What is the price before tax, license, and doc fees? In other words, what is the price compared to invoice before deducting rebates?
  • ytbhytbh Member Posts: 11
well here's what came out of the deal,

i decided i didn't want ABS but i wanted everything else. so here's what i got:

    04 Elantra Crimson GLS
    Automatic
    Sunroof
    everything else except ABS

out the door price after rebates and before taxes and title: $12,000

TMV price after $2500 rebate was $12,496

i went with it and so far so happy
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
That is really an incredible deal! Invoice for a GLS automatic with package 5, spoiler, mats, wood grain trim, cargo net, and mud guards is $15,121. So after the $2500 rebate you got it for $621 under dealer invoice! No wonder you are happy. How hard was it to get the dealer down to that figure?
  • ytbhytbh Member Posts: 11
Well, first of all, let me clarify my car a little better. I should have said, I got Package 5, but I didn't get the spoiler, wood grain trim, mud guards, or cargo net. I did get floor mats though.

but nevertheless, I think it's still a good deal. I called all the Hyundai dealers in Columbus, OH and they all gave me their best price of $13034 (package 6) before taxes and title, after rebate. Then Dennis Autopoint gave me a quote of $12,534 for the car. I went there, and liked the Elantra w/o ABS, and asked if they would give it to me for $12,000. They said yes. So that's how it worked out.

Actually, the car ended up having 1200 miles on it, so they knocked the price by $500.
And they charged me $495 for the GAP insurance, but I then declined it. The dealer later told me that GAP should only cost around $180 and that the financing officer, was making $220 commission off it.

Hi all. Just felt like sharing that I got my new Black GT hatch (option 1 - no roof or ABS and no wood trim) today for $11,995.00, plus tag/title, taxes, and freight. Only rebate was the $2000 cash back. Never thought I'd get so many options, in such a solid, reliable, and fun vehicle, for SO little.

Of course, the $2K rebate helped, but so did Edmund's research, shopping four dealerships on price alone, and not least shopping on the last day of the month (when the salesman work hard to get their quotas).

What a great car, great warrenty, and great price. Thanks to all who have helped.

Congrats on your new GT! $12k for a car like the GT is an incredible bargain, isn't it? That is only about $1000 more than I paid for a Civic LX in 1988. And that was discounted! It was a nice little car, but nothing like the GT. And I paid more than $12k for a Sentra XE 2-door with roll-down windows in 1992. Is this a great time to buy cars, or what?

Has anyone bought an Elantra GT in South Carolina? Looks like there are only two dealers in the state! I moved here from DC, where there were two or three in my county alone... and at this point I'm going back up to buy one, since the savings of being in a non-exclusive market will outweigh paying sales tax to each state. I wrote a letter to the local dealer (only one within fifty miles) last week, offering to do business with them if they'd even come close to what I could pay back home, and have yet to receive a reply. Any thoughts?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Why do you think you need to pay sales tax in each state? Is that the way it works out East? In my state (MN), if you show proof that you paid sales tax when you bought the car, you only have to pay the difference (if any) between that state's sales tax and Minnesota's sales tax.
  • bikerpabikerpa Member Posts: 68
That would be ideal... I'm going in to pay property tax Friday on my current '95 Sonata, and will discuss it then if I can. Moving across state lines is just a hassle, I guess; I'm not that familiar with procedures. Thanks for the idea.

I bought mine about a month and a half ago (end of Feb. 2004)

    2002 GLS
    21,000 miles
    Auto
    ABS & Traction Control
    CD Player
    Price paid: $8,950

Almost like new - a little wear on the floor mats & a couple of dings in the rear bumper (typical in NYC)

No problems as of yet, and I love it. I installed some bumper guards on the rear to try to prevent more dings.

Bought it at Hyundai of Manhattan - they were very good, no pressure.

I felt it was a good deal at the time, compared to other Elantras I was looking at in the area. One dealer had the same car, about the same price, but with 38,000 miles on it! Does anyone think $8,950 with 21,000 miles was a good deal?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes, but what's more important is that you believe you got a good deal and are happy with the car. It's about $4500 under what a new GLS would cost, so you saved all that depreciation.

Wanted to share my experience. Thanks to help from Edmunds I'm very pleased with my deal. I used e-mail and phone calls to get information first from several places then went to one dealership and worked out a price based on the quotes I had received.

