You may find this hard to believe but a lot of people with a lot of money see no benefit in driving expensive show off type cars.

To these people, it's "just a car" and nothing else. I had a very well off uncle like that. He bought new Chevys...usually the "middle" model. He would drive them for many years and then buy another. In his later years, I think he upgraded himself to a Chrysler.
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
The research-based book "The Millionaire Next Door" says, among other things, that the "real American millionaire" is virtually invisible to the public since he/she drives the Chevy/Ford/Chrysler and has a middle or upper-middle class home.

While there are truly affluent individuals who also drive the Benzes, BMWs and Lexus, the author clusters the rich majority as the low-profile, understated crowd.

It's all about life philosophies, isn't it ?

I got a quote for Accord EXV6 NAVI Sedan Automatic for $25946.94 OTD.

Any Suggestions / Comments on the price quote?

    Thanks

The best way to avoid the dealer hassles is to shop over the internet. My recent dealer experience was less than stellar. Outright lies and deception. Just for fun, I requested price quotes from a few dealers via the internet. I obtained the same, and sometimes lower price for the exact same car I purchased at the dealer. All without the 'runaround' drama that is often both pathetic and hilarious at the same time. I understand there might be some nice & 'honest' salespeople out there but I have yet to find one. Do yourselves a favor, don't listen to those self professed Honda gurus, you can and will get a better deal when you bypass those salespeople.

Just purchased two Hondas in D/FW, 2004 Accord EX-L and CR-V EX... in both cases the 'finance officer' had extra charges in the paperwork that weren't part of the deal.

Frank Kent Honda wanted $299 for vehicle VIN etching on the Accord. He explained it was already done to all their cars.

Vandergriff Honda's superslick financial officer explained that 'by state law' he was required to explain some charges. I thought it was required fees and taxes. Turned out to be credit life, extended tire warranty, vehicle etching (again), etc., all listed without prices. Come to find out it was over $4200 tacked on to the $21,000 CR-V(!).

Fortunately I came with eyes wide open, and left with both vehicles at the original agreed to price (thanks to the Carbuyingtips site). But in both cases I left feeling the dealerships had been less than completely forthcoming.

I've enjoyed reading your recent posts and noticed that you mentioned Cincinnati. I am seriously considering buying an Accord (LX V6 Sedan) and am also in the Cincinnati area. Would you share more about what you purchased, where, price, satisfaction, etc.? Thanks!

Have never financed one-always a cash buyer but from what I have seen the dealer is the last place you want to get your financing from. Go to a credit union, bank or about any place else.

One of the networks did a expose on the dealer finance scams-and all of them had extra charges for all manner of things-this one large chain-one of their locations is a honda dealer in Dallas I believe even has a report they put together on every sale identifying how much they skinned out of the buyer in the "financing" process. The network "buyer" wore a hidden camera-oh how I did love those snakes. Those guys were real live crooks and have cheated people out of millions of dollars.

Be careful out there-particularly of that finance guy-you should never ever see or use that guy.

I sell for a living and one of my competitors sells a knock off product of mine that is poorly made and I dearly love to show people who are buying his product how to get a 40% reduction in the price for the knock off product. Not all sales reps are crooks but some are-be careful out there.

I am not sure if we are allowed to post this kind of information here, but here it is: in 1998 after a disastruous experience with a Ford Taurus, I decided I wanted the cheapest Civic. I went ahead and bought a Civic CX hatchback from Superior Honda. Paid 13k with the following options: auto, AC, alarm/radio (alarm + radio come as a single unit). Shopping experience was very good. In 2000 my brother-in-law wanted a small car, went with him to Honda East, and they quoted him a price above MSRP. We left, and he ended up buying a Mazda Protege. I am now living in the East Side of the city, and Superior Honda is the closest to me. I have my Civic serviced over there, and their service is good.

ystress. I'm glad you had a good experience but be aware that your "Internet Manager" is/was a (gasp) salesperson.

    You weren't really "bypassing" anyone.

    bburton...

