I am planning to buy a new Hyundai Sonata GLS. I have some questions that I'd like to get opinions here. Some of them could be naive, but I can't find answers from web, so I would appreciate any hints.

*. if I buy a car from dealer A, can I let dealer B do maintainences or repairs without charge? Assume the repairs are within warranty. I am asking this because I wonder if I can buy a car from a dealer far-away, while let closeby dealer do the maintainence.

*. for Hyundai's warranties listed on their website (link below), except the protection plan, do the others all apply to Sonata'06 or 07?
    http://www.hyundaiusa.com/global/warranty/warranty.aspx

*. I notice someone here got the education rebate as a new graduate. I am also a new graduate, where I can find the information to decide whether or not I qualify?

*. 2007 Sonata GLS is around $1000 cheaper than its 2006 model on MSRP (around $800 on invoice). That sounds a bit strange to me: who will still buy a 2006 model?

    Any hints are appreciated!

The base '06 GLS is better equipped than the base '07 GLS. To compare apples to apples, you need to price the '07 GLS with the "Option Group 02", which is $500 MSRP. (note also that option group 02 includes Driver Side Power Seats while the base '06 does not)

'07 GLS with Option Group 02
    MSRP: $19,395
    Invoice: $18,158
    TMV: $19,000
No Current Rebate on the 4cyl model

    '06 GLS Base
    MSRP: $19,995
    Invoice: $18,496
    TMV: $18,783
    After Rebate TMV: $17,283

Additionaly, you can get an even better deal on the '06's b/c of the dealer incentive. eg, I got mine for $15,800.

    Good post. Good price.

I'm awaiting a certain color GLS '07...the local dealer said he believed that there would be a rebate, but knew not had much.

Another poster here indicated that it was $1,000.

    We'll see.

Just picked up my base LX that already had an aftermarket moonroof installed. LX's very scarce in these parts... Bought it on the 29th for $18,500 + TTL. Very good price, esp since the aftermarket moonroofs are usually over $1000. (this one is top of the line, inside slide, tilt up vent, 1-touch open, etc.)
The Base stereo was more than enough for us....
Enjoying the car, the Deepwater blue color is just gorgeous on this vehicle....

    A few answers:

    * You can have your Sonata serviced anywhere you choose--you can even do the maintenance yourself. Just be sure to keep a log of all maintenance, and keep receipts of parts you purchase. Also be sure any parts and fluids comply with Hyundai's specs.

    * The warranty info on Hyundai's web site should apply to the Sonata, except where it talks about old provisions. But you can always ask the dealer to show you the warranty book for the Sonata if you want to be sure.

    * Your dealer should be able to tell you if you qualify for the education rebate.

    * Comparably equipped, there is little difference in price between the 2006 GLS I4 and 2007 GLS. What Hyundai did is make some features that were standard on the 2006 GLS optional on the 2007 models. So the base 2007 GLS is more like the 2006 GL. For example, fog lamps, floor mats, faux wood grain or carbon fiber trim, trip computer, alloys, and a few other things are now extra-cost options. The good news is that getting a power driver's seat is much cheaper to do on the 2007 GLS, as it is part of a $500 options package.

There's a lot of talk in Canada on buying cars in the US. To answer your questions :
    - Yes I'm sure I can import a car from the US. If it was built in the US or Mexico there's no duty to pay (normaly a 6.1% fee is applicable).
    - Any of the previously mentionned states will do since I won't pay the taxes because the vehicule is sent directly to Canada and I'll pay the canadian taxes.
    - The Hyundai warranty is good anywhere in North America. :) I checked.
    - For your reference to the "canadian peso", I won't comment... the current exchange rate is $1US = $1,115CAN

The net difference between the GLS V6 here and in Canada is about $7'000

I still need help if someone can answer the questions from my previous post.

