Flat Rock has now begun to ramp up Mazda6 Sport Wagon production - they made 55 Sport Wagons this past week. They'll be fully ramped up around the official Job 1 date of March 1.
The official Job 1 date for the Mazda6 Sport was Feb 2. However, they had begun ramping up production a few weeks prior to the Job 1 date. Mazda6 Sport production is now fully ramped up (they made more Sports than sedans last week). As such, they're starting to ramp up the Sport Wagon now.

My neighborhood Mazda dealer said the first Sport Wagons would appear there in early April, the first hatchbacks in a week or so. Both will definitely appear at the Greater Twin Cities Auto Show which starts March 13.
If you go to GTCAS take some pictures. I'd go but its alittle far from OKLA. March will go by real slow now that I know my wagon won't be here till april still think it going to be worth the wait.
i read on the japanese auto business site nippon automotive news that the mazda 6 wagon production will be delayed again but that the hatch will proceed as planned. has anyone heard corroborating evidence of this news release?
No, as I mentioned, Flat Rock made 55 Sport Wagons last week and are starting to ramp up production as per normal. Because your source is Japanese, they could be referring to something over at Hofu plant II, but I haven't heard anything lately from them and they've been producing all three Mazda6 bodystyles for two years now.
More inventory means more incentives. The wagon with cash back or low interest is a great value. I haven't seen the new Subie's yet, but from the photos, I still think the 6 wagon has nicer lines and hands down better front end, dash, and interior.
actually i've already given up and am on my last legs. i just hope they're not too numb to stand on as the mazda showroom where i bought my p5 (since sold) is just down the street. ow.
Can anyone tell me what the pricing is going to be? This seems like the perfect car to replace my 94 Accord wagon, but I assume that since they'll be new and in demand that I'll have to pay MSRP if I want one this year.
Your local supply/demand situation will govern, but my guess is that there will be a short, few-month period of MSRP-to-small-discounts, followed by aggressive discounting (few hundred over invoice) similar to the M6 sedan.
This car is a good value - it just is a year late to market and will suffer as new models with more advanced technology and more up-to-date features appear from Subaru, VW, and others. If the car suits you, I don't see how you can go wrong.
It does sound like a great car for me. I wonder how much more the wagon is going to cost over, say the sport sedan (I assume the wagon will have the same V6 engine and stuff as the sedan)?
An MSRP of around 25K loaded sounds like a great deal. I doubt you'll see discounts for a while. When the Accord and Cammry wagons were produced they where hard to find and produced in limited numbers. I imagine Mazda will do the same if 3 styles have to be produced on the same assembly line. Anyone have inside numbers on planned production counts?
We just got the official pricing on the wagon a couple weeks ago, so as we get closer to the cars being shipped I suspect mazda will post them for the mazdausa website...I mentioned a few post back that we are expecting our first wagon the last week of march...Your local dealer has the ability to tell you when their first car is expected.
I'm not in the dealership today, so I'm doing this by memory.. but I know I'm close. Also the prices include the destination charge of $520 but no additional options.
MSRP 5 door 'i' model (manual trans) $21,315 5 door 's' model (manual trans) $23,415
Here goes Mazda again with the stupid bundling of options. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would assume that a majority of the wagon buyers are going to be families, and families typically put a premium on price & safety. In order to get side & curtain airbags, I have to also get the Bose & Moonroof! Sorry Mazda, but you just lost a sale. I'm 6'4", so practically any car with a moonroof is scratched off my list. I'm also not going to settle for not having side airbags when my loved ones are in the car. I guess I no longer have to wait for the wagon to hit the lots, I can go ahead and purchase a different vehicle. Thanks for the dissapointment. Maybe in the future Mazda won't try to pry extra profits out of the consumer in the name of safety. At least they made ABS standard.
I've been anticipating the 6wagon for about two years now, trying to get my current car (just shy of 200k miles) to hang on in the meantime. Well, it appears to be nearing the end of it's useful life and I depend a LOT on it. So after seeing probable pricing on the 6wagon and knowing I'd have to wait for incentives I decided to make the purchase decision, even though the 6wagon is going to be out in about a month.
However, Mazda still got my money, just not as much as it would have with the 6. I actually went for a Protoge5 because it's a great car in its own right, although smaller and less refined than the 6. But I was able to get it for about 1/2 the cost with all the current incentives & negotiation room available, which was $13.5k for a very nicely equipped version.
Believe me, I have a lot of faith in Mazda and I really like the automobiles they produce, but the wait times that have plagued the 6 hatch & wagon are utterly ridiculous. Who knows, I may trade up in a few years and purchase a used 6wagon (or a new one if really good discounts at that time). Anyhow, I'm sure I'll still be checking out the 6wagon/hatch boards just to see how you all like your new wagons/hatches. It's surely been a long time coming!
I know this is not really an apples to apples comparison so please forgive me. It's rear wheel drive, extremely powerful, a gas hog, more expensive, bigger, and a dodge product , but it sounds like the v6 models will be of a comparable cost and power output. For those shoppers looking at the 6 wagon because its larger then the p5 or impreza, it seems like this car could be comparable. These same shoppers are often those looking at the $30k legacy turbo, v70, etc. For them, the $30k, 340hp, rear wheel drive magnum might be something to look at.
