The opinions here were invaluable! My broker, whom I've used for 20+ years, passed when I decided not to lease (the car has awful residual value, and he didn't feel he could come-up with a decent price in southern CA)--he's in northern CA. CarsDirect.com had a price more than $500 above what I ultimately paid, and there was too much BS with the "Vehicle Specialist." I blanketed over 20 dealers with specific requests on four different web sites. The clarity and quality of the FIRST email responses told me a lot. KEYES HYUNDAI (in Van Nuys) had the bottom-line price nailed down by the second email. I walked in the dealership the next day and it was a done deal. The salesperson showed my a printout of the vehicle cost, which matched my Consumer Reports printout, and by the time we signed the "financing" papers, I had saved another $130. There was no pressure tactics and everyone with whom we had contact was extremely polite and EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL. This was easier than walking into Sears and buying a refrigerator! I should also mentioned that I had my financing pre-arranged, before I saw the dealer. I PAID $220 above dealer cost, so I got part of the dealer holdback. THE BEST CAR BUYING EXPERIENCE EVER! This is my 5th new car out of 8 purchases/leases.
I could not agree more. I bought both my 2001 Elantra and my wife's 2003 Sonata LX from Keyes Hyundai. Best price and best car buying experience in Los Angeles. They also have a great service department.
So I just got my new baby... a 2003 GT Hatchback, a cute little silver one and I can't be happier! I got a great deal($13900 OTD) which i think is a thousand under invoice (according to cars direct), which made my day. I did however deal stictly with my dealership's online department which gives by far the best price possible. Thank you West Palm Hyundai! I didn't get ABS b/c well, they didn't have any in. But I love my car and it looks great. I was looking at a protege' but for the price it wasn't anywhere near comparible to my Hyundai. With my 5500 down, i'm only paying 169 a month which includes the tire guard warranty which, i actually had to use today b/c i got a flat tire... wouldn't you know! Service on that was quick and painless! Hope this one keeps me happy for a long time to come!
Anyone else see where Chung Mong-hun, the chairman of Hyundai Asan, killed himself this morning? He is being investigated for funnelling $100 million to North Korea and for doctoring Hyundai's books and siphoning off billions of dollars. Hyundai Motors is a separate company, but it is run by his older brother. Hmmmm, could get interesting--not too interesting I hope!
My son bought a GLS 5-speed with power everything, keyless entry, side airbags, A/C for $9,995 in Ohio. This was last December.
I see the same ads in the newspaper for the same car at $10,500, so either the price went up or the deals aren't as good as they were at the end of last year.
Just picked up pewter 2003 GT hatchback - automatic.
Dealer quoted and delivered $12,200. (includes 1500 rebate).
Add TTL, we were 13,300 Out the door. No games, switches etc. I'd definitely recommend him.
Hyundai of New Rochelle, Westchester County, NY He has a red and black (w sunroof)left. Told me if I bring in a customer he'll give me $100. If you go use my ref. and I'll give you 50 of it.
Thanks to all who have posted here at Edmunds. The info and network of everyones experience was invaluable.
BTW car is for my daughter... so sorting and deciding on a car, challenging...dealing with the dealers who wanted to sell at sticker, annoying...feeling you got a good deal and seeing your child excited...priceless.
I got to know a dealer in town through some contacts and he has offered to sell me a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS(automatic transmission) for $9000 (plus taxes). The vehicle has 10,250 miles on it (a fleet vehicle) and has all the extras (sunroof, cruise control, CD player, keyless entry, alarm and all the power features). The only option that is not on the car is ABS brakes. The vehicle is in excellent condition (no dents, scratches and the car fax report gives a clean history).
Is $9000 (plus taxes) a good price for the vehicle? I test drove the vehicle and love it. Thanks.
The best discounted price in the L.A. area on a 2003 similarly equipped would be around $11,000 -- they are very competitive here. Prices vary across the country.
The 2002 seems like a good buy at $9,000. However, something to consider -- the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty is not fully transferable. I believe the powertrain warranty reverts to the same term as the 5 year/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, which is fully transferable.