I also looked into purchasing a vehicle in the us to bring into canada. You will come out ahead if you have cash. If you are financing the vehicle you will find you wont save as much as you had hoped. The financing in canada is a great deal. If you have cash it is the only way to go. I paid 29,200 for my gls premium. If I paid cash I would have paid 26,200. This equates to 23,575 us dollars. For me my location in Canada and the location of the closest dealer in the us would have involved a hotel and at least 2 days of my time. Plus fuel both ways. For me the 2000 us I would have saved was not worth the hassle. If you are closer it may be to your advantage. The only other concern is if you have any issues with the car after purchasing. If you have a good relationship with the dealer you bought the car from it could save you big in the future. Best of luck let us know what you do.

miamixt, my Sonata is an '05. I leave the headlights on, in effect giving me DRL. When I remove the key and open the door ALL the lights turn off. When I get back in the car, the parking light turn on when the key is put in the ignition and the headlights turn on after starting the car.

Yes, this feature isn't quite DRL but it does the same thing. Plus, I don't have to remember to turn on the headlights when it is raining. ;)
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Yes, of course. But do you think this will fool the Royal Mounted Police, or the Canadian DMV? (Department of Moose & Vehicles.)

Plus between me and you, that does put a strain on the Battery. Same with starting the Car with the A/C on.

And there's another thing about importing the U.S. Sonata to Canada. The Warranty is only 5 years up there. And U.S. Hyundai Dealers are wise to this, especially in the States the original poster named :)

I am looking for GLS V6 AT(w/o options) in the Central New Jersey area. Read all messages since May 1st and concluded I should be able to do:
    MSRP $20,895, Invoice 19,231, Negotiated Sale Price of 17,300 resulting in $16,672 OTD. (17300 + 600 dest + 20 Title + 174 4yr reg + 1074 NJ 6% Tax - 2500 rebates = 16672)

What do you think? Any suggestions on dealers?
  • bobadbobad Member Posts: 1,587
I think $16700 OTD is going to be very hard to get. Good luck.
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
Have you tried Brad Benson? He is all over the radio advertising 30% off...someone on the board said that the cars come with a lot of dealer options. But even if a 20K car is loaded with 2K of options that would come to 22K. And with 30% off the cost would still be only 15.4K

Probably can assume the rebate is comprehended in the 30% off advertising. Don't know for sure, though.

I am on the verge of purchasing an 02 sonata. It has 93200 miles, it is a V6 and priced at $7222. I have test drove it and checked it over, the miles are all highway and the vehicle has only had 1 owner, the carfax is clean and so is the car. I really like it and have heard a lot of good about Hyundai lately. The thing is, that it does have high mileage, so I was looking for some feedback from any experienced Hyundai owners. All the feedback I have read on these cars has been great, but they are all on new purchases with low to no miles. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You didn't give many details about the car, e.g. trim level and features, or where you are buying it, e.g. private party or dealer. But the price seems high. Edmunds' TMV in my area (Twin Cities) for a 2002 Sonata GLS V6 with automatic with that many miles in clean condition is $5200 private party, $6500 dealer.

Have you had the car checked thoroughly by a mechanic? It will cost a few bucks but they can spot problems you may have missed. Since the car has had only one owner, have you seen the service records to make sure it's been serviced regularly (including the 90k service which is a fairly big one)?
  • stimpy727stimpy727 Member Posts: 2
Thanks for replying. It is just a basic model, sunroof, cd player, ABS, nothing super. My brother who is a mechanic came with me and he seemed to think it was a good buy. The price listed in my area is actually more than what they are offering it for. But as far as srevice records, I am going to now ask the dealership about that because it is something I haven't even thought of and my brother had mentioned a similar question. Thanks!!!
  • bobadbobad Member Posts: 1,587
The seems a little high, but keep in mind most resale estimates such as Edmunds are for selling price,(wholesale) not the buying price (retail).

Having said that, a friend bought an 02 with ~70,000 on it, and racked up ~145,000 before he sold it. He said it was one of the smartest buys he ever made. Problem is, I have no idea what he paid for it.

I guess it was only ~2-3 years old when he bought it, so I'm sure it was in the $8-$10K range.

    Misinformations... again!
    1. Installing daylight running lights cost next to nothing.
    2. Canadian warranty is BETTER than US's.
    Canada : 5 years 100 000 motor group
    5 years 100 000 Bumper to bumper
    USA : 10 years 100 000 motor group
    5 year 60 000 Bumper to bumper
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
I'd go for the 10 Year USA Warranty over the 5 Year Canadian warranty any day, but that's just me?. When you drive to the USA for service after your 5 years has expired with your Canadian Plates, do you really think the Dealer will just wink at you, and continue to service your Car under Warranty. You act like you are the only Canadian who has thought of this scheme. In any case, let us know what you decide to do!

