Test drove a 2005 Tacoma Saturday; what a nice truck. I'm looking for a double cad, V6, auto. I don't want a 4 x4 and really don't have a need for a PreRunner. Of course the only way to get a double cab is in either the PreRunner or 4 x4 configuration! I actually like to lower my vehicles just a little bit; similar to the X-Runner. Does anyone know if the only difference in suspension components between a PreRunner and a standard truck are the springs and shocks? If that is the only difference, I could simply install a lowering kit (soon to be developed) from one of several aftermarket sources. Does anyone have the answer? I think Toyota really missed a market here by not offering the double cap in a standard suspension configuration. Thanks.

I have a 2004 DC Tundra and would like to know if I can just buy the Console unit and install it. Has anyone done it or know anything about it?

I purchased an'05 Taco. Did not want a lot of extra crap, so I got Access Cab, 4X4, 4 Cyl, with SR5 convenience package...........Like the truck a lot, but the large fog lamp holes in the bumper are ugly. Can I install factory fog lamps in the openings? Will they connect to existing wiring harness? Cost? Any ideas............. Cooch

I had discovered that Toyota SE regions was offering a EC mirror wtih Homelink as an accessory on the 05 Tacos. I ordered one from a Toyota dealer in Charlotte, and it is the Prius mirror! Started the mirror install this morning. Tried tapping the mirror mount up, as an earlier post suggested, but it didn't seem to want to move. I began applying pressure down on the mirror - not a lot, but steady, even pressure and the mirror released. The Prius mirror slid right on, then I ran the wires(including the radar detector wires) under the headliner as in the Toyota instructions for replacing the mirror, except I did not remove the overhead console, then down behind the A-pillar trim to the fuse box. The Homelink requires constant 12V power and the EC part of the mirror needs switched 12V. Works like a charm. Now I have temp & compass in the overhead console, an EC mirror and Homelink.

Has anyone installed an after-market moonroof in their 05 Tacoma? Which company installed yours? How much was it? And where was it manufactured?

Hi, I've got the same mirror from ebay and I don't have the wiring pinout. Can you tell me on the connector what each wire is. Thanks much in advance for your help!

I am planning on installing larger wheels and tires on my Tundra. Is there any hardware/software available which can support speedometer recalibration?
  • dust90dust90 Member Posts: 169
I assume you got the wiring harness & instead of pinout, you meant printout. Mine didn't come with a schematic, but the wire with the round connector with the hole in it is the ground wire. Of the other two connectors(both with spade ends), just touch the ground to your battery(neg post) & then each of the two spade connectors, one at a time to the positive post. When the little green light comes on at the bottom of the mirror, that is the autodimming wire and needs to be hooked to accessory power(power only when switch is on). The other wire is for the homelink and should be wired to be hot all the time. If you need further help, just Email me, as I don't check this forum every day. TEFye@aol.com Oh yeah, if the green light doesn't come on, the two buttons on the right side turn the autodimming on and off, so just press the on button while connecting each of the two spade connectors(one at a time). You may need a second set of hands!

I have purchased a 2005 Tundra, Access Cab, SR5,4WD The dealer is locating the color I would like. I have to talked to the finance rep, and he talked about "The Platnium Extended Warranty" .. Did not go over costs at this point as my vehicle as not arrived. This is my first Toyota truck purchase (I own two Corollas), do you think a extended warranty is a good idea, and if so, what do they run. Thank you for the information.
  • iljimiljim Member Posts: 2
Try taking your carseat or borrowing one and bring it to a dealer. They'll be more than happy to let you try it fitting it in an access cab.
  • garyandersgaryanders Member Posts: 39
I would not pay over $1200 for a warrranty. Deal with the finance dept as you would with the salesman. In otherwords, hammer them on price, they make their commission just like the salesman. The finance dept and the service dept are the most profitable depts in a dealership. Make sure the warranty will match your driving habits or the miles you will place on the vehicle.
With all the computer parts, sensors, and a/c costs and labor costs these days, I think it is a good idea to buy the warranty. Just study and think about what you are getting.

