Hahahahahha.... cannot win for losing on that one!

I was headed home a couple nights ago during a misty snowish precipitation. It was just enough that it was dusting the road and, subsequently, causing a haze over the roadway as vehicles kept the dust kicked up. Just after passing out of town into the unlighted stretch of road, I thought I caught a glimpse of something moving ahead... then it was gone. I go awhile longer and decide to flip on my drivers for a moment to confirm if I did see something. Sure enough! Just ahead and closing fast was an early '90s vintage Suburban with no lights! what?! That thing must have had a wiring problem because, when I passed it, the headlights and front markers were on. It seems to be a bad year for crossing paths with this sort of vehicle....

Wife needed to get something from the store (a local fabric store) she was just going in pick it up and be out, maybe 3-5 minutes.

Some years ago, while driving with my wife, she said she had to get 2 items at large grocery store (Jewel). I waited in car for about 25 minutes and started to worry. Did not see any police cars or ambulances come to store, but was kind of worried. Went into store and found her at checkout with much more than 2 items. No matter what is on her list (large or small), she must go up and down every single aisle. She is also an auto enthusiast. Maybe Edmunds could start a Message board about inconsiderate (at times) wives who also are car fans and tie it into cars.

On topic, saw inconsiderate drivers near shopping centers today. Waiting at two different places at turn-in lanes to get off of main road and into shopping centers, the opposing traffic is backed up maybe 2-3 blocks and that traffic is stopping, creeping. Will any of these drivers stop to let me turn? Most will not, but here and there are kind considerate souls who did. I do if I am stopped/creeping.

That kind of thing worries me when on a rural back road coming up to stop sign and wanting to cross a fast numbered highway and no or insufficient street lights. I will usually roll down both front windows and listen first before proceeding ahead.

That is a very good idea. Admittedly, I have never made a habit of sound-checking, but thinking back to many years ago.... I had friends who would habitually drive at night sans lights (not even parking lights) just for the thrill of driving in the dark. Now, they did not just drive without lights, but would drive at highly excessive speeds without lights. So, basically, they were driving blind to any oncoming dangers and just relying on a clear road ahead. Ah, the stupid things people do as teens. I have to wonder if they ever grew up...

I do not drive the same sort of "back roads" we had back home, but perhaps the one time I do decide to sound check it will end up saving my life! Good to be thinking about it anyway, as road noise travels well in rural areas.

I was driving through a local forest preserve on a two lane (one lane each way) winding road during a pretty decent rain. I was doing 40-45 in a 45 following someone at a reasonable distance (not to far not to close). Well some idiot in a pickup truck comes racing up behind me flashing his lights then tailgating me.

Seeing that 1.) there really wasn't any place for me to pull over to let him by and 2.) there was traffic ahead of me I had no ideal what he was trying to do.

When men go into a store to buy something, they use the rifle system.

When women go into a store to buy, they use the shotgun system. It's called shopping.

I saw something today I havent seen since I did it as a teenager. Picked the kids up from school today and a friend of my sons was in front of us with his Moms minivan. Got up to the speed limit (55mph) and there he was in the BACK of the van waving at us. As a teenager I did this too with friend, or a teacher behind me. I would get up to the speed limit and set the cruise, run to the back of the conversion van and wave through the back window before the van would drift into the ditch, then run up to the front and continue driving. The looks on peoples faces behind me was priceless.

I'm hoist on my own pitard. My mantra is combine trips to save fuel and miles; so when I'm driving she likes to come up with the stops to make because she really doesn't like to drive and park herself (other than the local Krogers 0.9 mi away).

After many years, I finally realized that I only want to go shopping with wife at places like Costco or Sams if I want to get some walking excercise. Will usually have to "try" to talk her into not buying something. Not too successful.

Was at Costco and Sams in last few days and everyone in good mood and no inconsiderates either in parking lots or in store. Must be the season. Lots of great food samples.

My wife acts as though shopping is a chore, though I know better, it's more like a recreational activity to her. I get to play cards with the boys on Friday, and she can go shopping on Saturday. Sounds fair. My winnings usually only scratch the surface of her losses though.

Don't know it this one is "inconsiderate" or just being horribly inattentive. I'm in a shopping mall(no it's not what you think) with the kids. I drive up to a 3 way stop sign. I'm there about 2 seconds before I see this big suv coming into my 9 o'clock. So, I stop, then proceed thru the intersection, while this SUV doesn't even slow down, almost t-bones me. Well, he waves at me as I'm laying on the horn and getting fired up. I assume he just didn't see the stop sign. But, it was sitting there plain as day. Oh well.