Still a good warranty, but not as good as the original...
Thanks for the input. I didn't realize the warranty dropped to 5 yr/60,000 miles.
Was there any type of significant change in the 2002 and 2003 models of Elantra GLS (exterior design or engine etc.)?
Secondly, the price for a 2003 Elantra (where I live) with above options is close to $13,400 (after a lot of negotiating). That price includes the $1500 rebate and also includes the destination fee. That is quite a bit of price increase compared to the LA market (where according to you it is about $11,000 for a similar vehicle).
So I can save almost $4500 by going with 2002 model with 10,000 miles. I got to make a decision by the end of this week. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.
Yes, our market is very competitive -- a base 2003 Elantra GLS with automatic transmission is $9,988 (all in stock @ MRSP of approx. $14,500 - $14,700 I believe). I purchased a base (with auto) in 2001 for my daughter for $10,988. So the higher rebates have dropped the price further.
The Elantra GLS has remained virtually unchanged from 2001 to the present. The base model has the power equipment (windows, doors), but option packages have changed configuration.
Check carsdirect.com for prices in your area. If you feel it is a good deal (and it seems like it is), you can always get an extended warranty if you want. Personally, I feel they are a waste of money and the Elantra has proven to be very reliable.
Also, check out Edmunds long term test of the Elantra. It is very inpressive!
I just purchased a new 2003 Elantra GT for 12K. Is that a good price? Including the rebate it is $1200 less than the invoice. And I suprised my wife for her Birthday. She almost fainted. Its silver, black leather interior, moonroof, four air bags, CD player, power everything, spoiler, cruise, 10 year 100,000 warranty...and is one quick car. I almost bought a used Civic for 12,500 with none of the above expect AC. Glad I didn't. Great Car.
Factory invoice for GT 4-door sedan with manual transmission is $14,223. So if you got it for $12,000 you were $2,223 below factory invoice. Tremendous deal! Congratulations!
I was just offered a 03 5 speed with ABS/traction and option package 3 (power windows/steering/locks/remote/cruise) for $11800. The retail is $14300. Good deal?
I'm from Las Vegas & shopped around. Best price offered was $11,100 sale price plus outrageous dealer fees. Decided to purchase from AutoNation.com in Scottsdale, AZ. Got a white 2003 Elantra GLS w/ 5 spd trans. Optional features: CA emissions, Convenience pkg, Keyless entry w/ alarm & a Kenwood MP3 player. MSRP was $14,289. After rebates & AutoNation discounts, sale price was $10,803 (plus: Shipping $135,Docs $299, Drive tag $35, Gap Ins $339). Total was $11,611 plus tax & registration. It was really easy and wasted my time at the dealers.
I have been a Honda, Mazda and Subaru fanatic since 1979. My second Honda (81 civic) came with power nothing, 1.5 liter, carb, 5spd and stickered for $6500. 22 years later, I buy an Elantra, with 2 liter, fuel injected multi valve eng. Pwr windows, locks, mirrors, ABS, traction control, remote locks w/security. and a nicer layout, larger interior for only $9774.38. Pretty sweet. MSRP $14502.00 discount $3227.62 (Hard nose negotiation) less rebate $1500.00 net $9774.38 less trade $260.00(92Mazda protege w/201,225mi) taxable amt $9514.38 tax 6% $570.87 title, fees,pl $127.75 Grand total $10213.00(ck # 2818) MSRPincludes CC,Keyless remote w/Alarm, Antilock brakes W/Traction control, floor mats, mud guards and Inland freight! Amazing deal!!
bsilva- sounds like you got a fair deal. Not sure about that shipping and rather high doc charge.
daddioo- thats a great deal! over $3000 off before the rebate! You sure they didn't really give so much more because of low balling your trade-in? I think most people would be happy to get a base GLS at that drive-out (your grand total) price.
tmant- Believe it or not, after haggling, local LV dealers still wanted $11100 sale price on a BASE GLS plus $1400 in Doc fees & tax!!! At Autonation, I got Keyless & MP3 for under $12k. NO trade in, NO down payment, good deal on financing & they delivered to my residence.
