Am I the only one who detests ABS? It's a feature that encourages the car, rather than your own instinct, to do the driving and make decisions for you...kind of like an auto transmission. When I'm driving on icy roads I want to be able to downshift, pump the brakes at my own speed, etc.

On another note, I'm disappointed to see that manual trans cars are expected to represent only 10% or so of Mazda 6 sales. And we wonder why North American cars are all designed to be like Buicks. I think people here like to believe that they're "drivers" but in fact they'd rather be driven.

Because my brain can determine when to shift better than the computer.

But my foot cannot pump the brakes as fast as the computer.

Looks like you're trolling to start yet another ABS debate! It's as old and worn out as the "I don't like SUV's" topic. Just be assured, you are not the only one!

If you like a stick shift and don't like ABS that's fine by me and you're in luck with the Mazda6i 5 speed - three of the four configurations don't have ABS.

    The available configurations are:

    - Baseline
    - Premium
    - Premium, Comfort, Leather, Moonroof, Sport
    - Premium, Comfort, Leather, Moonroof, Sport, ABS+TCS, Airbags, Bose

Please check this forum out. It's doing a poll for the body style. I think someone will send that to mazda usa showing we are interested at the hatchback

    6 vs 03 Accord article

6 surprisingly fun to drive article

And many more. And the best part of it, it's that it has Canadian prices.

Unless ABS is offered as standard equipment, I will not pay more than $500 CDN ($335 US) for ABS as an option. I never had an ABS-equipped car. I can definitely understand you.

My Protege has no ABS; dealer wanted $900+ for it and tried insisting how good of a safety feature it is. I'd rather spend $500 on winter tires than ABS. HA HA HA!

Looks like January for the 6 debut here. I still can't get over how good the car looks.

I'm in a simliar siuation as you - I want the 6s/MT/Cloth with Side Air Bag package. You can't get it that way on the 6s/MT, or 6i/MT either. There are more choices with the AT (blame this on the American driver's preference for automatics). So, I'm faced with the decision to get it without the SAB pkg, or get the Altima 3.5SE (which I haven't seen in stock with that combo, but may be able to order).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How do you know you don't need something you never had? One drive in the rain, trying to avoid a red light runner made me want ABS on all my cars, forever.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
When the P5 came out as a 2002 model in 2001, you had to get a sunroof in order to get ABS/side air bags. They just changed the packages for the 2003 model year. So it took them a whole model year to wake up.

Nice article on the 6 vs the Accord. In my opinion, the Accord is a melted chocolate bar - bland design. The 6 is just gorgeous and sexy looking, plain and simple.

My criteria for a car are these:
    Exterior body treatment
    Value
    Handling
    Power
    Lack of NHV
    Practicality
    Long term reliability
    Cost of ownership
    Dealer service
    Dealer reputation

    I'm sure there is more....

All Mazda 6 models sold in Canada come equipped with ABS as a standards feature.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
And hence I would be perfectly fine with a 6 since I would not have to shell $ for ABS. I'm not against ABS, but will not spend $1k on it either.

Peter: You're welcome. You guys get to see and test drive the 6 2-3 months before we get them, so I would expect some posters' reviews on the car by December.

does anyone think the front of the 6 looks a little like a japanese nissan skyline, maybe thats why i like it so much?

oh and i need a good good argument for convincingthe parents to get me a manual insted of an auto, any ideas?
  • dsm6dsm6 Member Posts: 813
    cheaper. Parents like cheaper.

If you are easy on the clutch, maintenance is less. It is also less likely, in general, to break.

Also, when the battery dies, they won't have to come bail you out because you can just start it up by poppin the clutch. ;-)

thanks, but my parents are harsh, and even though they had manual they say its to distracting for me, if anyone has ever seen somethin sayin that it is less likely to crash in a manual than auto, please put that on here
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
stop better on snow by downshifting w/out touching the brakes?

If you can drive auto now, there's no reason why you should not drive a 5spd.

5spd distracting? Try changing gears and talking on a cell at the same time. Let alone, hold a drink on top of that. I can barely do it when driving a 5spd (change gears and use my cell) and I'd rather hang up. In my auto car, I use my cell and use my leg to steer while playing with the radio. Can't do that in a 5spd. NEED to pay attn at all times, or risk stalling.

So 5spd are safer IMO than an auto. It will also prevent you from daydreaming and hitting the person in front of you at a light.

