I've considered one myself. Probably would get a Passport or something one step above.

One really cool thing about the M6 is the flip up storage cubby on the dash. I'm thinking this would be the PERFECT place to throw a radar det. if I should happen to get pulled over.
I could always say the wires were for my cell phone. (and they're making detectors with fewere wires now)

    It's a thought.

Well, my '6 cost me $17,201, and that was a month after they debuted. You could get one for $17k easily now, me thinks.

The Cosworth casting process was adopted for new I4 cylinder block, the first time for mass production. This casting process has been adopted for the Formula 1 racing engine and uses the sand package to be filled with a molten aluminum alloy using a no turbulent electromagnetic pump, unlike a metal mold to be directly filled with molten metal.

The Cosworth casting process can make complicated shapes and achieves high integrity and density of microstructure. Mazda has introduced this technology originating with Ford and has built upon it to produce high quality products at lower cost by incorporating the production technology based on Mazda's original TPM (Total Preventive Maintenance) technology.

I have seen is a 6i MT with wheel covers for $17,285. No options. But with the 6's long list of standard equipment it is well above a stripper. Standard items that are options on other brands or not available at all.

My affordable is 17k but Im looking for 6 cylinder cars only, maybe if its really good deal ill get one with turbo. But 6 cylinder is must.

Thats why 21k for the 6s is too much for me

  • stretchsjestretchsje Member Posts: 700
I think limiting yourself to 6 cylinders is silly, being that an RSX is faster than most 6 cylinder cars. Engine size/cylinders isn't nearly as important as weight. Look at the current MR2 with 138hp, or the <drool> dream-car Lotus Elise.

Also, the 4cyl Mazda6 is the only one you can expect to see a turbo for, if you're interested down the line. Eventually, the 4cyl engine will be the one capable of making the most power simply because the engine bay has more physical room for modifications.

So, stubbornness aside, how 'bout a used WRX? New Mazdaspeed? Focus SVT?
  • toolman02toolman02 Member Posts: 59
You are going to be hard pressed to buy a new 6 cyl anything for 17k. The only options I see for that price are something like the Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima. If that's your price point and you won't consider a 4 cyl, you might want to look into a used car.

How about a used Maxima? Those are nice, and you could get one that's a few years old for 17k.

Stretch: I have both the stock chrome grille and the sport grille. The chrome section is screwed onto the grille just as the red strip is screwed on the sport grille. I was thinking about putting the red strip on the original grille sometime in the future, maybe. Since you're getting your's painting, it would be great if you posted a picture, so I won't have to go through the trouble to see how it looks.

6S auto: When I use the sport shift I'm experiencing jerks when moving from 2nd to 1st. This happens whether I do it or allow the car to down shift by itself. If I come to a complete stop I don't feel the jerk. Going from 2-1-2 is jerky. All gears change smoothly in fully automatic mode. What are your experiences.

But as you can see in here.....The Ford connection ain't doing any better.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I agree, the Ford connection bothers some people. I had doubts myself because of experience driving Tauruses with Duratecs. After driving a Mazda6s, I do not know how they made the engine so smooth. It pulls all the way to redline smoothly and sounds cool doing it. Those people here who own them know how cool that V6 sounds. It's addictive. I haven't heard of any problems with Duratecs in other vehicles and the Ford I owned was the most trouble free car I've had which includes an Acura, a Honda, 2 Mazdas, and a Subaru. It doesn't bother me at all.

A true Jaguar engine (do they exist anymore?) would bother me though.

Got my MP3 player and autodim mirror installed today.

MP3 player is nice. Plays bitrates up to 320Kbps (and also plays stuff sampled at low rates, such as audiobooks). Folder navigation is logical, and it can show filenames as well as ID3 info (artist, album, song name). And while I *could* be imagining this, I believe it has a slightly higher power output, because to my ears regular CD playback was slightly less cruddy than with the stock single disc head unit. I'm pleased.

The "panel" that you order with the MP3 player, by the way, is just the piece of plastic around the slot that the CD goes in. It has an "MP3" logo on the left.

