I'm glad I read your post about Suresky having phenomenal pricing. I was about to go with Curry, but when I saw your message I called Suresky.

I just left them buying a Sonata GLS Automatic. It was 14400 with the rebates and such. With Tax and tags it was a few bucks under $16000. I fought to get them to throw in the IPOD wire and after some work, they did.

    I think I did good.

    Thanks ALL!

$16,000 OTD (including all taxes & fees) seems too good to be true.

To clarify: was this a new 2009 (not a demo)? And was it a straight deal with no trade-in allowance? Did your car include Opt. Pkg 2?

I assume it included $1500 loyalty and $750 HMFC rabate, which is sadly not available in April.

Thanks for any additional info you can provide.

I will be going to Suresky this month to get mine. I think your price was right on point
  • tchescat2000tchescat2000 Member Posts: 3
This was a new 2009 straight deal, no trade in. (How would I know if it was a demo?) I asked if it was used for test drives a such and they said no.
No option packages. Just GLS with Automatic. No HMFC rabate. Just the $1500 and $2000 Rebates.

I am scheduled to pick up a Sonata tomorrow but I am having some doubts about my deal. Here is what I am getting (invoice prices):

    STD Sonata GLS: 19,056$
    Popular equipment package: 592$
    Carpeted floor mats: 76$
    Mudguards: 68$
    Cargo net:41$
    iPod cable: 24$
    Cargo tray:76$
    Advertising: 250$
    Delivery charge: 695$

    Total: 20,878

The dealer gave me the usual 3500$ rebates and a bit more, at 17,100$. I would like to check this price with you, here on the forum. I did not notice the advertising fee at first. When I got home I have seen it and I thought that I should have asked the dealer to take it off. I have not signed anything yet, so I still can ask to remove that tomorrow. What do you think?

In addition to taxes, I also have to pay 298$ documents fee and 86$ new plates fee. I am in MA.

It is a buyer's market with new cars filling up the lots at Port Baltimore among others. Depending on your local dealer's inventory there is a lot of room for neg( the bigger the dealer the better). You need to be firm and willing to walk away from the deal. If they know you are a serious well informed buyer they'll deal. The manufacturers rebates do not come out of their pockets. Check Fitz auto mall online for prices which are very good if your willing to travel for a $1000-1500 savings depending on deal your local dealer is offering. Even if you use this info with the dealer to let him know you can get a better deal elsewhere. I would at least insist on 17,100 OTD ( let the dealer cover the doc & plate fees)
  • mrukzmrukz Member Posts: 14
    Thanks for your reply.

    Here is what I got:
Elantra GLS, automatic, slate blue, floor mats, mudguards, cargo net, and iPod cable. All in all, OTD, it was 17,700$. This included registration and all.

I probably could have done a bit better, but I don't really know. At the end, I am happy with the price anyway.

Did this come with the moonroof? What dealership?
  • mrukzmrukz Member Posts: 14
No, no moon roof. Just what I have written and the popular equipment package with power seat and so on. I got it at Gary Rome Hyundai in MA. I paid cash.

That is the title of my final review in the 09 Sonata review section. I urge anyone considering a new Sonata read that review first when it's posted before buying. It is a real disservice to write a review after a day/week/month of new car ownership and consider it a review. Who doesn't love a new car? Writing something like "I just got my car home tonight and I love it!!!" does not constitute a review.

The problems I have in a year of ownership are very disconcerting and have me very concerned about long-term reliability. I bought a new car specifically so I wouldn't have to deal with the kinds of problems I'm dealing with. If you don't want to wait for the review to go up, I have also detailed these problems in the transmission problems forum.

Buyer beware! There is a reason Hyundai is not ranked with the best of Japan. They've made great quality strides in the past 25 years, but they have a ways to go before they're on the level of a Honda or a Toyota. I'm going to take it on the chin trying to sell my one year old Sonata V6 Limited, I know that. That is the price I will pay for not buying an Accord EX-L V6 or a Camry SE V6, both cars I was considering, and both cars that have considerably better resale value than the Sonata.

So I just bought my Sonata '09 GLS automatic for 14400 before tax and tags. Now I see in the paper a lower price, which I confirmed by calling them. The same dealer can now sell me on for 13593! Obviously I can't do anything about it and I'm shocked and pissed at the same time. I thought 14400 was a heck of a deal. I called my sales guy to complain and of course he wasn't interested in doing anything about it. After a ton of arguing about it he was willing to give me 3 free oil changes (onlyt because I haven't done the survey yet), he wants in return for me to give them full 10s on the phone survey.

What do you guys think? It's only been 2-3 days since I bought it!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
As you said, you thought at the time you bought the car that you got a heck of a deal. Times change. Sometimes prices go up, sometimes they go down.

