My 98 F150 also has a bad vibration @55-75 mph, dealer has been great, new ring & pinion, driveshaft, and Ford said put in a new transmission, still have problem truck has 24000 miles on it Ford is now buying it back and I will get a 2000 F150 with the same options I have for 2500 difference. Good Deal???
  • lwittorflwittorf Member Posts: 96
I feel that is to much dfference for one year pu
when you have had so much trouble with it. I have been dealing with a fleet mgr at Gus Johnson ford in Spokane and he told me there is only 240.00 difference in the cost between the 99 & 2000 I can take my pick. I would say when they buy it back find a dealer who will sell for 100-200 over cost and buy that way.
  • lvstanglvstang Member Posts: 149
I think you have to factor in miles and the fact it's a '98 not a '99. I think it's a heck of a deal and Ford tried hard to make you happy. I'd go for it. Good luck with whatever you decide.
  • lwittorflwittorf Member Posts: 96
I am sorry I have to agree with lvstang I was thinking it was a 99 for the 98 it is a pretty good price. the only thing I can say is I was quoted 26,840 plus tx& lic for a 2000 so if that is about what you are going to pay it is real good but if they are trying to sell for full msrp then you might do a little better.
  • caddprocaddpro Member Posts: 20
The price sounds good to me too if it is a supercab, cause you 4th door, 4w ABS discs and hopefully no door crack.

shimmie: well it depends where it's coming from
rear wheels and back-end bounce can be caused by out-o-balance, difference in air pressure, flat spot on tires (bad problem on pickups because of rear wheel lockup before anti-lock brakes), and a remote chance could be if you have a limited slip axle, try changing the oil and make sure you use a LS rated oil or add the friction modifier recommended by our friends at Ford. also as a tire shop manager for 11 years, even the best tires have to be re-balanced after 1500 miles or so, centrifugal force reshapes the radial bands and changes the balance.

I need some help! Am looking at a 2000 Ford 150 Styleside, super cab, sb,with towing pkg, 5.4 V-8 engine. A dealer has quoted a price of $24,995.
What does anyone think about this price? I need to get over visualizing myself as a lamb sitting on a stool with someone preparing to shear. Basic rookie at this stuff.
  • kretchkretch Member Posts: 1
Lloyd, Go to www.edmunds.com and price it out with the options on the truck if it's more than two or three hundred over the invoice price you might want to shop around. Try this approach. Decide on what options you want and price it. Get the fax number of several dealers in your area(call and ask they'll gladly give it). Fax each a copy of what you want with detailed information on the options you would like. Tell them the price you are willing to pay and give them a fax number to fax back or a email address to respond to. Never give your home or work number or you'll end up playing the sales game again. A friend of mine tried this approach recently and received 4 responses from 7 fax's sent. She ended up using the multiple responses to get her chosen dealer to come down another $100 from what she said she was willing to pay.

I have a friend who works for a Ford dealer. He said to go to the closest dealer and offer invoice. If he said no, go to the next closest dealer and offer the same thing. Keep going until you get our deal. You probably will not have to go to more that 3-5 before someone says yes. I like Kretch's idea and plan to do that as well. I am waiting for the F-150 crew cab to come out, though. Anyone know of a posting area for that yet?

    Folks;

I am waiting on a Y2K F-150, SC, SB, 2WD, XLT. Anyone know a source for nerf bar type running boards, and tonneau (hard, ie, Leer) covers. Have had a price of 199 for the nerf's and 599 for the leer tonneau installed from a local dealer. Can anyone offer advice as to whether these are good deals?

    Thanks,

    Ed

I just got a SlimTop ($389+shipping) from www.eastcoastcutoms.com for my Y2K flairside very flat, it has a 1/8" lip that lays on the rail. The only thing I don't like about it is that the latches are inside, so you have to open the tailgate to open it. Took about 30 minutes to install, getting it painted to match this weekend

I started #102. Thanks for the misc. responses. I have not taken it anywhere yet but wanted to change the vibration from 55-75 mph to 55-95 mph (had to know if it would smooth out or not). The weird thing is this...one minute I feel like I am going to get rattled out of my seat and the next second the wheel stops vibrating, the truck gets smooth, then it will go right back at it again. I've really been paying close attention lately and noticed that it will sometimes also vibrate between 40-45 mph. Im thinking this is going to be a long complicated issue once I get it to the shop, unless someone else here has a miracle cure?
  • lloydw2lloydw2 Member Posts: 8
I previously poste #114 (see above). A rather poor job on this. After doing some homework, my question is: Do you take the invoice price of the truck and add option prices to that? Also, each option lists 2 prices. Is the lower price of the option (say $931 for auto trans) the invoice price of the option?