"The dealer is the last place you would want to get financing from"

    Really?

Let's see...this is an Accord forum, right?

Right now, Honda is offering 1.9 % financing on Accords for 36 months. For 48 months, it's 2.9 and for 60 months, it's 3.9.

Do you really think the banks and credit unions you've suggested can match or beat these current rates?

I have an offer from a dealer for a 2004 Honda Acord EX with Leather 4 cylinder for 22,150 (206 below invoice) or with Navigation system 24,000 (154 below invoice). Should I make the deal? Comparing this with a 2003 Mazda 6 loaded. Thanks.
  • bburton3bburton3 Member Posts: 185
If you get one of those dealers who play all kinds of games with financing-like $399 for etching. One dealer on the expose charged $1K for etching. IF there are no "extras" in the dealer financing package that may make sense for those who finance cars.

BTW-what does your dealership charge for etching. Also how does etching glass improve your odds against getting your vehicle stolen-2 minutes and a hammer and the glass is gone.

Oh yes, I got that 1.9% financing on my Accord. I've usually found that the dealership has the *best* financing deal. I was at my bank cashing out a CD for the downpayment and they asked me what I was going to do with the money. I said it was for a car loan and the bank officer immediately started a hard sell on a loan at a higher rate than the Honda financing. Remember that banks are for-profit business that are trying to sell their products.

The F&I person offered up the low Honda rates right away. Yes, she did try to sell me an insurance policy and a funky 3rd party extended warranty, but after a polite but firm no, she wrote up exactly what I wanted.

Get your best price from the dealer and then compare his finance deal with the one you have previously researched at your credit union. Only then will you know which is more to your advantage.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,269
I've shopped them all.. I've owned six Hondas.. You can usually get the lowest price from Performance in Fairfield, and the best overall buying experience and service (if thats important to you) from Century in Montgomery. I've had no problems with Superior or Honda East, but I would avoid either Wyler dealership.

To answer your question, we do not offer glass etching.

Last week I had a customer so loyal to her credit union that she refused my 2.9 financing for 48 months and opted instead to use her credit union who charged her two points higher.

I think she thought there were strings attached or something?
  • bburton3bburton3 Member Posts: 185
Just curious-is this supposed to make a vehicle less attractive to thieves? How does glass etching add anything beyond the vin # displayed at the bottom of the windshield?

Always been curious about the supposed purpose of this added benefit.

I bought a certified used Honda and was blinded by the "inspection process".....

I later found out the the car has at least $1000 worth of body damage that still needs fixing. The certified inspector didn't pick up on it...and the dealer says sorry, it is your car now :(

Its a great car (2003 EX V6), but don't trust that the dealers have done what they are supposed to when inspecting these cars. Buyer beware!

We just got Bellevue Honda to agree to sell us the 2004 EX V6 Sedan (no nav) for $24,850, but we walked away when they wouldn't go lower than .0029 money factor on the 36 month lease. They told us they couldn't go any lower on the money factor. Any other experiences with this? I'm surprised at this number - equal to 6.9% APR - given that American Honda is offering finance rates as low at 1.9% right now. Suggestions?
  • ianshawianshaw Member Posts: 119
Remember - The squeaky wheel gets the grease!!!

If you like the car and the repairs aren't a big deal, you may want to just suck it up and live with the dealer's oversight. However, if not, you have every reason to raise hell! I am an attorney in Wyoming - so I can't help you. But, in my experience, you would have recourse against the dealership if you are willing to pursue it. You could also pursue the issue with Honda. Honda has standards for "Certified" used cars and your car should not have been certified. My guess is that Honda would be interested to know that it has a dealership that is certifying vehicles without a proper inspection.

Hello everyone. I'm nearing the purchase of a 2004 Accord EX-L (most likely this Saturday), and would like to know if the quotes I've received are fair. For the Satin Silver Metallic Accord, I was quoted $22,300 which includes wheel locks, mud guards, cargo tray, and all-weather mats.

