When I was at the dealer looking over the Muranos lined up in all the available colors, the blue really stood out. Also, I felt the blue goes well with beige interior (as oppose to a blue/gray scheme). My previous 4 cars have been either silver/gray or tan/beige and no doubt, those colors hide dirt much better than my blue Murano. I did some research and found a certain German polish/sealant product. The sealant seems to help the paint shed the dirty water spots during driving.

If I bought one, it will be in a light color, white, if I could find one...

I find that if I use a good polish and wash my car once a week, the color of my car doesn't matter much. Now, we are not talking winter driving or living on a dirt road here.

My friend just purchased the Murano and isn't happy about washing it since he has to climb on a step ladder to reach the roof. Up and down, up and down!
  • rainbowfarmrainbowfarm Member Posts: 59
I hose the roof of my Pathfinder, but I don't polish, "mitt" or wax it.
  • dweiserdweiser Member Posts: 288
One is because it looks nice.
    The other is to protect.
I assume you have an umbrella or a hat for your head. Wax/polish is like a hat or an umbrella for the roof of your vehicle.

I wish Nissan would give the Murano full HP power of the 3.5 engine, as in the 350z/Maxima/Infinity G35. They all got 280 HP while the Murano/Pathfinder/Altima got only 240/245 HP. Also with the CVT the acceleration should be much quicker than what it is now, it should be able to be in the 5-6s second instead of 8-9s second range. :( overall the Murano is an excellent car/SUV .. just my 2 cents :)
  • maxamillion1maxamillion1 Member Posts: 1,467
The Infiniti G35 sedan has 260, the coupe 280.

    The Maxima has 265.

    The 350z has 287.

How much does the Dynamic Control Package add to the Murano's handling and safety? It is hard to find a car with this option on it.

I was wanting a Navigation System, but apparently there is an aftermarket system available with it's own screen, which means I could get it without having to get the Dynamic Control Package. One dealer in Dallas offers it, though I can get it directly from the specialty store they use.

I had this nissan accessory installed today. Looks pretty good, rugged, grey against my silver MO. cost was $72 for installation, which seems high. The bumper guard was something over $200. Jim

I have the dynamic control package and the nav.

Got my Murano in July but I also have dynamic stability control on our Toyoata Sienna and love it. Plus you can always turn it off. You simply can not spin out on icy roads.

As far as nav goes get it. The after market ones are small and where do you mount it?
  • gary132gary132 Member Posts: 8
I didn't know that the after market Navs were small. It is very hard to find Dynamic Control Packages with the All Wheel Drive. Perhaps you have an SE. Browsing through various dealer inventories, the only dynamic control packages were on the SE.

If so, I have an AWD SL with it proving such animals do exist.
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
You can find it, I had to get my dealer to go to another state (CT -> MASS). Another person in CT went to Virginia to get a Murano with his choices!

I have an SL AWD w/dynamic control (and thus everything else you need in order to get it). I actually have a Garmin Street Pilot III. It works nearly identical to the built-in system. The disadvantage is that the screen is smaller. The advantage is that you can take it anywhere, including between cars. Something to consider if you have more than one car or take frequent trips.
  • texamau1texamau1 Member Posts: 42
Thanks for correction, but my point is why there's such a different HP from the same engine? I thought the Murano is on of the Nissan's flagship vehicle. shouldn't it have the max HP power possible?
    Thanks
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
I think it's detuned because of the CVT. This is the highest HP/TQ ever used in a production vehicle with a CVT. Once it is proven that the cvt can handle more power the murano would bet it. Look on the bright side even with 240 and the cvt you still are in a tie with my 280 hp FX with 5 speed auto

We bought our Murano on 4/4/03 and just have a little over 4,000 miles. I liked the car from the beginning but had posted a few questions in another section about a funny feeling when you stop. This was explained fully by someone that was an engineer and had been studying the CVT for a number of years. I have liked the car better and better since that explanation.

Yesterday I was going about 35 mph on a four lane city street and a 2002 Chev Cavalier jumped out of a side street right in front of me. There was a blind spot for both vehicles so I didn't have but a second to hit the brakes before I hit her. I was not hurt except for bruises where the seat belt was and a bruise on my right foot. I think that was from having it turned a little sideways when I hit the brakes. Now I am sad about my car. We haven't gotten a written estimate yet but they had guessed somewhere between $8,000 and $9,000. There were parts hanging everywhere. The bar at the front (don't know what it is for" was also bent. Sure hope they can get the parts. Have been reading how long it takes for some to just get alternators replaced.

We had gone today and looked at a Chev Envoy, thinking we might just trade the Murano wrecked, but after reading the comparison here I have just about decided to have the car repaired.

