    The reviewer ends with

Kinda makes you feel sorry for the Big 3 domestic manufacturers. No sooner do they zero in on the latest top gun from Japan than somebody else comes along and moves the target.

I sort of doubt Ford is zeroing in on the 6 ! BTW, I watched Bill Ford in that first re-org speech several months ago and the only example he could cite for their planned resurgence in new product was the 6!

    buy 'em...

There was an artical at Automotive News this week about how Ford will launch its own C/D size car and leave the Taurus to fleet sales only. How the mighty have fallen...

Actually if you want a baby GT-R, look at the facelift for the Impreza WRX.

Looks like it was taken at the Henry Ford museum near Dearborn? NA press preview?
  • devil_tazdevil_taz Member Posts: 21
well.. currently, a baby Gt-r = Sentra Se-r (especially with a se-r badge at the front)

This one has a piece of news many of us will not like, if true. The hatch and wagon (with available all wheel drive) are due in a year OR SO. Sigh.

    Otherwise a great article:

I feel better knowing Mazda sent over that small army of engineers for the start-up.

The 240Sx my fav. Nissan: still sporty, but more affordable than the 300ZX.

"are you sure you're not my father??" I seriuosly doubt it. We're the same age, so unless I've been missing something... NO!

I am a Mazda fan as far as the PRO, 6, Miata and MPV are concerned. And the old Proteges > 323 < LOVE those cars!

You know I'm a balanced individual when it comes to automitive things. Well, not reaally. I like Mazda and Honda, but will not pay ridiculous prices for the later. Although an RSX still looks good!

With the assembly line running today I called three dealers to ask about price and availability. Mum's still the word on the sticker, but it looks like Massachusetts may have product in the showrooms by halloween. They said 10 to 14 days from now. Sedans only, and 4cyls only at first, from what they tell me.

that yellow hatch or wagon would be killer.....mazda better get off its collective butt in the US and get that wagon and hatch over here NOW, not in one year. One year may be too late for my next purchase.

I knew you were joking, even though I kept my reply serious. Or the other way around.

It seems to me Mazda has few dealers in the US' major cities. They're pretty good in Toronto and Montreal though.

I'm also pretty excited about the 6. If I only had the $ for one...

One other thing about 1st year cars is that ususally the 2nd year enhancments are made to options, engines, etc.

The 6 seems like it will run smoother than most first year cars. The 80's MX-6 and Probe didn't have any bad issues when the Flat Rock plant first opened.

RE: "Mighty Have Fallen". Jac Nassar is at fault for letting the car designs age, (not including Focus). He decided to concentrate on trucks, thinking they would be 70% market share by now, and that there would still be an SUV "monopoly" in Detroit.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
for driving the vendors crazy by forcing them to supply at cheap prices....look at the quality of the Focus. Good Riddance!!

Let's hope it garners more impressive recognition than car of the year in Oman !
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
It was just reported in the Times of Oman.

Hey, it beat out the MB E-class.

I'm surprised the Corolla took third. ???
  • jjpeterjjpeter Member Posts: 230
Man, thats obscure! How in the heck did you find that Mazda6s??? We'll see what comes out on top in the inevitable segement - comparo in the American mags. I'd wager it will come second to the Accord, just because Honda has woken up to the "performance" desires of the savy car buying public. But the 6 will win hands down in the beauty contest.

    I want a hatch!!!
  • yugoboyyugoboy Member Posts: 161
What the heck, a year or two down the road for the hatch and the wagon, cmon on, what the hell is going on, get these sucker's into production as soon as possible!!! The wagon and hatch would be the icing on the cake, but atleast on a positive note they did mention all-wheel drive!!! :)
  • boxfanboxfan Member Posts: 180
It says "over the next year or so," which leaves room for shorter or longer times. I've read spring 2003 for the hatch and wagon, and that the AWD wagon would come out later. So all three of those could come out "over the next year or so" but the hatchback could be a lot less than a year. That's what I'm hoping anyway. I'm guessing that Mazda hasn't even decided yet.

It's great that they have so much capacity at Flat Rock, so that if the 6 sells well, they can increase production of the sedan AND still come out with the other body styles. I was afraid that if the sedan was selling well, they'd delay making the other two in order to keep selling sedans. Of course if it doesn't sell well, they might decide not to even come out with the hatchback and wagon. Now I'm scaring myself.

Or is it like, O MAN, I gotta get me a MAZDA 6?
  • marchharemarchhare Member Posts: 44
Oman is in the middle east, south of Saudi Arabia.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
There's one thing I haven't heard mentioned yet, and that is, since the 6 is pretty-much a global model (with minor variations), Mazda would have the option of biulding cars in Japan for import to the US. This was done by Honda starting with the 2000 Accord, first made only in the US, then imported from Japan to add to the production numbers. So, if the demand is there, I suspect that Mazda would have the option of building the hatch and/or wagon (maybe the sedan too) in Japan as well as Michigan.

I mean I would go for the sedan, but 10 yrs from now when I'll be 30+, the wagon would be it.

Mazda Canada has started showing off the Mazda 6 to dealers. Here in British Columbia, that roll-out occurred on October 17 in Richmond behind the Vancouver International Airport.

Mazda made 5 cars available. Three to drive and two for show. All five were manual transmission. There are no automatics on the ground in Canada.

The three drivers were a 4 cylinder GS, a 4 cylinder GT and V6 GT (sorry to my American friends if you are not familiar with the Canadian model designations).

