skt2, did that include any rebates? Some dealers won't relay any rebate info to the customer unless they ask. You may actually be able to get a couple grand off that price w/ the current rebates.
FWIW, our GLS V6 came out to 19,700 after the rebates were subtracted and the TTL was added (so this was the "out the door" price) I'm guessing I could have got it down a bit more, but I'm still very happy w/ the overall deal.

I'm located in Illinois. The dealer which offered those prices is Pugi of Chicagoland in Downers Grove, IL, a SW suburb of Chicago. As stated, I purchased a 2006 Elantra from them on Christmas Eve, and couldn't be more pleased, either with the price I paid or the way I was treated from beginning to end.

One more thing . . . I just went through the numbers calculating Doc Fee, Electronic Registration Fee (one of that dealer's charges), Tax 6.75%, and License, the total "out the door" price after taking the full rebates on the 2006 Sonata GLS V6 is $17,402.02. This includes the $1,000 GLS V6 rebate, $1000 Hyundai Financing Rebate, and the $1000 Hyundai Loyalty Rebate ($20,402.02 after Doc and TTL, but before the $3K rebate total). I think this is an excellent price for a GLS V6.

Sorry, I got lost in the replies and did not connect you with the earlier history you provided. It does seem like you got quite the deal.

19,831 (19,231+600 dest) as a starting point. Ignore advertising and substract holdback only gets one to ~19400. I wonder what they did to get you to 18900.

I was thinking 19400 would be the bottom. I'm curious if anyone has an idea on what other hidden deals allowed such a price as holdback and advertise fees are the only commonly spoken of negotiables that I have found.

There must be another hidden hyundai to dealer discount
  • w9cww9cw Member Posts: 888
In between jobs a couple of years ago, I sold cars for a local domestic new car dealer. I can assure you that there are all types of manufacturer to dealer discounts and incentives. Many consumers think that the "factory invoice" is what a dealer pays for the car. Actually, it's typically quite a bit under factory invoice. "Holdback" is a percentage of the invoice price. Plus, there's other incentives based upon the volume the dealer sells, special factory incentives and offers, and it goes on an on like this. Some dealers pass on advertising fees, others don't. Some pass on the holdback to the customers, others are never allowed to delve into the holdback. And, still others pass on all manufacturer's incentives to the customer.

However, remember that the dealer has certain level of fixed costs, and although all of us would like to buy a new car at what the dealer actually pays for the car, they have to make a reasonable profit to stay in business. They can't sell at a loss on each unit, and make it up with volume!

For example, if consumer's really knew what Nike's manufacturing costs are for most "tennis" shoes sold in the USA, they would be livid. Shoes that typically sell for $75 to $100 have typical manufacturing costs of $5 or less in China. In actuality, the car business works on very slim margins, except for the high-line premium brands.

I agree completely with all of your comments. I assume your dealer made enough to make him happy on your car. I'm just curious if what allowed your dealer to give you that deal is likely to be the same factors in place at the dealers here. In other words how much of your discount was universally available to Hyundai dealers and how much was unique to your dealer.
  • w9cww9cw Member Posts: 888
I have no way of knowing if it's dealer-specific, or universal.
  • sfosrisfosri Member Posts: 6
There is a dealer holdback on Hyundai Sonata this is 2.6 percent of the total invoice price(excluding dest charge).

There are alot of numbers being thrown around on the forum. Let me give you one specific example:

Hyundai LX with option package 3:
    MSRP including destination : $24,895.00
    Invoice Price inc. destination: $22,839.00

The dealer in Sacramento quoted me a price of: $22,100.00 including destination charges. This is before any rebates.

    So the following rebates apply:
    Financing Rebate : $1000
    Factory Rebate : $1000
Owner Loyalty : $1000 (on LX only)

So the net price I can expect would be $19,100.00 plus tax and title. (since I own an Hyundai Santa Fe).

The point I wanted to make is that this vehicle is being offered at almost $739.00 below INVOICE!!! So some dealers are able to offer this.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Odd... the hyundaiusa.com site shows the owner loyalty rebate of $1000 good for any '06 Sonata, not just the LX.
  • w9cww9cw Member Posts: 888
backy is correct - the $1,000 Loyalty Rebate applies to the GL, GLS, GLS V6, and LX.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
    Sounds like a good deal.
  • doylehargravesdoylehargraves Member Posts: 3
we looked at the LX today and loved it. my thought was to go to the dealer with an offer of what we'd pay:

    invoice 20.5 less rebates $3K plus destination charge 600 = 18100.