I'm going to trade-in a black 2002 Ford Escape XLT 4x2. It's fully loaded, minus the 4x4 and moon roof. It has 42k miles, and is in excellent condition.

Are these quotes fair. BTW, I'm in the Northern KY/Cincinnati area. These quotes are from Honda of Frankfort, in Frankfort, KY. Thanks.
  • barryssbarryss Member Posts: 41
If that's your out the door price plus tax and tags, exclusive of your trade, it's a great price. You're paying slightly below invoice and getting some nice goodies thrown in. I'd be very happy with that deal.

I just leased an EX-L sedan and the official money factor from Honda (on their stationary) was .0015. It is a promotional rate good through 01/05/04. Make sure they give it to you, or shop around. I actually saved $65 per month on my lease payment by shopping around.
  • robalakamrobalakam Member Posts: 7
The 22,300 is a good price. I got a 2004 EX-L with the protective package and the EX sports package (Rear spoiler, fog lamps, day/night mirror) along with an extra set of keys, door guards, and tires for life(if you service your car at the dealer) for 23,585 Maybe could have done a little better but my wife said I had to but today and this deal was the best. Pick up is Friday.

This is the price quote I got yesterday - I am trying to get them to drop down to $24,000 (drive out) & throw in a spoiler - they say "maybe" could go aftermarket (non-Honda spoiler) - at $24,079, but claim the Honda spoiler can not be included - without additional cost.

Is the Honda brand spoiler worth an extra $300?
I figure even if the aftermarket spoiler only lasts a few years - I could always buy a replacement and still come out ahead.

    $21956.00 Sale Price
      $490.00 Destination
     $1402.88 State Tax
       $55.53 Inv. Tax
      $175.55 Doc, Reg, Title, Inspection.
    $24079.06 Total Price.

Also could the posts be a little more clear - When you say $22,300 (or what ever) is that for the 2.3 or V6 - auto or manual - TT&L included?

Purchased a 2004 Honda Accord EX Leather with Automatic last week for $22,300. This is the 4-Cylinder SULEV version that invoices for an additional $150.

The $22,300 price includes destination charges, but does not include 6% sales tax and $149 for title, registration, and documentation. I financed with Honda at 1.9%, There were no other charges and I did not add options. Later I may purchase the automatic day/night mirror.

The vehicle was just built two weeks ago and I took delivery the day after it arrived at my dealership. The color is Desert Mist, which I like very much.

Hope this helps other Accord shoppers. Reports from others in this forum helped me to negotiate a very good price.

I acquired a 1995 Honda Accord LX sedan (4cyl automatic) from my mothers estate one year ago. It had 37500 miles on it and is in good/clean condition. I neglected to print a copy of the pricing as of Dec. 2002 and now need to determine that price to be fair. I need to repay my two siblings for their share of the vehicle but the value, obviously, is less today than it was then. I just can't remember what it was. I'm wondering if adding a $1000 to today's value is too much or too little. Today it is around $5500 to $5800 for private party. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

I just plugged your car into Edmunds' calculator based on 37,000 miles today and in clean condition it's $6,400 private sale. Two years earlier I think a more realistic price is between 8 & $9,000. Remember the car could have been sold then at closer to retail not wholesale. You didn't trade the car in. Edmunds' by-owner prices are very conservative and low. With only 37,000 miles on a 95 Accord, the car would command top dollar, so you need to use figures from the best condition, unless the car was wrecked. You can also go to the library or bank and find it in the old 2002 Blue books.

Go to cars.com to check the black book value for
    the car.
It looks like your estimate & $1000 proposal are reasonable.

Purchased a 2004 Honda Accord LX from Hillside Honda (Queens, NY) on the 30th of December.
    MSRP is $20,100; Invoice is $18,093; I paid $16,810.
  • bd21bd21 Member Posts: 437
Can't tell if that's a good deal or not? You need to spell out the deal, 2 door, 4 door, automatic transmission, other options, etc? Did the price include destination charge ($490), dealer processing fees, registration, state tax, etc.? Did you trade something in?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Those MSRP and invoice numbers don't match up to any current model.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
Why not just compare the drop between a 94 Accord and a 95 Accord and add that to the price.

