im not sure about MP3s, but i know that it has RDS (radio data system) that displays radio station information. this function also works to change your clock when you go over a timeline. (did it last week.)

awesome. I was looking at the 4 runners but they nickle and dime you for every option. The murano seems to come well equipped. I'm going to test drive one on Friday so hopefully I like it. I'm hoping it doesnt drive like the Highlander I took out. Sat too low and I didn't like the feel.
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
If they haven't changed it since the 2003 then the answer to both your questions is no. It does not play mp3s and it does not display the name and artist. It does however display the name of the radio station.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
the murano sits higher than the highlander, and feels more like a sports car on the road.

    however...

if you like the 4-runner better, you may want to look at a 2004 pathfinder instead.

What is everyone's opinions? I'll be test driving both today.

Previous vehicle was a 2000 Durango and I wanted to get away from the truck like ride. Although the Murano is built on a car frame, found the SE suspension to stiff for my liking so settled on the SL.

Can this thing set to off all the time. every time I start the car it turn on by itself. I have to turn it off myself.
  • tdevanetdevane Member Posts: 35
Exactly how many airbags does the Murano have?
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
why would you want it off?
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
    2 front, 2 side, and 2 curtain.

Does anyone has a bra/bug deflector, and side bar for their car? I know Nissan doesn't have them yet, and wondering if others would fit nicely. I want to take a long trip but afraid of the hood getting chipped by those gravel.
  • tdevanetdevane Member Posts: 35
i thought there were 4 curtains..back seat too?
  • tdevanetdevane Member Posts: 35
Purchased a 2004 SL over the weekend and they must of changed the stereo because it does display the name of the artist and song.

Speaking of airbags, what's with the airbag (SRS) tag on the headrest. I'm looking into having TV monitors put in, but the shop foreman said "Nope, the head restraints have air bags in them." I thought those tags were for the side bags, but there is a tag on the seat as well. I didn't think to call the dealer and the manual doesn't have any detail (that I could find)of the bags. And if there are bags in the headrest, how do they deploy? There are no wires or sensors that I found.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
the curtains are 1 per side...they are just large enough to cover both rows.
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
There are no airbags in the headrests. In my Murano the tag on the headrests says Active Head Rest. and not SRS. This simply indicates that the head rests are designed in such a way as to reduce the chance of neck injury in a collision. The tags for the side bags are in the seat (as you indicate) and the tags for the side curtain are at the top of the B-pillar.

The head rests do not have air bags in them. Nissan has went to active head restaints (volvo has them too) where in an accident the head restraints will tilt forward to help reduce whiplash. This iswhy you can not tamper with them. I would suggest an overhead entertainment option.

They did not switch the radio. It is a setting to display RDS or CD-INFO or not
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
clpurnell, are you sure about the radio? I have a 2003 Murano and the only RDS info that I have ever been able to view is the radio station information (i.e. the name of the radio station). I have rented a few cars where the artist and name of the currently playing song are displayed (for the same radio station). I was assuming that tdevane was talking about this (artist and song name and not the radio station name). If there is a way to display this info on the radio of the 2003 Murano could you tell me how? Thanks
  • rjardinerjardine Member Posts: 18
I checked with the dealer to see if this could be changed by them to default to OFF, but cannot be done.....which is ironic given the manual suggests it should only be on when you need it, not all the time.
  • tdevanetdevane Member Posts: 35
I have a 2004 Murano and it does display the Name of the Arist and Song. Granted it only does this on the stations that are transmitting this info.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
thats the key...the radio station has to transmit the info. before the RDS can display it.
  • titlextitlex Member Posts: 4
I searched and saw a previous question about this but not a definitive answer.

Does the Murano's back seat fit 3 normal size car/booster seats?

    Thanks.

My 2003 Murano displays the artist and song title information. It all depends on whether or not the station transmits the info.
  • farkel4251farkel4251 Member Posts: 8
I have a 2003 Murano and initially looked for a car bra but couldn't find one. I did find something even better than a car bra for my vehicle. Its something called X-Pel. Its a 3M clear plastic that you can have applied to your car and it does wonders for eliminating those annoying nicks and dings. To check it out go to XPEL.com. I have this on my Murano for 1 year and I'm well pleased.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
3M makes a similar product that many dealers offer.
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
I also have a 2003 Murano but have never seen anything other than the radio station name. I have had rental cars which have displayed song and artist info for a few local stations so I know that those stations are broadcasting that information but in my Murano the only info I see for those stations is the station name. Is there some option that I have to set to see that info? Is it possible that that info is only available on Muranos with the navigation system (which I don't have)?
  • tdevanetdevane Member Posts: 35
i Dont have the navigation and the name of artist and song appears. Not only does it need to be a station that transmits this but you need to be in a certain range to get it. There is one station where I receive the info in certain areas but not all.

Does anyone know when the 2005 Muranos will come out?