Or should i ask THEM for an offer first? seems like there are some good deals to be had out there. not sure if if I should offer 1st, or request an offer from them. thanks
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
My strategy (not to say it is the only one or the absolute correct one) but I offer them what I think is a fair price they can reasonably accept and one I an willing to pay for. I then stick with it I don't go up.

I "remind" them throughout the conversation that my wife would rather have an "X" car, I am not in a real hurry to buy this car today and am willing to wait, I've been talking to dealer "X" across town and I may want to check back with him etc. etc.

It's not longer the 80's you have the leverage. Get up walk round and start acting impatient. They will soon close the deal at the price you want.

I had been planning to buy a Honda Accord EX-L with Navigation and almost bought it a month go (paid $1000 advance and got it back because dealer could not find the Redondo Red by the date he promised).
At that point of time, I started looking at Sonata and today I brought home my new GLS 4 cyl for $16, 500 +TTL after rebates($500 customer rebate + $1000 HMFC rebate + $500 dealer rebate)...I have got 6 oil changes free also.
So, it costed me $18,200 OTD. :shades:
I'm very happy with the price and most importantly the car. The whole experience with the sales person and the dealer was good and very pleasant. BTW, I purchased it in Seattle. :)

Northern Virginia, for better or worse, was outside the circle of my inquiry. (Charlotte, Nashville, and Atlanta are all closer to my home than Alexandria.) I contacted Bristol, Roanoke, Charlottesville, Richmond area and dealers in between, since I travel to all those places from time to time.

I got an offer of 18,999 before rebates on a black gls 4cyl w/sunroof. What do you think? I am in central california. It is my first car buying experience so i thought i could use a little help. I will get an additional $500 off (4cyl rebate) and the $1000 Hyundai finance rebate so total before taxes is 17499. Thanks!
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
    Candra:

Yes this is a great offer! I figure invoice 17,896 sunroof 784 and delivery 600 fot a total of 19,280 and you are paying less. Don't let them add on a BS admin fee (or BS advertising fee) for 500 or so, if they do make sure they come down on the price that much more.

I have a 4cyl and love it. I wish I got the sunroof like you are doing and I paid about 300 more than you (not counting in the sun roof). I would jump on that price!!

Don't forget to tell them to activate the automatic door locking mechanism before you drive off the lot and don't let them charge you for it.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Same here I was going to buy an Accord and bouht a Sonata instead and I am glad I did. Hope all is well in the "Peoples' Republic of Seattle" :)

I just wanted to vent about my bad experiences at two dealerships, one in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn, NY. :(
Is there a dedicated board to do this?
If there isn't then that's ok as I'm creating a complaint website to honor their inattentiveness, dishonesty and illegal business practices.
This is probably why I may never buy a Hyundai nor recommend the brand.

Have yo previously bought a new car from a NYC dealer? I'm 60 miles away in CT and the reputation of NYC dealers in general is poor here.

Do those dealer you visited sell other brands? If so, they are probably as bad as you describe in selling those cars also.
  • halflabhalflab Member Posts: 10
This was my first purchase, but a friend came along because he knows the ins and outs of negotiating. He's very expereinced at this sort of thing. As a matter of fact, the floor manager was suprised that he knew so much.

One dealer sells Toyota and Infiniti, but the sales team and floor managers are completely different.
  • halflabhalflab Member Posts: 10
Kyfdx, thanks for the prompt reply. However, I did not purchase the vehicle.

Yeah... we used to have a forum for "dealership rants", but that sort of went by the wayside.. Since you were shopping for a Sonata, why don't you tell us what happened?