I think you should forget about what other people are paying now for their Sonatas, since you can't do anything about that, and enjoy your new car.

**Just thought I'd repost my earlier post, I purchased this vehicle back in October, just wondering what you guys think**

    MSRP: $26,125
    INVOICE: *$

    Sale Price: $23,645.75

    Sales Tax (8.75%) = $2,069

    Sub total with tax= ($25,714.75)

    NY State Inspection: $10.00
    Doc Fee: $45.00
    Registration Amount: $67.75
    Fee: $12.50

I'm looking at a GLS for my daughter. Here's what I've been quoted:
GLS 4 cyl auto with popular equipment package 3, bluetooth, carpeted floor mats, mud guards, cargo mat and net, and sunroof wind deflector.

According to the dealer's web site, the list price for this is $21,785. With the $2000 rebate, the $1500 loyalty rebate and dealer discounts, I've been given a price of $16,485.

I think the price is pretty good, but I'm looking for a sanity-check here.

    Any feedback or opinions?

  • peabody304peabody304 Member Posts: 2
Replying to my own post here... I may have been wrong about the features being offered at that price. I'm asking the dealer to clarify what is on the GLS at the price he quoted.

I'll post again when I know what I'm talking about.

Pretty good price for that car. One suggestion though--don't get the moonroof wind deflector if it's not already installed or could be removed easily. I have read many testimonials that they really don't help reduce wind that much, and they create wind noise and drag (not to mention possible carwash problems). There's a built-in "spoiler" type wind deflector on the moonroof. Also that can reduce your OTD cost a bit.

Well, it gives you some insight into what you think, and what is. A 08 used Sonata gls auto (msrp $20300) has a trade in value of $11000. $13500 isn't exactly giving an 09 away. I assume you are in the NY NJ or CT area.

That said, you have run into one of the few levers one has over the dealers, which is the phone survey. The fact that they mentioned it may mean their #'s may be bad for the quarter.

To give them a good survey for $40 in oil changes would be silly. Call the store manager and if you don't get a $1000 check-ski then its all F-ski's. Nothing wrong here, they are just offering $40 and you want $1000. See if he calls back if he initially refuses or blast em in the survey. Promise them all your warranty work (if they do it there). They either go for it or they don't. Then live and learn.

    good luck

You purchased the car, accept the deal you received. If the dealer's price went up would you give the dealer more money. A deal is a deal. They were not holding you hostage.
  • Sandman6472Sandman6472 Member Posts: 7,238
Life is all about timing. Nobody forced you to buy, you did and that's that. Again, if the price went up a few days later, would you run back and offer them the difference? Of course you wouldn't. No one ever in their right mind would do that. And to give them a bad survey is ridiculous and nasty...shows no class at all. They gave you a good deal at the time...you thought so and bought. They owe you nothing and if they gave you good service during the negotiations and you were happy, that's all that matters. When the price of gas started going up late last year, did you run into the store and demand the price it was last week? Again, of course not. There's always that chance of a better deal, you gambled and lost.

Grow up and take some personal responsibility here. You're a grown up for G-d's sake and in life, we have to live with our decisions. Quit whining and just move on and enjoy your new car!

I am in Maryland. Recently I was looking at 09 new sonata GLS, auto, 4 cylinder, with popular equipment package. Email surrounding dealers and got quotes normally asking for about 18,500 OTD.

Today I got an offer of 17,500 OTD. How do you guys think? Please tell me your thoughts.

    Thanks.

    Reply my own post.

I got it for 17,500 OTD.

By the way, don't go to Bobbell Hyundai. They are rude.

Yes. Floor mat, cargo mat, cargo net, mud guards.
  • mrukzmrukz Member Posts: 14
I've got mine for 17,700$ in MA, with floor mats, cargo net, ipod cable. Otherwise, it is the same as yours. So, from my perspective, you got a good deal.

do you qualify for additional rebate? e.g. loyalty, lease...

You must be an illiterate person. This forum is about "car buyers experience", and "especially the buyers of a new Hyundai Sonata".

I am sorry that you got a bad car. Who knows! Not every car is perfect. About comparing Sonata to Camry and Accord: You don't have to be Einstein to know that Hyundai is not as good as both of them in terms of quality. The question is: Is the difference in quality worth about 7 to 8 grands? Yup: An equivalent Camry could be had for about 27 grands, whereas the Sonata was bought by me at 19.5 grands. (Read one of my earlier posts for the model that I bought).

Hyundai serves a market. I am not looking to own a car for 20 years. I am very sure that within 20 years, everyone will be buying hybrids. The car technology is about to experience a generation shift. So to pay more for a Toyota or Honda because they will last a lifetime is not that smart a choice anyway. It's better to get the best with the least buck, and Hyundai is perfect for that.