So, coming up with an invoice price of $19,084, do I add the following options I want: $680 (5.4 v8), $931 (auto trans), $340 (tow pkg), $125 (slid rear wind).

This comes to $21,403. Is that how you figure this? Is that figure the invoice price and then I negotiate with the dealer for "how much over invoice".

    Any comments greatly appreciated!

My F150 XLT 4.6 ,auto, 3.08 rear end, extended cab also has a vibration at 38-42 mph. It seems to be in the back wheels. Carried truck back to the dealer to balance tires at 500 mi, did not solve problem. Truck now has 3700 mi. Slight vibration at 55-75 mph. Any suggestions?

Yes the lower number is the invoice price, don't forget to add $640 for shipping,(I have heard it is going up to $665, but haven't confirmed) that is the same for MSRP and Invoice. You must be looking at a 4X2 for a base price of $19,084 because the 4X4 base is $22,322. You might want to check out www.driveoff.com Don't worry you don't have to buy, but you can go in their autolibrary,
select your vehicle, add the options you want and then print out a window sticker that will show MSRP and Invoice prices plus everything you will get on the truck including standard equipment. Pretty neat, and you can juggle options around etc. Once you have decided on exactly what you want, looks like you have, and got your invoice price, head for a dealer and talk to the Fleet manager (you will do better there). Some folks are sending faxes to several Fleet Departments, telling them what they want, and what the dealer will sell it to them for, then bounce one off the other. Hope this helps, Good Luck and let us know how you make out. What part of the country do you live in? If you are in the Colorado area I can put you in touch with a Fleet guy at Courtesy Ford in Denver who will treat you right.
  • bobh12bobh12 Member Posts: 140
    Messed up on two things:
1- I never answered your basic question- Yes add the prices of the options to the base price of the truck, plus shipping,to get total price. The base price of the truck only includes standard equipment.

2- I gave you the wrong URL for driveoff.com, it is http://driveoff.com sorry for the confusion

I came up with an Invoice for your truck $22,437.
I assumed it was a 4X2. The biggest difference I see in you numbers versus mine is you did not include $665 Destination Charge, and the 5.4L in the 4X2 Invoice is $1318, not $680, that is the price for that engine in the 4X4. Don't forget the
"XLT Preferred Equipment Package",it is $1003 Invoice, then they disount it $1003, so it's free!! Code 507A includes Air and 4 wheel ABS Discs I think. Oh Yes, MSRP was $25370. Hope I have helped and not confused

