See post 2392 & click the link. (It's a factory to dealer incentive, not part of holdback.)
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Yes, I had read that paragraph before. But even when you go to the AIADA web site, there is no mention of this news.:confuse: Can we confirm the accuracy of this article anywhere else?. And like you said it's Factory to Dealer, not Consumer.

What we do know however, is the Hyundai Sonata V6 is a big bargain :)

And like you said it's Factory to Dealer, not Consumer

When reading several websites and magazines dealing with new car buying they all say that both holdback and factory to dealer incentives should be used when negotiating a cars price.

I think the entire purpose of using these is to get the dealers true cost of the car (or true invoice) and make them an offer with a resonable amount of profit, which typically is 3-5%. Most dealerships, from what I have read, are making about $500 on new cars unless of course they have people who come in and use MSRP to wager their deals.

Now, I know this a Kia example, but about a month ago I went to the Kia Dealership and they still had BRAND NEW 05 optimas with the V6 engine and they had them slashed down to 12,000 plus TTL. The stickers on them were over 20k MSRP. Heck, the dealership here about 2 weeks ago finally got rid of their remaining 05 Elantras (and they had several loaded with leather) and 05 Santa Fe's, that were still brand spanking NEW.

Factory to dealer means it cost the dealer less. It's just like lowering the invoice price. This information should be used in price negotiations...the dealer won't voluntarily give it up.

The site from theautochannel.com was off the Hyundai Link on the right column. It lists a lot of news about Hyundai, just as it does for other brands you may check. It had the May Hyundai sales numbers on June 1, a few days before one of the Hyundai sites announced the numbers.

Not long ago a couple people posted about great prices from a dealership in (I think) Ohio. The salesman would even pick up the customer at the airport. One of the post provided a link to the dealer's website.

I can't find that info now. Can anyone supply help in locating this?
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
I found this with the search feature, but I'm not sure it is what you are looking for. Could I ask a question though. Should Edmunds TMV reflect these huge $2000 Dealer to Factory incentives we have talked about today?.

The TMVs don't include that kind of information. But you could always suggest that they do it--it would be very helpful to buyers.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Thanks Miamixt. But it wasn't Fitzmall I was looking for. It was something more recently posted and seemed to offer even better prices than Fitzmall. Memory is coming back (I think)...there were 1 or 2 guys from FL, someone from PA and I don't know how many others who had purchased cars sitting on the lot waiting to be picked up. A FL guy posted that one was his and one was for his friend in PA. Darn, just can't remember any additional info.

Thanks for trying to help. :)

Maybe the TMV will reflect the factory to dealer incentives after a passage of time. But, it would be nice for buyers to about a bargaining chip when it becomes available. These types of incentives aren't widely advertised and by the time they filter into the TMV reports they could be discontinued.

Stellaw, can you tell me which dealer in Houston sold you a loaded LX for $18771?

The lowest figure I've been able to get from a dealer is $19,700 for an in-stock vehicle, (with limited colors available) with $19,400 for a demo.

And how many additional fees (in addition to TT&L) did they add?
  • mojo_lomojo_lo Member Posts: 18
bhmr, i searched this thread for "airport", and Fitzmall was the only hit. maybe in another thread?
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
    Thanks alot.

A friend is interested in the Azera, so your info is all the better.

Has anyone purchased a 06 Sonata GLS 4 cylinder in the south such as Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, and even Florida? If so, can someone claim to have gotten the absolute best price of all that lives about 300 miles of Birmingham.

Oh, and since I live in Alabama, does anyone know if states charge you with some out of state fee if you don't live there and buy a car there? :confuse:

I am thinking of buying a 2006 lx considering the 2500 rebate, but I am having a hard time finding one in silver without the sunroof. I realize the 2007's will be on the lots shortly and they currently have a 1000 rebate. Does anyone have an idea as to whether the 2007's will get the 2500 rebate in the near future, especially considering the pending yearly summer car price wars? What is Hyundai's history considering rebates on new model years? thanks all.
  • vhreb123vhreb123 Member Posts: 83
I am sure I will buy a Sonata between now and next month. The problem is I don't know if I should wait till next month when the price is lower (because of more 07's) or this month when I know there will be at least a $1500 rebate. It seems that everybody that replied to the rebates messages are sure that there will be rebates but don't know how much. The problem with that is the rebates could be lower. Does anyone remember last year's rebates? If so, were they higher or lower at around the same time this year after July 4? And also, should I consider buying this month or wait till next month? :confuse: (The $18,600 out the door price for a 06 Sonata GLS 4 cylinder is still a bit high for me)
  • vhreb123vhreb123 Member Posts: 83
The more I think about rebates, the more I don't think that the rebate should be included in a out the door price. If Hyundai never offered the $1,500 rebate, my out the door price of about $18,600 would be around $20,100! I really don't think it makes much sense for a 06 Sonata GLS (that doesn't come with ANY options) cost around $20,000 at this time of the year when the 07's have about the same price. The out the door price right now should be more like mid $17,000 or much less.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Looking at the rebate picture from a year ago doesn't help much because the Sonata was still pretty new then. Rebates started ramping up late in 2005 and stayed at a high level into 2006. Any guesses on what will happen to rebates on the Sonata is pure speculation. The odds are that Hyundai will keep sizable rebates on the car because they are trying to buy market share in a very tough market, but who knows?

There are some general rules of thumb about rebates that I have observed however:

    * Rebates tend to be highest on the outgoing models once the new models have hit the lots. We are in that situation now with the Sonata. There are still 2006s on the lots, and the 2007s are rolling in.
    * The 2007s aren't much different than the 2006s. Thus there is little justification for Hyundai to stay away from rebates on the 2007s once the 2006s are gone.
    * Rebates tend to peak late in the year (year-end closeouts) and early in the year, January-March. There's variations in that behavior, but that is what I have observed over the past several years.

What Hyundai will do with the rebates on the 2007 GLS vs. the V6 models is a big question mark. Will they keep the V6 rebates higher, or start pushing the I4 models more? It's all a big game. It can't be predicable, or the automakers would lose one of the advantages of rebates: unpredictability.
  • vhreb123vhreb123 Member Posts: 83
Backy, what I meant in asking if the rebates were higher/lower at this time of the year is when last year the 05 model was coming to an end and the 06 started coming out. I am assuming that last year the 05 had some sort of rebate around now and ends around July. The question is did the rebate become higher of lower after the rebate ends in July such as the one now when it ends on July 4.

I am looking back at a price sheet my dealer gave me last Saturday which broke down the price (I posted a message that day which has all the numbers). I can safely say that it was all BS. First of all, the salesman told me that they were having a SALES day and were selling invoice that day and that day only. He continued on and told me that his manager made the decision in the morning so the price was extra low.

This is everything on the sheet for out the door on a 06 Sonata GLS 4 cylinder with NO extra options

    Retail Value-19995
    Savings-999
    Sale Price-18996
    Processing Fee-399

    Total Purchase Price- 19395.00
    SALES TAX(Not STATE TAX)- 727.31
    Title Fee- + 16.50
    ________
    Net Sales Price- 20138.81
    Factory Rebate- - 1500.00
    ---------
    Balance Remaining- 18,638.81

*Note that the sales tax and state tax is probably different because tax in Alabama is 9%. Otherwise I don't know why tax is $727.31

    1. First of all the invoice price isn't $18,996 it is $18,496 according to Edmunds.

    2. Another thing they said was $18,638.81 was the lowest they can go (another lie) but I found out about HOLDBACK which is 2% for Hyundai so the price should be looking more like $18,126.08.

*The salesman even had the nerve to tell me that he wasn't lying of how the price he offered me was the absolute lowest and also he wasn't the type of salesman you hear on the internet. He even went on about how Toyota next door were the liars.

    3. Take out the ridiculous processing fee (the salesman insisted it has to be added because they had to pay it) and it comes down to $17,727.08

4.Add the tax and title and total is $18,470.89

    5. Subtract the rebate and the grand total is........
    $16970.89

    6. Even if I absolutly have to pay the processing fee the total is still a $1,000 difference!!

*The dealership I went to was so confident in their price that they guaranteed that it was the lowest I will find. However, they are wrong yet again because a different dealer gave me a better price of $18,400 out the door.

