And as long as the top few percent profit, who cares about anything else, right?

I wonder what kind of kickbacks are received by our fine, credentialed, capable, responsible, and accountable public sector and law enforcement leadership.

Right! That's American Capitalism & why I remain here than any other place in the world including Germany and down under. We could not have accomplished what we have accumulated in any other government form especially the Socialist countries. :)

That's not capitalism, it is legalized robbery. Bribing your way to fortunes gained via unjust laws is not what the US should be based on. Are areas that shortened yellow light cycles to maximize the robbery practicing capitalism too?

What have we accumulated? Chinese-owned debt and foreign policy controlled by distinctly non-American forces? Wow,that's something to be proud of. Those evil "socialist" countries often have a higher standard of living these days - funny how that worked out.

"...how can you miss a bus?..."

The other night I was dropping off a sports coach from my school bus. I had all my red lights and flashers going. A white Toyota Avalon ran up the RIGHT side the bus inches away from the open door. If the coach hadn't paused for a second to toss something in the trash he would have been killed.

How could someone miss a bright yellow bus with multiple large red flashing lights and two large flashing signs which said STOP? :confuse:

Here's one BMW driver with a real problem on their hands. They hit a trooper car that had just finished a traffic stop on the on-ramp.

I bet the insurance companies are just lining up for that guy right now. Surprised it wasn't a newer model, those are more [non-permissible content removed]-tastic, at least on the left coast. I wouldn't doubt if a phone or coffee or cig was involved too.

The ramp is a two-lane ramp that merges to one wide lane before merging onto I-70. There is shoulder and I assume the officer was sitting partly off the wide ramp where it was two lanes of a wide one lane after the narrowing.

I read the report to say that the emergency lights were not operating. The traffic stop had left. I wonder if the officer started to move out onto the ramp and the BMW did not notice the white car with all the reflective tape on the back.

That's gotta be a hard call to make to your insurance company, "I hit an Ohio State Patrol car in the rear this morning."

I would have gotten the license number, called the local police dept and made a report. I am just guesssing but the Avalon was "in a hurry" and was not going to be safe especially when he/she pasted you the right.

I also noticed a BMW dented a patrol car. I hope the officer got out safely. The CHP my old employer, lost four officers down in the LA basin and into the surrounding rural counties due to head in ## drivers in Aug/Sept.

I believe the article mentioned three of the officers, were on four years or less, and one officer had substantial time.

Indeed, in Ca. an CHP officer is more likely to get seriousyl injured or killed due to being struck by other vehicles, than shot to death or high speed chases by bad guys/gals.

Hope all have an excellent week end. Two weeks ago we brought in to our home a baby English Bulldog to replace one we lost early last year. Our goldie and him are already buddies.

Good luck to all and stay safe.

Does Ohio (or any other state where a state patrol/police vehicle has been hit recently) have specific traffic laws for approaching and/or passing by a stopped officer?

In Georgia, on any multi-lane road, you are legally required to move over one lane if possible so there is an empty lane 'cushion' between traffic and the officer and/or whomever or whatever he/she is stopped for. If moving out of the lane isn't possible due to traffic or because there's not another lane, you must reduce your speed to 45mph on a highway or 35mph on a surface street until you pass by.

I've seen this enforced more than once when multiple officers were at a traffic stop and some jerk went flying by at 80mph less than 2-feet from where they were standing! It's common sense to me, but then again....common sense ain't so common, is it?

My mom has been driving a school bus for special needs children for almost 25 years. She has seen some of the most rude and idiotic drivers ever allowed on the roads!

Just last year, a man passed her as she was stopped near the top of a hill, on a double-yellow line, with the STOP sign extended and lights flashing. It was a 35mph zone and the child's parent had just helped him off the bottom step of the bus when this SOB comes flying around her (from behind) going at least 50mph!!! The kid and parent would have been standing in that spot less than 10 seconds later! Thankfully, I've taught my mom how to identify car makes/models pretty well and she caught the license plate number. She called it in and the guy was ARRESTED within the hour!

At least once per week, usually more often, someone coming from the opposite direction will run the flashing, extended STOP sign. She has a helper/monitor to help with the kids (because they are special needs) and she almost always manages to get a tag number or enough for the county sheriff to identify the vehicle. At minimum, it is a 6-point offense on your MVR, which is equal to a DUI (in terms of the damage to driving record, insurance rates, etc).

Morons like these pay dearly for their actions when you consider the cost of a major traffic ticket (the 6-pointer I just mentioned is $500+ fees in my county), higher insurance premiums for at three to five years with that ticket on their MVR and dealing with any other legal ramifications! Often the a-holes who don't stop and get the 6-pointer ticket already have enough points accumulated so it results in a points suspension of their driver's license. If it's a first offense, they can usually get them back in 60 days but spend at least $400 to make it happen. If they've ever had a suspension before, they get suspended for FIVE years!!!

Bad manners are a sign of poor upbringing, limited intelligence, psychological issues or some combination of those! I consider rude drivers to have very bad manners...

I bet your Mom has seen it all, but I've sure seen more than my share of obnoxious school bus driver behavior.