New GT 4-door sedan; black; accessory group 7 (sunroof, no ABS); manual; Boston area

    car price: 12,700.00
    MA sales tax (5%): 635.00
    title and registration: 86.00
    documentary preparation: 165.00
    TOTAL: 13,586.00

Elantra GLS A/T package#2. $11,100 (including rebate and extra $500 for NY auto show) plus taxes and registration

Suntrup in St Louis jacks the price of the GT to absurd levels by adding Market Value Adjustment ($1450), fabric protection ($280), pre-delivery inspection ($250-$350), paint protection ($280). After walking their lot and seeing these bogus add-ons I kept walking. No doubt they also use the equally bogus DOC fee. MVA and DOC are just the dealer saying "Give me your money just because you're stupid enough to do it". I'm surprised that anyone reading Edmund's postings would pay for these things.
  • ytbhytbh Member Posts: 11
    I think that's a pretty good deal. I got a GLS with package 5 for $12K. (see post #520)

I'm picking up a fully loaded (package 8 - ABS, traction control, power sunroof) Tidal Blue Automatic GT Hatchback for $14,000 - including fees, about $14,850. They're even throwing in a cargo net.

I worked with Van Horn Hyundai here in Wisconsin - http://www.fdlhyundai.com/ . They have been amazing from start to finish. I received a quote from a local dealership on a similar car (but black) for $14,500. When FDL Hyundai's sales guy, Scott, gave me a call, he suggested they could beat the price by $400. There wasn't any screwing around, he said it right off the bat. I asked a few questions and we were off the phone.

I thought I wanted a manual transmission and they told me they'd have whatever I want, however I want it, in stock within two to five days. That's extremely responsive, as far as I'm concerned. For various reasons, I decided to stick with an automatic.

They called me up this morning and we refreshed the details of our intial conversation. An hour later, the sales manager called me and gave me a flat $14,000 with the cargo net tossed in.

That's when they asked about financing, but I was prepared. My bank had quoted me between 5%-5.5% for 60 months. I'm 22 and have very limited credit history, though it's all good, so I've been outright denied by a number of online loan agencies. I gave them my info and they got back to me three hours later, offering me 4.89% for 60 months. Damn! :)

There was never any pressure to buy. There was never any rush on me. The salesmen were just straight-forward and gave me a solid deal - not at all what I was expecting. The dealership is an hour and a half drive away, but it's worth it.

Now, to find a way to get there and pick up my new car...
  • bikerpabikerpa Member Posts: 68
feelthesin - I appear to be in a similar boat; I'm thinking I want to buy a stickshift GT, I'm 24 and it'll be my first new car (& first stick), and I'm driving from SC to Maryland to get it next weekend. Can you go into detail on why you went with an auto? I'm trying to sop up all pertinent info for my own decision, and I'm currently leaning towards the fun-to-drive side of things, but I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
  • dglozmandglozman Member Posts: 178
GLS A/T base, sterling. Paid $12,515 out the door (including NY tax 8.625%)Plus they gave me floor mats and cargo net.
I think its a good deal. Could I did any better? Maybe, but I didn't want to waste much time. Everything was done over the internet. I just went there and signed the papers (no last minute surprises)
  • nottinghamnottingham Member Posts: 1
I just picked up a new Black GLS with a/t for $11,580 otd, including tax, everything. Huffines in Plano, very pleasant buying experience, no pushy salesman. I don't know how they can sell such great value cars at such a low price. I agreed the price by phone, after asking them to match an competitor's advertised price. They beat it by $300. Even got some free mats.

I have one question hopefully someone can help me with. I want to swap-out the radio with a Radio/CD; is this a simple enough exercise? I'm thinking of picking up something at Best Buy... are all these radio's interchangeable? Appreciate any advice ... or even recommendations. I'm looking for something cheap that will play CD-R's.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
It should be pretty painless as the Elantra uses a standard single DIN slot. You may have noticed while shopping the Elantras that the GT has a Kenwood MP3 unit that Hyundai has OEMed, and Hyundai dealers sell Kenwood units as options--probably for a lot more than you could get a comparable unit at a place like Best Buy however. The people at Best Buy can probably tell you if it's going to be a problem.
  • bikerpabikerpa Member Posts: 68
The Kenwood CD player that Hyundai sources for stock on the GT is Kenwood's part number KDC-MPV622 - they're available on eBay for $160 or so, or you could find someone with a GT who's upgrading and see how much they'd want for their old one. It's aapparently a pretty slick system; retail is around $240 (or more, if you buy one that says "Hyundai" on it from the dealer). Does MP3 CDs also.