I negotiated like I had no trade-in. Then when all was said and done, I asked how much they would give me on a trade. But first I checked Kelly blue book and the NADA. I was hoping for $600-700. They offered $260. I moaned and groaned and basically he said I have him so low on the car, he couldn't give me anything more on a trade and suggested I sell it myself if I wanted more. I didn't feel like selling it on my own so I accepted the $260 and rationalized that even if I paid $9999.99 for the car and got $485.60 on the trade (net effect of zero) I did pretty good!
Nordic White 03 GLS auto w/package 5 (ABS, moonroof, CD, keyless w/alarm), plus CA SULEV, mats and mudguards; 12,500 after rebates, they gave me $5000 for my 01 5-speed GLS w/package 3 (okay, that was sad). Still, I'm pretty happy - it's more of a car and I paid $400 less than I did 2 years ago for my '01. I like some of the new features too (can't leave lights on accidentally or leave key in ignition), plus, the metal and trim seems more solid - no more rinky tinky trunk hood. I'm just going to miss the darn stick shift!
A few days ago I purchased a pewter 2003 Elantra GT hatchback with automatic transmission and window tinting for $12,650 after $1500 rebate. After dealer doc of $295 (rip-off) and TTL (7.8% sales tax in the Phoenix area) the out of door price was $14,200. I shopped and negotiated with 5 Hyundai dealers. This was the best price I thought I could get.
I thought I got a great deal until I read post #423 for $12,200 and #428 for $12,000. Wow - those are terrific prices. How in the world did you manage those prices? I thought I was a tough negotiator - not any more.
I originally was looking at a 2003 GLS but after comparing it with the 2003 GT, I thought the GT was a much better value, especially since I wanted the CD player upgrade. I don't understand why Hyundai equips the GLS with a cassette deck.
I don't think there are many 2003 GTs left if you want to get the $1500 rebate.
I compared the Elantra with the Civic, Corolla, Protoge, and Sentra. I definately think the Elantra is the best deal going if you want a compact, especially with the $1500 rebate. Good price was a good car.
Just bought my 2003 GT Hatchback, automatic, moonroof, abs/tcs, Chiati Red several weeks ago. Previous got a quote for 13,900 out-the-door from an internet dealer(turns out the dealership is only an hour away from where I live.) Drove by a local dealership to check out the colors of the GT with expectation to purchase from the other dealership. Well, this dealership had only one GT left and matched the price. $13,900 out the door. Great. Thanks to this forum for all the advise and comments.
Just got an 03 Elantra GLS, auto, moonroof, cd, abs/trac, keyless/alarm, mudflaps, mats, etching, in Ocean Blue. It was $13,000 otd, after a $700 trade in on my neon. (believe me, $700 was 10 times its value!). This was my first car purchase, and I now know that I could have haggled a bit more on the docs and fees, but I think I'm satisfied with the overall price.
05 Elantra GT Hatchback (Silver), Package 8, Automatic Trans
The last offer was $17,226 before rebates.
I qualify for the $1750 and $500 (military) so after rebates it is: $15,016.
There is a $451 advertising charge that they were adamant about my having to pay because they have to pay it.
TMV invoice is: $16,275 and the Dealer invoice they showed me was: $16,726. I'm not sure where the difference is....
Carsdirect has the same car at $15,203.
I live in Oregon so my DMV fees are only $218. I plan to put $1500 down and throw my fees into the financing so my total over 60 mos. is $13,394...not that this matters as far as...
Did I get a good quote? I thought I'd post this as I peruse the 906 messages in this forum.
Aradtke3, Just got back from vacation and saw your post. I bought my GT from Concord Hyundai in Concord,CA. Actually, I went in to see if they might match a quote of $13,600 otd for a base GT hatchback. They only had a one GT hatchback left which we negotiated to $13,900. I didn't even look at the invoice. It was about 30 minutes of negotiating since I was quite firm with my offer and was late for a dinner engagement. Didn't even drive the car until I picked it up next morning.
