Hitting the 'refresh' button during posting, are we? :) You know you can delete that extra post, right? :) Accidents happen, it's all good...

I posted, got offline, then came back online to refresh the page to see if there were any more responses since my post, and shazam! there appeared my last post once again. doh.

thanks for the tip on deleting. even though there is that option key, most places don't allow you to delete your own post, even if there is a delete icon, so I didn't even try.

The 16" and 17" alloys both weigh 21.2 lbs, but the 17" wheels are probably fitted with lighter tires- they have a shorter sidewall and lower treadwear.

I the unsprung weight of the 17's is certainly the least of all the options. The rotating inertia of the 17's is probably about the same as the 16" alloys, and both are CERTAINLY better than the 16" steelies.

your yellow sports combo DOES look awesome. I love it.

However, I'm too tall for the moonroof, and I guess I'm just too introverted to be comfortable driving around with everyone staring at me with cardrool.

    enjoy the spotlight. :)
  • stretchsjestretchsje Member Posts: 700
there's no question yellow looks best, sport package or not. It's so bright, it's the color where the wheel covers are least noticable :-)

Not only that, but yellow is an easy color to keep clean. Hence yellow taxis.

Of course, I got the redfire- I like that too.

MazdaMarla- redfire only looks good clean and in bright sunlight, but it is worth it on those days.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I didn't know what the difference between the 16" and 17" alloy wheels were. In my car, there was a good 10lb. difference between the 2 per wheel, so that's why I thought it would have impacted fuel economy.

As far as the yellow with the wheel covers, ewww! I saw one at the dealership, on the grass, and it was hideous! I also saw that this particular dealer didn't have not one Sport Pkg. car in stock. They all seemed to have alloys though, but I don't know if they were i or s models.

With colors, I like the lapis followed by the yellow and the redfire. Someone down the road from me has a black '6 they just got, and it's always dirty. Shame on them!

Windshield wiper fluid streaks show up green on a yellow car. I have yet to find clear washer fluid.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Do they really??? That's too funny! :) I never thought about that. What about that rain-x fluid, the pink stuff? I wonder how that would show up?

Folks, a soliciting message along with a couple of responses have been removed.

Just in case some of you may not know, soliciting is off-limits in the Town Hall. Check the Membership Agreement - there is a link on the left side of the page.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Max, Max, Max!
You are comparing the right vehicals to the Mazda 6, but there are some things that you might not know about the 6 and "those other vehicals."
You might say that Altima might have more horse power, and that is true in deed. But horsepower doesn't make that vehical. It looks good on paper, but stats don't make champions.
The Mazda 6 has a world class 4 as well as 6 cylinder engine with matched manual transmissions, available Sport At dual-mode automatic transmissions, sports-sedan front and rear suspention, and advanced steering and breaking system.
You might say that the Accord has more room, so that must mean it's comfortabl. And again that is true but the mazda 6 has an OptiSpace design that make betteruse of it's interior space, which is a feature that all ocupants will appreciate. The 6 also offer more trunk room then the Accord as well as the 60/40 split remote automatic fold down rear seat back, a feature that you will not find in the Accord.

The other intersting thing about yellow is that in Europe - many fire departments are now using yellow vehicles instead of red. You see that here & there in the U.S.

Extreme validation that you won't be missed. :)

Yellow is definitely not a stealth color.

And Mazdamarla - I'd bet after 5-10 years you'll be tired of whatever color you get, silver (too common), white (too plain), yellow (too loud). You get the idea. Familiarity breeds contempt.
  • combustible1combustible1 Member Posts: 264
was it black leather or cloth, for which you had to tint the windows?

and general question to all: will the dark grey show swirls, streaks and stuff as badly as a black car does?
  • redkey1redkey1 Member Posts: 270
Yup, I have a solar yellow wrangler and there are green streaks all over the sides of the winshield. PITA. Haven't tried the pink stuff.
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
Well, I bought an orange Miata at 35, so I'm a firm believer that with age doesn't have to come boring colors. I think the yellow looks really cool. (Although I think the yellow and blue cars only look good with the sport package...) And c'mon, Marla, you're driving white now. That screams "rental car!" :-) Wouldn't you rather have your car scream "I may be more chronologically advanced than I used to be, but that doesn't mean I'm getting old!"?

The biggest negative on yellow comes if you have a habit of driving over the speed limit. You're going to stick out in a crowd. When I was driving home from NH in my new 6, I saw a yellow Protege coming the other direction. He was at least two miles away. If you're a chronic speed law breaker, I'd suggest black or gray. :)

As for 17s.. Never had them, but I've seen comments that they wear noticeably faster. FWIW, I've been driving a 6s with the 16s in the snow here in Vermont and the traction and handling's been great. But my dealer warned me that the all-seaons on the 16s were okay for winter driving, but with the 17s I'd definitely want to get a set of snows for winter driving. That's one reason I went for the standard 6s with an add-on spoiler instead of the sport package.

