The cheapest way to find fender flares for your Tundra DC is to search through salvage yards....

I'm looking for direct-fit speaker suggestions for the '05 Taco Access Cab. I primarily listen to XM & CD's.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks! :P
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
You won't be able to find "direct fit" speakers because of the way that the stock speakers are made. They have a big mounting plate thing. If you install aftermarket speakers you'll have to rig something up to make them fit right. A lot of guys use these or make their own similar plate from wood.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I know about the adaptors.

    Any suggestions for speakers?

Personally, I like JL audio coaxials or component speakers. I used to work at a car audio store, and all of the JL Audio products were great. I especially love thier subs and amps. But JL Audio can be a little more difficult to find than brands like Sony or Pioneer. It just depends how much you want to search and how much you want to spend.

The main things I look for in a standard door speaker is a poly (plastic) cone, because paper cones don't hold up well to moisture and sun. Then I like a good rubber surround. The surround is the hump shaped part that goes around the edge of the cone. It is part of the speakers "suspension". A rubber surround is more durable than a foam surround. And don't go crazy with the 3 and 4-way speakers. You don't need 6 speakers built into one. :confuse: I prefer a good component set, which is when the tweeter and the mid range speaker are 2 separate items, not built into eachother. They usually come with good crossovers to match them together.

And don't expect the speakers in the store to sound the same way when you put them in the truck. Your trucks' interior is a lot different than a store showroom. So I mostly go by the brand, the build, and the price. You get what you pay for.

    Thanks!

The guy who tinted my windows sells JL. I'll check them out.

This truck is probably a 10 year purchase. Extra money on speakers is not a problem.

My 05 Tundra Double Cab with TRD package comes with the JBL upgrade stereo/speakers. Recently, I bought an FM transmitter for my mini iPod. The wireless reception is terrible.

Does JBL have a jack for mini iPod wiring?

    Thanks

    Checklist:

    1) Tint: check
    2) Alarm: check
    3) Custom Running Board: check
    4) mini iPod wiring: pending
    5) moonroof installation: pending
    6) Lojack: pending

Look into a PIE Interface. I bought mine from Logjam Electronics, or you can Google it. Any local installer should also be aware of it. I picked one up to connect a satellite radio to a factory radio. It works great!

    Yikes! $179.00!!

Thanks, but no thanks. I think it's cheaper to replace the head unit. LOL

Retrax and RollBak, and I think there are others as well. I'm planning to buy the Retrax, with cutouts for the stakee pockets. Check http://tonneau-covers.info/
  • yuhaviatyuhaviat Member Posts: 2
Based on research so far, looks like Retrax and RollBak have the best hard retractable bed covers. Retrax looks better, and you can order it with cutouts so you can use the stake pockets, if that's important to you. RollBak looks a bit stronger and more secure. Cost is close. I'm planning to buy the Retrax--just shopping for besst price. There are other options as well. Check http://tonneau-covers.info/

With a head unit that still works withe the steering wheel controls AND has an Aux input that charges the IPOD?

I'm looking for an aftermarket head to use with my XM, and models that either include an XM radio, an XM ready radio with the black box, or an Aux input to use with my existing XM tuner, that work with the factory controls, are closer to $400.

Have the 05 Tacoma, I noticed that the window aren't tinted, they are stained instead. Has anyone tried tinting their front windows to match the rear ones? How does it look? I'm thinking that it would be a much lighter tint if I were to do it. I'm interested because I have a black sand pearl truck looking to tint the fronts.

In addition, I also have the question, Where are you guys finding a place to put your amps? I would think under the seat would be too cramped up. Interested in getting one, but I wouldn't want to make it noticable to thieves.

    Thanks.

I have a 97 extended cab Tacoma with the split 40/60 bench seat. The driver's seat in particular has never been very comfortable, and now (after about 140k miles) I'd really like to replace it. Looking at aftermarket bucket seats, maybe Recaro's. Anyone done this? If I put in bucket seats, is it possible to install a center console/arm rest? Local Toyota dealer says I can't buy a console, is there an aftermarket option?

A local detail shop tinted the front glass of my Access Cab with 3M 20%. It matches nicely. The cost was $60, out the door.

20% tint is NOT legal in my state on these particular windows. Check and know what yours allows before doing it.

I just had LineX sprayed in my bed. It's really incredible, looks unbelievable and has a lifetime warranty. It cost 409.00 plus tax. Google LineX, it'll bring to there website, then you can find a dealer near you.

    Hello, all --

New guy here with a question. I'm looking for a tailgate lock (the regular kind, with a key) to fit a 2004 Prerunner. None of the online places I've checked with could tell me if locks listed for Tacoma will fit the Prerunner. I assume this is so, but ... I'd rather not get it and find it won't work.