I just purchased a 99 XLT with the 4.6 L.. I bought this engine because of fuel economy, but I did drive the 5.4L and almost wish that I would have purchased that one instead. It has mucho power compared to the 4.6L.. I am not saying the 4.6 is not a good engine, but I just find it rather sluggish compared with the 5.4 but I guess that is to be expected. I guess you have to decide where your priorities are, and I heard that the 4.6 gets a good 5 MPG better than the 5.4, thus my decision, but I do miss the power !
  • abucsabucs Member Posts: 9
I have just ordered my 2000 F150 xlt with the 5.4L 4spd Auto and 3.55LS. Gas milage was a big concern for me as well. However, for y2k the milage on the 5.4 is the same as on the 99 4.6, so I antied up and got the bigger V8. When I figure my weekly milage I will probably be using an additional gallon or so of gas. Well that translates to 1 to 2 dollars per week. Yes just a dollar or two for all that extra power. Now when it snows/wet freeze, or I'm at the beech or in the mud I will feel much better about my ability to handle these conditions due to the Limited slip. My larger engine will proove its value when towing my boat through the texas hill country, we've got some pretty steep grades around here. Finally,I'm gonna give you my personal feeling about trucks, SUVs etc. Around here we get freezing iced over streets in the winter. We are subject to anual tornados. Flash flooding is also common in the texas hill country. I like the idea of haveing a vehicle where I can get my family and personal belongings out of harms way if I have to. And a hauling machine to take care of any clean up afterwards. Now dont get me wrong, 99% of the time our wheather around here is just fine and dandy and I'm not pretending my 2 wheel drive is a monster 4 wheeler with winch and 9 inch lift kit. I'm saying that when other cars are stuck or limping along I can hop that curve or get on that wet grassy side of the road and safely continue on my way. I may also volunteer to move/tow a stranded motorist out of the way. I like the idea of being self sufficient out on the road. And yes all this does come at a price. If I truly wanted maximum fuel economy I would get a car or mini truck. Well I've had both and am now in a position were I prefer some well placed truck muscle at the seat of my pants. One last note, look at the fuel milage on a new ford ranger and then on a new F150 now figure your weekly travel milage. Divide your miles per week by the price of gas in your area. Do this for both trucks and you'll see maybe a 2 to 5 dollar difference in weekly operating cost. Yes it adds up at the end of the year but you can find ways to break even. Take your lunch to work once or twice a week instead of going out. One less diet coke per day. You get the picture. Remeber that raise you got last year or that tax refund you expect to get. Mentally set aside 1 or 2% of that for your additional fuel consumption and you will never notice it. But you will have one of the biggest badest vehicles on the road today, the Ford F150. Ok, Ok the chevy and dodge guys get the same benefits. Anyway I'd like to hear from others out there who feel the same way.
    thx,
    Abucs

I too ordered a 2000 XLT, I drove a 4.2v6 & 4.6v8 and opted for the 4.2 V6. With NO load there was almost no difference, both spun the tires at launch, so I think 5.4 has better middle RPM or passing power. With the initial cost, gas and insurance for a V8. I saved the $631 engine cost and got another $540 in freebies (Keyless entry, CD Radio, 255 Tires and 3.55 axle). So the 4.6 V8 would have been $1171 more or $1858 for the 5.4 V8. The 4.2v6 has 25hp more than my 92 Explorer 4.0 and I fugured the F150 would pull my boat better or atleast as good as my Explorer which weighs 1500lbs more.

I'm trying to find out what MSRP (Manufacturers
Suggested Retail Price) really means. When trying to educate yourself when it comes to buying a new Ford XLT, all the talk is the % over invoice price. That is the way to go, I'm sure.

So what about the MSRP? Why is it on the car. Is it an inflated price to "nail" people who are unaware? Is it a sham? Is it tantamount to the WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation)?

This dealer keeps referring to MSRP, even though invoice price has been discussed.

Can anyone shed any light (bottom line stuff) on this? Tx.

I ordered an F150 2 weeks ago and was told by the dealer that it will take 8 weeks for delivery. Earlier posts indicate that trucks with the Sport Group are going through a delay in production. I ordered the Off Road Package and am wondering whether this option is subject to delay as well. Can anyone tell me if the 8 week time frame is accurate? Thank you.
  • cajun17cajun17 Member Posts: 15
I ordered an F-150 XLT styleside S/C, 4.6L, auto, 3.55 ls diff, single cd, keyless, etc. After being on "hold" for 4 weeks, I was told it would be another 4 weeks before it would arrive (Nov 22). 8 weeks total. The reason for the hold was that Ford is running short on the automatic transmissions for the 4.6L engine (the 5.4L uses a different transmission). Did you orded the 4.6L? If so, maybe that is the reason for the 8 week delivery time.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the two automatic transmissions, anyway?
  • caddprocaddpro Member Posts: 20
The MSRP is the sticker price! Invoice price is close to what the dealer pays Ford for the vehicle. Before you walk onto a dealer's lot, you should already know both or have a print-out of what the base invoice cost is and the options you are interested in. www.edmunds.com (http://edmunds.com/newtrucks/2000/ford/)seems to have the most accurate and up to date info. Be sure to read the info on "Dealer Hold Back" which is 3% of the MSRP for Ford vehicles. In the Atlanta area, don't pay more than $100 for special order and negotiate from there for on the lot trucks.
  • lloydw2lloydw2 Member Posts: 8
So basically, am I correct in assuming that MSRP is a sham, applicable for people over 65 from Pasadena?
  • bobh12bobh12 Member Posts: 140
    lloydw2.
MSRP is what the dealer WOULD like to get for the vehicle, but in most cases doesn't. The exception is an extremely popular vehicle that is hard to get, the old "supply and demand". I have heard the new Excursion at some dealers is selling for MSRP PLUS $4000!!! Don't know that for a fact though.
Remember hearing when the redesigned Vett came out a few years ago they were selling for above MSRP. All it is to me is a ref point, I always start at Invoice and go from there. My dealer called me today and told me my y2k F-150, XLT Supercab, Sport 4X4 has been built and should be delivered in a week. I am paying Invoice.
  • bobh12bobh12 Member Posts: 140
stan11 Don't know of any reason why a 4x4 Off Road would be held up, they are very popular and Ford builds a lot of them, unless as was mentioned they are short on some parts. 8 weeks doesn't really seem out of line. I have been told 8 weeks at times and have had it in six, so maybe the dealer is being conservative, or maybe he has an allocation problem. See Topic 1166 and go back several posts for info on dealer allocations.