Autodim mirror's cool, too, although the wire bundle is a lot more obnoxious than with a factory installation. Not a big deal -- I'll stop noticing it soon. :)

A 4 cylinder can be as good as a 6 when you're talking forced induction, but I'll stick with a V6/I6 when it comes to N/A applications. Sure a 4 cylinder can be faster, but I don't much care for hanging around redline all the time. To me, a S2000, for example, is no match for the Mazda 6s. My comparison is hp/torque curve overlap. By the time you hit 6800 rpm (redline) in the 6s, the car has surpassed its peak torque and has reached peak hp. Where's the S2000? Still catching up. FYI, these low torque, high hp 4 cylinder engines get their 0-60 times by dumping the clutch at high rpm. If this kind of performance is up your alley, more power to you. The clutch companies are drooling already. :)

If there is a mazda 6 v6 that can be found for 17k, whoever find it should let us all know so we can rush to the dealer before he comes to his senses!! :)

I wondered what my blue 6S looked like at speed, but didn't want to turn it over to any friend to fly around with me watching!

Anyone notice the wheels on the yellow 6 at the bottom of the multimedia page on that link? Very sharp!!
  • vegoenvegoen Member Posts: 82
Ya I looked into those cars, and its not stubborness I have a 4 cylinder right now, and im tired of having to go redline and wasting gas and overheating my engine to either pass someone up or beat a friend at 0-60.

Im the kind of driver who needs power real fast, and also a smooth ride with power when i need it quick. some I4's are faster in delivering power but only for a short time, redlining a 6 cylinder and a 4 cylinder is big difference.

Get my drift? So if i cant 6s for 17k ill look into used cars with 6 cylinders

And mods for 4cylinder is gonna cost me a lot more to get to the hp i want then 6 cylinder

    Nice message regarding MP3.
    Question:
How much did you pay for the MP3?
My dealer cannot even tell me the price.

Does the mp3 go instead of CD ? Are the song names apearing on the display (top of the dashboard) where the radio stations ?

    thanks much for answer...

Just wanted to let any that were worried about changing their own oil on the 2.3l, no need to worry. I just finished my 1000 mile oil change and it was no problem at all.
    1) Got oil filter cartridge at the dealer
    2) Removed plastic cover on underside of engine (6) Bolts
    3) Took out allen screw in bottom on oil filter housing (Front of engine) to drain cartridge housing
    4) Drained oil from pan
    5) Remove plastic end cap on oil filter housing. Thought I would need a special tool, but a rubber jar lid remover worked just fine. All in all, I would rank this as one of the cleaner and easily accessible oil change I have ever done.
    Hope this helps, Dave

dinu01: The patrols can't trace your detector since they are the ones emitting/transmitting the signal. The newer R/D have a lot more features/capabilities, pickup all legal radar bands, the new laser guns and screen out unwanted signals to prevent false alarms. I keep my R/D on top of my dash (held lightly on with supplied velcro) next to the storage bin like cookie01 mentioned so that I can quickly disconnect the power plug and ripped it off the velcro if I get stopped.

chikoo: CAD tools (Pro-e, SolidWorks and SolidEdge) to generate 3-D solid models have done wonders in the design engineering world. You can get most complex assembled models within a week (redundant complex parts are easily copied), obtain tighter tolerances and set it into animated motion, to indicate any fit clearance/interference problems. Better than the old drafting tables, but you still need the old engineering knowledge that you input, eliminating garbage in/garbage out.

kyler13: You're right about the S2000 no match with the 6s. I smoked one of my co-workers with a '02 at the light whenever we leave work at the same time and he fumes trying to keep up with me getting on the highway. Smoke another guy's Minicooper too.

10K is just around the corner. Ayone having problems lately with their 6? I thought I read that stretch had his CEL come on again? That would make it 106 at the other board.
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
    Spooky,

The MP3 player retails for $380.

Yes, the display at the top of the dash can show any of the following:
      Folder Name
      File Name
      Track Number/minutes elapsed
      Song Name (from ID3)
      Artist Name (from ID3)
      Album Name (from ID3)

The "display" button toggles between these.