Hey folks - there are a couple of things I need to note here...

First, this isn't the best place to be talking about such things as Elantra stereos since it is a discussion specifically about what folks paid for their Elantras and how the purchase experience progressed. There are other Elantra discussions where these things should be pursued - try the Make/Model search on the left side of the page to find them. (Or email me if I can help - I'll be glad to do so.)

The other thing is that we can't use these discussions to buy and sell things - anything at all. So please don't make posts that ask for something like that to happen. Check the Membership Agreement (linked at upper left) and/or the Rules of the Road (linked at the top of the page) for the full details.

    Thanks!

I went with auto because I'm planning to move to the Dallas area soon, and I have no experience with a manual transmission. The last two times I've been down there, I have witnessed many accidents and I was almost hit a number of times. Bearing that in mind, I decided that the best way to go, for me, would be to stay with what I'm comfortable with.

I finally picked up my car from the dealership yesterday. The GT Hatchbacks are a lot better looking in person than they are in the pictures - particularly the rear. But, to my experience. I arranged everything ahead of time so that, when I got to the dealership, there wasn't a whole lot to talk about. I was given a tour of the car and went on a test drive. The salesguy kept trying to tell me things about the car, but I've read so much that he had a hard time finding anything I didn't know already - we laughed about that. The test drive sealed the deal for me.

After filling out most of the paperwork, the salesguy explained to me that he only gets an insignificant commission from the sale price of the car. However, he said, Hyundai will be contacting me and having me complete a customer satisfaction survey - how happy I am with how I was treated and the car itself determines the bonus that the salesguy gets. He laid it on pretty thick that he'd really like a strong rating. At that point, I asked him to give my friend (who drove me two hours to the dealership) a free tank of gas, and he handed us a $20. That, combined with everything else, definitely is going to get him a bonus. :)

At the end of the day, it went incredibly smoothly. I was only at the dealership for a little more than an hour, in total, and there was never any pressure in any way. Just a very friendly, open conversation and a great deal of explaining every last feature of a feature-rich vehicle.

I really couldn't be happier with my choice (or that price!).

Stopped in a dealership in Calumet City IL, Thomas Nissan/Hyundai and got the best deal ever. 0% for 60 months on '04 Hyundai Elantra Sedan (Rally Red). In and out with all paperwork done in under 1 hour. Total price $16,363 (car, gap insurance, warranty, taxes, title, and license). Only thing not included is CD, ABS, Trunk Net, and Expanded Trip Odometer feature. Don't miss any of that. Great deal because there is no interest and I can pay extra that goes directly to the car. Highly recommend new purchasers take Gap Insurance and extended warranty and wait for next 0% promotion (watch your local paper and television ads).
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Congrats on your new Elantra! The 0% financing (in lieu of $2000 rebate) offer expires May 2. There's always the chance it will be extended, but you never know. There was a $500 loyalty rebate on the Elantra in March, and it was not extended--I was able to use it fortunately, plus a $500 regional auto show bonus. If you don't mind, could you tell us how much you paid for your extended warranty and what kind it is, i.e. is it the Hyundai 10/100 bumper-to-bumper transferrable warranty? I might still get one for my new GT if I can find a good price. My dealer quoted $1299 when I bought the GT, and I decided to pass.
  • bikerpabikerpa Member Posts: 68
feelthesin, thanks for the advice. Ended up going with the manual; I grew up in the DC area, and now living in Columbia SC, what they consider "traffic" is a nice drive on a weekend for me.

Picked it up yesterday! Sterling 5s hatch, no options... I forget the final exact numbers, but they had the car itself for $11,622 + $99 dealer processing (including 2k rebate). I extended the bumper-to-bumper out to 100k for $859 (backy - hope this helps). Total out-the-door was just over $12,800, financed at 3.49% through my credit union including gap protection. Fitzgerald, in Gaithersburg, MD. Google 'em for the website; they post sick-low prices online and don't play around. Salesman was my age (24), finance guy was cool, sales manager made everything easy, they're gonna get good feedback on the survey.

A side note: having a patient salesman makes all the difference. I hadn't driven a stick more than around a parking lot, and when I laid rubber and peeled out of the dealership lot (oops) he was totally cool with it. Guess I'd already made it clear that I was buying the car and the test drive was a formality.