    Any experience with this?

    Thanks.

    Gene.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
All 2004 Tacomas have the same tailgate latch/handle. I really recommend ordering the free Performance Products catalog as well. Lots of good Tacoma accessories in there. Here's a link to what you're looking for.

    Tailgate Lock
  • charletoncharleton Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the link. This looks like what I was looking for.

I figured a Tacoma is a Tacoma is a Tacoma, but I've ordered parts a couple of times for other things and had to return them because they weren't quite the right model and I wanted to be sure.

    Thanks again.

    Gene.

Bought a Super Sport canopy for my 2005 PreRunner. The third light leaks
a lot. Will have to remove the light and put silicone sealant over the thin gasket.
The light itself has water in it, too. Hope it doesn't affect the interior of the
light. Always thought that SnugTop was the top of the line in canopies.
    Disappointed.
Bought Toyota's running boards. The boards were cheaper than many of the
other after market ones (surprise) and they went on like a dream. 20 minutes
to do both sides. They will protect the sides of the body somewhat from rock
chips but they aren't too convenient for getting into and out of the truck since
    they are so high.

Hi - I got the TRD Ivan Stwart wheels a few weeks ago, and need to get tires to match. I want the largest tires I can reasonably fit on my Taco w/out a lift. Here are some specs:

Wheels: 16x8, Offset of +1, and Back Spacing of 4.5".

Truck: '05 PreRunner TRD Sport, DC, LB, w/ tow.

Tires: I'm hoping you guys/gals can tell me what size to get, but I'm seriously eyeing the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo.

PS. I'll have the TRD Sport tire & wheel package in exellent used condition for sale soon, if anyone is interested. hammaa at yahoo dot com. THANKS!!

Got my 05 Tundra DC 4x2 in the Salsa Red, Toupe interior. I am on the road with her now. The ride is very nice and quite, almost car like. I ordered the Challenger Step running boards off ebay and will install them this weekend. Dealer wanted $500 and I got them off ebay for half that much.
Will come in handy with my 4 yr old climing into the cab and grandma whose 80.

Anyone have advice for installing these running boards? I've heard it is a simple install and can be done solo.

Have any of you purchased sill protectors for the Tacoma Double Cab? The dealer told me they don't have a part number for the sill protectors for the DC. I'm sure they're the same as those for the other models, except you need 4 instead of 2. Does anyone know for sure?

I ordered my Tacoma 4X4 DC sport lb in indigo ink on March 18, it was finally built on May 16, and they don't expect it to get here until June 22... 5 weeks after the production date. I guess they're driving the transport backwards all the way from California... It's getting to be very frustrating, especially since the sales guy usually takes a week and a half to return my calls (and he's too far for me to drive to - 7 hours).

    Where are you?

I've heard that some Toyota vehicles are shipped via auto carrier ship, through the Panama Canal, from the West to East coasts.

I'm in Canada, specifically in Timmins Ontario (approx 500 mi north of Toronto), but I'm getting the truck through a dealer in Ottawa. I expected it to come on land, but I guess by water make sense too. That would explain the delays.
  • ftoftenftoften Member Posts: 16
I just put mine on the other day. I got them from toyota parts people.com for 21.60. I also ordered the bed mat and some other stuff at the same time. Shipping was apx. $8-$10.00. It took about a week to get it delivered to the door.

I looked at the instruction sheet for the sill protectors and found that 3 part numbers are listed. They are PT747-35050, 35051 and 35052. The front door protectors have the word "Tacoma" on them and the back do not. They were shipped by a Toyota dlr. in the state of Washington so I assume that they are the same as you would get from your local dlr.

<< I ordered the Challenger Step running boards off ebay and will install them this weekend. Dealer wanted $500 and I got them off ebay for half that much. >>

IMO, the step tube Challenger running boards look very odd on any Toyota trucks. To me, it looks out of place. I much prefer custom painted running boards. From a distance, they look like a pair of aero side kits on a nice looking Tundra/Tacoma.

I have an '05 Prerunner access cab and am trying to decide between factory running boards and the ZeeDee FX ones. I know this has been discussed somewhat, but I'd like to hear from people who have either and what they think.

One of my main concerns is that my wife has a bad knee and really has a hard time stepping up into the passenger side so I need them to be functional as well as to look good. I'd also like to hear of any other aftermarket boards that anyone would recomend.

I'd love to see some GOOD pics of both, it's hard to envision how the truck would look without actually seeing them installed.
  • hvan3hvan3 Member Posts: 630
Need a good custom painted running boards? Check out this website.

    www.qualitycustomboards.com

They only do Tundra/Tacoma Doublecabs. However, I think upon special request, they can get you access cab as well.