626to6: I'm having the exact same problems with my sportshift, downshifting is terrible where I don't even bother with it anymore. Is this normal because I've never used one before. I plan on mentioning it when I take it in for servicing.

Dinu: where you been buddy? I thought maybe you already bought your 6 and were too busy tooling around in it to post here.

I need some info on tinting from you. What's a good place to get it done so it lasts and what's legal in Ontario? I want to get 35%, is that allowable for front and back? I think you mentioned that you tinted your Pro so I need your input.

The radar detectors may be illegal here but with this car I think it may be a necessity, that sunglass holder may turn out to be the best option on the car for me.

alcjew: the weather is gonna be lousy this weekend so screw the spring cleaning, all I could think about while cleaning out the garage was going out for a drive so the weather's a great excuse to not do anything but sit in my car and go. Too bad Easter Sunday is getting in the way. Hmmm, how does one go about becoming an Athiest?

skyray: Can the mp3 player, play regular CDs? or do you still have both the original cd player along with the mp3 player?

alcjew: Can we add to your smoke list a 240 Benz? I think this preppy boy might have been able to get a glimpse of my Zoom Zoom stickers in the rear reflectors.

What was your point? You trying to start somethin'? Haven't said anything about Honda in here in days.

Fact is I drive a couple of Lexus's Lexi Lexuses whatever. I have no urge to defend Honda. I'm feeling rather elite these days. You know those of us with such obvious superiority we can't suppress it.
  • aromasaromas Member Posts: 314
Gee:You have no urge to defend Honda, is this the same person who brings up the Element everytime the sales figures comes out. Didn't you say the only reason you are driving the Lexus is because your wife took your Accord. Maybe you should buy an Element now and kill 2 birds with 1 stone, you'll be driving a Honda again and it will increase their sales figures for April. If you can feel superior driving 1 of those then my hats off to you.

Your post about engineers is ignorant at best.

The complexity of today's designs, in all engineers requires the use of software. Software is an AID to engineers, it is not the engineering itself. Computer engineers and programmers are just that, they take a model and code it up so that engineers have some way to manage the enormous complexity of designs ranging from an automobile suspension to a cell phone's coding/modulation scheme. Such programs are only made with the help of real engineers....and because of computational complexity, most of the engineering wonders we enjoy today would not have ever been designed w/out the AID of computers.

Get real...you obviously no nothing about engineering or how engineers utilize computers and CAD tools.

Any feedback from people driving the 6i in the manual shift mode on the automatic? Seems there may be some rough shifting issues on the 6s auto?

I was toying with the 6s over the last few days, but it seems the 4-speed auto in the 6i may be a little more stable here in the beginning?

    Any comments?

CR finally tested the 6. It got good results but no better than the Accord (in their view). Amazingly, they weren't wowed by the handling all that much, but found it competent. But the Honda 6cyl got almost the same mileage as the 6i. And the Honda 4cyl got at least 4mpg better--close to 40mpg. The 6i AT only got 33mpg hwy. I come close to that in my 3.1L FWD GM.............Let's everyone lay off gee35. I, for one, am glad he offers different opinions. Let's face it--the Element should NOT be outselling the 6. The Element is a butt-ugly specialty vehicle that looks like a fruit delivery truck. Let Mazda consolidate 6 option packages and offer sweet lease deals (done already); the 6 will sell better...............as to probs with the manumatic, what did one expect?? Manumatics are gimmicks. The car serves 2 masters--the driver's gear preference and the computer override. The computer always wins. Get a stick!!!

But it's not my experience. Currently owning the 16" and the 17" tires, the 17" tires (which they seemed to endless complain about) handle and ride much better. The latter I can prove, somewhat unscientifically, because there used to be a section of road that with the 16's would cause the CD player to skip. Not anymore, not with the 17's. (Yes, the CD player does skip more than others, though still not bad.) Handling difference were pretty obvious too, to me, as one would expect. They corner much more confidently. The 17's let the suspension do its job.

They are noisier, but it's worth it. It's not intrusive- the 16's are Camry-like, which is too quiet in my opinion.