However, if you really wanted the other stuff in the sport package but not the 17s, I'd imagine many dealers would be willing to swap out for the 16" alloys. After all, they can put the 17s on another non-sport 6s and charge extra for them.
  • redkey1redkey1 Member Posts: 270
How good is the 6 in the snow up there? Do you have the traction control? Did you have thru all the snow this year or is it very new?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
It was a black 01 Protege with black cloth interior. It still got hotter than hell inside, the AC was too weak maybe. Also, the sunroof panel was clear glass. I had all the windows tinted at 35% (legal limit in MD), and the sunroof darkened very dark. It helped some, but still hot.

I have a white VW Jetta now, with black leather seats. The leather gets less hot than the black cloth did actually. Had to be the exterior color that was making the heat build up.
  • drumm01drumm01 Member Posts: 97
Funny you say that redkey1. Just last Sunday I stopped at two Mazda dealerships and would you believe that NEITHER one had an M6s with the sport package? It seems to me that Mazda did not predicted that manual 6s’s will be so popular. Who knows….

But I am telling you, they were all 6i’s and the only 6 with the sport package was a 6i with an automatic transmission (yawn). I will say, however, that it looked stunning. It was a dark, metallic titanium color with gray leather interiors.. Maaannn, it looked beautiful. To me the 6 is a car that HAS to be seen in person to really appreciate it.

Give me your email address I will send photos of Sepang Green to you. It's a beautiful color and washer fluid would not show on it. Looks as good as silver. Not as flashy as Yellow. Perfect for when you get to 40. ;)

I agree! Pin stripes do absolutely nothing for the 6. The dealers put them too high and they conflict with the character line which runs through the door handles. In any case, they do not belong on the 6. You don't see them on Lexus, Mercedes, and BMWs. Scotch tape is not classy. It's a relic of the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Take them off in the first 30 days for easier removal. Tell your dealers they are past history.

and while you're at it, get yourself a cool sports jacket, wrap-around sunglasses and some Italian made shoes! Hang out at local bicycle races, be seen eating at outdoor restaurants...

OK, I too am on the fence, much for the same reasons other have mentioned above; and despite Ruefus's brave words he needs to wait another 10 years and see if he still feels the same way (or at least understand)... but dadgummit, that yellow looks great, contrasting nicely with the red tail lights and a grey (not black) interior. I kinda, sorta like the dark grey, the silver, but my eyes are ALWAYS pulled back to the YELLOW. It is simply the best color (as understood by all the car mags.)

So, the final decision is... well, on good days (like today here at work) I'll go for it. On bad days I'll go for something more conservative (sigh). Seriously, I think I've resolved the argument more in favor getting exactly what I want for the next couple years rather than some practical argument for a more conservative long term (Yes, I hang on to cars, my current one is 11 years.) Now, I just need to work out these option package questions and pull the trigger.

    Ciao,

    Redkey1,

I've had mine for a few weeks. No major snows, but I did get to take it out on some local roads that had a couple of inches and hadn't been plowed yet. With the stock 16" tires, it gripped very well, and kept going the right direction around corners. (Definitely better than my RWD Miata with snow tires managed!) The traction control did kick in a couple of times when I was braking to a stop.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
pinstripes - Just tell the dealer you don't want them and to take them off. Don't fall for the line that they already paid for it so you have to pay for it. They pay some guy like 20 bucks per car to do the whole lot. It's a joke.
16s vs. 17s - Generally speaking, the 17 inch tires will wear out faster. Depending on the tire, there may be a very large difference in tread life. The 16s will probably give you better traction in snow (I lived in NE WI for 30 years).
colors - This is real personal, but here goes. My pick is the Lapis Blue, followed by the Steel Grey. The silver is just OK, IMO. The red actually looks good on this car, but I'm not into red cars, or speeding tickets. The yellow, WOW, this car looks great in this color, and even better with the sport grill and wing spoiler. But, you gotta have the "right" personality for a yellow car. I would get the sport grill in either case, as I think the car looks great with it.

Just my $.02. My choice is Lapis Blue with sport grill, no spoiler, 16s.
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Okay - I just emailed the dealer to see if they would swap out the 17" wheels for 16"s if I got the Sport Package, at no extra cost. We'll see what they say.
  • silvercrownsilvercrown Member Posts: 237
With all this talk about the sport grill, I am curious to see what it looks like on an actual M6. Can someone who has the sport grill on their 6 please post some pictures of it?

As for colors, I was originally leaning toward the Lapis Blue, but when I saw it in person, it looked too bright for me. It's a different shade of blue than it appears to be in the pictures. It's a pretty color, but it does look a bit garish on a car. Fowler sent me some pictures of the Sepang Green and they were beautiful. That's a nice color for the 6 and I can't wait to see one in person. I think it will be a good color for me that will still look good years from now, but won't be a nightmare to keep clean. Somehow, I think that it will be a difficult color to get though.