I just bought a GLS-V6 on(6-25) --pearl white w/ sunroof at global auto in N. Plainfield OTD price $18750 and that was with N.Y. sales tax. So if you can do b/w 17 - 17,500 OTD you got a good deal for that area if you ask me.good luck
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
...keep in mind most resale estimates such as Edmunds are for selling price,(wholesale) not the buying price (retail).

Actually, Edmunds provides three different "TMV" prices: trade-in, private party sale, and dealer (retail) sale.

a so called "good" deal is 19600 OTD for a Sonata GLS v6 + sunroof. Don't know why, dealers in Dallas ask much more than others in other state. In OH, a good deal is about 17800 OTD for GLS v6+sunroof+5cd exchanger. Anyone know how to find a good deal in Dallas, TX area and surrounding. Thanks so much!

Was looking to buy an LX in the Omaha area but seems that in the past few days the price has been going UP---so I passed. My 02 Elantra has only 35000mi and a year full warranty left. I don't NEED a new car but thought I wanted one. So I decided to gamble that they will want to sell them worse when I really NEED one. Besides, gas is still going up and my MT4cyl does me well--and I still like the car!!

Brad Benson dealers are a bunch of crooks.. I went there to check out a GLS V6 Sonata, they started off the price at 24495 (MSRP was 21495) and then they started offering 20% off then increased it to 30% off (like as if i didnt know they had that deal on their website) ... but they would not cut to the point to work with me for the OTD price... they were just beating around the bush and wanted me to buy the car there and then. And I dont remember them offering any extra dealer options..they were offering the standard options, and thats about it.

When i asked them why they started off the price at 24495, they were talking about some market price or some crap... and i knew they were lying cause of all the deals i saw people in this forum were getting and no one's dealer started the price at $3000 above the msrp tag.

Id rather have the dealer start with the proper starting price and then start taking into account the official rebates and dealer incentives than this 30% off nonsense.

Have you checked with Freeman Hyundai in Irving? Have read posts from others where they have gotten good deals and notice on their website that they have posted prices on GLS models.
  • joedirtjoedirt Member Posts: 36
A good deal on a 4 cyclinder Sonata is around $14,500 plus TTL.

A good deal on a 6 cylinder GLS Sonata is around $16,600 plus TTL (I got one for less than 16k).

A good deal on a LX with the base LX package is around $18,000 plus TTL.

Don't let Stealerships BS you. What I listed are good deals.

If you get prices close to those, you will have gotten a good deal.

If not, you will have not.

You have to be resolute when negotiating a new car purchase. Be prepared to walk away at anytime. That's the only way you can win the game.

(P.S. Yes, Freeman Hyundai in Irvine is good. So is Randall Noe Hyundai).

There has been a lot of discussion on the $2,000 dealer incentive on 2006 models but does anyone know what the factory to dealer incentives are on the 2007 Limited edition? I was given a quote of $23,227 + TTL which is invoice with the 08 upggrade package (6cd, sunroof). I know I should knock $1,000 off for the rebate but should I be asking for more with any applicable dealer incentives? I am looking in eastern PA and Central NJ.

A base LX is w/o roof & CD changer? Very hard to locate in my area. How much with roof & CD upgrade?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The rebates changed today. So far they haven't been posted at hyundaiusa.com. That usually takes a day or so.

Add on approx $1300.....agree the base LX is hard to find now - 2006 stocks shrinking fast.

    Hi car_man,

I want to lease a 2006 Sonata. The salesman can give me 2500CAD discount on the MSRP $24,695. And he seems to use leasing rate 4.01%. Could you please tell me if this is a good deal? I told him the rate is too high, but he insisted that the rate cannot be changed by Dealer. The leasing is 5 years, 20000KM/year. And he said that I should buy an insurance from either Dealer or Hyundai which is to secure when I return the car five years later and it has some damage such as surface, painting etc. People who lease cars usually purchase this or not?

