The old warranty included a loaner car as well, when your car was in the shop overnight.

"It does everything well and makes no apologies for being a true enthusiast's car." - Sport Compact Car

Hmmm, a real enthusiasts car would have the latest safety features as standard equipment like the other "enthusiast's cars" that Mazda claims to have benchmarked for the 6, and not require the purchase of thousands of dollars of luxury options to get them. And before you say that most people don't want to pay for these safety features, keep in mind that it would not add that much, as ABS is normally about $400-500 MSRP and SAB usually runs about $250-300 MSRP, and the actual cost increase for the car would actually be much less. But of course then you couldn't price it like an Accord LX, which Mazda claims they are NOT competing with. Seems like Mazda is a little undecided on what they really want to do.
  • ickes_mobileickes_mobile Member Posts: 675
If Mazda's not compteting with the Accord LX (or the Taurus, Camry et al) why do they provide side-by-side comparisons of these cars with the Mazda6 on their website?
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Good point. Some of the best ideas in the world have gone bad due to indecisiveness, or flawed execution.
  • wgrwgr Member Posts: 127
The press release re pricing and options shows different combinations (ie less forcing customers into taking packages) being available than is shown on the MazdaUSA site. Which is right ? As of now, I am assuming the MaxdaUSA site is.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. To stay on topic for the hosts, I like the Mazda.
  • bean3422bean3422 Member Posts: 183
First... the web site is probably wrong. When I was waiting for the 2002 MPV information to come out, and when the web site first came out with information, it was a bit disappointed, but many things had changed in the 3 or 4 months until I actually purchased one. The web site is designed by a web programmer... in any big company sometimes the communication channels get mixed up.

Second... all of these email responses or phone responses are probably temporary "monkeys" who don't have a clue. Once again, in a multinational company like Mazda, misinformation gets spread around like a virus. Maybe it is not very professional, but it is just the way it is. (Like the bureaucracy in the government, but that is another topic!!)

Of course, I don't know why I am surprised. This is the same group that flew off the handle with Mazda 6 defenses and accolades before any reasonable tests or even very much information was available. Now, the first hint of package information has come out, and we are flying off the handle again.

PLEASE... just wait until the cars are at the dealers, until you can read the option packages on the sticker, until you have the official Mazda 6 book in your hand and read the packages listed in the back. (Even then, sometimes they change.)

This is the problem with the WWW...easy come easy go. Wait until you see the sticker yourself, then get upset when you really, really, can't get ABS as a stand alone option.

    You may be surprized.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
I interpret their response to mean that they think the Mazda web site is correct, not the Yahoo publication. No?

In Honduras, Japanese made, 2.0 AT, leather, moonroof, spoiler. Driving for a week. I'm not a real car enthusiast and can only compare to my 98 US model Camry. Some observations:

    1. Handling - much tighter feel steering and less lean on turns. Fun to drive.

    2. Wheelbase - seems to have less range far left and right. May be my illusion.

    3. Suspension - much harder than slushy Camry. Feels the road.

    4. Power - 2.0 too small for this car, but that's all that's available here from Japan. Feels unsafe passing on 2 lane roads. 2.3 NA version shouldn't have this problem.

    5. Tranny - smoother shifting. From 3rd to 4th I have to check tacometer to notice.

    6. Styling - What can I say, beautiful. I like the clear glass external light covers front and back.

    7. Interior - much nicer looking. Leather seats a little hard. More legroom in front.

    8. New (for me) Features I Like - Bottle holder in front door bins. Eye bolt for towing that screws to front frame after opening cap in front bumper. Power driver seat with manual lumbar pump. Extra storage bin in center dash. Upper/lower storage bins in center console. Audio and cruise controls on steering wheel. Separate high and low beam headlights. Courtesy lights on doors. Cables in trunk to drop rear seat backs.

    9. Features I Miss - No trunk release from interior. No aux. power port in this version.

Speaking of which, I'd like to add a power port. I've read here the NA version has one on or in the center console. Does anyone have a pic or can describe exactly where it's located? I can't find any plugged hole where it might go.

Since I'm not a regular poster on this forum, take this for what it's worth. I work in the auto industry, and it was posted a while back that Mazda was probably just flooding the market with vehicles that were similar to give the suppliers a chance to catch up. That post was almost dead on. I work for a tier one supplier to Daimler Chrysler, and when the Liberty was launched into production, I was at Toledo where they are assembled. What did I see, Liberty's, made in only 4 of the 10 or so advertised colors. I asked one of the workers, "Why only 4 of the colors?" He replied that they make most of the inital production vehicles a certain way so that the suppliers can get accustomed to the varying demands of the assembly plant. As an example, you are the supplier for the moonroof, well, DCX will send you an 4-8 week requirement for how many moonroofs you need to supply. That way, the supplier can both level his inventory and get his assembly line in order. I made a trip to Toledo about 4 months after launch, and all colors were being made with all options. So, I would say to those who question Mazda's marketing people, just give it time. The yahoo.com article seems like Mazda's real plan. They know better than to shoot themselves in the foot. They've been making automobiles for a long time, and some of them even succeeded. (ie. Protege, Pro5, Miata, and yes, the 6 will succeed)

...probably temporary "monkeys" who don't have a clue.