BTW, I'm 36, but that alone wouldn't stop me from buying a bright yellow or bright blue car if I liked it. That has just never been my style, I probably would not have bought a screaming yellow car in my 20s either. Age is just a number and a state of mind and style is a matter of taste regardless of age. But the Mazda 6 is beautiful in any color. I think I'm already sold on this car and I haven't even driven it yet.

I just picked up a Redfire 6S with sport package. I have the sport grille on order and I should have it on Monday. I'll post pics after I install it.

I've seen a non-sport 6 in yellow and it looks like crap. I think this one was ordered sight unseen because it's a car that only a mother could love.

was that black or grey leather that I saw in those pictures. If grey, how? Did you get the ground effects added as a seperate package? (as we know the sports package comes with only black leather).

mazdamarla - what's all this new talk about the sports package coming from? lol. Weren't you the one NOT wanting the gfx, as you might get your clothes dirty stepping in and out of the car??

fowler - can you email me your sepang green pics? email addy is genovak@earthlink.net. thanks!
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
I'd think they'd definitely agree to swap the 17s for 16s if you're talking no extra cost. Given that they can charge extra for the 17s on another car, you'd be deserving of at least a small discount, IMHO.

Man, reading the recent postings here, some of you think folks in their 30's-40's are old. Well, some of us "old folk" enjoy sporty, good handling cars like the Mazda6s. For the record, I'm 53, my wife is 50, and the 6s was her birthday present. Now, we did buy the steel gray with black leather, and every other option, including the sport package.

We have always enjoyed good handling, performance oriented cars. Our past vehicles have included a 528i, two Maximas, a 280Z, a Boss 302, a chevy caprice with the police package (actually, a tremendous highway cruiser), etc. Although several of our friends drive town cars and caddies, we take just the opposite approach.

The best part is, our friends think we're crazy, but the kids think we're at least still partially "cool." The 6s goes like hell, and we're having a ball with it. The only non-factory option we've had to purchase is a Valentine One.

Windshield wiper: How are they in the cold. My current car blades, mainly the right side, tends to retain the curve shape of the window if during the night it has either snowed or had freezing rain. Does no good when trying to clear the window.
Trunk: What type of trunck hinges does it uses.
MazdaMarla, if it is not to much of a problem could you send me a pic of the Sepang Green, thank you.

  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
The wipers work great in snowy conditions, in my experience. And they're huge! :)

The trunk hinges are pretty ingenious -- they're mounted on the trunk lip, and don't protrude down into the trunk, so they don't bump into your cargo.

None of the dealers here (Tucson) have Sepang Green in their inventories. Can anyone describe this color? Is it a "pea green" ? I have heard it described as metallic...is this correct?
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
dude at the auto show said the wagon arrives in NOVEMBER.......can any of us wait that long?
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
think again! I saw my 10th 6 today this time it was white with new car plates on it. The person made a turn off the road so I didn't get a very good look at that. I posted on the Protege board a couple weeks ago there was a silver 6 sitting at the Mazda dealer sitting outside the showroom. Car is gone already so it must be sold. The 6 is not selling slow in Jersey. It is picking up.

As far a yellow 6 is concerned I wouldn't buy the yellow. The Yellow looks kinda good on a Mitsubishi Lancer and a late 80's/early 90's Prelude but thats about all the color yellow looks good on for automobiles.

As far as the dreaded option package is concerned ask them if you can just order all the options you want and not have to deal with this and that package. I'll agree with G35 Coupe Mazda should have done it the way they did it in the past: DX, LX, and ES. I hope the option packages for the upcoming 3 aren't like the 6 is now.

As far as somebody the Oddessy was a total redesign or the Accord is a total redesign I'll kinda disagree woth that. The Accord headlights looks a like Civic so its really not new. I do see a little 626/millienia in the 6 but is that a bad thing? No. The Oddessy was a total redesign I'll agree.
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
now they have a yellow and a black 6 sitting outside the dealership. Be interesting to see how long those last. The same Millenia has been there for 3 months(I think its still there.) Sales figures come out in 3 more weeks by the way.

I'm hopefully going to finalize my deal for a 6s MT later this morning!