A lot of question...sorry, this is the first time I buy a new car.

    Thanks!

    First off...the MSRP for a 2006 Sonata GLS Auto 2.4L is $19995.

Check how the salesman came up with the $24,695 figure. Seems he just may be a little untruthful.

If you can't get a fairly loaded GLS V6 for less than 17k, you're getting hosed.

If you can't get a completely loaded GLS V6 for less than 17.5, you're getting hosed.

----Are you talking about Out-The-Door which includes tax, title, and all fees? If it is, you're pretty lucky to get a price that low from wherever you live. The lowest out the door price I got so far is somewhere below $18,000 on the 06 Sonata GLS with NO options.
  • joedirtjoedirt Member Posts: 36
    No, I'm talking before TTL.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
By chance are you talking about the GL model with the 5 speed manual on the 4 cylinder model?. Wanted to make sure since I didn't see it listed.
  • vhreb123vhreb123 Member Posts: 83
Oh, in that case never mind. By the way, does the price range of somewhere in $17,000 out the door sound good on the 06 GLS Sonata GLS with no options? I hope to see that it will get even lower with my holdback, incentives, and factory to buyer rebates knowledge sometime this month.
  • joedirtjoedirt Member Posts: 36
For those of you in Canada, if you can resolve the import issues (can you?) easily, you're FAR better off buying a Sonata in the U.S. because of the extraordinarily weak U.S. Dollar at this point in time.

I believe the exchange rate is 1 USD = 1.07 CAN
  • ericmatericmat Member Posts: 4
Yes the import issue CAN be resolved relatively easily (no duty, US warranty applicable in CAN, inspection for DRL, paying CAN taxes, etc). I read a lot on this lately and there's no problem in importing a Sonata if you follow the rules... not much harder than filling a tax report ;)

I expect to save a total of $7000-$7500CAD . If everything goes as expected, I'll offer an AutoImport service in Quebec in the following weeks...

    Current exchange rate : 1USD = 1.10CAN

A few years ago it was the other way around. Americans were buying Canadian cars like crazy 'cause of the poor CAN exchange rate at the time.

(sorry for my English! It isn't my primary language and I don't have much opportunity to practice up here!)

You can bargain as you would for any other brands. Several hundred bucks below invoice price before rebates can be easily got.

Looking to buy an '06 Sonata LX in the middle-Eastern Iowa area. Local dealer (Lujack) is the only Hyundai dealer in 50 miles, and they are a "no haggle" dealership. MSRP is $22395, dealer discount is $1234, Hyundai rebate (from their website) is $2500. Listed price is now $18661. Is there a factory to dealer incentive on top of this? Where can I find that in writing? I don't see it at Hyundai's website. Anyone who can help - please advise. Thanks!
  • yeaglewyeaglew Member Posts: 3
I guess $2500 rebate is for cash purchase and it is given by Hyundai, not by Dealer itself, right?
  • yeaglewyeaglew Member Posts: 3
All the prices are Canadian dollar based. Sorry for confusing.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Your best bet may be to get quotes from the Internet sales managers from dealers in nearby cities like Des Moines, Madison, and even the Twin Cities, Milwaukee, or Chicago for bargaining leverage. But if the dealership is truly a "no haggle" dealer, they will probably stick to their guns.

You won't find any factory-to-dealer incentives published anywhere where they are easy for buyers to find. The dealers don't want you to know about them.
  • bobadbobad Member Posts: 1,587
By the way, does the price range of somewhere in $17,000 out the door sound good on the 06 GLS Sonata GLS with no options?

That's a great price. One of the lowest I've heard so far! Better jump on it right away!

The "no options" part is pretty misleading isn't it? In reality, it's a deluxe package, very good quality, no major drawbacks at all, and at a remarkable price.
  • ninaspadesninaspades Member Posts: 2
Thanks, Backy. One post mentioned printing out the factory-to-dealer incentive and showing it to the dealer, I just couldn't find where it was. I have done some pretty through searching and have found nothing in print. They are pretty serious about their no haggle policy. I have checked other dealerships nearby, but no one seems to have much 06 inventory left. I never thought about going as far as Des Moines or Chicago. Maybe I'll give that a try. Thanks!