So, can you imagine my surprise last night when my wife came to pick me up from work and says, "I just hit a snow plow!" I said something along the lines of, "How? What kind of a snow plow? Like a State plow? (half jokingly) Don't tell me you did not see it..."

No, it was a plow blade, pickup truck sized, apparently just sitting in the middle of the highway mostly blocking the left lane. She was in that particular lane, passing a vehicle on the right (of course), and to her left is a concrete barrier 24" to the left of the inside fog line. Perfect setup for a collision. She's quite a swerver, though. (She managed to miss a Rav4 many years ago that was hell-bent on getting T-boned when it came from an entrance ramp, across a no-man's land, into the right lane, and into the left lane going at about 20 mph perpendicular to the flow of 50mph traffic. She swerved hard right, then hard left, and somehow missed the Rav4, the pickup on our right, and kept our car from rolling.) Turns out that she took the left, hugged the barrier, and..... clipped the plow. It tore apart the right side of our bumper and destroyed the fog lamp, but no damage to the body panels, tire, rim, etc. All in all we came out fairly well.

But, honestly, how the heck does something like a SNOW PLOW end up abandoned on a highway?!?

This is Alaska and you have to ask THAT???!!! I've seen the craziest things abandoned on the highway. My current pet peeve is DOT's boulders that they feel the need to drop, I've got a busted foglight and a chipped windshield because of them!

Maybe it fell out of the bed of the truck and nobody noticed? I saw a jet ski do that once, lol.

Many years ago, an acquaintance in his mid 20's was driving down an alley at night in a big city in his new car. He saw a big cardboard box ahead and thought that he would just bunt it out of the way. Turns out there was an old safe in the box. Front end of car was pretty badly damaged. Guess someone thought it was a joke.

Reminds me, we were coming back from Richmond on I-64 today, and we saw a police car with flashing lights on the shoulder. In front of it was a Buick that had a mattress apparently lodged underneath it, and the hood was up. I guess the driver thought he could clear it -- no dice.

I’m glad I have the same philosophy!!!

Not too long after I got my license I was coming up a hill not too far from home, when I came around a bend not too sharp but being young I was going a little faster than I should have been going. All of a sudden I see a box (about the size of boxes that hold ten reams of copy paper) about 1/3 into the right lane of a two lane road. My first thought was to go around it because there was no oncoming traffic. However, I decided to get out and move the box rather than leave it there for someone else to hit. The only thing that worried me was there wasn’t much of a shoulder at that point so I wasn’t able to pull off the road completely. After I got out of the car and walked toward the box to pull it aside, I heard what sounded like a puppy. Sure enough, when I got closer it was a puppy, a pure bred German Shepherd about 7 or 8 weeks old according to a vet . The guy behind me pulled over just like several cars behind him. He got out of his car to see if I needed help and when he saw the pup he said that’s a fine looking dog, somebody is going to be looking for that dog. I’d take it but I already have a dog.

I took the dog home and put an ad in the paper to find the owner and was very confident that whoever lost it out of their truck would claim him but I never got a single call, so I kept him. That was the best dog I ever had to this day.

Needless to say I’m glad I didn’t hit the box or leave it there for someone else to hit.

A similar thing happened to me the other day. I approached a stop sign just after the car facing me. I of course let him go, then proceed to make my left turn, but the guy behind the first car just follows him right across with no hesitation.
Needless to say I just kept going, but I almost thought he was going to hit me. :confuse: Are people really that clueless? (I already know the answer unfortunately.)
  • whahappanwhahappan Member Posts: 69
About a year ago I had a similar experience but with a 12" diameter log across the left lane. It was just after a slight rise and curve, and there were 3 or 4 cars beside me on the right, nowhere to go as it was so long it even blocked the small shoulder and there were trees and bushes just beyond the shoulder. I had no choice but to go right over it.

The car stalled right afterward, but after I got a tow the mechanic just had to reset the emergency fuel shutoff. Now that I know where it is I can just reset it myself next time :P

My bet was that the dog was abandoned.

That was my first thought as well but since the dog was a pure bred I found it hard to believe that someone would just abandon it. The vet that took care of him would always comment how healthy and how perfectly proportioned he was and if I had the papers for him, he could have been used for breeding because he was just that kind of quality. Either way, he gave me and my family lots of pleasure.

My dog is a pure bred rat but that didn't prevent her original family from getting rid of her. They however gave her to the local humane society. The kennel she stays at when we go away is owned by a breeder of rats and mentioned that she looked perfect for breeding. However the Humane society fixes all dogs before letting people adopt them.

A few months ago one of my clients hit a railroad tie that was rolling down the highway. It was at night and he was doing 70 or so mph and didn't have time to swerve or anything. The tie was also covering both lanes of the highway.

He just kind of braced himself and hit it at almost full speed since he didn't have time to slow down.