Has anyone else had to have this type of damage repaired?
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
Why don't you see if they will total you out and give you a new murano. I mean that is almost a third of the cost of the car you will get killed at trade in time. if they don't total it at least get a diminished value claim when you add that (prob 4k) to the 10 it would take them to fix it + rental and everything else. They should total it and the sell it as salvage and it should be a wash. I know I prob wouldn't be comfortable driving a car with that amount of damage. Glad you are safe tho.
  • fgurleyfgurley Member Posts: 12
Final estimate ended up being $11,581.24 and they said that it would take at least a month to fix it. Looking for another Murano as I write.

at the risk of sounding like a big wimp
has anybody noticed there hands hurting
(numbness) after they drive. I just starting
noticing it and haven't seen it mentioned on the messgae boards.

Besides the above mentioned the only other
things I don't like are the bad blindspots
    and the crappy FM reception

Just got it last week and just took it for a long road trip. Drives incredible.

    I really like my Murano.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
go to a doctor...numbness in your wrists and hands can be from carpal tunnell syndrome...or you could just be white-knuckling it a bit...lol.
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
There is a TSB on the poor FM reception. Contact your dealer. It's been posted on other sites.

Can the Murano be purchased with a Satellite Radio option? I notice that there is a button labeled SAT, but it is not in the options list.

    Larry
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
    yes...comes with the NAV system.
  • dklaneckydklanecky Member Posts: 559
RE: SAT radio. No it doesn't come from the factory or the dealer, (on the 2003 models).

I have a 2003 Murano SE AWD with all the options and it took me over 3 months to finally get all the necessary parts together in order to install my own XM satellite radio.

You need a special cable (designed for Infiniti G35 sedan) that attaches to the back of the head unit, then you need the antenna and receiver.

Total cost of parts, is about $350, then the install is 3-4 hours for an average do it your selfer.

This is of course assuming that you want the SAT button on the Bose unit to fuction. If you want, you can always add an aftermarket FM modulated solution, but will not get the full digital sound.

Has anyone found a cheaper way to copy the keys for the Murano? My dealer tells me additional keys cost $80. The Key Fob cost another $60. But my question is more about the Key itself.

Also, for past cars, I had a thinner key, without the large plastic end, so that I could keep it in my wallet. This gave me great peace of mind. Is there anyway to make the key with out the plastic end or does the computer chip make this impossible?

    Thanks for your help,
  • 1sttimevolvo11sttimevolvo1 Member Posts: 189
My guess is the computer chip makes it impossible to have a standard key to keep in your wallet. Our Volvo came with 2 key/fob combos (switch-blade type key, similar to Volkswagen keys) and 1 valet key. The valet key is just a that.... a key only. But it has a large plastic area that I presume contains the ignition chip.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
this is right...its called the "immobilizer" anti theft system. its also the largest discount you can get on your insurance premium. if you want a key for your wallet, you can copy the metal alone. this will not, however, start the car. this will be an "oops, i locked the keys in the car" fix.

Last week I purchased my Murano in Connecticut.
    SL, AWD, Premuim Package, Sunroof

The MSRP before the options was $29,799
    After the options was $33,084

    I paid $29,457!
My dealer told me they made a mistake
and should have sold it to me for $31,500.
I told them I was going to lease it at first
and somebody screwed up the numbers.
I think I got a pretty good deal.

Considering the Nissan Murano SL, can someone tell me if the Bose Stereo system can play MP3 CD's that you have burned at home?

    Thanks,
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
no. you have to install a remote MP# player in the head unit. most auto-electric shops can do this.

This morning I was "attempting to back
out of my driveway (steep) and the
car could not make it up the driveway.
There seemed to be something wrong with
the transmission in reverse. I then shut the car
off and attempted it again....still no luck.
After going into house and cursing I then
tried to call the dealership to ask them what
the hell was wrong with the transmission.
The dealership did not answert so I went to try
th car again. This time I got up the driveway.
I'm still very concerned about this transmission. Can PLEASE anyone help???
  • dweiserdweiser Member Posts: 288
I don't mean to underestimate your intelligence, BUT, since it's a steep driveway, could the parking brake have been on?

Does anyone actually carry a laptop in their car and put it in the center console? The Murano advertises it - but only the computer (not the case) fits. I'm just curious if anyone uses it, and if so, what circumstances to you use the laptop in the car for?
  • rerenov8rrerenov8r Member Posts: 380
There is no advantage to putting the laptop into the center console bin. It is no sfer there then slid under the seat...

Makes for good ad copy though...

Don't some of the the pickups have a little desk built into the console? Seems like a similar useless feature...

    Hi all,
Just got back from the dealer with 3700 miles service. cost $120 ouch.. ( $100 for labor :( Any way, I notice the tires was not rotated, so I call the service manager up and ask him. He said the reason the tires was not rotate is because there are sensors on the tire which can not ever be rotated :( Is this true? So if any car equipped with the tire pressure monitor can not be rotated?
  • dklaneckydklanecky Member Posts: 559
Go to the Nissan service publications website:

    http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/default1.asp

    and buy a 24 hour subscription (it's $19.99).