The reasons you named are some for me to drive an auto. :) I can't drive, talk on the cell, and adjust the radio at the same time with a stick. :)
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Just tell em you're a automotive "purist" and they always prefer a manual transmissions. Maybe your parents will think that sounds real mature and it means you'll be a safer driver.

    Then again, maybe not. :)
  • csuftitanscsuftitans Member Posts: 215
better gas mileage; if you don't race the car all the time. For me, I would tell my wife that I will not fall asleep while driving, since I have to keep shifting gears :-) (no really, I do have problem keeping my eyes open sometimes).
  • tiredofmanualtiredofmanual Member Posts: 338
Like dinu said, a manual tranny allows you more control over the car in low traction situations, like snow. If it's rainy and I'm coming down a mountain I'll take a manual thank you very much.

Also, I would point out that driving a manual FORCES you to pay more attention. YOU have to be aware of changing road conditions, traffic patterns, the speed of traffic around you, your own speed, and your rate of acceleration/deceleration because YOU are choosing the gears, not the tranny computer.

    From the press release:

"The assembly line design for the MAZDA6 sedan is flexible enough to accommodate the addition of the sport wagon and five-door body styles with no production shutdown."

Someone speculated earlier that perhaps the lower volume wagon and hatchback would be imported from Japan, but this suggests otherwise.

Actually some cars for retail sale are already built. They have been running the line off and on all week. The first car I am expecting was actually built on 10/14.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Uh oh, that's a union built Monday car. Watch out.
  • audia8qaudia8q Member Posts: 3,138
That thought has crossed my mind...hahah
but Mazda's launch process is very detailed and almost always trouble free. They told the Ford guys that the launch was next week to keep them away...The last thing they need is any info from Ford on how to launch a product. haha

How does everyonre feel about the old I never buy the first year model. Is this considered a first year model since it has been selling overseas allready? Could there be issues because the Flat Rock plant has been tooling up and there might be new production issues?
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
If you can wait, a second or even third year product is bound to be a bit better sorted. I've got one of the first Contours built in August '94 and there were a few niggles that were changed for the '96 model year. Nothing has fallen off or was a major expense however.

The fact their making it overseas might help some, but it depends on how much effort they put into the launch here. Ford treated the launch of the Focus as more of a model change than a new product and paid for it. With all Mazda has riding on this car, I'm sure they are going to do their best effort.

I have been driving a 93 626ES built at Flat Rock
in 12/92, until it was totaled recently at 148k miles. It has been trouble free, other than maintenance issues. And no recalls.
If that is an indication, Mazda's production launch process should be ok.

I guess that's what warranties are for, to cover the early adopters.

This is a bit different from when I got my '99 Pro in Jan. '99 as the car was coming from the plant in Japan that had been churning them out for a while already (just not offered for sale in NA).

The Flat Rock plant seems to have done a good job with putting together 626s.

Note: This is not for Real!!

  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Beware of those, I think I got one of those now. :( Just alot of little quirks that cause rattles. But nothing major has gone wrong yet with it.

I am thinking about the Tribscape and Focus and how many problems they had when they first came out. That right there would be enough for me to think about a first year model.

maltb, do you know if Mazda 6 will be shown at the California Auto Show in Anaheim? Go Angels !!

The triscape didnt have anywhere the number of problems as some people on edmunds would lead you to believe....actually it has been a rather good vehicle from a mechanical standpoint. The triscape has had rather low warranty claim rates compared to other small SUV's and some other Mazda products.
The Focus on the other hand does have issues. It's too bad, from a ride and drive standpoint the car is very good.

The biggest issue that first year Mazda6 buyers should think about is features. As the 6 goes along they will add features to enhance the car. i.e. navigation, awd, etc.

Also, all mfg make running changes that usually go un-noticed. These are changes that are made due to real world warranty claims. Sometimes all the testing in the world can't match what a 3 year old and a juice box can do to a car.

No Mazda6 at Anaheim and I have no clue why other than that show is nearly a waste of time and is invisible to most manufacturers. I think I'd rather save my $5 and visit a local auto mall.

does anyone agree that it looks like a nissan skyline in the front?
  • csuftitanscsuftitans Member Posts: 215
I would think that they would at least sneak one into the show, since their HQ is like a block away; sigh. I guess I have to wait until the LA show. Thanks for the info and not making me waste my time and money to go there to find out that there's no 6s.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
about 15mi...but you are right, still close.
  • pcballa706pcballa706 Member Posts: 19
so nobody agrees with me (that the front of the 6 looks kinda like the nissan skyline that is only sold in japan and is the coolest thing in gran turismo 3 a-spec)?