For instance: Currently, if your 95 Accord is worth $5500 and a 94 Accord with the same mileage/option/condition is worth $4500 then it appears the car depreciated $1000 in a year so add $1000 to the current value. If the 95 is only worth $250 more then add $250 to the current value.

When is the best time of the year to buy a Honda? Are the incentives being offered now the only ones I'll see in the next six months? Or do I need a crystal ball (i.e., there is no set pattern to factory incentives)?

Hello. Found a left over 2003 Accord EX V6 w/ leather (no NAVI). Sticker is $26,360 (w/ destination), invoice $23,765. I know there is a $750 cash back. Dealer wants $22,738, MINUS $750, final price $21,988 plus tax, title, doc fee. How does this sound? Hoping to get it for $21,700, and have them throw in fog lights! Any help will be much appreciated. THANKS in advance!
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
If you try the Edmunds used car appraiser, you'll find that the same car with 100 miles on the odo is at $22.9k, dealer retail and $20.6k private party.

While your dealer is already offering a fair price, a GREAT deal would be somewhere between dealer retail and private party, inclusive of tax, tag and license.

My target price would therefore be $22k out the door. Dealer will say "it's a new car" but really, you've already lost one year in potential resale value.
  • kendridkendrid Member Posts: 97
It sounds like the dealer's price is right around what they would have paid for it (invoice - holdback). IMO, they are already offering you a GREAT price based on what others on this board are paying. They must be trying to get rid of it since most people want 04s.

22 out the door is rediculous. That would put the selling price around 20,500 (at least for my taxes/fees). I doubt the dealer wants to get rid of the car and loose ~$1500.

As far as the car being a 'year old', that is why Honda gave the dealer $750 - to reduce the price of the car to get rid of it. Using used car pricing to determine the price on a new car purchase is a new one.

Let us know what you end up getting. If they are offering 21988 to everyone it might not last long.
  • higgins7higgins7 Member Posts: 24
21988 is offered to ANYONE. Base on 6.5% tax, selling price have to be around 20600. It NEVER hurts to ask but I have serious doubts, I can haggle down to $20,600! But, thanks for ALL and any INPUT. Keep them coming, I plan on going back Monday! THANKS again!

yes, Honda charged $550 for bank fee. But they provide gap insurance with their lease. So it is not too bad.

Just bought last week in NY for 19,837 before tax. That includes destination. Drove it off that night. They were super busy as it was the friday after x-mas and in Queens NYC. Everywhere I look it shows I got a very good deal. Especially edmunds. They said they sold over 22 cars that day when we were there, and i guess alot of ppl paid over and we were some of the lucky few they sold to just to make sales #'s. While waiting, young couple next to us also waiting for car said they took first offer and no dest. Took us 4 hours and at 1 point we had our coats on ready to leave. They wouldnt let us...It was when they dropped 870bux and cut destination i put my hand out for a deal. After reading edmunds i see we got a great deal, about 250 below invoice and holdback. reading edmunds tios on where to haggle from really helped. Plus the fact that they were selling cars left and right that day helped. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    Hey, guys.
Today I purchased '04 Accord EX-L w/ protection package ($190 value) (wheel locks, cargo tray, splash guard) for $21,900 ($490 destination charge included) from Castle Honda in Morton Grove.
    invoice : $21,867 + $490 = $22,357
    retail : $24,300 + $490 = $24,790
I couldn't get 3.9% financing due to low credit score.
    I think i'll be getting 5.9%.
Let me know what you guys think about the price.
  • higgins7higgins7 Member Posts: 24
That seems to be good deal. I am also considering an 04 EX-L, best I have (so far) is 22,175 from Jacobs Twin (Chicago). I also test drove a Red 04 EX-L at Castle Honda last Sat. Congratulations, enjoy!