You can then download all the service manuals you want (for all the Nissan vehicles you want).

For the Murano, the section called "WT Road Wheels and Tires" on page 36 and 37 tell how precisely to "register the transmitters" after rotating.

Just think how much fun you'll have handing the service manager a printout of his own service manual showing him exactly how to do what he says can't be done.

Be prepared for a long day of downloading if you don't have access to a faster the 56k speed. It took me about an hour to download the manual on a cable modem. You have to do each section individually so it's an attended process.

They're all in PDF files which make them very easy to search and print too.

I use mine all the time just for the knowledge they contain.
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
You got robbed on that service. My 3750 service on my infiniti FX35 was $36 and my 7500 was $69 that include the tire rotation (we also have the tire pressure system). I would find another dealer to go to.

I think I read somewhere that the Murano AWD will only function up to 30 mph, am I hallucinating or is that correct? I understand the vehicle will function in AWD up to 18 mph upon takeoff from stopped or at low speeds but I am not sure about the other piece. Any response to this as well as your experience with the AWD or the stabilty/VDC will be appreciated. We are considering all of these options.

I wish the stabilty was available with the cloth, I am tired to sticking to my leather seats all summer!
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
I think you can lock the Murano into a 50-50 AWD split but after 19 mph it reverts to normal AWD in which torque is sent to the axles i proportion to how they can use it.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
yes, the "locked-in" AWD is only good to 19 MPH...the automatic version is good at all speeds.
  • dweiserdweiser Member Posts: 288
Whichever Murano (FWD or AWD) you get, both are essentially FWD vehicles. The difference is that, for those Muranos having the AWD option, the vehicle automatically switches to AWD drive when it senses wheel slipage and becomes essentially a 50/50 AWD vehicle until the slipage ceases and then it automatically reverts back to FWD.
Also, AWD vehicles may be locked in AWD up to a maximum speed of 18 or 19 MPH.

re color choice: pewter with caffe latte or charcoal leather. any comments. is caffe latte closer to lighter tan or to darker camel color?
i heard that oil changes have to be done at dealer only bec of cvt, is it correct?
any comments re gasoline. is it premium only as suggested? can other grades be used
thanks in advance for the help

I am also looking to purchase a 2004 murano. I was told to expect first shipment around end Oct/beg Nov. However prices should be available by end of Sept. to order for approx. deliv. of mid Nov. The 2004 changes include Sunroof and touring packages and standard electric lumbar support for drivers seat. There may be a few color changes. I got this info. off other sites using search engine. You can get a 2003 at invoice now or get a 2004 for about 1000 over invoice. The '04 will be worth 2-3k more once driven off the lot. Maybe a few bugs will be worked out of the SUV with the '04. I experienced a constant vibration felt by my foot while on the accelerator which increases with acceleration. Anyone else notice this?
  • njexpressnjexpress Member Posts: 170
Cafe Latte is the color of clotted cream and it looks very swanky. It is not available standard with Pewter. You can find them in Gold and White commonly. All colors except Cabernet or copper can theoretically be ordered with latte leather.
Pewter / charcoal is easier to locate than special ordering, I am sure.
Oil changes: I always do them at the dealer, no matter what. Granted some noname oil change places save you some six dollars per oil change but, if I did them from the dealer, it speaks very well during the resale, with proper book keeping.
Gas: premium only, to the best of my knowledge. BTW, the Mo CLAIMS the best EPA ratings. Haven't had one but, I am done researchin' it. Just torn between the 03 or 04 dilemma plus VERY tempted by the RX!
No official word yet on the 04s. To me, It is just a question of when I sell my Honda Cr-V in the open market. I will start running ads next week and depending on how soon it sells, I will get an 04 or 03(only if 03 is well below invoice - If not, I would just go with the RX).
    Good Luck.

My 2003 Murano SE AWD with 4500 miles has been extensively tested with both premium and mid grade gasoline.

I'm getting better mileage with mid grade (89 octane) in my area than I get with premium (93 octane). The difference is small, less than 1 mpg calculated the old fashioned way, not observed through the trip computer.

I normally drive about 20 miles at a time, with the morning commute being mostly freeway at about 65, and the trip home at night, city streets, lots of stop and go.

I'd say equally split 50-50 between highway city.

    I'm averaging 20.5 mpg.

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano and began exploring the clear plastic coatings from XPEL and Invinca Shield to protect the front of my car. I've received complete price quotes from installers of both products and the price difference is significant. XPEL wants $1,000 and Invinca Shield wants $483 for the kit and installation. Can anyone tell me what justifies the cost difference? Is one dramatically better than the other?
