Just glancing it over, I'd say the primary advantage of the "Winchlock" that you found is that it directly locks the wheel assembly instead of just locking the winch. That also might be a bit of a disadvantage to some.
By locking the wheel directly, someone can't steal your wheel by simply cutting the winch cable, so the one you found is a good bit more secure. OTOH, it requires that you crawl a bit further under the vehicle to unlock the wheel when you need it.
I suppose choice depends on how badly you think someone will work to steal your wheel vs. how much work you want to do when changing a tire.
Just thought I'd throw my $.02 in regarding the spare tire lock. Rather than buy anything I simply used an old chain and a padlock that I had in the garage. The chain itself is maybe 3 feet long and has the plastic sleeve on it, the kind of chain used for securing a bicycle.
Anyway, I wrapped it around the tire and the frame and it was the perfect length to padlock together at the ends. The plastic sleeve prevents any rattling.
Drop in liners appear to be the most durable product out there except for their tendency to mar the paint underneath. Well I found www.paintsaver.net and they offer a waterproof pad that goes between the drop in liner and the bed of your truck. Now it appears we have the best of both worlds with the durability of the drop in liner and the paint saving ability of a bed rug or bed mat.
I tried to use my old 03 alarm but it doesn't fit. If you installed it yourself, can you tell me the price you paid for it and where?
Also, while looking behind the middle black accessory cover on left side of wheel, I found a wire set pushed into one without any indication what it is for. It isn't plugged into anything..just sitting there waiting for something to be installed...any ideas? This is on a 4x4 access cab. Thanks.
My brother purchased and 04' extra cab Tacoma last fall. A TRD manual trans. model. It's lifted 6 in. with weld rims and swamper tires. He installed a super charger. Even with the extra load of rims and tires (and occasionally a camper) the super charger makes the truck fly hard core! It sounds like a jet whizzing by. If you're looking for more power, definately look into getting a super charger. Good Luck!
I hear it is possible to put a 350 in my year of truck and i would like to do it. does anyone here have any comments or suggestions on doing this. any info on the things to do and not do would be great.
Looking for info on connecting the parking lights as running lights on my 06 Tacoma. Didn't get this option with the vehicle, but I would think it can be done
The TRD Sport seat covers look great if you have the grey interior, but the black portion in the middle that stretches most of the seat cover, is a rubbery feeling material that isn't very comfortable when shifting.
If you are a lady who wears short skirts or shorts or have a lady who rides with you in the vehicle and are looking at the Sport seat covers watch out. The black portion of the cover gets burning HOT in the sun. The ridges in the cover also leave goofy looking marks on exposed skin that take a bit to go away and can cause discomfort over long trips if you don't have some cloth material in between you and the cover. You can just keep a small towel or something similar in the truck for the ladies to sit on. This is what I do for my wife.
Also note that these seat covers, due to the waterproof design, breathe very very little. This means that if you sweat you are going to end up a bit sticky, even on short trips.
I personally don't mind any of this so much due to the fact that any other of the neoprene type seat covers would have these same problems and cost quite a bit more than the TRD covers. The look, logo and color match all fit the Graphite interior very well although installation was a complete PITA (typical).
alright, i know what you are all going to say because i am a dumbass. i was hooking up an amp and i was really tired and just totally brainfarted, and i accidently hooked up the ground wire to the 12v power input, and the 12v power to the ground input, which i know is a huge mistake. i know i know, but i need some help, is there any way to open it up and look for signs of it being blown or fried? there wasnt any smoke or sparks or anything, but i cant get it to work, so any advice would be helpful, and i know! DUMB MISTAKE!
Another mistake you made was not disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery while you are doing wiring. If a wire slips while you are making some connections, you can mess some stuff up, or create some fireworks and blow a fuse.
Be sure that the main power wire is properly fused within 18" of the battery.
If the amp still has a warranty take it back, and don't give the store employees any details. If it's not under warranty, check any built-in fuses. If you don't see any on the outside take it apart and check inside.
yeah i did disconnect the negative from the battery before i started with the connections, i just hooked it up wrong, reconnected the battery after i wired the amp and then realized the wiring mistake. i just didnt know if that mistake would actually dude damage the amp, and not just blow a fuse. thanks for the help
I know I'll probably get slammed for "preaching", but wouldn't it be more honest to just admit your mistake and see if they are willing to help you out?
