for 19,000 or less. Is this an unreasonable request to ask of dealers or should I be "sticking it to them" so to speak and fight hard for this sub-19 price. I do want to be fair to the dealer if it's possible. I know they have familie to feed also.
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
I paid 18,282 for my LX automatic sedan without side airbags. I don't think those airbags cost $1,300, so yes you should be able to get a much lower price.

Be sure to check out carsdirect.com. They will give you a quote for a new Accord online. I just did it for your LX with auto and airbags and it was $18,857 for my zipcode.
  • graphite22graphite22 Member Posts: 6
I just bought a 2004 Ex-L (as you all should know it has the curtain airbags and xm radio) for 22,000 plus taxes and i'm in chicago!...now THAT is one heck of a deal....I don't know about the guy who supposedly got it for under 22k which you guys have been discussing for the past 30 messages!.....I believe I got a heck of a deal...take home the same day , whole deal took about 1hr to 1hr 1/2 to do .....car was in plastic and all when I first test drove it with 6 miles on it! My wife and I did some simple research on the net with few sources like cars.direct, edmunds and autobytel which only took a couple hrs MAX to do!

  • graphite22graphite22 Member Posts: 6
i'm not attacking anyone and i'm only saying that if your comments are aimed at me. thank you. I'm just simply stating the great deal that I got.
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
i think 22 is a good deal, gary obviously got a unbelivable deal somehow, but good for him. im looking at the EX V6 coupe and got a price of 25k last night plus taxes (i know i posted it before but it got removed). includes spoiler, mud gaurds, wheel locks, window etching, and cargo net. sounds like a pretty good deal to me but i wanted to check out one more dealership tonight. the spoiler is the only option i requested. do dealers typically already have the mud flaps, wheel locks, window etching and cargo net installed. he said they do on all of them of that model and of course this brings the price up a few hundred dollars at the least.
  • kcercekcerce Member Posts: 6
brianl0202 each dealer is different when it comes to add-ons. Some put add-ons onto every car they can because it adds profit to the car. Others will sell you a car with no add-ons if you insist on it. I am too looking for a car in the South Jersey area (Burlington County) and have spoke to three different dealers. One dealer had add-ons but told me they could get me a car without them. The other two claim they do not have add-ons. Just remember that the add-ons are typically marked up 100% or more, so there is plenty of room to negotiate. I am looking for a 4 cyl, 4dr, EX-L and dealer in NE Philly gave me a price $100 under invoice. Is this the same dealer that you got your best price from? If not, where is your best deal located?
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
i am also in burlington county. i have been to the dealer in marlton and in turnersville, havent checked out the NE philly one. marlton is where i got the price of 25 with the already included add ons plus the spoiler that i want added on. im going to turnersville tonight where i was already told over the phone without negotiating that they are selling all honda cars for invoice this month (spoke to internet dept), invoice for car i want is 24,333. that would not include the spoiler, and of course the other add ons would be more but im not sure if they already include some like marlton. im thinking i could get a better deal tonight but i guess i'll find out. sounds like NE philly could be worth checking out too.
  • kcercekcerce Member Posts: 6
I have been to Turnersville and a couple of my friends have bought Hondas there. Both have had good experiences with no preinstalled add-ons. In general a no hassle no pain buying experience. I think I will give them a call to see if they can beat Sloane Hondas price. Have you heard of any financing deals through Honda this month? Good luck with your buying experience and let me know what they charge you for the spoiler. I too am looking for a rear spoiler as well as the gold emblem package. I hope we both can get good deals!

Continental Honda in Countryside will give you a good deal just make sure you stick to your offer, I did, and it worked out!....I also hear that Honda of Lisle is excellent by the way. Hope it helps you out!
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
im not sure about financing. all i know is that for 5yrs for the car i want is 3.9%. i would think it would be the same for you if you finance 5 yrs, 3yrs or 1 yr would be a lower rate im pretty sure. this is based on having good credit. the price you got at sloane for 100 under invoice, was that before any add-ons, just curious. good luck
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
graphite22 - reread my post. I was talking about messages that I removed and said "last evening". There was nothing at all wrong with your message. I'm sorry about the positioning of my post, yours just happened to be the last message posted as I got caught up.

Sorry for the interruption, folks - carry on!

    :-)
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
Rosen in Gurnee IL is currently offering LX sedans for under invoice. They probably have a similar deal for EX models.

Goto their website, find the car you want, and request a quote.
  • kcercekcerce Member Posts: 6
The sloane honda price is before add-ons. They quoted $525 installed for the rear spoiler and $100 for the gold package. They also quoted $177 for tags and $50 for processing fee. I have seen the spoiler cheaper at other dealers, like $500. I am going to try and work the price down some more. What is Turnersville charging for these items? Are you financing thru Honda or thru a private institution? The best I have been able to find is 4.25% at Capital one auto finance.
  • brianl0202brianl0202 Member Posts: 26
the fincancing i got for 3.9% is through honda. the quote i got for the spoiler in marlton was about 548 or something around there. i'll let you know if i have better luck in turnersville tonight.

Can anyone tell me who is the manufacturer of the factory installed audio system (receiver and speakers), as well as the XM radio? Is the XM radio the same as in the 2004 Acura TL?

    Thanks!
  • mike1456mike1456 Member Posts: 21
After much research, I got the 2004 4 cyl EX-L automatic including spoiler, cargo tray and liner for $23,700 OTD (includes 6 percent tax and TTL). I could have squeezed them for more but didn't, felt it was a fair offer. Two other dealers (in Florida) said they couldn't or wouldn't do better, so I took the deal. Most important, I love the car, it was tough passing up the V6 but I have no regrets. Thanks for sharing all your experiences on this board because it helped me to narrow down what a fair deal is. I would have taken from 24k OTD to 24,500 OTD. The dealer probably threw in the spoiler to make the deal.
  • mike1456mike1456 Member Posts: 21
I learned a lot about car dealers. At one place,in Florida, they used strong arm tactics, just like the old days, trying to convince me to change colors, year, or type of car to help move their inventory, but not help me get what I wanted. At another place, the 2004 Accord Coupe had body damage and smoke coming out of the tailpipe ("just sulfer," the salesman said.) But at the good car dealers, there is no pressure, a fair deal, and the feeling they're trying to help you, not screw you. It's worth your while to shop prices, just for the education. As for me, I wouldn't accept any deal unless I saw the car I wanted on the lot and got to drive it first. "We can get it from another dealer," is what a few said. Guess what? I can drive to another dealer myself!! Thanks again everyone for sharing your car buying experiences.