Finally got our new Elantra GT in the silver color yesterday. We were quoted about the invoice price on the car minus the $2000 manufacturers rebate and the $400 "recent" college grad rebate (I am 23 months out of graudation, haha). We purchased from Alexandria Hyundai just out of Washington, D.C. I strongly recommend you check out their internet sales if you're looking for a Hyundai in the DC area. They gave us a good price and didn't try to pull anything on us when we got there.

One thing that got weird though was in the finance department. We were going to pay cash for the car, but since we used the $400 recent grad rebate, we had to finance with Hyundai Motor Finance. We were urged to not make a down-payment (even though we wanted to a make a large one) . . . maybe the loan officer gets a commission based on the size of the loan originated . . . I don't know. All I know is what we initially proposed (a large down-payment) was *NOT* well received. Not a big deal though in retrospect. We ended up financing and got a very poor rate, but since there is no prepayment penalty we'll pay it off right away . . .

    In summary:
    car plus destination ~$15,500
    minus manufacturer's rebate of $2000
    minus new grad rebate $400
    plus taxes, tags, processing ~$900

OTD: $0 LOL, I can see why credit is so seductive, I don't like it. We aren't going to pay a penny on this vehicle until June.

Final cost before any interest (which will probably end up around $50 I'd guess): $13,985

The car is driving wonderfully and looks good. We love all the features. We have absolutely no regretful feelings after making the purchase . . . that's a sign to us that we made a great choice.

I went on the Hyundai USA internet site and built my Elantra online. I requested a dealer quote. Got an e-mail a few hours later from the nearest Dealer. Got my Elantra GLS 5 spd 4 door silver with package 2 for $11,600 out the door. They had to trade another dealer for it, they didnt have any 5 spd cars on the lot. I pick the car up this morning at 9:00 AM. They gave me a new Sonata for a loaner, nice! They even gave me 12 months or 12,000 miles maintenance for free.

Hello All..............Just purchased a 2002 Elantra GT hatch. Had to go some to get one as it seems there are very, very few folks trading in. Got the Tidal blue(not a scratch on it) w/ 35,000 mi., auto and roof, brand new Bridgestones, fresh brake pads...$9000 plus tax. Thought this was a good deal. Bluebook's at $10,900 so.......... Only thing I'm missing out on is the drivetrain warranty, but still have 36 mo. and 25,000 miles on the bumper to bumper, and since i only drive about 8000 mi. a year, it works out great. Besides...if something goes wrong later i should be able to get it fixed with the approx. $4000 bucks i saved on an '04. This is one time that the infamous low resale and/or trade in value of the Hyundai has worked in my favor!!!!

I found an Elantra GLS brand new AUTO AC nothingelse included.

I am paying $11,583 out the door meaning including everything.

DO you guys think this is a good price?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Invoice price for a '04 GLS (assuming you are getting a '04, not a holdover '03) after the $2000 rebate is $11,513, so you are getting the car for well under invoice after taxes and fees are included. That seems like a good deal to me! (P.S. Edmunds.com's TMV price for that car in Houston is $11,697 before T&L.)
  • misternomisterno Member Posts: 11
    Guess what

I found a 2002 Elantra GT with 24K on it all options included Automatic and selling for $7,995

I am thinking to buy this cuz it has all the options in it. But then no 100K miles warranty.

    What do you guys think?

If it's in great shape (no accidents, interior good etc.) and has proof of regular maintenance, the used GT would be a great buy despite the improvements in the '04 model. Be sure to take it on a long test drive and take it up to highway speeds over 65 mph to make sure it doesn't have the "shimmy" problem that some Elantras have--it can be hard to get rid of.
  • misternomisterno Member Posts: 11
what is the shimmy problem you are talking about, please explain

Hi, I paid $13351+Tax+Tag+Title, for Elantra GT, no sunroof, no ABS.
The dealer looks OK. Although Fitzgerald Mall (Maryland) has no haggle price of $13000, but I think I got good value for my trade in - so basically it comes down to the same value.
  • bikerpabikerpa Member Posts: 68
Nicely done indeed. Buying from Fitzgerald I feel like I got a great price, but only getting $200 on my trade was a bit sobering. I can't blame them, though. A '95 Sonata with 153k on it isn't going to bring customers stampeding to their used car department.

    Hello everyone.