He figured he ended up getting three or four feet of air and it put flat spots in all of his rims. Other then that he was ok.

Oh yeah he pulled off to the side of the road afterwards to check on his tires and just had to sit down for a few minutes to get his heart rate down.

He threw some flares down by the railroad tie and called the police to have them come and move it.

I remember being on duty and I saw a kitten get hit by a car. Needless to say, I stopped my patrol car, ran into the stret, saved the cat. I then heard a crash, and I looked back and observed my car had backed up and hit a parked car. I had neglected to put my car in park, but I saved a kitten. (Another police report to do!!,ha ha)

Later on I worked the freeways. One rainy day I took a dog off the freeway to the shelter. I saw a kitten at then shelter, and I bent down to scratch her head. Three days later I took the kitten homw to my family. The kitten rode on my shoulder as I drove my car home.

Finally, I found astray kitten, one of many dumped out on a backroad which was part of my beat. I put that one in my patrolcar and took that one home too. I am a sucker for animals. We had three kids, two dogs, five cats, two guina pigs a bird, and a tortise that whistled for lettuce.

It sound like that dog you took home jmonroe touched your heart as the kittens touched mine.

Good luck to all and enjoy a peacefu Xmas.

Ah, well, yes, but most things I see abandoned along the highway are bags of trash, water jugs, things of that nature. I guess I just cannot figure how someone can lose something as significant (both in size and value) as a plow blade off their vehicle and not notice. What's more, why would it not be secured? Granted, one or more straps could have broken prior to that and the owner could have been actively searching for it, but hmm. Usually something like that does not go from "just as I left it" to "where did it go?!" in a moment's notice. Anyhow, I went ahead and called the Troopers to let them know of the danger in case it was still in the highway. My wife had our son in the car and, since she would have needed to either walk several hundred feet back up the road or back up along the narrow shoulders (guard rail on one side, concrete barrier on the other), she decided it was best just to stop at my work place a few miles away and call it in. The dispatcher gave me a case # in the event we wanted to follow up with it.

As for the dog, jmonroe, it likely was intentionally abandoned in the roadway. My mother used to be feverish about picking up abandoned animals. At one point, she had upwards of 100 cats at one time (all "fixed") and the only thing that kept her population under control, other than the sterilization, was the inevitable disease that would hit now and again, as well as the folks who drove by at 80+ mph on a gravel road and wiped out her cats on a daily basis. She did get some good animals out of it though. Often she would find litters of kittens abandoned in boxes or, more typically, burlap or plastic bags. Ugh. If it were not bad enough that people do this sort of thing, then they place the animal in a roadway with the hope/intention that someone else will end up killing it.

I think the weirdest thing I've ever seen was a dead black bear with tie down straps on it, obviously lost off a truck. We saw a truck headed back towards it a few miles later with the matching straps on his 4-wheeler trailer. Course by then the fish and game had shown up so I'm sure he had some 'splaining to do, lol.

We were sitting in the turn lane waiting to make a left hand turn off of Airport Way on to Sportsmen's Way so we could go to Fred Meyer West tonight. We were behind a taxi cab and the light was green, but it was a yeild to oncoming traffic green (no arrow at this light). I saw the taxi start to go and I said to hubby I can't believe they are going, there isn't enough time to clear the intersection.

There was a Pontiac Grand Am coming down Airport Way moving right along. Well, the taxi went, the Grand Am slammed on his brakes and tried to avoid the taxi, he did, but in the process lost control of his car. He was headed right for our truck (hubby's big dually) at the last minute he jerked it and spun out, went into the median, lost part of his bumper, spun back onto Airport Way and proceeded to slide all the way to University Ave.

We followed the taxi who, of course, took off. Got her plate number, hubby asked her if she had any idea that she had just caused an accident, she said she never saw the Grand Am. Called it into the troopers, went back to Airport way and the Grand Am was gone. Not sure where he went, but obviously he didn't hit anyone else thank goodness. I felt bad for him since it was really the taxi's fault.

Add that the inconsiderate trucker tonight on the way home who couldn't make up his mind what speed he should go, side of the road he should be on, or lights he should have on. He got upset about hubby passing him, so he bright lighted us, I'm sure he didn't expect us to have a CB and that he'd get yelled at by a woman. Major JERK!!! He chilled after that and shut the offroad lights off.

I think we'll stay home the rest of the night!!

I always get behind these cars with no working brake lights. It is dangerous. These are the same people who will tell a police officer that the brakes lights were working before I run into the back of them. Where is a police man(woman) when u need them to get these people off the road? Should be a $500 ticket.