I made the mistake, first time at my daughter's school, of waiting for her where buses pull in and where parents weren't supposed to. This didn't preclude any bus from going where they needed to though. This b*tch driver aimed a bus straight towards my car and stopped short, wailing out the window at me. I told her "Thank you for being courteous" and left. I wish I'd had gotten her bus number.

At my other daughter's high school, a string of buses routinely run a stop sign in the school parking lot, making every other driver wait for the line of buses. Great stuff.

Along the same lines, just yesterday I noticed a teenaged driver in a current-model Honda Civic driving in the pitch black with no lights on. After signaling her from behind at least ten times, she got the drift. I'm amazed at when the cheapest Chevys have had automatic headlights for years, that the esteemed Honda and others haven't put it in their cars yet.

Here in Illinois passing a stopped school bus loading or unloading passengers is an automatic suspension of your drivers license. Not sure for how long but it is automatic.

Snakeweasel the suspension is an excellent message of communicating that Ill. is serious about child safety and especially when the child is getting on and/or off of the bus.

Previous posts mentioned other drivers not caring about safety with children especially when the school bus driver is trying to keep them safe. I am glad to see the children getting help from caring citizens.

We in CA could sure use more help at the crosswalks where I live. Due to city "budget restraints' several crossing guard posts have been eliminated. And this was in light of our legislators increased pay and "benefits".

Sail on the the end of the earth old Ca......(then what).

Hope all have a wonderful week end. :(

Maybe I'm missing something but both of these cases seem pretty ordinary to me. I can't defend rudeness but I do understand bus drivers getting frustrated by drivers who don't follow the rules. I'll bet it happens almost every day.

As for running a stop sign in the parking lot... since it is not on the street, I'm sure the bus drivers are told to all go at the same time and not to stop. They need to keep on schedule so there is no sense in them waiting. At my kids' high school, they have the school security guy go out in the middle of the street to stop traffic so that all the buses can get out at once.

Going to work yesterday morning down an open road two lanes in each direction along a 3 mile stretch of road with only one light somewhere in the middle. I am following a sedan in the left lane approaching a line of cars in the right lane. A police car pulls out and gets behind the line of cars in the right lane and the sedan slows down and stays in the left lane right behind the police car.

Now this is where it gets fun, we are approaching that lone stop light. At this point traffic in the right lane slows down because a lot of cars make that right turn and there is no right turn lane. So as that long line of cars slows down so does that sedan. Wont pass that police officer, who now was doing at least 10 under the limit, to save her soul.

I passed a MA state trooper on I-95 after a rain. The road was not crowded. 8PM.
Speed limit 55. He was travelling 50 in the rightmost lane.
I moved 2 lanes over from him, next to the highspeed lane,
I crawled past him at maybe 57 mph.
He lit me up, detained me, and gave me a written warning for 65 in a 55, because he had seen people hydroplaning earlier.
I was surprised, but also thankful it was just a warning. It's the first time i have heard of a trooper giving a warning instead of a citation. Previously I'd learned that they *always* issue at least one citation if they take the time to detain a driver!

Yeah, some police officers are just schmucks like that. Rude of him to waste your time, but at least he didn't waste even more by making you go to court to share his lack of credibility with others.

I have never had an problem passing a police officer. I have done it on multiple occasions without incident. Just as long as I wasn't speeding.

Also troopers don't have to give a citation, They can give warnings unless it is one of a few moving violations (like passing a stopped school bus or speeding in a construction zone).

In much of Europe you're allowed to pass school buses at very slow speeds (5km/h maybe?) I think this is the best approach since a school bus that's loading or unloading 20 kids can really snarl traffic. And Western Europe has an excellent pedestrian safety record (though that may be due to better drivers in general).
I get that the laws here are targeting the idiots who blow past buses at high speeds though, and agree that there should be strict punishments for these people who risk the lives of schoolkids.

I saw a pretty bad crash going up I-75 north of Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. I didn't see what exactly caused it, but what happened was this-a compact hatch swerves across all 4 lanes and runs off the road doing ~40mph. Once it hits the grass it rolls several times and hits a tree still doing ~20mph, and then rolls back into an upright position. I called 911 since the driver probably sustained some injuries. Fingers are crossed that he/she was wearing a seatbelt.

That wouldn't work very well when kids have to cross the street in front of the bus.

Today I got to take a taxi home, as we have a little snow and my ride chickened out. Roads didn't look too bad - poorly cleared per the local norm, but lots of non-compact snow and ice, bare pavement, wet pavement...not an ice rink. Saw a shuttle bus spun out and smashed into a concrete barrier not far from the airport. The real fun came as I was almost home, heading up a wide highway faster than most traffic, which was moving along at about 30-40...I thought the driver was being kind of ballsy but we weren't having any problems. Traffic was sparse...the cab hit a bad patch, and we spun about 270 degrees, ending up perpendicular to the road facing it. Thankfully the side of the road was a wide low embankment, so the car (Crown Vic) didn't hit anything, just bottomed out a little. Driver didn't even get out, just got back on the road and continued on. Close call.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,688
That sounds like fun.... Hopefully, the driver took it a little easier since the car obviously was not equipped to handle the road at that speed!