I think consumer reports didn't like the handling of the heavier V6 (which had the sports package, the 6i they tested did not) and blamed it on the tires, because it's certainly not the tires that are bad. I believe consumer reports reports their findings accurately, but their reasoning often isn't. They also didn't like the 4cyl for lack of torque compared to Camry. I OWN BOTH!!! and can verify, that's not really the case after break-in. My wife's '02 is an auto, though, but given that disadvantage, I think their equal. With my manual, it pulls much more strongly.

Notice their white 6s had the chrome mustache painted? Neat. Leaving to get mine done now!

Before the PRO I never had tints in any of my cars and now I just can't imagine a car without them. I got 35% on all 4 windows and the rear window.

The defogger has worked well this winter and I haven't had any issues with any of the film on the windows either. This shop does many cars, most for dealers (they had a few Odysseys from Formula Honda while mine was done - now you know where minivans get their tint from). The quality has been really good. Visibility is great in daylight and at 35% it really is unnoticeable you have tints at night.

    Here's some info:
    http://www.formulaone.com/data.html

This is the only place in Toronto where you can get it done. Call before for an appointment. It took them less than 3 hrs to do my Protege. You also gotta be really careful NOT to use your windows for 3-4 days. I locked mine.

Price-wise, you gotta haggle and tell them $250 taxes included for your whole car w/Premier film. I got $230 tax incl. for the PRO, but you have to adjust since the 6 is a bit larger and also for a price increase in the last 2 years - inflation, cost of operating, etc. Don't go to a lower-grade film. If I had to do it all over again, I would have chosen something maybe 5-10% darker, but since these films don't exist and I don't wanna make my car look like it came from J and F (think of a major intersection in the West End), 35% is still the way to go.

PS: There's also Tint King, but FX has been great so far (quality, service, price), so I can't complain.

Heritage Rd. is the first street north of 7 as you go north on McCowan. Make a right on Heritage and they're on the right hand side about 200m.

I've been busy w/exams (now finished) and since we had a few nice days, putting some more kms on the PRO. 56.500kms so far and all's good.

I've been using the sport shifter quite a bit. The car has nearly 4,000 miles on it.

Yes - if you shift from 2-1 with the revs up too high, it is jerky. Try it in a manual with similar revs showing on the tach. You'll get a very similar thing.

First gear is rather short in the 6s and isn't useful for engine braking at all unless you're going very, VERY slow. First is only for starting off or nearly-stopped situations anyway. If you wait, it'll go into first very easily. But most times you're stopping, so why not go to 2nd and let the computer drop it to 1st if you don't like the jerk?

I've never had any issues with upshifting in ANY gear. All are quite smooth even with the pedal to the floor. The car does jump like a scalded cat from 1 to 2 under full power, but it's a smooth application of power for me and something I really enjoy. Feels like a perfect shift in a manual, except you get it EVERY time.

Other than that - I've downshifted to third up around 60 on the highway repeatedly and had no issues. It's going to jerk a little because it has to - you're forcing the engine to jump 3-4,000 revs.

I just got my new 6s MT Sport last week. So far I love it, but have a couple of questions. I didn't see much in the archives, so I thought I would post.

Does the auto climate control ALWAYS turn on the A/C? I understand if it's cooling or using the defroster, but so far it always turns on when I hit the auto button, even on cold mornings. Does anyone else have experience with this?

Also the "alarm" doesn't seem to work the way I expect. I'm not sure if it is being armed properly with the different locking methods (remote, key, power lock switch). Also, if I lock it with the key in the door and then try to unlock with the remote, the alarm goes off and will only cancel if I put the key in the door or ignition. Any thoughts?

Other that these minor questions, I absolutely love this car - power, handling, refinement, ...
  • mazda6sammazda6sam Member Posts: 20
Mine does that too, regarding the alarm. sometimes when I use the remote to unlock the car it locks itself again if the door isn't opened in a minute or so. They key does definitely disarm it when it goes into the ignition.

basically that address is the address of Sherwood High School.