    Thanks!
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
Maybe this is another difference between the US and Canadian versions or maybe Nissan changed something part way through the 2003 model year because I have never seen artist and song info and I have spent alot of time very close to stations that I know transmit this info. I checked the radio and documention out last night and don't think that I have anything set that would turn this feature off. Any other Canadian owners out there who don't have the navigation system and do see the RDS artist and song info?
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
here in the states, the FCC governs radio transmissions. maybe the canadian version of our FCC doesnt allow it.
  • fezzfezz Member Posts: 4
Thanks farkel. Did you put it on yourself or was it professionally done? How much did it cost?
Is it easy enough to do it myself?
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
As I said, I know that the local radio stations put out the info because when I recently rented a GM it displayed all the song and artist info while the car was in my driveway. Just curious if and Canadian 2003 Muranos actually show the info.
  • dodoc2003dodoc2003 Member Posts: 20
I don't have the navigation system. Out of the 6 presets, I think 3-4 stations here in Chicago display the artist and titles.

I'm having a dispute over on another site as to whether the Murano has been a sales success for Nissan.

I say it's been a huge success, but I need some facts (better still a web link) to back up my claim. Has it met or exceeded Nissan's sales projections?

Anybody out there have that info? Thanks. :)

    Bob
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
Depends on what you consider a hugh success. So far this year (to the end of September) they have sold just under 43,000 units. More info can be found at www.nissannews.com.

The Jackson Clarion-Ledger usually follows Nissan news closely, at least for the 3 models made in nearby Canton.

I had my X-pel professionally done. I found a local certified installer on the X-pel site. You can do it yourself but I didn't have the time or the patience to do it. The kit costs $200 - $300 and with installation it was about $550 total. You can also look at Invincashield which is the same product just done by a different company. So far I have to admit that I like the product. I had a piece of tire hit the front of my hood and I didn't even have a scratch in the X-pel or the car.

I couldn't find a link, but Nissan's goals for the Murano was 50K per year.

    Hello,

Any chance you could forward the pages to me as well on changing the cabin air filter ?

    <rpguy3@msn.com>

(They're ATC 137 and IP 13, if you have the service manual.)

You also mentioned a service manual Did you buy one directly from Nissan or is there a 3rd party manual you could recommend ?
  • tdevanetdevane Member Posts: 35
I must say I'm impressed so far with the gas mileage. Just purchased my Murano 2 weeks ago and I've averaged 22 MPG both fill ups. It took me about 10k miles to break in my Tribute to get this mileage.

My experience (USA 2003 model) is that when I use the key fob to unlock the doors, the seats/pedals/mirrors automatically move to the position associated with that keyfob. I do not generally need to press the memory button(s) on the door.

To train my 2003 to do that, I first adjusted everything the way I wanted, then hit the memory buttons to store it, and then hit lock and unlock a couple of times on one keyfob within 30 seconds of storing the seat/pedals/mirrors memory. That was sufficient to train my Murano to adjust to that keyfob.

Regarding RDS, I thought at first I was only getting station call letters... until more stations in my area started sending song and artist information. I have concluded that I see whatever RDS information is being transmitted, and that varies wildly from station to station. Canadian radios might be different... maybe you need metric RDS? ;-)

2005 Murano info has appeared on the Nissan web site.

Does the Murano burn regular gas?
Or do you have to use higer grade?
    Thanks

Nissan recommends "premium for maximum performance" but it runs fine on regular.

I have heard second hand that someone who owns a 350Z with NAV said that you could view movies on DVD using the NAV system. Seems unlikely to me. Has anyone tried it or knows if it will work?

A local dealer conveyed two "facts" this weekend.

    1. 05 Muranos will not appear till January 05.

    2. 05 Muranos will be built in the US. 04s are made in Japan.

Anyone concerned that a US manufactured Murano might not be as well put together as a Japanese built one?
  • cheerioboy26cheerioboy26 Member Posts: 412
There has been no indication from Nissan that they are building the 05 Murano in the US. I believe the only Nissan 05 vehicle that will be built in the US that used to be built in Japan is the Pathfinder, which is out now.
  • dklaneckydklanecky Member Posts: 559
This rumour just won't go away.

I doubt seriously that it's true as there's no capacity in the Nissan plants in the US to handle the Murano volume (which is relatively low ~60,000 units year).

More importantly, from a business perspective, why would Nissan shut down an assembly line in Japan, that's been making Muranos for 2 full model years now and move it to the US?

Seems like a lot of un-necessary expense for what perceived gain?

I believe the Murano is being sold in Japan now for the first time as well as Europe.

I don't think your dealer has accurate information.

I'd have to see some current published (not message board rumours) articles that say this is happening before I'd believe it.
  • cheerioboy26cheerioboy26 Member Posts: 412
I think some poeple on another Murano forum have received their 05s - Canada perhaps, and another person there said they got one a service loaner. So, it sounds like they are out - as to where they are made - take a look at the VIN online - first character "J" = Japan. US built vehicles VIN begin with either a "1" or "3" I believe.