We're having a bit of fun weather here, too.

lol, I read that y'all shut the Fairbanks schools down for the rest of the week thanks to the freezing rain.

I was reading the Boise paper a little while ago wondering how our former neighbors are managing, and on the front page is a photo of a Kia SUV on its side. Not much more than a dusting fell there, but people still drive too fast, especially during the first snowstorm. We drove 50 miles to the next town over last week in some snow here in the upper Midwest and I kept it under 45 mph for about 30 miles. Saw two cars in the ditch.

The news said something like 200 Seattle buses, many of them the long articulated ones, had to be towed Monday night.

I actually came into work this morning...some bad roads, but nothing taking it easy didn't solve, even in my RWD car. I think I'll try to leave early though.

Your weather would literally shut this region down, state of emergency.

Northern Illinois may be getting some snow, rain today. Every year, one has to be 100 percent defensive driving in the first few snowfalls. Drivers have to regain their slippery road condition driving skills. And, there will always be some amount of drivers who have never driven on ice or snow. These could be young people, teen agers, or someone transplanted from a warmer clime such as FL, GA, etc.

For winter driving, best setup is 4 snow(winter) tires mounted on an extra set of rims. Best to have an AWD or FWD vehicle. RWD not so good.

And, to be expected over the whole winter will be what seems an inordinate amount of suvs with awd in the ditches compared to regular vehicles. Don't know why, but drivers of suvs feel they can go fast in bad conditions and their vehicle has unlimitted capabilites as if they were on dry.

On I90, 2-lane each direction, yesterday afternoon. Heavy semi traffic.

Left lane going maybe 10-15 mph over right and some gaps in left. Semi pulls into gap one car in front of me and then drives, it seemed, 1-2 mph faster than the car and semi he was passing. It took forever before he cleared and moved back into right lane. In meantime, traffic backed up quite a bit behind me. What's with these guys.

Reading all the newer posts I see wise and excellent drivers are contributing good stuff about snow driving. Here in Ca, two nights ago, car/truck backup from east of Placerville to over the summit on I 80. And it looked like all vehicles had snow chains.

Even at that, watching the late news, many cars in the ditch/snow bank. But then it seemed to be the first real snow in the Sierras and hence, numerous t/cs.

Wish everyone here a peaceful bountiful Thanksgiving dinner.

    Stay safe

Yes, and it was a good choice. Unprecedented here to cancel school for anything, but beautiful irony that we are having three "rain days" instead of the more typical "snow days" in other regions!

The roads are absolutely horrendous, though not nearly as bad as Monday when it all began. I, of course, cannot get out on the road enough! I live for this type of driving! Most drivers have opted to stay home the last several days, leaving the roads to the more competent drivers / vehicles, so it has been a very enjoyable, low-traffic experience for the most part.

Monday was a zoo, though, because it had just begun and main roads were at near-zero traction, meaning even a slight slope or crown in the road would cause vehicles to slide into the ditch. Amazingly, I saw no fender benders (though I heard there were a few), even though dozens, if not hundreds, of cars found their way into a ditch... some of them mere feet/inches apart!

As one local put it, "Drive safe out there and remember, for every mile of road, there are two miles of ditch!" ;)

Got out of work early and drove home, the roads are breaking up a little, and the idiots are out in force. Three main schools of action - the pickup drivers who drive faster on snow than they would on dry pavement, the scaredy cats usually in crossovers who freeze up and go 10 mph the second a mm of snow is on the road, and the "new residents" who barely know what to do when it is dry and sunny, and generally just amble about aimlessly, making new lanes and wandering around at various random speeds. Very few normal people like me :shades:

A week ago today I put in about 350 miles of pleasant Autobahn driving - wasn't able to hit huge speeds but did cruise along for long periods at 100mph+ on velvety smooth roads with people who knew how to move right. Today I took a spin on local highways and crumbing surface streets (why can't we make manhole covers flush with the road?), and it made me depressed. A few winners stick in my head - "new resident" in a Mini wagon who wouldn't get up over 58 in the left lane of 405 as traffic stacked up and passed. Aging boomer couple in an Exploder on the same road going about 54 in the same left lane. Motorcyclists (not wacko sportbikers, but touring bikes loaded down with luggage) weaving around people at 75-80 on the same road. Young woman in a Golf who got up to about 75 before she let me get by...sorry girly, I'm a lot faster. And to top it off when I took the old beast out for a spin, a dope in a Tundra pulling a trailer going about 30 in the left lane of a suburban 40mph road, no turns or other excuses for him to be there...note to him, when you get passed on the right by a fintail going uphill, you're going too slow.

    Hilarious.

WA state has to be one of the worst offenders when it comes to LLCs and frustratingly slow traffic in general, especially west of the mountains. This stuff simply wouldn't fly in more developed areas of the world. Maybe moving right to let people move past is seen as "socialist" and un-American :shades:

No. On the contrary. Moving to the right would be the responsible thing, both on the highway and otherwise. Maybe the left lane campers LLCs have something in common with leftists. I am going to watch to see how many LLCs still have a certain bumper sticker on their vechicles from 2008.
