Speaker Adapter
Any suggestions for speakers?
The main things I look for in a standard door speaker is a poly (plastic) cone, because paper cones don't hold up well to moisture and sun. Then I like a good rubber surround. The surround is the hump shaped part that goes around the edge of the cone. It is part of the speakers "suspension". A rubber surround is more durable than a foam surround. And don't go crazy with the 3 and 4-way speakers. You don't need 6 speakers built into one. :confuse: I prefer a good component set, which is when the tweeter and the mid range speaker are 2 separate items, not built into eachother. They usually come with good crossovers to match them together.
And don't expect the speakers in the store to sound the same way when you put them in the truck. Your trucks' interior is a lot different than a store showroom. So I mostly go by the brand, the build, and the price. You get what you pay for.
The guy who tinted my windows sells JL. I'll check them out.
This truck is probably a 10 year purchase. Extra money on speakers is not a problem.
Does JBL have a jack for mini iPod wiring?

Look into a PIE Interface. I bought mine from Logjam Electronics, or you can Google it. Any local installer should also be aware of it. I picked one up to connect a satellite radio to a factory radio. It works great!

Thanks, but no thanks. I think it's cheaper to replace the head unit. LOL
two ways for the back three ways might take over and leave the fronts to drowning in it

With a head unit that still works withe the steering wheel controls AND has an Aux input that charges the IPOD?
I'm looking for an aftermarket head to use with my XM, and models that either include an XM radio, an XM ready radio with the black box, or an Aux input to use with my existing XM tuner, that work with the factory controls, are closer to $400.
In addition, I also have the question, Where are you guys finding a place to put your amps? I would think under the seat would be too cramped up. Interested in getting one, but I wouldn't want to make it noticable to thieves.
Thanks.
A local detail shop tinted the front glass of my Access Cab with 3M 20%. It matches nicely. The cost was $60, out the door.
20% tint is NOT legal in my state on these particular windows. Check and know what yours allows before doing it.
New guy here with a question. I'm looking for a tailgate lock (the regular kind, with a key) to fit a 2004 Prerunner. None of the online places I've checked with could tell me if locks listed for Tacoma will fit the Prerunner. I assume this is so, but ... I'd rather not get it and find it won't work.
Any experience with this?
Thanks.
Gene.
Tailgate Lock
I figured a Tacoma is a Tacoma is a Tacoma, but I've ordered parts a couple of times for other things and had to return them because they weren't quite the right model and I wanted to be sure.
Thanks again.
Gene.
a lot. Will have to remove the light and put silicone sealant over the thin gasket.
The light itself has water in it, too. Hope it doesn't affect the interior of the
light. Always thought that SnugTop was the top of the line in canopies.
Disappointed.
Bought Toyota's running boards. The boards were cheaper than many of the
other after market ones (surprise) and they went on like a dream. 20 minutes
to do both sides. They will protect the sides of the body somewhat from rock
chips but they aren't too convenient for getting into and out of the truck since
they are so high.
Or a website to find some?
thanks
Ehlers.
Wheels: 16x8, Offset of +1, and Back Spacing of 4.5".
Truck: '05 PreRunner TRD Sport, DC, LB, w/ tow.
Tires: I'm hoping you guys/gals can tell me what size to get, but I'm seriously eyeing the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo.
PS. I'll have the TRD Sport tire & wheel package in exellent used condition for sale soon, if anyone is interested. hammaa at yahoo dot com. THANKS!!
Will come in handy with my 4 yr old climing into the cab and grandma whose 80.
Anyone have advice for installing these running boards? I've heard it is a simple install and can be done solo.
I ordered my Tacoma 4X4 DC sport lb in indigo ink on March 18, it was finally built on May 16, and they don't expect it to get here until June 22... 5 weeks after the production date. I guess they're driving the transport backwards all the way from California... It's getting to be very frustrating, especially since the sales guy usually takes a week and a half to return my calls (and he's too far for me to drive to - 7 hours).
Where are you?
I've heard that some Toyota vehicles are shipped via auto carrier ship, through the Panama Canal, from the West to East coasts.
I looked at the instruction sheet for the sill protectors and found that 3 part numbers are listed. They are PT747-35050, 35051 and 35052. The front door protectors have the word "Tacoma" on them and the back do not. They were shipped by a Toyota dlr. in the state of Washington so I assume that they are the same as you would get from your local dlr.
IMO, the step tube Challenger running boards look very odd on any Toyota trucks. To me, it looks out of place. I much prefer custom painted running boards. From a distance, they look like a pair of aero side kits on a nice looking Tundra/Tacoma.
One of my main concerns is that my wife has a bad knee and really has a hard time stepping up into the passenger side so I need them to be functional as well as to look good. I'd also like to hear of any other aftermarket boards that anyone would recomend.
I'd love to see some GOOD pics of both, it's hard to envision how the truck would look without actually seeing them installed.

They only do Tundra/Tacoma Doublecabs. However, I think upon special request, they can get you access cab as well.
I have a pair of custom painted running boards that I bought from the manufacturer. I love them!!
If your wife has a bad knee, stepping onto the challenger (step tube) can be slippery when wet. What's nice about these painted running boards is that the boards are really wide. It's good for women with high heels. LOL!
Also has anyone tried the taco tunes mount kit?
I am on a waiting list for a Leer 100XQ canopy they should be out soon, any feedback on the Leer?
:P
Anyone have experience with electronic tailgate locks on the '05 Tacoma? The Pop-lock alternative looks cheezy, plus it adds yet another key to the set of crap I have to carry around.
Just incidentally, it is irritating that you have to choose the automatic transmission to get the long box; I hope Toyota fixes this in the future.
I've also been told that there's a week plus wait from the holding tank in MA... I'll bet that the truck that I ordered hasn't even been built yet! (every time I ask about deliver, it's the same answer... by the end of the month or soon!)
Hope you're driving yours already... only two days until the end of the month for me... we'll see.
What's a guy to do?!?
My New England bound truck seemed to take forever, and I'll share the story I got.
I was told that some of these trucks are actually shipped East on a ship, via the Panama Canal. The story I got was that the Toyota ship from Japan unloaded West Coast bound imported Toyotas and Lexus cars in CA, took on the East Coast bound, CA manufactured product, and headed around. The ship stops again in CA to pick up Japan bound, USA made cars, for the return trip. It may even stop in Mexico to get vehicles there.
It might be all bull, but it actually makes some sense, if you consider that Toyota owns ships, but no railroads, and that the ports often install certain options.
The holding tank in MA may very well be the port of Boston.
Thanks,
Devan

back there by using a plastic container on the bench with slots cut in the base for one of the seat belts. Has anyone come up with a solution that seems to work. Might put a container on each side, one for tools and one for groceries, etc. I've tried putting stuff on the floor and it just tips over or moves around. Will need to secure the container so that it won't move around or become dangerous in a wreck.