Does all of this sound correct? Did anyone have similar experiences? What is the price range that most people have been paying on a 06 Sonata GLS 4 cylinder? I am sure there are plently of people who bought this car for thousands less.
  • brasbras Member Posts: 3
Try doing a search on ebay. There is a dealer in Ohio with great deals. I think their name is Great Lakes Hyundai. I was going to purchase from them but found a local dealer who would - very reluctantly - match their price Got a 06 lx sonota for 20k plus about 1.6k ttl or 21.6 otd. LX is loaded with sunroof and preimum sound. I love it. THe dealer tried to slip in all sort of additionsl costs and lied like a rug (I'm loseing two thousand on this deal!) but finally matched the Ohio price. I owe a lot to this forum... thanks guys. :)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I am trying to explain to you, last year was different. The '06 Sonata came out early in 2005, so by this time the '05s were pretty much gone and the big rebates hadn't kicked in yet on the all-new '06s. So I don't think you can directly compare the situation last year at this time to this year. And as I've also mentioned, rebates are designed to be unpredictable.
  • seriusblackseriusblack Member Posts: 7
I won't go over the invoice minus any applicable rebate if I were you. In this case that'll be 18,496 - 2500 = $15,996. Don't pay any of those so-called "fee". The dealership still have plenty ways to make money (3% holdback, $500 dealer cash for Sonata, $500 incentives per sonata, etc).

This friday (6/30) will be a good time to get a great deal ;)
  • vhreb123vhreb123 Member Posts: 83
whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a sec. seriousblack, are you saying that not only do dealerships get holdback, they also get a $500 dealer cash and on top of that they even get another $500 on incentive. First of all, what is the dealer cash you're talking about? And also what are the incentives?

*I really hope to purchase a Sonata between now and next month. I've been talking to other dealers and the lowest so far is $18,000 out the door. That dealer said he might even get me a better deal next month, it just depends on the manufacturer.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Actually the manufacturers to dealer incentive is presently $2,000 per Sonata. This should not be confused with the manufacturer to buyer rebate. You will have to negotiate with the dealer to get any part of that $2,000, the rebate should be automatically applied.

See post 2392 for a link to the article about this incentive to the dealer.
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
Very reluctantly? Mmmm, there's quite a few folks here who will say the price you paid was too high, like $1000-$1500 too much! Where did you buy your car? :confuse:
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
You're being kind to say the least. My loaded LX was $3K less than that $21.6K figure. Go figure? :)
  • domandoman Member Posts: 4
A local dealer quoted me a price of $19,360 out the door for the above with no options. Any comments on this deal?
  • seriusblackseriusblack Member Posts: 7
Excluding TTL, I'm guessing the sale price is around $18,300 (including $2500 rebate)? If that's the case, its a pretty good deal.
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
Hey, I was thinking of your deal when I wrote that response..... ;) Was trying to be kind.....
  • domandoman Member Posts: 4
That is the total price with rebate.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
    Canadian, am I correct? :)
  • domandoman Member Posts: 4
Great Falls, Montana and we do not have a sales tax in Montana.
  • brasbras Member Posts: 3
:) Pu chased at Courtesy Hyundai in Tampa. Obviously not the best deal ever.... but it could have been mush worse. I'm happy with it - and that's all that matters.
  • mojo_lomojo_lo Member Posts: 18
Just wondering. You guys who are getting the great deals - are you telling the dealers that you know about the $2000 Dealer incentive? Is it something that is fine to discuss?

Just spoke with a dealer over the phone, and mentioned the $2000 incentive and he denied knowing about, saying that his Hyundai rep never told him about it so he doesn't believe it actually exists.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Mojo, I think the salesman is being less than honest with you. Either that or he is terribly uninformed.

I suggest you make an offer of what you feel is a fair price. Feel free to let him know that your offer is based on the rebate, factory to dealer incentive, plus what you fee is a fair dealer discount. Tell him your offer includes all charges & fees to be paid to the dealer and that you will only add tax and other state fees paid to the state. If you feel it necessary, print the article announcing the factory to dealer incentive. If he then denies it, you'll know what kind of person you're dealing with. Don't be afraid to travel to buy a car. I flew from CT to FL and saved a net of $1500 after travel expenses. The dealership I did NOT buy from in CT is more than happy to service my car.
  • mojo_lomojo_lo Member Posts: 18
bhmr59, i like your approach. it's very matter of fact and will hopefully cut all the BS out. i'll let ya know how it goes. this is day 1 for me as I sent out most internet quote requests yesterday and a few today. most dealerships haven't given me a quote yet so my hopes are still high!