I own a 2000 Toyota Tacoma. It has front speaker wires but none for the rear. How do I add rear speaker wires so I can install a pair of speakers for the back? Thanks.

Does anyone know of a source for a faceplate that will allow you to replace the factory radio? I called Crutchfield and they apparently don't have anything yet. Here's a nifty picture of something, though...

I am buying a '05 Tacoma at the end of the month, and the dealers are pushing Diamond-Kote. Does anyone have any opinions on Diamond-Kote protection?
  • jillmcmjillmcm Member Posts: 2
Anybody out there have a Softopper retractable cover for their Tacoma? I am cringing at the price of a shell for the 2005. Also, anybody ever try those tents that set up right in your truck bed?

I have a 98 Taco with the 2.7 liter engine. I have been having trouble with my clutch due to oversize tires. The dealership here in NC says the tires are placing too much stress on the clutch. I was informed I could install a stage 2 clutch versus the factory clutch. Is this true?

    Thanks

Has anyone considered replacing the 400w inverter that is built into the bed on the TRD model Tacomas with something a bit more useful like a 1000 or 1200 watt unit? Just curious how things are wired up and if this is do-able...
  • nbtacomanbtacoma Member Posts: 15
    Hey Cooch,

I'm in the same situation as you...have you added the fog lamps yet or looked further into it?
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
I was wondering the same thing. I'm sure I could handle the wiring part. I'd like to also add a 2nd plug in the cab somewhere. I'm not sure why they put one in the bed and not in the cab. Does anybody know where the inverter is mounted on the truck?

I just bought a LCD Monitor for the kids to watch their DVD's. I was wondering if anyone has insight on removing the headliner?
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Almost all the interiors of Toyotas are held together by lots of compression clips. You just have to start pulling on stuff and it will pop loose. It seems kinda scary at first, but don't worry. Start with removing the plastic trim on the pillars that overlaps the headliner, then take apart the dome light lens and see if there's a screw or something holding the base of the light fixture up; take that loose, then check for screws in the overhead compartment. Look inside the sunglass holder part. If you don't see anything then it's probably held by clips. Just start pullin. Don't pull so hard that you put creases in the foam of the headliner.

I'm thinking about buying a few accessories for my 05 Taco. I was wondering if anybody has any individual pics of any of these 3 things installed on their Taco: Valor Exhaust Tip, Westin Tube Steps, or a Bed Shell?
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
I was wondering if anybody has put any small performance mods on thier 05 Taco? I just ordered a K&N air filter and oil filter. This shouldn't affect the warranty, right? Hopefully it will help the performance and MPG a little.
  • hvan3hvan3 Member Posts: 630
No, it wouldn't void the warranty. Just make sure you don't over spray the filter with the lubricant.

Hey, I just got my 02 extended cab Tundra this week and I need some advice. Where would you suggest I start look for chrome rocker panels, whips, tires, exhaust tips ect.. What would you suggest putting on this (gold) Tundra to make it stand out as a redneck truck? Thanks

Just bought a 05 Tacoma 2WD/DBL cab/V6 Long bed Auto with pack 8, but... want to add in some accessories to improve my truck, what is must have addins for a newbie? ex. hood protector, tube step, mud flaps? Thanks,
  • aaa123aaa123 Member Posts: 10
I too plan to get this same exact package and tube steps would be my first consideration. Just curious how much you paid for yours (excluding tax, fee, etc...?) Thanks
  • smurfftacosmurfftaco Member Posts: 3
Well, I have an offer for 24,500 but I want the bed extender included. I have a couple of offers and am negotiating, but, the whole gas price situation is making me a little nervous. I figure to be getting the nerf bars, hood protector, snugtop?, bed mat, and front mud flaps-after market (easy installation). The bed extender looks pretty easy to install too, but after having to pay $50+ every time I go to the filling station, I am hoping I will be able to afford to drive my truck. :)
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
A must have is the bed mat. I also like the bed divider. I had to get my brother to help me install the divider. It's easier if you can put both sides together at the same time. The only bad thing is that the divider won't slide right off the track if you want to remove it. You have to take it apart to remove it.