I have a pair of custom painted running boards that I bought from the manufacturer. I love them!!

If your wife has a bad knee, stepping onto the challenger (step tube) can be slippery when wet. What's nice about these painted running boards is that the boards are really wide. It's good for women with high heels. LOL!

Has anyone looked into this? I know K&N has just come out with it and i am waiting for my local parts store to get it in.

Also has anyone tried the taco tunes mount kit?

I am on a waiting list for a Leer 100XQ canopy they should be out soon, any feedback on the Leer?

My suggestion? A nice full adjustable seat and console of 4runner that you can find in scrap yard. I got a 2002 prerunner, the bucket seat are basicly the same as 97 model and for a tall guy like me, it's not to confortable. I'm looking right now for 4runner seat. Good luck.

I have the '05 double-cab automatic long box, and I'm adding a Pace-Edwards roll-top tonneau cover... but there's not much security there without some way to lock the tailgate.

Anyone have experience with electronic tailgate locks on the '05 Tacoma? The Pop-lock alternative looks cheezy, plus it adds yet another key to the set of crap I have to carry around.

Just incidentally, it is irritating that you have to choose the automatic transmission to get the long box; I hope Toyota fixes this in the future.

I live in Vermont, and have been waiting for 8 weeks for my 05 Double Cab, Long Bed... Dealer said that it was shipped on June 5, and would take between 10-15 days from CA by rail (at this rate, wonder if it's the old pump action like the old days?)
I've also been told that there's a week plus wait from the holding tank in MA... I'll bet that the truck that I ordered hasn't even been built yet! (every time I ask about deliver, it's the same answer... by the end of the month or soon!)
Hope you're driving yours already... only two days until the end of the month for me... we'll see.
    What's a guy to do?!?

My New England bound truck seemed to take forever, and I'll share the story I got.

I was told that some of these trucks are actually shipped East on a ship, via the Panama Canal. The story I got was that the Toyota ship from Japan unloaded West Coast bound imported Toyotas and Lexus cars in CA, took on the East Coast bound, CA manufactured product, and headed around. The ship stops again in CA to pick up Japan bound, USA made cars, for the return trip. It may even stop in Mexico to get vehicles there.

It might be all bull, but it actually makes some sense, if you consider that Toyota owns ships, but no railroads, and that the ports often install certain options.

The holding tank in MA may very well be the port of Boston.

Anyone have any experience with the Bedrug bedliner? Looks like a good alternative to a dropin liner and won't mar the paint underneath. Just don't know how durable they are for throwing heaving objects in and sliding them around. Sprayin liners only protect from scratching, so they are out.

I recently bought a 2004 taco and have also been looking into superchargers/turbos. The TRD supercharger was loud inside the truck and I could'nt seem to find anything about a bolt on turbo for my truck until I found sts turbo.com. You should check it out, they give you some info on both and carry a kit for our trucks. Good luck :)

I have a 98 Tacoma 2WD Reg Cab, which had stock 195/14s. Did a body lift, and replaced wheels/tires with 235/75R15s, using wheels with the offset specified for the originals. Front tires showed scalloping after 10000 mi, so I rotated and took to two different shops for balance and alignment. Both shops verified alignment and balance as "in spec", but I still get hop or shimmy at around 60mph on the highway. I put new (standard) shocks on the front, but performance did not improve. Any ideas? Thank you!

I have been looking for a rack system that will work with a hard tonneau (folding or rollup) for my 2005 Tundra double cab. I carry kayaks and canoes on the racks. It seems that when a tonneau rail is installed it eliminates the ability to add a rail rack and I can find no cab racks to work with a hitch rack. Are ther any solutions out there?\

I am disappointed in the small storage areas under the rear bench seats of my 2005 PreRunner Access Cab. (I could cram a lot more stuff behind the seat of my 1990 S-10 single cab.) I could create some extra storage space
back there by using a plastic container on the bench with slots cut in the base for one of the seat belts. Has anyone come up with a solution that seems to work. Might put a container on each side, one for tools and one for groceries, etc. I've tried putting stuff on the floor and it just tips over or moves around. Will need to secure the container so that it won't move around or become dangerous in a wreck.

I was thinking about buying a spare tire lock for my '01 Tacoma, but have a small problem. I was going to buy one from Toyota, but accidently came across a site "http://www.accessconnect.com/prod04.htm" to find that another manufacturer makes a tire lock. The big question is which one is really better? Does anyone here have a spare tire lock? Any useful info/advice will be appreciated.