I was not there, but I know a number of people associated with my old man's Mazda dealership who were. Mazda also had a 2003 V6 Accord, a 2002 3.5 SE Altima and a V6 Camry for comparison purposes.

The 6 enjoyed a tremendously positive reaction from the BC dealer network. Everyone is now VERY excited to receive this car.

A friend of mine hopped in the V6 GT and took it for a mad dash on this perfectly flat piece of private property. He was incredibly impressed with the handling (apparently no worries there), the braking, and the lack of N/V/H.

He was even more impressed when he came to a skidding halt, looked under the hood and realized that he had been driving the 2.3 four cylinder and not the V6!

He reported that the 6 cylinder did have better low end grunt, but the 2.3 four cylinder is a real performer in its own right. In fact, he would take the four cylinder GT over the V6 based on bang for the buck.

He was very impressed with the quality of the interior. Said the Accord was the only car that came close in that department, but that NONE of the others even came close to matching the performance and dynamics of the Mazda 6.

A couple of other tid-bits for you. The RX-8 goes into production in April and will be in Canadian showrooms by late June. Mazda execs are also very excited about the upcoming Mazda 3, which they think will absolutely blow the competition out of the water. Finally, and most intriguing, Mazda execs are talking quietly about a "Mazda 4" coming out in the not too distant future. If I find out more about that one, I'll let you know.
  • windowphobe6windowphobe6 Member Posts: 765
They used to build three separate (if interrelated) lines there - 626, MX-6, Ford Probe - so they've got a tremendous amount of capacity, should it be needed.

Mtypex, do you realise that in reality there is virtually no Mazda independent of Ford? That FORD owns enough of Mazda that under Japanese law it can and does control it? That Ford decides who runs Mazda and can veto anything it chooses to? That Ford and Mazda are so intertwined that it is a dubious proposition that Mazda could go it alone unless another company was in joint venture with it or owned it?

Moreover, if Mazda doesn't have the financial resources to produce an Audi or BMW at half the price, then how the thunder is it supposed to buy ANYTHING at Auto Alliance? Besides, with no Ford ownership/control to worry about, wouldn't it be smarter to instead build in a US state south of Michigan (for reasons probably it is best no to go into here) like Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes and even Honda (though less south than most) have done?

Personally, I am THRILLED at the new Mazda6 and can't wait to get my hands on one. That being said, all other things being equal, I would prefer the hatch OR the wagon! (I should also add that I have no connection to Mazda nor any other automotive company)

The European Mazda6's come from Japan. I don't believe Mazda has a European factory. Though the Mazda2 (Demio) will be built in Spain, I believe., as it is based on the Ford Fiesta (a great car in its own right.)

Does anyone know whether foglights will be an option? I have seen pics with & without, but no for-sure statement on them. I am hoping they will come standard with the sport package, and they look as cool as the headlights. My gf's Alero has projector foglights and they actually work damn good, unlike most factory setups. Hopefully since they used the projector style headlights they'll carry that over to the foglights. :-D

(sorry if this seems menial to most of you, but I value little aesthetic things like that)
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
The Sport Package DOES include the foglights. See http://www.mazdausa.com for details. Pick the 6, then specifications, then printable. The package details are near the end.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
One of the four lights within each of the front clusters is a fog light. Standard with the sport package, but also available as a "Port Installed Option". It looks like you can also get an additional fog light below the bumper in the intakes...

Just one more note on the Autoalliance facility... it has been rumored that Mustang production will be moved to that plant so there is no reason for Ford to sell its stake.

Thankfully I am not in the same boat as most of you. I am dying to get my hands on a 6 but frankly I don't plan on replacing my Focus at least until July and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the hatchback will be out by then.
  • magnetophonemagnetophone Member Posts: 605
They all come from Japan, except for the Mazda2/Demio. Even the Ford Maverick (Escape) comes from Japan. The only one I don't know is where the Mazda Premacy comes from.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Ford DOES plan to assemble the Mustang at Flat Rock. Read the caption under the photo here:

    http://www.detnews.com/2002/autosinsider/0210/21/b01-615423.htm

Also, Ford has made clear to municipal officials at Flat Rock that the Mustang IS coming there.

  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Protege plant in Hiroshima in Flat Rock would be nice for the 6. Pretty solid build quality. Mazda MUST get this car right.

And BTW, why aren't you at school/work M Type X (as you like to be called)?

    I'm leaving soon > school > yey!

is being shifted from the Rouge River plant to AutoAlliance. The Rouge was slated to build the replacement Ranger and a Ranger based SUV. Who knows where that is now, as I have heard that the new Ranger is delayed until 2006 or 2008. Kind of funny that they would build a pickup at their new "green" plant.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
The Rouge is new? I thought that plant was one of the oldest in the country; they used to build Model Ts there. If they are going to build the Ranger there, I wonder what will happen with the Ranger plant here in St. Paul?
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
has just received a major overhall, making it an example plant for the 21st Century with more natural lighting, grass on the roof (no kidding) and other do-dads. St. Paul (and the other Ranger plant in Delaware) have been told that they will not build the next Ranger and no other product is scheduled. Kind of puts the writing on the wall.

    Great weather today, uh?
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
The weather is pretty smelly today. That stinks for St. Paul, that's a lot of jobs that are going to be lost. That plant in St. Paul is a pretty big complex, I wonder what they have planned for it? BTW, I thought the other Ranger plant was in NJ?
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
NJ, as I can just remember its out east.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
I read on the Atenza forum that the 6 is getting a bad rap for not being as road noise free as its' competitors. Is that real?
If it is, Mazda needs to get its act before they throw the 6 into the US market.
