juice - Although Maybach says it's customers are "conservative" I think they wouldn't mind if one of those "Big Puffy Diddly Rap Masters" used one in a video or lyric.

Their real problem is that their target market population is moving involuntarilly to Danbury, CT.

    sure it aint newark, nj?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's basically where my in-laws live. Darien, actually.

They should have a dealer in Stamford. 80% of their target clients drive by the area every day.

I don't know anything about the facililty in Newark, but I've heard that Danbury is pretty rough. Last year they had a riot when the warden shut down the back 9. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment!!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Oh, I misunderstood. Is that a big jail town?

CT is full of rich folks that work in NYC and commute by train. There are a couple of pockets of bad neighborhoods, though.

Danbury, CT is the site of a minimum security federal correctional institution. My understanding is that it has no walls, dorms, a few unarmed guards, and a nice view. Guys like Ken Lay (Enron) and Dennis Kozlowski (Tyco) will be spending the next 20 years there. It's not really posh but the people there are typically convicted of white collar crimes.

Yesterday on The Connection on NPR, they had a guest on who spent time there on an insider trading case. Interesting insight.

As for southern CT - Fairfield County is definitely a suburb of NYC. Plenty of money there. But the rest of the state can be pretty normal.

A question for all you homeowners out there: Does anyone have, or know someone else who may have, a tankless hot water heater? I am looking into replacing my hot water tank in my home, and a friend suggested it. I'm finding lots of information from manufacturers, but very little from end users. I know from past comments that some of the crew are rather handy, so I'm hoping somebody out here has heard of this.

    Thanks,

    Mark,

I don't know of anyone here in the US that has one, but pretty much every residence in Japan uses tankless heaters due to space restrictions. I've found that they work very well. The only downside is that the flowrate is usually limited to a certain amount -- good for a single shower running at one time. Then again, if you have an older home like mine, the water supply to the house isn't all that great so even a hot water tank won't help with high flowrates.

Here's an article I found from one of my favorite pubs:

    http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/tvprograms/asktoh/qaarticle/0,165- 88,213064,00.html

Also, try www.anonymizer.com to see if that can get you to the forums you want.

    Nice catch, Ken. Seems interesting.

Of course we're the type of house that has 3 showers and the dishwasher running all at the same time! :o)

One of my co-workers (Kenrick) runs a business on the side that sells on-demand tankless heaters. I've seen some of his applications in model homes and "homes of the future", and I have to say I am a big fan of the concept. They are not expensive, and will save a lot of money compared to a traditional tank heater (which you pay to heat 24/7). There are larger models that can provide hot water for an entire house, or smaller ones for point-of-use (under a sink, etc). Most of them are smaller than a phonebook!

The website is: http://www.arwa-tech.com/ . If you have any questions, I'd be glad to put you in contact with Kenrick, he's a real good guy.

I'm planning to use a tankless heater when we renovate my in-law's cabin.

Can you reduce the size of the nose flares on the Aztek, though? Now *that* would impress me.

Make the R1e convertible, and I'll sign that.

Is 'flare' the fire you see on the top of towers in a refinery area?

    signed, ignorant in NY....
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
yep, purging refining byproducts. the lower the flaring you see, the more efficient their processes. --or they're not producing much!

    Robr2-

Bosch is the manufacturer of the model I'm looking at (the Aquastar 240fx). It's enough to heat 2 showers at a time, or the equivalent. That's enough considering it is 3 of us in the house now, and in a few months it will be only 2 once my neice gets married.

Craig-thanks for the info. Your friends co. has electric heaters, I currently have a gas heated system. In that case, the Bosch is better (unless I want to totally redo my system).

    Ken,
from what I have learned so far, the Tankless system has been sold here in the states for a while now, particularily in the CA area. Here is a good site describing them:
    http://www.controlledenergy.com/
There was also an article in my local paper recently http://www.dulley.com/docs/678.htm that talked about them as well.

Thanks for the help. If anyone is interested, I'll let you know what quotes I get for the work.

Yeah, let us know how it goes. I also have natural gas and would probably go the same route when it comes time to replace my hot water heater (which is a big unwieldy unit in the attic).