Anyway, I had asked earlier about sport grille pictures--this morning, I found a page with a before and after pictures of the sport grille on a Glacier Silver (the color I'm getting):

    http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=284062- &page=4

I really like the grille, a lot more than I thought I would. It really changes the front end of the car--I just hope it looks that good in person.
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
I know, I know.... a girl can change her mind, can't she? ;-)

I WAS against the sport package and was only thinking of doing just the Rear Spoiler with the Premium Package. But you think I can see any pictures of a car like that, in a color that I am considering??? Nooooooooo.... I want to see what the heck the car would look like before I commit to it! All I see are plain-janes with NOTHING on them, or completely decked out with the Sport Package. Nothing inbetween. I DO like the way the Sport Package looks - always have. Still have concerns about the side sill extenders for the reason you mentioned above. <sigh> Actually the Japanese Mazda site has a "virtual garage" where you click on an option and the picture of the car adds/deletes it (sure wish the US site did that). So I can get somewhat of an idea of what it'd look like with JUST the Wing Spoiler, but only from a rear- and front-angle view. I'd like to see it from a Full Side-on view, too, you know? ARGH.

But at this point I can't even decide on the freaking exterior color, which is the most basic of decisions I'll have to make. :-)

I'M SO CONFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSED! ;-) I think I am thinking about this wayyyyyyyyyy too much.
  • combustible1combustible1 Member Posts: 264
I can feel your pain. :P

I've seen the car with the wing spoiler, sans sports package and it's a must (to have that spoiler). Otherwise, the car is a little too plain looking to my eyes, and the lip spoiler is too subtle to make much difference. The non-sport needs the bigger spoiler. The lip would be interesting on the sports pkg. though.

I prefer the sports pkg. look, but with the mandatory moonroof, which limits my seating options (won't be able to prop the seat upright for a varying seat position when I get drivers fatigue), I have to look to the non-sport version.. plus, it's cheaper too.

My original reason for considering this car in the first place, coming from a Toyota Camry, is I wanted a better handling car with good reliability and slightly smaller dimensions.

This car fits the bill. And usually, I don't like to buy new because it's such a waste of money.. but I must here as I can't wait much longer with my Camry fading fast. Now, I find myself getting carried away with picking colors, and getting all choosy about the "look" of the car too much when I should stick to my original rationale for considering this car.

my inability to make a decision (on color, pkgs., to order or not to order, etc.) continues..

I go for my straight jacket fitting this afternoon. Do they make them in colors other than white these days?.. perhaps speed yellow. ;)
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
I'd like mine in Steel Gray. No - Speed Yellow. No, wait - I think the Performance White instead. No - ................ ACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK! (too late - I've already lost) ;-)

I think I'm gonna (try to) stop obsessing about it right now - until April. That's when new configurations are supposedly going to be available on the website - namely the SCAs being an option no matter WHAT other things you choose or don't choose. That is the one thing that I will not sacrifice. If I'm buying a new car that I expect to drive for the next ~10 years, I want every safety feature I can get.

So I will stop making myself crazy, at least for the next 11 days until April 1 or so. :-D Then we'll let the games begin again. hee hee
  • combustible1combustible1 Member Posts: 264
for a crazy person. and I know crazy. :P

I just hope they set up the new configurations before April 1st.. If I go the order route, it's gonna be hard enough to have to wait for two whole months. I'd like to get a jump on it, ASAP.

but then again, if I still can't decide on a color, what difference will it make anyway!
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
Whats the big deal about that? The Sliver and Black give the 6 a sophisticated look. The blue gives the 6 a more playful look.
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Silver - blah. EVERYONE has silver cars. They are everywhere. I don't want to be lost in a sea of silver.

Black - nope. Too hard to keep clean. Too hot in the summertime.

Lapis Blue - I just don't care for that particular shade of blue on that particular car. If it was more of a metallic dark/midnight blue I'd go for it.
  • aromasaromas Member Posts: 314
If anybody can wait until the fall when the 2004 arrives, I heard somewhere that the titanium grey will be offered(don't quote me on it) that's out in Europe. Best color for this car IMO, kinda like the dark silver on the 03 Max and different from all the lighter silver cars out there while still easy to maintain. Pictures I've seen of the color really suit the car although it was a hatch so it might only be offered for that model type but who knows.
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
    Marla,

Aren't you waiting for the hatchback anyway? So you still have about 11 months to decide. :)

As for the spoiler-only, just pop over to That Other Mazda6 Board and ask someone to photoshop the spoiler onto a plain 6. There are guys there who live with that.

Of course, the hatch looks different (and better, dagnabbit!), so there's that too...
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Yeah, my original missive was to wait for the Hatchback. But I just don't know if I want to wait that lonnnnnnnng! Another whole year before I could even ORDER one! Of course, the more I think about it and the more I see others' pictures of their 6's now, the more I want to NOT wait and just get the darn sedan. I want to wait, but I don't want to wait, you know?

Patience has never been my strong point. :D
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
One thing to consider about the sport package is that you can't put the rear splash guards on with it. Not that I'm trying to make you even more confused, but I just thought I'd mention it in case you didn't know.

And, I agree with you completely on the safety features.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I agree, the titanium gray looks very nice! I saw one the other day and just spent a few minutes gawking at it. Of course, it also had that cool antenna.