I've visited a few local NYC Hyundai dealers over the past two weeks and plan to buy a 2003 Elantra GLS (AT/Standard). My Wife and I are financing through her credit union at 3.5%, and have a 11/29 deadline before we lose the rate. I've avoided talking with any salespeople in depth so far, but have some names and business cards. Now it's time to talk.
I've received Internet quotes from two of them, who each responded with the term "invoice". What that specifically is, they didn't say.. but I'm guessing somewhere around $11,900, which would be the wholesale price with a 4.5% markup. Consumer Reports has the invoice price at $11645.
I plan to go in with a set number based on a 2.5% dealer markup from wholesale ($11677) and a limit of 3.5% ($11790). I'm hoping that the entrance of the new model year has dealers looking to unload a 2003 GLS for $11,700. We are completely flexible with the color, so this may also help in negotiating.
How do recent buyers feel about about this plan? If you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know. Thanks!
At this late date, I imagine that you could get a few hundred dollars below invoice. Try to get the dealer to give you half of the 2% dealer holdback or try to get them to eat some of their dealer doc fees.
You may also want to look at the GT model. For only $1550 more you get leather seats, allow wheels, keyless entry, cruise control, fog lights, 6 speaker CD player, sport tuned, spoiler, purple illuminated inside lights, nicer looking front grill, protective molding, plus more stuff.
In my opinion, the GT model is a much better value if you can afford the additional $1550.
I agree, at this late date you should be able to get a little more off a '03, especially a standard model which is not as desirable than optioned units. If I were you I'd start at $11k. Also make your deal a couple of days before the end of the month if possible; I've heard that's the best time to get a good deal. Some dealers get special incentives based on volume, so they can make money even selling below invoice. Anyway, all the dealer can do is say "no", so it's worth a try. Have a check in your pocket for $11,000 to put on the table to let them know you are serious.
thanks for the advice aradtke and backy. i read through the newspapers on friday and found a local dealer claiming to have a bunch of 03 models on the lot and a supposed $7995. while skeptical, my wife and i each have 780+ credit scores and we did our homework on the car, so we decided to start here.
to make a long story short, our sales guy did the "math" on the deal and of course it comes up to something more like $10,500 before tax for an automatic with standard options. compared to what i've seen here, that looked decent.. but it was his first offer, so i countered that i would pay only $9,500 before tax. at first he said we should begin looking at accents. we declined, thanked him for his help and got up from our seats. he quickly wrote down my number of $9500 and asked if i would initial his sheet with our credit card so his boss would know we were ready to buy. i agreed and he came back 5 minutes later with a handshake. we didn't get a choice of color (nordic white) but that was fine. we added keyless/alarm for a negotiated $500 more in the finance office but there was no pressure for it. we had plates on the car before the end of the day and drove off the lot satisfied. here's the rundown:
$9500 PRICE OF CAR $500 OPTIONS $863 SALES TAX $112 NYS INSPECTION/REG/TAGS $20 PROCESSING FEE ----------------------------- $10995 OUT THE DOOR
on a side note, i'm doing a 10 day payout on the crummy 9.9% financing and going with a 3.9 through a credit union. now i'm on to the other boards!
Let us know how that 03 works out for you down the road.
Backy, I have to agree with you about having a check in your pocket. A dealer has a hard time walking away from cash. I think any fair offer with cash in hand can be made.. just grinding them for a low price does not get dealers attention.. $$$ does!
themanx.. i'll make sure to drop by the boards as i encounter new things with this car. so far, it's been great, though it was sad to see the miles climb past 100....
I bought my 03 GLS with option package 5, 5 spd manual, right off the lot this past July for 11,100 after a $2,000 rebate. It helped that the car had been sitting on the lot for months and was manual trans (seems everyone wants auto these days). They came down $1000 under invoice. The exterior of the car was not as pristine as a car right off the delivery truck. I found a few small scrapes, but not until days later in the bright sun.