Returning the amp without admitting your error that fried it is just putting the cost for your error on someone else. Some may rationalize that it's some "big company that deserves to be screwed 'cause they screw everyone", but the reality is that the cost goes on to all of the other customers who don't fry their equipment -and maybe even some who pay a technician to install it so that they don't fry it.
Go ahead and call tech support or the store and tell them what happened, and ask if they can help you out. Maybe they say that you're screwed (but, then again, you did it to yourself), or maybe there is a fusible link or even a diode that blew inside that can be replaced relatively cheaply, or maybe they'll offer to fix you up just as a customer relations act.
well, i ended up replacing some fuses that were blown in the amp, and the problem was solved. im just glad there wasnt any damage to the amp. i got lucky for sure. thanks for the help.
For anyone interested in buying a skid plate for your 05 or 06 Taco, I've done the research for you. metrotpn.com has it for $148.50, and ground shipping was only $7.50. Best price on the internet and my local dealers wouldn't touch the price. I should be getting mine on Monday.
I want to throw a simple cheap lift on my truck just to fit some bigger tires, and a little more clearance. I saw Daystar makes a 2.5" front spacer kit for $87 will this work? I figure the back I don't even have to touch cause they don't turn and probably won't rub. But If I need to lift the back what is available and pricing? Thanks for any input!
Looking to get a Tonneau cover for my 05 Tacoma. Anyone out there have a suggestion for the right choice? I see many different options just unsure what brand is best.
Is anyone aware of which is the best performing aftermarket exhaust for the new tacos? I know theres the TRD and Borla, but I haven't seen any results from a dyno test. I am planning on buying the TRD exhaust, anyone dislike theirs?
Parking Lights are for ... parking. They should not be used for driving lights. In most states, having parking lights alone illuminated while driving is illegal.
DRL are generally the full set of marker lights (as in parking lights) plus the lowbeam headlamps on at half voltage. (This provides 1/4 of the power for the low beam headlamps.) The half voltage is usually accomplished by the DRL switch energizing the headlamps in series as opposed to parallel, thus providing a nominal 6V to each bulb instead of 12.
DRL can be added after the fact, but please don't use parking lights inlieu of DRLs.
Alternatively, w/ the 05 you can simply turn on your headlights and leave them on. When you remove the key from the ignition and then open your door, they will go off, but will come on again when you restart the vehicle.
I have a tacoma acess cab, 2006....I has the spot for the driving lights in the front bumper. Has a plastic insert that comes out. Would llike to know where to purchase driving lights for it. or where can I get that lowbeam headlamp swithch that puts the headlights at half voltage for driving lights.
Good Day, Looking to buy a bad extender (7t) at 282 or the cargo divider(d2) at 295 from toyota I know there are other places with better prices but I do not have it in my comp at home, could you guys post the links, I am looking for a good decent price.
I have an 05 Toco and ever since I got it I felt that pedal is soft when applying the brakes compared to other trucks I have driven. I spoke to the dealer after I had them fix the wind noise from the windshiled, which is also a problem the tocos have. they told me that the brake system was working fine. But I feel that i have to step and keep stepping on the pedal a lot further then I think I should before I stop. It feels like im pulling something behide me, is how i would best describe it. Does anyone know if there is any after market brake accessories (IE) master cylinder, rotor brake booster? or have the same concern.
Just picked up my new tacoma access cab and was absolutely floored when I was told there are no racks available because of the new composite bed. I am a carpenter and bought this truck to work. Have owned 2 toyota pick-ups in the past and they have served me well. What the hey is going on here? any thoughts? Feeling dooped!
paratrooper, I bought the TRD cat-back..local dealer met the internet price. Cost was about $450 total. Has a great sound and I believe I've picked up a few horses. How much? Don't know. Sure a dyno test is out there somewhere. I'm sure someone on here will find one. Borla and some others also put out a good product. Think they'll all be pretty close. I was ready to buy..the TRD came out. Done deal. Do a little research. You'll be good!