Besides my car and my wife telling me I was going the wrong way I had run ins with a couple of interesting characters. First one was on a four lane road (two in each direction) that gained a lane. What happens is that at one light there is a right turn only lane that after the light is the beginning of a third lane (so that the right lane prior to the light now becomes the middle lane). So I am first at the light in the right lane with some idiot behind me and the right turn lane is empty. When the light turns green I enter into the intersection and immediately start merging into the new right lane signalling my intention. I guess the idiot behind me didn't like that and got right behind me and blew his horn. I didn't cut the guy off or anything because he was right behind me all the time. :confuse:

Second one was along this one major street that goes on a sort of North by Northeast course then turns to go due North. This where a residential side street going north dead ends just before it would have run into the major street. Those of you with Google Earth can go to 41 43 21.18N 88 07 01.96W to see what I am talking about.

There are no barricades at the end of the dead end street and at night looking north from a block or so back it almost looks like it just goes on as it is in perfect alignment with that one major street. Needles to say I saw someone late Christmas Eve drive right through that dead end and ended up in the grassy area (its about 2-300 feet of grassy area before you hit the other road). I made a call into the police and I would have loved to see the driver explain what happened.

Well Christmas night me and she who must be obeyed decided to go to the casino after everyone was gone and we were alone. Entering into the place we got behind so yahoo from Oklahoma who apparently though 2 MPH was a neck breaking speed. S/he was driving so slow that the Caddy was sputtering, I could barely keep it from stalling.

Well we get around Slowpoke Rodriguez and to the valets and wouldn't you know it, not one of them could drive a stick. I swear the guy looked at me like I had two heads when I asked him if he knew how to drive a stick.

I almost rear ended a brand new ford many decades ago due to non working brake lights. Since they were heading the same way I was I followed at a much greater distance and when they stopped I told them about their lights. At first they didn't believe me, they had bought the car brand spanking new the day before.

I saw too many knuckleheaded holiday drivers to count last night -- unfortunately, moderate traffic and some rain and a light fog is all it takes to send a lot of folks into an absolute dither.

We had white-knuckled older folks doing 25 (not an exaggeration) on uphill stretches of a two-lane 55 mph limited access parkway, we had a bunch of people on the same parkway rolling along with their high-beams on (inconsiderate AND dumb), we had dozens of SUVs and minivans not even coming close to staying within their lanes on very moderate, well-banked, see-it-coming-from-a-mile-away curves, we had a couple of idiots from NJ leaving a trail of near-destruction in their wake as one idiot followed the other back to the Garden State. The second idiot apparently felt he'd get lost if he strayed more than five feet from the first idiot's bumper, so everyone else had to get out of their way as they weaved from lane to lane, failed to yield, cut a bunch of people off, continually straddled lanes, and alternated speeds between 30 and 70.

Peace on earth and goodwill to all.

saw the taxi start to go and I said to hubby I can't believe they are going, there isn't enough time to clear the intersection.

Sorry for the Pontiac driver, but sounds like the person did a good job of avoiding other vehicles. A big *whew* for you and Mr. akangl!

That reminds me of a near-incident late Saturday night (er.... Sunday morning 0220) when some genius decided to pull a similar stunt - except I was in the Grand Am (so to speak). I was on Chena Pump Road coming into town - 45mph SL. I was probably going about 40-42, as the sight distance and number of intersections in this area do not really warrant a 45 mph speed. As I came around a blind curve, there was a.... maybe Oldsmobile Aurora or equivalent? sitting on a side street to my right, intending to turn left. Not before, mind you, I saw this vehicle but after (so it could see me too), the driver decides to pull out. And, it is crawling out at that. It was snowing with about 1.5" of fresh, dry, powdery white stuff over the pack ice. So, it starts to nose out. At first I thought the driver was just anticipating a go. There was a right turn lane between my lane and his drive, so he had a bit of room. But, as he crossed the turn lane, he just kept putting on speed. At this point I am about 60 feet away and decided that a collision was immenent at my current speed. So, I hit the brakes to slow, but not so much as to engage ABS. Then, he guns it for a moment and breaks traction, thus losing quite a bit of momentum. At this point, a t-bone was looming large, so I slammed the brakes to engage the ABS, and gently swerved around him on the right. When I passed, his vehicle had cleared my lane by about 50-60%.

I am not sure why I did not recall that, as it was the closest I have come to a collision in quite some time. Perhaps it is just because those late Saturday night drives home are always filled with oddities.

Yesterday the roads were relatively peaceful. Today people were highly reluctant to be passed. At Safeway this afternoon, a Chevy pickup was sitting in front of us (both in parking spots) and idling with its brights aimed right at our eyes. I flashed my top-mounted drivers with the hope that someone was actually occupying the vehicle and the driver obliged by dimming them. Amazingly considerate for 12/26!