I am interested in buying Ebony black LX V6. It has 480 miles already on it (its not a demo car, seems it was transported from some other dealership). Out of the door offer is 20900$.
It doesnt have a sunroof but has a 6 CD player.
Is this a good deal? I told them I was willing to pay 19000$. Gave them my number and asked them to call me back.
Havent heard from them as yet. What to do?
  • strunzostrunzo Member Posts: 2
Is there a simple way to tell an LX from a GLS and what is a resonable price to pay for an LX?

    Thanks in Advance

  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Leather seats among other things. But the seats are the most easily noticed differences.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Also many GLSes have 16" wheels (plastic covers or alloys) vs. five-spoke 17-inchers on the LX.
  • mojo_lomojo_lo Member Posts: 18
sonata_v6_fan, please let the board know what state you are in and what the price is before TTL. deals will vary by market and tax varies greatly as well. i'm sure people who have bought the LX would be able to better help then.

they may not call you back so shop around if possible.
  • strunzostrunzo Member Posts: 2
That's what I thought but I have seen LX's listed with cloth seats. Must be a mistake. Thanks for the info.

In the Seattle area on May 6th:MSRP $21495 less $2500 rebate, less $500 loyalty rebate, less $2495 dealer discount,so price was $16000 plus tax and license.I GOT A GOOD DEAL!!!
  • linktrakkerlinktrakker Member Posts: 2
I dont know if this is correct, but when I went to the dealer the MSRP written on the side of the car (GLS V6) was 21495 but the dealer started the price at 24495 and started discounting from there... any comments on this? When i asked him for a quote so i could consider it he insisted i buy it that same day and when i refused he was just beating around the bush and not quoting me a price. Is this how all dealers are?

Do any of you think the 2.5k rebate will still be offered after july 4th?
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
....I dont know if this is correct, but when I went to the dealer the MSRP written on the side of the car (GLS V6) was 21495 but the dealer started the price at 24495....

If it doesn't come with a couple of gold bars you might want to find another dealer.

....Do any of you think the 2.5k rebate will still be offered after july 4th?....

Depends upon overall inventory of '06's....but, inasmuch as it has already been mentionerd that there is a $1000 rebate on the '07's seems pretty logical that the rebates on the '06 will be reinstituted shortly after the fourth.
  • bobadbobad Member Posts: 1,587
$16000 plus tax and license.I GOT A GOOD DEAL!!!

COngratulations! That's as good as it gets! Got mine for $16500 with almost no haggling, and I'm delighted.
  • mojo_lomojo_lo Member Posts: 18
GLS 4cyl in San Jose, CA

Paid $15,800 + Sales Tax + CA Registration with no additional fees. Only qualified for the $1,500 customer rebate and no other Hyundai customer discounts/incentives.

It was a struggle to get this price. Many dealers claimed there was no Factory to Dealer Incentive...One dealer claimed there was only a $500 dealer incentive...One dealer claimed there was only a $1000 dealer incentive...They were losing money on the deal, etc., etc. Thanks to everyone on the board as I was well prepared! Also, every part of the negotiation process was by the book according to carbuyingtips.

I'm from Quebec (Happy Canada day everyone :) !!!) and would like to buy an Ebony black V6 GLS 2006 from a dealer located in one of theses states :
    - Maine (North)
    - Vermont (North)
    - New Hampshire (North)
    - New-York (Plattsburgh area)

Would you guys know of a good place where I could buy from (website link if possible please)and the target price I should look for?

The price difference for a new Sonata in the US vs Canada is nearly $10 000... Yea I know, it's completely insane!

Looking forward to give you my hard earned money ;)
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Are you sure you can?. Why not just pick a Tax free State?. Plus what about the Warranty. Of course I now know why you picked these States. And doesn't the price difference figure into the difference in Currency. I'm still trying to understand what a Canadian Peso is?. Let us know what you do!.
  • domandoman Member Posts: 4
I take it without the premium package means no sunroof and 6-disk cd player, just the standard features. I was quoted $19,340 out the door. We do not have a sales tax in Montana and that does not include licenseing. I have not recieved any replies as to how good this price is.