As far as I can tell, the HW heater (and gas furnace) are just supported by the roof trusses and the 2nd floor wall framing underneath. Probably close to 1000 lbs of water in the heater, so I hope it holds!

My real complaint is that this arrangement puts the HW heater and furnace up in a cold attic all winter and the AC coils and ducting (which runs through the furnace blower) in the attic during the warm summer. I'm sure that costs me money!

    Craig
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
If it is a typical 50 gal heater, the weight would be around 500 lbs, or so (50 x 7.5lbs/gal, plus about 125 lbs for a gas fired heater). So weight is not as big an issue as potential leakage. They most likely put it on a drain pan with a hose to one of the plumbing vent pipes that go thru the roof.

But I agree about fighting nature. I have two separate systems - oil fired boiler in the basement feeding 4 zones of baseboards, plus a separate A/C unit in the attic. I cover all of the A/C vents in the winter, as cold air drops out of the vents, while warm air escapes to the attic. In the summer, the evaporator unit and duct work is fighting 120' attic temps.

That's pretty cool. Way to go on teaching your kids the important words first. :-)

Erina loves to sit on my lap in the driver's seat (while parked of course). She's not even a year old but she holds on to the steering wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and even reaches down to the shifter and tries to move it around! I have to get a photo of that someday.

When my wife and I were looking at houses in NC last year, that was one thing I noticed. A lot of the new houses had 2 air conditioning and heatig units, one in the basement and one in the attic. I thought it was strange, but from what Craig is describing, I guess not.

    Bob,

I actually agree with their second issue. I'm very concerned that all this "upmarket" stuff will take Subaru off my affordable list or worst raise the price to where there are other viable cars to consider.

Other carmakers are invading the Subaru niche. They first need to defend, maintain, and increase their niche before thinking of going upmarket. There are already tons of choices in the "upmarket" sector.

Bob - great article. The outback is my wife's down to the color. I cropped, added the caption "Mommy's car gets a new set of wheels" and e-mailed home. My 8 year old was all over it.

Jim - Bingo and Amen. I could not agree more!

Yeh, what Jim said.... I think they made excellent points in that article - the things that helped steer me to the OBW in the first place. Up there on my short list was the Audi Allroad, VW Passat 4matic, Volvo CrossCountry & Toyota Highlander. All overpriced for what you get.

  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
If you are not going to use the attic as living space, putting some of the hardware up there for the second zone (forced air system) makes sense. Otherwise, you would have to zone by individual trunk line as they left the basement and ran up thru walls to the second floor. It is easy to do that with water pipes in a baseboard system, but very difficult when you are dealing with 3.5x14" tin ductwork, or even flex trunks.

    Steve
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That last article is silly - it's like saying "please Subaru, limit your profits".

If Subaru had the AWD wagon niche all the themselves, they probably would not have to branch out. But with approximately 700 competitors now, they have to.

    Duh.

Most importantly, as pointed out on another thread several weeks ago, don't blame Subaru for a bad system.

The whole point of Subaru is to provide a sensible alternative to the SUV, especially for people who need some off road ability, cargo room and light towing but do not really need a truck.

However, Subaru competing against SUVs while being classified as cars is like entering a fight with one arm tied behind your back.

Now that over half the "cars" sold are light trucks, there needs to be one CAFE standard for manufactures to meet that is a blended average of current standards.

It is unfair to castigate Subaru for trying to be competitive when their vehicles burn less gas, produce less pollutants, and meet higher safety standards than light trucks.

I for one think the new Outback XT (along with the purchase of a decent used utility trailer) will provide enough capability to get me out of my less efficient and rollover prone 4wd pick-up truck.
  • njswamplandsnjswamplands Member Posts: 1,760
all of the vehicles should have the same safety basics, if it is gonna be on the public roads, like side door protection, bumpers, etc.

subaru does all of these things unlike what the american tank manufactures did/do? on their suvs.

when my 10.5 year old unit needs replacing. Can it go in the attic where the current one is and work off the same lines and gas line? What does the 240 model that supports multiple users cost? What about cost on the single user model? I know there are install costs etc. to consider but just wondering about purchase price amounts right now. Thanks.