Oh yes, they do give you a 10 year powertrain warranty. So you are covered for 10 years at the very least.

Please post something when you have some sane things to say.

this is what I think. I think Hyundai sucks. I think the dealers suck especially the Hyundai dealer in Council Bluffs IA I purchased a 2009 Hyundai last August it had 2000 miles on it the only reason I bought it was because it was the color I wanted and the interior color I wanted. I asked about the mileage on it and they said it was from a dealer trade and a couple of test drives. I asked if what a demo or a service vehicle i was told no. The mileage was no big deal until my xm radio went out after 2 weeks and I called Hyunda CS they told me I was not the original owner you see the car was sold in June to someone else so the CS told me I was only getting the 5-60 I called the dealer and they told me that they talked to the Hyundai territory manager and they change their records to give me the 10-100. So I contacted the attorney general in IA and made a complaint. So what the territory manager did was go in and change so I am now the original owner of the car since june of 2009. I took it in the shorts like a previous post said "I would rather not pay the price for a Honda or Toyota" think again mr cheapo the truth of the matter is my Sonata that I paid 16000 for is now worth 9800 in 8 months i went to 12 dealers in 5 cities. They all hit me with in 300 dollars of that figure. I hope Hyundai goes out of business and I hope the dealer goes bankrupt. As far as the people on this blog BUYER BE WARE PS the AG did nothing for me. Since they changed all the records. I guess in IA it's ok to screw the consumer in the eyes of the state government. Buy a Hyundai and save a buck. Guess what Hyundai is selling Sonatas at 13 to 14 grand and they are flooding the market. To those of you who do not understand economics that means like the gentleman who purchased his sonata for 14400 and now they have cut the price to 13500 that he did nothing but lose a 900 dollars in a couple of weeks.
But the truth be known he really lost $5,000 as soon as he took possession of it. Believe m Honda and Toyota that doesn't happen you may pay more but you get a better car that is a asset not a liability. Hyundai hope you go broke. the TM for Hyundai I hope you get fired for your dishonesty may you rot in hell. :lemon:

Under $10,000 Sonata, I have read posts on this board about Hyundai dealers selling for 10,000 or below, can any one point me in the right direction. I want two for a taxi business; I will import myself into Canada. Warranty not important as will not cover Taxi use any way, any colour other then red or black, 4 cylinder auto paying cash. Looking for best deal for two.
Within 1000 miles Washington state preferred will pay a small finders fee $200 each if any one can set the deal up for me delivery anytime next 3 months, may consider used ay right price.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
First, you won't find a new Sonata under $10k, and there have been no posts here about a new Sonata under $10k. It's pretty easy to find used Sonatas under $10k on the Web. For example, you can use the used car finder here at Edmunds.com or some other site like cars.com or vehix.com to search for Sonatas under $10,000 within 1000 miles of Washington state. As an example, I just did a search within 500 miles of Seattle (98101 zip) and found 70 Sonatas under $10k at cars.com. These included Sonatas in the 2006-8 years. These sites have photos and info on powertrain so it's easy to find a car that meets your requirements. Good luck.
  • abagriabagri Member Posts: 11
wow... looks to me like you could've saved yourself a lot of angst with a little homework. Fact 1: Any new car - including Honda / Toyota, depreciates 10%-15% in value as soon as it is driven off the lot. Fact 2: Japanese cars hold their value better than Hyundais. This is well known, so please don't blame Hyundai for your lack of knowledge.

Also it seems you got shafted by a crooked dealer, but after some follow up, you got the 10-100 warranty you wanted.

So I'm really not sure what your point is here.
  • miffedmiffed Member Posts: 36
It's not that I didn't do my homework and yes the dealer was not honest. But I think the thing that makes it so dishonest is the way Hyundai territory manager treated me. Changing the date of the sale of the vehicle after the original owner purchased it in June of 2009 and then changing the Hyundai records to show I was the original owner in August of 2009 is crimininal. So I guess trusting a car company to do the right thing is beyond mine and your comprehension. Screw that I think everyone should buy one and experience the Hyundai feeling. I did and like I said before it will never happen again. My reason for telling my story is simple I wanted to advise the reader to be careful when they bought these pieces of crap. That the simple truth of the matter is if you buy a Hyundai you own it and don't look for Hyundai to do the right thing. As far as researching this vehicle I did. It was a cheap vehicle for my son who is in high school. At the time of purchase I couldn't buy a used car for the price I gave for this. New tires new motor warranty. Screwed blued and tattooed. So from me to you I hope you don't have any problems with one. I have a friend who has a 2007 they shipped the seat back to California from the Midwest to have the airbag sensor replaced. His car was left outside the dealership why this took place. Hailstorm comes through and $2,500.00 damage the dealer said sorry and Hyundai said sorry that happened. Otherwise the car would have been inside his garage. They paid for the sensor but it cost him dearly. Save yourself and buy a Honda.