    No names or profanity-got it.
    Here it goes:
I don’t have extensive credit history so I knew that obtaining financing at a really good rate would be difficult but I was prepared for this.
I went to a Brooklyn dealership and I negotiated the price on a GLS V6 with sunroof. The dealership insisted that the rebate was taxable (price+delivery+TTL-Rebate=OTD) which I thought was a little off. I was ok with it though because I was comfortable with the price.
The finance guy told me that it would be difficult to get financing because of my lack of credit history (again, I was prepared for this). I was told to stop by the next day to pick up the car. Lo and behold the dealership could not find a lender. I was told to call the next day which I did. However, the salesperson and finance guy would not return my phone calls. This went on for another day and I finally went it to face a barrage of excuses. When I cancelled the deal, the manager, salesperson and finance guy got upset when I would not give them another chance.
The Manhattan dealership offered me a rate of 20.5% ! And that’s after the manager pulled some strings to get me a loan.
I gave a $3k down payment and was assured by two salesmen that the money would be refunded the same day if I declined the deal. They lied. I declined the deal but the dealership has not refunded my money and it’s been almost three weeks. I recently found out that retailers including car dealerships are supposed to post their refund policy as per NYS retail. This dealership has not posted a refund policy and is in clear violation of the law.
I’ve contacted my bank in order to receive a charge-back, I have submitted a complaint to Hyundai, and the BBB and I’m filing a complaint with the NYS Attorney General.

    Sorry for the lengthy post
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I think the dealer acted improperly; however, for the future, there is no reason you should need to post a $3000 down payment on a car before all terms are agreed to.
  • tobykunkletobykunkle Member Posts: 2
I have a question. If you by a hyundai at a dealer that is farther away from your house because that dealer gives you a better deal can you take it to the closes dealer to have it serviced under warranty. Thank you
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Certainly. I have done just that with my two Elantras.
  • halflabhalflab Member Posts: 10
The dealership asked for my credit card as I was reading over the contract. I signed the contract but declined the deal the next day because I did not want to pay over $10,000 in finance charges for a car that costs $21,000(after TTL).
  • mrenginearmrenginear Member Posts: 7
I was told by the dealer when I bought the car that I need to pay tax on the pre-rebate price, then apply the rebate to reduce how much I really owe. The reason was that they said the rebate is used to help pay for the car, and does not reduce the purchase price.

    Any other experieces?

After doing lots of research--including reading this forum--I just bought a GLS4 for $15561 (after $500 rebate and $1000 HMFC rebate) + TTL for an OTD price of $17012. This was at Howard Hyundai in Elmhurst. I got the $15561 quote through the internet and subsequent emails from the dealer. They told me that there would be no hidden or surprise charges when I went in to buy, and that turned out to be the case. I'm very happy with the car, the price, and the whole purchasing experience.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Wow, that is a great deal--nearly $1500 under invoice!

    Hi everyone,
I have been a silent lurker for a while and gotten a lot of useful info which helped me in shopping for a Hyundai Sonata LX. After a lot of shopping I called up fitzmall through their website. The guy there is offering me a basic LX model for $18792(includes $2000 rebate)+TTL .
Since I am in NJ and would have to drive down to MD, I am a little apprehensive. Please someone let me know if they shopped from them through online and how was theire experience. Also, please advice me on price. I hope when I drive down 300 miles to get this car, I won't be taken for a ride (changing price, words etc)and disappointed.
I would be driving down this wkend.
    Thanks everyone again.

I'm in the EXACT same situation w/ Fitzmall. Sure hope you get feedback for the both of us. Nice thing is they're open Sunday's not like here in NJ. I'm ready to go too w/ good feedback.
  • boltguyboltguy Member Posts: 94
I've never bought from Fitzmall, but I've been there plenty of times and it seems like a really low pressure environment. I think they'll stick by their word as long as you make sure that your out the door price is the same as theirs before you go there in person. Their "rep" here in Md. is not one of a sneaky swindler but more of a no haggle price type place, take it or leave it. I've gotten a little better deal, a few hundred dollars at other places, but that involved much more haggling.
  • jmfreshourjmfreshour Member Posts: 57
A really good friend of mine just bought a Toyota Sienna from Fitzmall's Toyota dealership. Price paid was the exact internet price as posted on Fitzmall's website. No games, gimmicks, pressure, anything. He's very pleased with his purchase. We live in North Carolina, he has family in Maryland, so over the holidays he drove his car up and traded it in on the Sienna. Painless transaction. Good luck. I'll be buying a Sienna in the next couple of months due to our third child on the way, and I'm definitely going to be looking at Fitzmall.