Be nice bean. They aren't temps and some are actually quite knowledgeable. However, imagine having to respond to hundreds a day, half of which have trouble collecting their thoughts. There are always two sides...

    Congratulations!

Thanks for the quick and concise review - please post some pictures as well!
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
After looking over the Yahoo article and the Mazda web page, they appear to now be the same. The only difference is that the Yahoo article does not mention that there are other options or packages tied in to the options at the bottom. The Mazda site does not mention this either, but you find out when you click on the option.

For example when you build your own and click on the $400 ABS/TRAC to add it to your vehicle a pop up tells you that you need to add $4900 worth of options to get ABS. The Yahoo article does not have pop ups.

This leads me to believe that the Mazda site is the correct one (even though they both list the same options at the same prices)

Hopefully Mazda will loosen up and correct this as many people have already mentioned.

I thought it would be nice to post this link to a match-up between the Mazda6, the Honda Accord and the Mitsubishi Galant on the Montreal based newspaper LaPresse. Unfortunately, the article is in French. Perhaps once I have finish reading it, I will translate the conclusion.

Use the 'Languages' link on google.com or the feature at babelfish.altavista.com to translate the link.

EDIT: Odd, for some reason, both services fail to translate the second half of the article!
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
... doesn't mince words. If the Accord (Agreement) is cnosidered ugly, but the writer softens it up, the subtlety is lost on the software - and it'll call a stick a stick ;)
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
BTW, watch out - the hosts have been iron-fisted lately, and one of my posts pointing out the humour in a French-English translation at google was deleted as being 'offensive to the sensibilities of a certain nationality'. Cut me some slack, really!
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
the yahoo options packaging specifies the dependency, if any, to any other option.

I think Dave is correct. Give Mazda 4-6 months. Then one will have everything as desired (ala Yahoo website)

Using my knowledge of French, here it goes. I did focus on the 6.

    The reviewers noticed:

    Mazda 6:

    *Sporty styling
    *Firm/NOT cushy ride
*Firm, but comfy seats that be well-adjusted
*Were surprised to find out that Ford gave Mazda engineers a free-hand in designing this car, not forcing it to use the dreaded Ford parts bin (and the "quality" associated w/it)
*HVAC system is too low; requires to look down and not see the road
*0-60mph/0-100km/h: The 4cyl Accord was only 2 tenths of a second faster than the 2.3L 6!!! So much for what we heard before.
*Most sporty and most fun to drive of the bunch. The car asks to be driven. Good to hear that!
    *Standard ABS and traction ctrl.

    Galant:

Is better suited to be compared to the Sonata and Malibu (read a class below). The Galant will only be chosen by the budget-conscious people. It seemed to imply it's not as refined as the Accord/6. They also called for a revised suspension. But it is cheaper.

Accord: The most "welcoming", high-quality, well-made interior. They LOVED it! It's also available right now. Lacks originality and agressiveness in styling. Really? So I wasn't the only one dreaming of Buicks then after looking at the new Accord. Good! As far as the driving dynamics go, the Accord is the best at taking care of its passengers.

So the 6 is a larger 2001+ PRO ES. Great to hear that!

    Zoom-Zoom? You bet!

A request for the Mazda 6 fans:

I am trying to put together a list of all the 2003 model-year wheel covers and wheels, with photos if possible. I'm in the business, and I do this every year and distribute it to other hubcap dealers. I've seen plenty of photos of the Mazda 6 alloy wheels, but none of the US market (16") wheel covers. If any of you can produce a photo, it would help me out if you could post it here, or email it to me A_L_Hubcaps@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance for any help.

    windowphobe6 (or anyone else),

Anyone know which automatic transmissions will be used on the I4 and V6 Mazda6? I think I heard Jatco for the V6 and NOT the Ford I4 from the 626, but anyone know additional details?

Coming from a 626 I'm obviously interested in what they're going to put in the 6.

My guess is (for either I-4 or V-6 engines)

    1. Mazda6
    2. Accord
    3. Altima

Given the recent small sedan comparo, a Hyundai may crack the Top 5. GM, Ford and DC will be nowhere to be found...