My girlfriend is in the market for a new car. After much research and test driving a few cars she decided to buy an 04 GT Sedan with moonroof, ABS and TCS. She loves everything about the car. She says that it's "cute."

Anyways, my question is how much should she pay for this car? The TMV for the car is $14,440. With taxes and registartion we should be looking at about $15,500. Is this a good price or should she offer something along the lines $14,000?

She's paying cash for the car. I don't know if this will be an advantage for her. We live in jersey City, NJ and the dealer that we visted is Difeo Hyundai.

Does anyone have any experiences dealing with this dealer? Any recommendations to other dealers?

Thank you for your time and help.

I purchased my Elantra from Global Automall up in North Plainfield and they were very good dealership. I got my 2001 Elantra GLS almost loaded (with alloy wheels), including moonroof, for $12,500. I went to Difeo Nissan (right next door), to check out a used Altima a few months ago, and they were very pushy salesmen with arrogant managers... I have had service in Difeo Hyundai and can you belive that these comedians wanted to charge me $165 for new Michellin tire!!! I was like :O !!!!!!!!!! Take my advice, check out Global or even Maxon Hyundai up in Route 22.. even better, get multiple dealer quotes from their website at hyundaiusa.com. Something I should of done.. lol :/

dealer offered 2004 hyundai elantra gls for 12,610--payments of $255 for 66 months with 4.99%--im making no downpayment because im trying to get rid of a 94 mercury topaz but still owe $902 on a loan for a 98 buick century--would like to trade mercury and break even--i feel that dealer can offer me a better deal--but $2000 incentive ends 6/1/04--ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO MAKE THIS A BETTER DEAL--total loan is $16830...based on 66 months at 255...
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
There's no way we can comment on how good a deal you have unless you provide more details on the car--stick or automatic, and what options. Also, Hyundai has had a $2000 rebate on Elantras for several months, so it is unlikely they will not renew it. But you never know. They did take off the $1000 loyalty rebate at the end of March.
  • sully000sully000 Member Posts: 2
that price of 12610 was after all the rebates--the elantra gls was listed around 15100--car is an automatic with cassette player--i think it was based on package#2--very basic stuff in car--no cd player--maybe cruise control--payments of 255 for 66months at 4.99% financing--i did find another dealer who dropped it to 11900--payments down to $237 for 66 months--exact same vehicle--i have not purchased the vehicle yet--just wondering if its a good deal or not
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Invoice for a pkg 2 GLS automatic is $11,679 after the $2000 rebate. So you are getting down pretty close to invoice. You might try going in Monday, the last day of the month, to see if they'll come down a little more--they may have some dealer holdback money left on the car or other incentives to add to their profit. Can't hurt to ask for a little lower price--if they say no and you walk out and they don't try to stop you, they've gone as low as they will go.
  • gfoxbruinsgfoxbruins Member Posts: 7
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance do any real research on my new Elantra GLS, since my intention when I left home that morning was to buy a Kia Spectra instead. However, after calling/visiting Kia dealerships and not getting quite the deal I wanted I decided just to "poke my head in" at the local Hyundai dealership... and I ended up leaving a couple hours later with what I feel like was a pretty good deal:

Elantra GLS 5-speed, base model (Sterling color)
    Floor Mats
    Trunk Cargo Net
    Mud Guards
    $12,800 - $2000 rebate = $10,800 (+title/registration fees)

It looks like invoice was $12,922 for this car, so I think I got it for $122 BELOW invoice without even knowing I was doing so! Assuming a 2% dealer holdback of $258, they would have only profitted about $136 on me then, unless I'm missing something. I talked the Hyundai dealership into matching a price quote I had for a stripped down Kia Spectra (no power anything except that it had A/C) and they eventually did match it! It was the end of the month, and I was paying cash which may have helped somehow I think. The only slight "bummer" was that the car already had 160 miles on it, so I assume it had been test driven quite a few times (and I'm hoping the previous drivers were kind to it...)

But still a good deal, no?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes, a great deal! Don't worry about the dealer's profit. They would not have offered the car at that price unless they thought it was a good deal for them. First, there may be hidden incentives to the dealership, e.g. for selling a certain number of cars in the month--which is why end of month is a good time to buy. Second, 5-speed base models are not as popular as automatics with more options, so they are probably glad to get it off the lot. I don't think paying cash had anything to do with it. They probably would have preferred that they use their financing.