Cajun17 Don't know the real difference in the two transmissions, but would guess the one for the 5.4L is beefier to handle the increased torque. Just a guess. By the way I know they built one Sport 4X4, MINE, dealer called today, told me it was built, should see it in a few days. Good Luck to you folks

I just thought I would post this and it might help someone else out in shopping/buying a new truck.

I've been casually looking at trucks for about 3 years now and started shopping and looking intensely back in May. Edmunds.com has been a huge help with the invoice prices and the topic list. Thank you Edmunds!

4x4 and King Cab were my main requirements. The more accessories the better.

I'm particular to Fords but I kept an open mind when shopping. I test drove Chevy, Dodge and Fords.
I was impressed with the gadgets and gizmos in the Chevy, plus engine power and a very roomy back seat for a King Cab. But leaned away from the Chevy because the lack of the 4th door. If it had a 4th door I just might have bought it.
The Dodge I test drove was really nice. Loaded with everything that I wanted. Very roomy interior too. My biggest concern with the Dodge was dependability. I've heard bad things. My neighbor has one and his fuel pump went dead at 60K. The mechanic that fixed it said all Dodges fuel pumps die at 60K. They had to remove the fuel tank to install the fuel pump. Total cost was around $800.00.

Both the Chevy and Dodge had larger interiors than the F-150. Chevy's color selection was much better than Ford or Dodge. Chevy and Dodge had better cupholders. But who really cares about cupholders.

Sunday I bought a 2000 F-150 XLT Supercab 4x4. Loaded! Harvest Gold (hides the dirt) Keyless entry, split bench w/pwr drvrs seat, 5.4 V8, 3.55 LS, Towing Group III, Off Road package, cab steps and more. I got it for $300 over invoice. This is my first truck and I'm a happy man!

The invoice on Edmunds was right on the money. I missed something in my calculations so there was about $100 difference from the dealers invoice. I called the dealer on the phone and asked who the manager was that day (Sunday). I found the truck that I wanted on a Sat. night. I walked in Sunday morning and showed the Manager Edmunds.com printout and what I calculated to be the invoice and offered $300 over it. He test drove my trade-in and talked me down a couple of hundred on my trade. Which I figured he would do anyway so I had asked high on my trade. And that was it. Pretty painless.

Once again, Thank you Edmunds and all those people who have posted useful info here!