Congratulations on your Sonata. Because we've owned 3 Elantras, with a total of 200,000 miles and only two repairs that I ever had to pay for, I decided to get a Sonata, since it has all the features I would want in an entry-level lux car.

So this evening I'm scheduled to pick up an '09 Limited I-4, black / cocoa, with navigation, for $21,699 out the door. That seems to be a good deal in the Atlanta area. And they're extending the powertrain warranty to 20 / 200,000, and you can get the maintenance done anywhere, not just atthe dealer.

I just bought a Sonata on 4/11/2009 and wanted to share my experiences. I paid $14,500 (dealer sticker price was $21,195) for a brand new 2009 Sonata GLS 2.4 4cyl 5speed. I love it. I bought it from Pearson Hyundai in Richmond, VA. It's Slate Blue with the gray interior.

The first thing that stands out to me is the great gas mileage I get! The car is fun to drive and the 4cyl 2.4 engine has plenty of zip to get around town or merge onto the interstate.

I drove a lot of other mid-size sedans while shopping, and I have to say that the Sonata is hands down the best deal for the money.

    What I like:

The aggressive looking front end, very stylish exterior, interior room, fantasitc gas mileage, instrument panel, ride comfort, and the trunk is bigger than my first apartment (seriously, that trunk is massive).

    What I don't like:

I found that I'm hard-pressed to find something wrong with the car, but I wanted to put something here. So, here are my (admittedly very picky) issues with the car. The passenger side sun visor does not come with the extention like the driver's side, the engine can be a little bit loud at high RPM in low gears, and...uh...that's really it.

I have to say, I am extremely happy and pleased with the '09 Sonata, and would recomend it to anyone!
  • huhuhuhu Member Posts: 10
congratulations on the new Sonata. Is 14,500 out of the door price you paid? If so, that is terrific!
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
That $14,500 is a great price.

However, the dealer sticker of $21,195 is $1800 higher than MSRP for a Sonata GLS stick shift, unless you have every option available. which would still be less than dealer sticker. The dealer sticker probably included dealer add-ons, such as window etching, pin stripes, fabric protectors, etc.

MSRP, including destination, is $19,395 and invoice is $18,617 (without options), so you still got a great deal.

Hope yours treats you as well as my '05 and my brother's '07 have treated us.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Well... he didn't say he bought a stick shift Sonata. He said he bought a "5 speed" Sonata. For 2009, all Sonatas sold in the U.S. are "5 speed." Would be nice to know if it's a stick or automatic.
  • james1982james1982 Member Posts: 73
    It's a stick shift.

The $14,500 price I got included things like window etching, floor mats, fabric protection (glorified Scotch Guard), mud guards, cargo net, iPod cable, and the Blu-Tooth hook up (which I'll never use), but, of course, did not include tax, title, tags, and destination charge.

I'm sure others buying a similar '09 Sonata have gotten a better deal (a quick cruise through the forums here has confirmed that), but for a 26 year old buying his first "brand new" car, I think I made out pretty well, and came in under my budget.

Again, for those reading this thread looking for owner reviews, please do yourself a favor and at least test drive the 2009 Sonata! Talk about "bang for your buck!" This car will suprise you (and your wallet).

backy: Did you qualify for the $1,400 owner loyalty rebate?

One dealer on the phone is offering the automatic Limited 4cyl with moon roof and navigation system for $21,500 OTD (California, including $1,400 of Owner Loyalty Rebate). Is that good?

    thks
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
No, but I got a great price on a VW Certified 2007 Rabbit I bought about 3 weeks ago, to replace a totaled car.

One of the cars on my "buy" list was a 2008 Hyundai Certified Sonata GLS I4 AT with moonroof. It too had a very good price, but I decided to pass on it because it was not a color I prefer (plain white with tan interior; I already have a sedan in that color in the family), it had some minor damage that the dealer seemed reluctant to fix at their asking price, and the car had been smoked in--a lot. Plus the Rabbit is more fun to drive and has better crash safety, and I do like hatchbacks.

Another hatchback-lover! I've been looking at several new cars to replace my '06 Mazda3 s 5-door. I love my '06, but it's a manual transmission and my daily 85-mile commute is killing me. I need an automatic.

Most of the cars on my short list (Hyundai Sonata included) are sedans, but I'm not sure if I can go back to a regular trunk after having my 5-door hatchback!