6 owners, please show up! we already got plenty of Protege/Miata/RX-7 owners coming!!!

    the more the merrier!
  • ruefusruefus Member Posts: 254
Yes - the ACC always turns the AC on. I believe it details the reasonning in the owner's manual.

If it's cold - hot air will blow regardless of whether or not the A/C is on.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
The Protege does the same thing. The A/C is always on unless the knob is turned to "face only".

I don't care what the reasoning is, I've never had a car that was like this. I think it's dumb. The A/C compressor should ONLY come on when a defrost or cooling setting is selected. Period.

    >>>Your post about engineers is ignorant at best.<<<

I guess getting a degree in mech. engg. and working 10 yrs into it from design to production does make one ignorant.

    >>The complexity of today's designs, in all engineers requires the use of software. Software is an AID to engineers, ..... Such programs are only made with the help of real engineers....and because of computational complexity, most of the engineering wonders we enjoy today would not have ever been designed w/out the AID of computers.

Get real...you obviously no nothing about engineering or how engineers utilize computers and CAD tools. <<<<

I still stick to my original post.
If I tell you to find out the result of 2+2 and you need a calculator for that, like many mediocre enggrs do, that is the target of my post.
Even if a bunch of talented design engineers at the worlds best Automobile company together cannot come out with a GOOD / COMPARABLE design, they are worth the indignation I wrote about.

The CAD is a tool. Yes. I agree.
But from the review, it appears that the CAD was more than a tool. IT DID ALL THE FREAKING WORK!!!
And the engineers could not come close to it when the time came to use their own brains.

This is like saying that Turbotax beats the Best CPA in getting the maximum refunds.

    Get it?
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Just because the ACC always has the AC "on", this doesn't mean the AC compressor is always running. It just means the compressor will come on if you have the temp set low enough.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I don't know how the Mazda6 works, but the Protege has the A/C compressor running even when defrost or A/C isn't selected. I know it's running because I can hear it turning on and off.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
I'm still flip-flopping between the 6i and 6s. I need a tie-breaker. I the 6i feels more balanced, but the 6s feels more substantial. On test drives, I liked the handling of the 6i but found myself wanting more power. I liked the power of the 6s but was thinking the handling could be a little better. Argh! I don't care about the extra cost of the car, or the fuel. I have done 3 back-to-back drives now. The first time I liked the 6i, the second time I wasn't so sure, the third time I think I liked the 6s better. Is there a trend here?

The sales guys are threatening to start making me buy them lunch and give THEM a car to drive.

    Any thoughts?
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
My point exactly. Regardless if you have ACC or not, the compressor only runs when it needs to. I leave my AC switch "on" all the time. The compressor never starts unless I turn the temp control towards the cold side. I suspect all cars work the same way, with ACC or not. IOW, it's not really an issue.
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
    miata10ae,

The MP3 player plays regular CDs as well. It has all the functionality of the standard CD player, it just adds the MP3 functions on top of it. (And it reads CD-RW discs; the stock CD player doesn't like most RWs.)
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Hasn't this been cleared up before? AC isn't just for making the air colder. It can also be used to dehumidify the air...even if the switch is set to a hot setting. I've had to use this many times when the windows were fogging up inside.
  • kyler13kyler13 Member Posts: 9
protege_fan: Most radar detectors have had VG2 stealth for the past 10 or so years. They should all be invisible to detection by the authorities.

As far as the A/C coming on, I was under the impression that the compressor is on regardless of temp setting when the indicator is lit. Even if you're running warm/hot air, the compressor works to dry the air when the A/C is on. I can atest to the fact that hot air will not defog a window by itself. What I find odd is that when I press the top button of the center climate control knob (the front window defroster/defogger) the A/C appears to turn off (or at least the light goes out). All other times it is on regardless of temp. I find this odd and almost like reverse logic.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
A/C means Air conditioner, not Air Cooler.

Cooling air is one the two products that the A/C can offer. The other bieng Conditioning the Air viz. getting rid of humidity and hence making it more breathable.

Is/was registration a requirement for the meet at Sherwood HS? I didn't sign up on-line but I'm planning on going.
