i decided i didn't want ABS but i wanted everything else. so here's what i got:
04 Elantra Crimson GLS
Automatic
Sunroof
everything else except ABS
out the door price after rebates and before taxes and title: $12,000
TMV price after $2500 rebate was $12,496
i went with it and so far so happy
but nevertheless, I think it's still a good deal. I called all the Hyundai dealers in Columbus, OH and they all gave me their best price of $13034 (package 6) before taxes and title, after rebate. Then Dennis Autopoint gave me a quote of $12,534 for the car. I went there, and liked the Elantra w/o ABS, and asked if they would give it to me for $12,000. They said yes. So that's how it worked out.
Actually, the car ended up having 1200 miles on it, so they knocked the price by $500.
And they charged me $495 for the GAP insurance, but I then declined it. The dealer later told me that GAP should only cost around $180 and that the financing officer, was making $220 commission off it.
Of course, the $2K rebate helped, but so did Edmund's research, shopping four dealerships on price alone, and not least shopping on the last day of the month (when the salesman work hard to get their quotas).
What a great car, great warrenty, and great price. Thanks to all who have helped.
2002 GLS
21,000 miles
Auto
ABS & Traction Control
CD Player
Price paid: $8,950
Almost like new - a little wear on the floor mats & a couple of dings in the rear bumper (typical in NYC)
No problems as of yet, and I love it. I installed some bumper guards on the rear to try to prevent more dings.
Bought it at Hyundai of Manhattan - they were very good, no pressure.
I felt it was a good deal at the time, compared to other Elantras I was looking at in the area. One dealer had the same car, about the same price, but with 38,000 miles on it! Does anyone think $8,950 with 21,000 miles was a good deal?
New GT 4-door sedan; black; accessory group 7 (sunroof, no ABS); manual; Boston area
car price: 12,700.00
MA sales tax (5%): 635.00
title and registration: 86.00
documentary preparation: 165.00
TOTAL: 13,586.00
Congrats!

I worked with Van Horn Hyundai here in Wisconsin - http://www.fdlhyundai.com/ . They have been amazing from start to finish. I received a quote from a local dealership on a similar car (but black) for $14,500. When FDL Hyundai's sales guy, Scott, gave me a call, he suggested they could beat the price by $400. There wasn't any screwing around, he said it right off the bat. I asked a few questions and we were off the phone.
I thought I wanted a manual transmission and they told me they'd have whatever I want, however I want it, in stock within two to five days. That's extremely responsive, as far as I'm concerned. For various reasons, I decided to stick with an automatic.
They called me up this morning and we refreshed the details of our intial conversation. An hour later, the sales manager called me and gave me a flat $14,000 with the cargo net tossed in.
That's when they asked about financing, but I was prepared. My bank had quoted me between 5%-5.5% for 60 months. I'm 22 and have very limited credit history, though it's all good, so I've been outright denied by a number of online loan agencies. I gave them my info and they got back to me three hours later, offering me 4.89% for 60 months. Damn!
There was never any pressure to buy. There was never any rush on me. The salesmen were just straight-forward and gave me a solid deal - not at all what I was expecting. The dealership is an hour and a half drive away, but it's worth it.
Now, to find a way to get there and pick up my new car...
I think its a good deal. Could I did any better? Maybe, but I didn't want to waste much time. Everything was done over the internet. I just went there and signed the papers (no last minute surprises)
I have one question hopefully someone can help me with. I want to swap-out the radio with a Radio/CD; is this a simple enough exercise? I'm thinking of picking up something at Best Buy... are all these radio's interchangeable? Appreciate any advice ... or even recommendations. I'm looking for something cheap that will play CD-R's.
First, this isn't the best place to be talking about such things as Elantra stereos since it is a discussion specifically about what folks paid for their Elantras and how the purchase experience progressed. There are other Elantra discussions where these things should be pursued - try the Make/Model search on the left side of the page to find them. (Or email me if I can help - I'll be glad to do so.)
The other thing is that we can't use these discussions to buy and sell things - anything at all. So please don't make posts that ask for something like that to happen. Check the Membership Agreement (linked at upper left) and/or the Rules of the Road (linked at the top of the page) for the full details.
Thanks!
I finally picked up my car from the dealership yesterday. The GT Hatchbacks are a lot better looking in person than they are in the pictures - particularly the rear. But, to my experience. I arranged everything ahead of time so that, when I got to the dealership, there wasn't a whole lot to talk about. I was given a tour of the car and went on a test drive. The salesguy kept trying to tell me things about the car, but I've read so much that he had a hard time finding anything I didn't know already - we laughed about that. The test drive sealed the deal for me.