I like the 6 wagon alot, but I'm afraid it might be slightly underpowered like other Mazda products. I personally have an 03 mpv and know people with other mazda products. Its seems like most people, including the auto press agree, that mazda products are all extremely well balanced but leave you wanting just a little more go.
i don't know if you visit this site or forum regularly, but you are facing the exact same dilemna as me.
i have been waiting for the subaru legacy GT wagon to come out, as well as the mazda 6 wagon, and the dodge magnum (i was also waiting for the dodge kahuna, but it'll probably never happen--too bad).
i like big V8 powered cars, so the magnum is great, but it's got a kind of cheap-looking interior which REALLY puts me off. and fuel economy is only so-so. also, since it rains a lot where i live and i snowboard, RWD is not really an option, so i'd have to factor in the additional cost of AWD. a 3.5L V6 AWD magnum would be a happy choice.
the subaru legacy turbo wagon is nice inside with chrome touches, good leather, and the best available car stereo you can buy today (Mackintosh), but it's too pricey. it's very sleek looking though, and it would blow the other two wagons away on the road. hmmph!
the mazda 6 wagon, as my last choice, is not the best in any category. as the previous owner of a P5, i am familiar with their barely adequate power, but the hp and torque ratings for the 6 are alright. nothing to get excited about compared to the other two wagons, but adequate.
the mazda 6 interior is also okay, but not as deluxe as the subaru and not as roomy as the magnum. but price-wise, the mazda 6 comes in much less than the other two, and that, plus mazda's good handling characteristics, is making me lean towards getting a mazda 6 wagon.
I wanted one when I got my '99 Pro LX (but they weren't available in the NA market). My wife has one (an '03 P5). I'd get one of the remaining ones myself, but I'm too attached to the upgrades I've made to my Pro's audio system (and my Protege is still doing quite well). Besides, I can always borrow my wife's car when I need to haul bulky items.
However, if I were in the market for a new car, it'd likely be the P5 (seeing as how I'm one of the few who don't fit into the new 3's). I like the looks of the 6 wagon, but at nearly 2X the price of the P5 (assuming I could find one to my liking), it'd be a hard sell.
Maybe demand may be great for the first month, but the incentives will be coming shortly. My unscientific analysis for this occurred at the Chicago Auto Show. I got right into the 6 wagon and the 2005 Outback. There were no huge crowds around these cars compared with other rather ordinary cars.
I totally agree on being annoyed about Mazda gouging just to get the side airbags. I've been waiting for this car for a year now and am now willing to wait until summer for the Outback. They seem to have taken a lesson from Ford.
FYI for those in the DFW area: Mazda USA confirmed to me that the 5-door and Sport Wagon will be on display at the Dallas Auto Show next week.
For those cross-shopping the Subaru wagons, a post I saw on a Subaru board said that the new 2005 Legacy Wagon would be there but it didn't look like the new Outback version would be on display.
I think when you compare the competition (audi, vw, subie, used bmw) with 6 cyl and comparable equip, the prices are pretty reasonable, especially with the expected incentives. I'm going to wait.
Mazda lost me long ago on the wagon when they dropped the 4-cyl version. I am still hopefull they will add it back though. I am in no hurry to buy, so I still may wind up going that way. They have improved their option packages on the 6 sedan I have noticed.
FWIW the wagon I am interested is a 4 cyl manual tranny with ABS and no sunroof.
If you are worried at all about saftey, don't even consider a 4 cylinder in this car. I have a Legacy with 4 cylinder (5 speed) and it is a dog. I won't get a haul-worthy car this size again w/o a six.
I wouldn't get too mad at them for bundling options. Yes, it sucks that saftey had become a luxury item, but these cars are quite affordable compared to the competition. Many cars that don't bundle come "pre-bundled" from the factory anyways--it becomes nearly impossible to find exactly what you want (spartan with saftey features) w/o something extra like Bose or homelink...
The current Accord wagon and Camry wagon are much too expensive for my tastes. (Pilot and Highlander) What else is there? The Subaru is a nice option...
Actually I do want the 4-cylinder, and I am concerned about safety. Any manuever that requires more power than the 4-cyl has is a manuever that is most likely unsafe to begin with.
I have a 4-cyl minivan right now that weighs more than the Mazda 6 and has less power, and if has more than enough get up and go.
is not having enough power to merge onto a freeway with 4 or 5 people and a ton of luggage on board! I'd rather have the power to avoid problems. With a mini-van or SUV and the higher center of gravity, you can pull a stupid maneuver that will flip the car with any size engine. Subie right now IS the only alternative wagon. (I wouldn't even consider Ford's other ugly offerings: Focus and Freestyle).
The 4-cylinder Mazda 6 (with a manual tranny) is as fast as some models of Corvette (late 70's) so I would not worry about power to merge on a freeway.
Mazda doesn't use an official "release" date. Whenever it gets to the dealers is when it's available. I believe the wagon is in production now and should be arriving at dealers within the next month. I doubt it will be past the end of April.
Hey Rich, got any better info than that, for arrival dates?
My dealer shows my cars birthday as March 10th and showing a deliver date as 1st week April. And thats down here in OKLA. So they should start showing earlier up north you would think anyway. After two years of waiting whats another couple of weeks.

Hey Rich, got any better info than that, for arrival dates?
1) Is S-Plan pricing a good deal for the Mazda's(It looks to be right around invoice from looking at fordpartner.com)?
2) what have folks been getting out of their M6 V6 sedans? This seen to be a slight compaint on the edmunds customer reviews.
3) What would be the usually time frame for Mazada to start offering incentives on the sports wagons (assuming sales are average)?
thanks for the info