Wondering what the difference is between 4x4 and 4x2. I know the 4x4 certainly sits higher, and perhaps rides slightly rougher. But as I prepare to get my new 2000 Lariat model, I don't know enough to decide between the two. Any help?

    goodijr,
    Congratulations on one fine truck!!!
  • stan11stan11 Member Posts: 12
Thanks for the response. I too ordered the 4.6L, but opted for the 5-speed manual. I'm trying to time the delivery so I have ample time to sell my Tacoma without the pressure of having to accept a low offer.
  • pizzadudepizzadude Member Posts: 35
    Zaine:

The differences between the two are pretty simple: 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive. The two wheel drive is rear wheel driven. You are correct, the 4x4 sits a bit higher and probably has a stiffer suspension up front. The 4x4 is going to be heavier: a little less gas mileage. But depending on where you live, in the winter, i would not want a 4x2...personally i would not even consider a 4x2 truck...i like to do a bit of offroading, so the 4x4 gets you out of places 4x2 might not. But, if you are looking to keep the price low, you will save on the 4x2. I just got my 2000 F150 XLT; 5.4L, 4x4, 3.55LS, off road package, tow package, supercab. I absolutely love it.

If you go with the 4x2, GET THE LIMITED SLIP!! I can't stress that enough. Without it, you will always be stuck. If you try to drive up a 2% grade of wet grass, you will not move an inch. So consider that when you purchase.

    Good luck!

Good Luck on your delivery buddy! I have a 4x4/sc/xlt/4.6l/5 spd on order too, and it's been 9 weeks !!!! Evidently my truck is sitting in a rail yard somewhere in Norfolk (VA) waiting for a ride. The dealer keeps telling me that Ford is having problems getting railroad transportation for their vehicles. I'm getting a bit disgusted...
  • caddprocaddpro Member Posts: 20
I ordered mine on 9/13, was first told delivery on 10/25, then 10/30. Now "They Say" 11/3. I heard 3 different reasons why transportation is a problem. 1 said the trucks don't come by rail, 1 said they accidently put my special order in with the rest of the pack, the manager told me the flooding in North Carolina was causing the delays.
All BS I think. If UPS can keep up with a $5.00 package at every stop, why can't Ford keep up with a $25k truck.
  • bobh12bobh12 Member Posts: 140
Those of you that are waiting, see http://fordnews.com for an article on the Cleveland Engine Plant Fire and Transportation Delays. I guess I was really lucky, my y2k F-150, Supercab XLT Sport 4X4 was built last week and arrived at my dealer yesterday. (Denver) Of course there is an ugly side to the story, I ordered on 25 June and had DORA on 26 June, but there have been tons of delays on Sport 4X4, seats have different fabric than the rest of the F-150 XLTs and that appears to have been the problem. Good Luck

I am cuurrently looking for a F150 x-cab flareside short bed 5.4 and I am undecided as to a 99 or y2k I am looking at buying something on the lot vs. a special order and need some pricing guidelines. A 4x4 would be nice but price and insurance are an issue please help.

ORDERED 5.4 MOTOR HOPE MILEAGE IS AS GOOD AS YOU SAY THANKS FOR ALL INFORMATION
  • pizzadudepizzadude Member Posts: 35
I went with the Y2k model. I started looking early August, but I was too picky and couldn't find what i wanted on a dealer's lot...plus they just weren't dropping the prices down at that time so I just decided to special order what i wanted. I got a F150XLT 4x4, s/cab, flareside, 5.4L, off-road pkg, tow package, 3.55LS, remote keyless, capt.chairs, CD player. The sticker MSRP was 31900 and after i "wheeled and dealed" i got them down to 27200. I forget what i had calculated for invoice, but Edmunds.com was really accurate. I'm in Pennsylvania, so I don't know how much that will affect pricing. Good luck finding a nice '99 at this point though..if you do, you should do well on pricing. There are no real changes for 99 to 00..the overhead console is handy, so is the driver side handle. I'm 5'10" and still have to jump pretty good to get in! Gotta love it!! As far as insurance, mine is 200$ cheaper than my '94 Ranger that i traded.

Hope this helps out..anymore detailed questions, i'll be happy to share! By the way, i only have 140 miles on the truck, but so far it's very cool...it sure is a CHVYKLR as far as I'm concerned!

Thanks for info I just spoke to a dealer today and he is trying to sell a 99 sport 5.4 tow/pk flareside cptns chrs rear slide window no bedliner 3.55 ltd slip 4x2 for 23,600 Good Deal or Not? I also looked at another website (driveoff.com) and it seems like I can get '00 for that if I can buy at invoice which seems to be tuff here in miami. I highly recommend that website to anyone still looking also.