Then I got some floor mats (not Toyota brand). They are custom molded to fit the floor of the truck. Real nice if you get dirty shoes.

    Floor Mats

I like the door sill protectors too. The dealer gave me all of my accessories for 10% over dealer cost, which is about 50% off on some items. I got the bed mat for $56 and the door sill protectors (double cab) for $19, and the bed divider for $196.

I just bought an 05 Tundra Double Cab (Natural White) last month. The first thing I did was have the windows tinted and added an alarm.

As of last week, I added a color keyed custom running board. Wow! What a BIG difference!! This custom running board is much nicer than the factory style found on the Limited edition. It's wider, stronger, and more sculptured . It sure adds an unbeatable functionality and attractive styling. The funny thing was.....Toyota does NOT sell color keyed running board for Tundra Double Cab and 05 Tacoma Double Cab as an accessory. It only comes factory installed as a Limited edition. Anyway, I'm glad I bought this custom color keyed running board. I highly recommend it!! If you guys are interested, send me an e-mail at marketbuy@gmail.com. I have the phone number, but I don't think I can post the phone number without getting in trouble with Edmunds policy. I paid $475 including custom painting and delivery. It sure make the truck look 10X better!!

My next project is adding a Flowmaster with K&N filter. After that, I"m adding a Lojack on my Tundra. After that, I'm adding an aftermarket moonroof.

Just curious, does the new 05 Tacoma double cab rear window roll down? The only reason why I bought the 05 Tundra DC was the rear window roll down feature.
  • hvan3hvan3 Member Posts: 630
As for the running board, if you own a double cab Tacoma or Tundra, DON"T get the tube step. It looks ODD.

Having the color keyed custom running board will surely grab a lot of attention. From a distance, having a color keyed custom running board is like having a custom aero kit on your truck. NICE!!

Are their any holes or brackets for mounting the lights in the cut outs in the bumper & any wiring harness that you can use? :confuse:

Is there anyway to upgrade to a 4WD on the SR5 2WD without getting a whole different truck? Might sound crazy or not worth it but just wondering, (is it possible w/o it costing to much or switching alltogether) might need the upgrade for the snow if moving is in our future. Thanks for your help! :confuse:
  • jnm1jnm1 Member Posts: 7
Any suggestions between Rhino liners or any spray on liners. If you have one is it worth the cost? Where to get them? Thanks! :)
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
It would be cheaper and less work to just trade it in for a 4wd. You would need to get a transfer case, front drive shafts, front hubs, modify the sheetmetal or floor of the cab to accomidate the transfer case, new rear drive shaft, probably have to raise the suspension (springs, shocks, etc), and other sundry changes. By the time you buy all of the parts and pay for the labor, would not be worth doing vs. trading in on a 4wd in the first place.

    Just my opinion...

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. The 05 Tacoma double cab rear window has a slide, but does not roll down as far a I have been told. The only thing about the tube step that I liked was that when you jump up and down on it there is no give, the whole truck moves with it, but with the running board, it seems like the board has a lot of give. :shades:

I've got a 2003 Tacoma Extracab with the most painfully uncomfortable seats I've ever encountered.....a sort of 60/40 semi, imitation bucket. What I wondering is: can I swap them for buckets out of a Forerunner? I've seen a few offered on E-bay that are offered as Tacoma/Forerunner seats. The rails look the same but can I actually bolt them into the same holes? Anyone out there ever done this?

Does anyone know where I can get fener flares for a 2005 tundra double cab? I need the ones that come on the limited that are very deep. My color is salsa res 3q3. Thanks in advance.
  • hvan3hvan3 Member Posts: 630
Either running boards (color keyed running board or step tube) will do the job. The non-step tube running boards have been around for a long time. I have not heard of the custom running board "giving" way when applying pressure on it. If you look at the old model Sequoia or the Tundra Limited, there is no "give" on the board. It's as straight as an arrow, sort of speak....

To me, it's more cosmetically "pleasing" to have the color keyed running board then the step tube. The step tube is toooo "red-neck" for me. LOL! I like to customize my truck with color keyed custom boards.

It's a matter of preference.... I get so many attention from the "other" truckers. hehe