Many (all?) of the dealerships are offering a
loyalty incentive of $1000. Does anyone know
the details of this? Do you have to currently
own a Hyundai? Any year/condition? How do they verify ownership?
  • tenpin288tenpin288 Member Posts: 804
Direct from the Hyundai USA website:

If you are currently a registered owner of a vehicle distributed by Hyundai Motor America, you can receive an additional $1,000 off a new 2006 Hyundai Sonata. This program is effective from January 04, 2006 through January 31, 2006

As long as you own any Hyundai that meets the above qulifications, you get the rebate. ;)

Ok here is my dilemma...I used to lease a Mercedes Benz C240 (2002) and turned it in last year. It was a nice car but it had a few issues nothing major since it was under warrenty.

I am torn between getting a 06 Sonata LX with option 3 for $19,100 after (3K in rebates) vs. a 2005 Mercedes Benz C230 with about 15K miles for $24,000. Both are comparable in terms of luxury features (Power Seats, Leather, CD changer etc). The MB is under warranty for 50K/4years bumper to bumper.

The positives for the Mercedes Benz is its resale value and the luxury brand name. The positives for the Sonata LX is the fact its a 2006 brand new vehicle.

Anyone else have any comments on my dilemma?
  • blnewtoblnewto Member Posts: 146
I think the main question I'd ask is the condition of the Benz. Do you know the previous owner, and if not, I'd be sure to have the care thoroughly examined by someone without an interest in the car. Since it's got a warranty that makes it an easier decision. 15,000 miles on a Benz is nothing really, so all else being equal I'd opt for the Benz (as long as it has the room you need, I doubt it's got the rear seat room of the Sonata, but I've not checked that particular Benz model).
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Is the 50K/4year warranty from the date you may purchase it, or is it from the date it was first bought by someone else?

How long do you plan to keep the car (resale issue). What are the maintenance costs (non-warranty) for the Benz vs the Sonata?

Is it important to you to hope to impress people based on the type of car you drive?

How important is an up-front $5K savings (time value of money) to you?

These are question you must decide if you have a dilemma about which car to buy.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
And... which car do you like driving better? Does one of them put a bigger grin on your face than the other? Does the Merc drive $5k better than the Sonata?
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
Well, yourfirst mistake was giving them 3000 dollars.
In 35 years of buying new cars, the largest down
payment I have given is 200 dollars, and that includes
the two I ordered. One I cancelled, after waiting
8 weeks, lost the 200 bucks, but got a 500 dollar
better deal elswhere, so no big deal. Good luck!
  • sfosrisfosri Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the feedback. Well the Warrenty for the Mercedes Benz is transferable and its for 50K miles or 4 years which ever comes first. The 15K is included in the 50K miles for Warrenty purposes.

I like the interior of the Mercedes better, the quality and finish seems to be better than the Sonata. Also when I had a MB C240 I got hit from behind and not even a scratch on the car, but the guy who hit me who had a PT Cruiser had a lot of damage to his front end.

I guess its all a matter of tossing a coin at this point :)

    Thanks
    S
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
FYI, the Hyundai warranty is transferrable for 5 years/60k also. For about another $1000 you could extend it to 10 years/100k miles bumper-to-bumper, transferrable.

Another thing to consider if you plan on keeping the car past the warranty, or if the Mercedes dealer is not close to you: the reliability of the Mercedes C-class is much worse than average according to Consumer Reports. The Sonata's reliability is much better than average, but that is based on the previous-generation Sonata.

    Have fun tossing that coin!

I just purchased my first car! I got a Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 (silver).

I got it for $18,557.30 out the door. That includes 2 $1,000 rebates, the window etch fee, dealer doc fees, DMV fees, etc.

The invoice price for this vehicle is 19231, so I got it for $675 under invoice INCLUDING ALL TAXES AND FEES! If I back out the taxes and the dmv fees and the window etch fee and the dealer doc fees, my price was $2,431 under invoice.

Thanks to everyone on this site who helped me out!

Sounds like a great deal, you beat our OTD deal by about 1300, and I'm very happy with the deal we got. So far a fantastic vehicle, hope you have a happy time w/ yours too :)

Any idea if Hyundai is going to extend/change the rebates at the end of the month?