My boyfriend & I are first time car buyers that live in the metro Phoenix area. We looked at a champagne 03 Elantra ELS automatice w/sunroof, airbags, CD and tinted windows. The sticker price is 15,767 (minus a 1,500 rebate). We have 12,000 cash and a trade in car w/a kelly blue book value of 1,240. Is 12,000 plus the trade-in a fair out of the door price? -This will have to be a final firm price- What questions should we ask? Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.
According to Edmunds.com's TMV calculator, based on Phoenix zip code 85025 (I just picked one at random), This car has a "true market value" of $13,092 after rebate. So depending on taxes and license charges in your area, an out-the-door price of $13,240 is pretty agressive. But you can always go for it, they could say "yes." If you bring a check with you for $12,000 and lay it on the table, and of course get your car as clean and shiny as it can be, it will help. That KBB value is the trade-in value, right?
I think that's a great price on a new '04 GLS auto with ABS. BTW, if the dealer said the car has a 2.4L engine they don't know what they're talking about--it's a 2.0L engine.
by the $2000 trade in credit, I mean that the dealer said that he possibly can give me the $2000 crdit without asking me for a trade-in car, which means I don't need to bring him a trade-in car but still get the $12,265 drive price
An hour ago, I just heard from a friend that he bought a 2003 Mazda protege, which has all the options I got, plus sunroof, 6-CD-changer, $11,700 before TTL, which is $5,000 off MSRP. He is trying to pursuade me to buy a protege instead, what do you guys think?

The 2002 seems like a good buy at $9,000. However, something to consider -- the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty is not fully transferable. I believe the powertrain warranty reverts to the same term as the 5 year/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, which is fully transferable.

to make a long story short, our sales guy did the "math" on the deal and of course it comes up to something more like $10,500 before tax for an automatic with standard options. compared to what i've seen here, that looked decent.. but it was his first offer, so i countered that i would pay only $9,500 before tax. at first he said we should begin looking at accents. we declined, thanked him for his help and got up from our seats. he quickly wrote down my number of $9500 and asked if i would initial his sheet with our credit card so his boss would know we were ready to buy. i agreed and he came back 5 minutes later with a handshake. we didn't get a choice of color (nordic white) but that was fine. we added keyless/alarm for a negotiated $500 more in the finance office but there was no pressure for it. we had plates on the car before the end of the day and drove off the lot satisfied. here's the rundown:
$9500 PRICE OF CAR
$500 OPTIONS
$863 SALES TAX
$112 NYS INSPECTION/REG/TAGS
$20 PROCESSING FEE
-----------------------------
$10995 OUT THE DOOR
on a side note, i'm doing a 10 day payout on the crummy 9.9% financing and going with a 3.9 through a credit union. now i'm on to the other boards!
Let us know how that 03 works out for you down the road.
Backy, I have to agree with you about having a check in your pocket. A dealer has a hard time walking away from cash. I think any fair offer with cash in hand can be made.. just grinding them for a low price does not get dealers attention.. $$$ does!

i'll make sure to drop by the boards as i encounter new things with this car. so far, it's been great, though it was sad to see the miles climb past 100....
great price!
Bronxbuyer, thanks for the compliments on my site.
I am trying to find good links for other GLS owners.

Lay that check down and be serious and they will bite.
Remind them that it is an 03, and you are doing them a favor as they have 04's all over the lot.
Good luck and let us know if it works out!

The dealer said possibly he can waive the $2000 trade-in credit, which then make the price before TTL to be $11,000
Drive out price will be $12,625
pls give your opinion thanks :-)
$13,999 (after the $750 rebate)
Not sure what you mean by the $2000 trade in credit.. are you trading in a car and getting $2000 for it?
If so, with taxes and docs, if you can get it for $12,625 that is a great price.

dealer said that he possibly can give me the $2000 crdit without asking me for a trade-in car,
which means I don't need to bring him a trade-in car but still get the $12,265 drive price
An hour ago, I just heard from a friend that he bought a 2003 Mazda protege, which has all the options I got, plus sunroof, 6-CD-changer, $11,700 before TTL, which is $5,000 off MSRP. He is trying to pursuade me to buy a protege instead,
what do you guys think?