I can't wait for the 2000 F-150 Crew cab 4WD to come out. With the , 5.4L, off-roadpkg, tow package, on it does any body think I will be able to pull a horse trailer with a goose neck connection on it? Anybody hear anything about them good or bad?
  • pizzadudepizzadude Member Posts: 35
    No problem with the info...

That sounds like a pretty good deal..if 23600 is the number he gave you, I'd offer him 22500 and tell him to include tax, title, and tags in there. If not, it still sounds like a very fair price...but like you said, you probably could get a '00 for that if you find the right dealer. I say if you can't find a dealer to come close to invoice on a '00, then go with that 23K deal.

    Good luck!!

Just sold my 88 Dakota and picked up my first f150. WOW! a lot has changed in 12 years. I shopped all brands over past 6 mo. and chose Ford because I could set it up the way I wanted and not pay for what I don't use. Ordered 9/1, drove it home 10/23. 2000 XL SC 4x4 4.6L Deep Wedgewood Blue...Options= rear slider, auto. trans., vinyl bench. Hey, I know it,s REAL basic but that,s all I need! Runs GREAT, looks GREAT, holds the road and my backside just fine. Wipes out clean after work and keeps it,s shine! 300 over invoice and 53 days....Right on time!

I'm purchasing a 2000 F150 Supercab Flareside with a 4.6 L automatic XTL with the XTL sports package. I ordered it in silver and the dealer said it would be in by November 8th. Can anyone tell me their feelings about purchasing the extended warranty on this truck? Is it worth the money, or what? Thanks.
  • shaytjshaytj Member Posts: 1
The ford manual transmission from my understanding is an aluminum tranny with only a 1,900 lb towing capacity. I'm a manual transmission user but the auto has a 6,900 towing capacity so if you are looking for a good trans stay away from the manual. Ford for life.
  • caddprocaddpro Member Posts: 20
As a rule, I wouldn't. Take the $1000 and by some ford stock, if you need that kind of repair after the 3/36K, cash in some stock. My credit union offered and 100% money back guarantee. If you don't make a claim against the extended warranty, they refund 100% of the money. Not sure if I will do that. Mt truck arrived by rail today, so I guess I need to make up my mind.
  • caddprocaddpro Member Posts: 20
Well my delima was answered when I realized that a 99 would be a year old before I made the first payment. Slightly more slant to the rear seat and the overhead console are the differences in 99/00.
Buying off the lot will be tuff to get at invoice for a 00. Should be easy for a 99 but probably not many left. Like the pizzadude I was too picky and special ordered mine. EVERY dealer near me would special order at invoice. 00's are filling up the lots around here, guess they aren't "Dealing" yet. (Atlanta)
  • mikegscottmikegscott Member Posts: 1
I would not take the extended warranty. Although your dealer sells it, they are usually from a company operating out of your state. My experience is that the dealer will not do anything but honor the limited terms of the warranty company, which are mainly designed for Major Problems Only. My guess is that these extended warranties are about half profit, and are rarely used. Try to check with someone who has tried to use one.

Agree with mikegscott. My wife worked for a couple of the big dealers in the Denver area and she told me years ago they push those warranties because they are a big money maker for the dealership, about 70% of what you pay goes in their pocket. Just like insurance, you are betting you will need it, and they are betting you won't. Bottom line is you have to do what you feel most comfortable with
I have never purchased one myself so can't tell how good they are when you need it, proably like most everything else, some good some not. I have leased for the past several years so I am never past the factory warranty, but that isn't for everyone either. Good Luck

On my previous truck (piece of __ dodge) I bought a non dealer extended warranty and it was the only smart thing I did with regards to that purchase. It paid for itself probably 4 or 5 times over. The biggest problem was the hassle between the dealer and the warrenty company. It typically took an extra 3 days and 10 phone calls to get my car fix because it was not a dealer extended warrenty. The dealer had to call for authorization and could very get through and then they had to receive payment before I got the car back - big big hassle. On my new vehicle (2000 f150 4x4) I got the factory ford extended warranty - it cost more but I will definetly save many many grey hairs when It comes time to get the car fixed!!