After filling out most of the paperwork, the salesguy explained to me that he only gets an insignificant commission from the sale price of the car. However, he said, Hyundai will be contacting me and having me complete a customer satisfaction survey - how happy I am with how I was treated and the car itself determines the bonus that the salesguy gets. He laid it on pretty thick that he'd really like a strong rating. At that point, I asked him to give my friend (who drove me two hours to the dealership) a free tank of gas, and he handed us a $20. That, combined with everything else, definitely is going to get him a bonus.
At the end of the day, it went incredibly smoothly. I was only at the dealership for a little more than an hour, in total, and there was never any pressure in any way. Just a very friendly, open conversation and a great deal of explaining every last feature of a feature-rich vehicle.
I really couldn't be happier with my choice (or that price!).
Picked it up yesterday! Sterling 5s hatch, no options... I forget the final exact numbers, but they had the car itself for $11,622 + $99 dealer processing (including 2k rebate). I extended the bumper-to-bumper out to 100k for $859 (backy - hope this helps). Total out-the-door was just over $12,800, financed at 3.49% through my credit union including gap protection. Fitzgerald, in Gaithersburg, MD. Google 'em for the website; they post sick-low prices online and don't play around. Salesman was my age (24), finance guy was cool, sales manager made everything easy, they're gonna get good feedback on the survey.
A side note: having a patient salesman makes all the difference. I hadn't driven a stick more than around a parking lot, and when I laid rubber and peeled out of the dealership lot (oops) he was totally cool with it. Guess I'd already made it clear that I was buying the car and the test drive was a formality.
One thing that got weird though was in the finance department. We were going to pay cash for the car, but since we used the $400 recent grad rebate, we had to finance with Hyundai Motor Finance. We were urged to not make a down-payment (even though we wanted to a make a large one) . . . maybe the loan officer gets a commission based on the size of the loan originated . . . I don't know. All I know is what we initially proposed (a large down-payment) was *NOT* well received. Not a big deal though in retrospect. We ended up financing and got a very poor rate, but since there is no prepayment penalty we'll pay it off right away . . .
In summary:
car plus destination ~$15,500
minus manufacturer's rebate of $2000
minus new grad rebate $400
plus taxes, tags, processing ~$900
OTD: $0 LOL, I can see why credit is so seductive, I don't like it. We aren't going to pay a penny on this vehicle until June.
Final cost before any interest (which will probably end up around $50 I'd guess): $13,985
The car is driving wonderfully and looks good. We love all the features. We have absolutely no regretful feelings after making the purchase . . . that's a sign to us that we made a great choice.
I am paying $11,583 out the door meaning including everything.
DO you guys think this is a good price?
I found a 2002 Elantra GT with 24K on it all options included Automatic and selling for $7,995
I am thinking to buy this cuz it has all the options in it. But then no 100K miles warranty.
What do you guys think?

The dealer looks OK. Although Fitzgerald Mall (Maryland) has no haggle price of $13000, but I think I got good value for my trade in - so basically it comes down to the same value.
My girlfriend is in the market for a new car. After much research and test driving a few cars she decided to buy an 04 GT Sedan with moonroof, ABS and TCS. She loves everything about the car. She says that it's "cute."
Anyways, my question is how much should she pay for this car? The TMV for the car is $14,440. With taxes and registartion we should be looking at about $15,500. Is this a good price or should she offer something along the lines $14,000?
She's paying cash for the car. I don't know if this will be an advantage for her. We live in jersey City, NJ and the dealer that we visted is Difeo Hyundai.
Does anyone have any experiences dealing with this dealer? Any recommendations to other dealers?
Thank you for your time and help.
I guess this was probably the proper board to ask your questions. Check out my reply on the Hyundai Elantra board, as far as dealer recommendations, etc.
I live in California, our sales tax is 8.25%, tags were $202.00 and $12,816.00 for the car totaling $14,238.00 out of the door.
Elantra GLS 5-speed, base model (Sterling color)
Floor Mats
Trunk Cargo Net
Mud Guards
$12,800 - $2000 rebate = $10,800 (+title/registration fees)
It looks like invoice was $12,922 for this car, so I think I got it for $122 BELOW invoice without even knowing I was doing so! Assuming a 2% dealer holdback of $258, they would have only profitted about $136 on me then, unless I'm missing something. I talked the Hyundai dealership into matching a price quote I had for a stripped down Kia Spectra (no power anything except that it had A/C) and they eventually did match it! It was the end of the month, and I was paying cash which may have helped somehow I think. The only slight "bummer" was that the car already had 160 miles on it, so I assume it had been test driven quite a few times (and I'm hoping the previous drivers were kind to it...)
But still a good deal, no?