Tell me about the wind noise fix. I just ordered a 2006 Tacoma Doublecab and I noticed more wind noise than I would like in the demo that I drove. Is there a TSB or do dealers just fix the ones that owners complain about?
I dont know if there is a TSB. I know that service rep knew right where the problem was before I pointed it out. The center of the windshield. They told me they needed to take it off and reseal it.
I installed a Truxcedo tonneau on my 05 tacoma, easy to install fits nice easy to roll up out of the way when you need the bed. Got it through autoanything.com, they had the best price and did not have to pay shipping.
Just bought my 06 Tacoma 4x4 Dbl cab TRD Off Road pkg. Installed the Westin chrome tubes( I don't agree with the "looks redneck" comment I saw posted here) and roof rack. Wanted to add a TRD supercharger(not out yet) and upgrade the 16" 265/70 stock tires without lifting the truck(fits nicely in my garage) and with Blacksand Pearl, the truck needs to be garage kept. Has anyone tried any larger/wider tires on their truck? I don't want to lift it but I don't mind buying new wheels. The front suspension looks like it may rub against the tires if they are any wider. Has anybody gone wider and must you buy a new set of wheels that are offset?
I have a "05" Access cab, Has anyone had experience or know anyone who has put a plow on a Tundra.. Fisher makes a "Homesteader" for home (www.fishersnowplows.com) use only for the Tundra. Looking for any input, Thank you.
I just recently purchased and had installed a Volant Cold air intake system and the JBA header and exhaust system. WOW did my truck wake up I thought it was fast before. I am having it dyno next week along with another 4.0 taco 4x4 to see what the gains were. I will let you know. I can tell you that stock my fastest 1/4 mile run was 15.55. I am going to the track tonight to run again after the mods. The next step is UNICHIP.
Anyone run into any problems removing the TRD decals on their Tacoma? I just got a 2006 TRD Sport package and I think the decals detract from the appearance of the truck
I bought my 2005 Tundra without the compass and temperature components in the overhead console. Does anyone know of a source to buy those other than Toyota or other good solutions for a compass and temperature add on?
I have found aftermarket Compass and Temperature modules anywhere from $69 to $129 on a site called Auto anything. The after market GPS devices on that site start at $299 and go up from there. What I would really like to find would be an after market overhead unit like the manufacturers. I priced Toyota's separately after I got the truck and the wanted $800 for it.
If all you care about is direction, speed, etc... and not mapping, you can get an eTrex for $100:
Have you tried any junkyards for the OEM unit? I know the truck is new, but I'm sure a few have been wrecked already. Many junkyards (ok, parts recyclers... ) belong to online services where they can search each other's inventories.
Also keep in mind that 2004+ 4Runner models may also do the trick.
I have been thinking about trying the junkyards as an alternative. I'll try that route before going with an aftermarket product. Appreciated the input.
Since Toyota does not install body side molding on the Tacoma (it does on the Tundra) to help protect the doors from door dings has anyone found a supplier of body side molding that is color-keyed to the vehicle that looks like a factory installation?
Thule has developed a multipurpose rack system that attaches to the factory track mounted in the bed of the Tacoma. You will need the 421 Xsporter rack and XK1 adapter kit, which was specifically designed for the Tacoma. The adapter kit will be available in stores in Jan 2006. The Xsporter has a capacity of 400lbs, is all Aluminum, and comes std with load stops and locks. Price for both the Xsporter and adapter kit is approx $500. Check out www.thuleracks.com for more details.
I know this must have been covered before but I just can't seem to find the info I need doing a search. My apolgies if it is a FAQ.
Has anyone installed either an OEM or aftermarket cruise control unit for their Tundra? If so how hard was it to install?, Where did you get it? and how much was it?
Love my new 05 access cab, manual transmission but would really like cruise control for those long highway trips.
If anyone is looking for an end of the year bargain the '05's gets a $3,000 cash back from Toyota. My out the door price was 19,203 with a bed liner, fog lamps and comfort package.

For the plastic emblems use fishing line to get under the emblem and saw up and down til it comes off.
Took all mine off.
