When you d/l, you'll typically see speeds reported in KB/second or MB/second. For our 3mbit Cable Modem service at home, I'll typically see between 250 and 350 KB/sec.

Plus, each site can be slower/faster than others. And you also are utilizing other backend networks to get to those servers, which may be slower/faster at that time. (just read this as other traffic)

    Steve,

I have a feeling the test sites are optimistic becasue they may only be doing a ping type test or sending a few packets of data. Transferring large files is probably a whole different ball game. In addition, your network performance will be potentially limited by the server at the other end. If they have a slow link or are swamped with multiple users, that's going to set the transfer rate.

I was having lousy cable performance a while back which was a result of slow DNS lookups. Network transfer speeds were still good once the lookup was completed, but that was little consolation after waiting 5-10 seconds for a DNS lookup!

Oh I will have fun with it, you can count on it.

Can't wait for warmer weather to get stuck in.

First order of business will be to check the condition of the timing belt followed by an oil and filter change.

    Steve,

I use the following website for all broadband related items:

    http://www.dslreports.com/

Contrary to it's URL name, it's not just for DSL. Great forum with knowledgable people, lots of tools and info on how to tweak your broadband settings.

Thanks, Ken. Yep it is all in the settings! That was what I was refering to when I mentioned it took some effort. Had to get some tech support when it ran fine for 2 hrs, then quit. Security settings were too tight.

9-2x prices were just plain set too high. Even high residuals and subsidized leases could not get volume to 1/3rd the level forecast.

Pat: not a bad beater, though I think it'll be anything but a beater once you get your hands on it.

I think those had the 1.6l engine, right? Hatchback. I had looked at one in 1991. I think back then it had around 108hp.

Even Bentley is going AWD? I guess they want people coming out of SUVs to have an option.

Gladiator, really? I dunno if that would do much to help ailing Jeep.

If you haven't seen one in person, just wait...

Photos don't really let you understand how low and sleek it is. Some even make it look ugly.

In person, it has presence, a real low stance. It's stunning.

I thought the Acura NSX concept was the same way, you had to see it to understand how low-slung it was.

Well, I'm giving up on cable, and switching to DSL.

My service was great at first, excellent actually. I was at times exceeding 2 Megs per, and it was consistently fast.

For the last year or so we've been struggling, speeds are down in the 200-600 KB range and even then it's so inconsistent we don't know if it'll work from one day to the next.

They say as more people join the service drops, well if so I think everybody in the 'hood has joined, service has become pathetic.

We tried DSL about 4-5 years ago and it just never worked, but I'm ready to try again. Even if I only get 600-800, but consistent, I'll be happy.

Cable here is $43 per month, DSL just $30, so I may end up paying less for more consistent and fast service.

I tried all the tweaking tools, it helped the peak speed but not the consistency. I've had it with cable. My wife can't even work from home! She's ready to go back to dial-up. It's slow but at least it works every time.

    Ugh.

DSL for $30?!?! You sure that's not for "DSL Lite"? They offer the "lite" plan around here but it's only advertised to be 250 KB.

but at this point I'll take it! LOL

I'd say we average 200 KB, if it's working at all. And it's weird, it's working now, but wasn't 5 minutes ago. It "stalls" for about 30-45 seconds at a time. It's unbearable.

was skiing yesterday and about 1" of snow had fallen when i left. driving down the highway window was getting crapped up from all that chem stuff they put on the road.

went to use my washer fluid to clear the windshield and nothing. all the way home to bloody thing would not work.

of course after a good nites rest in the garage the thing would squirt happily. so either it froze up outside ( temp in tens ) or it got clogged by snow from windshield wipers.

now being a man of safety and knowing how those cars going the other way on a 2 lane highway can throw snowballs on the windshield, this is a serious safety concern for me. i mean this is like trade in the car serious.

will try again this saturday it looks like.

as always comments more than welcome

Juice, who is your cable provider?

I had unbearably slow performance from Cox about a month or so ago after years of good speeds. They sent out a tech who couldn't do much. Then I posted on the Cox usenet group and was contacted by a knowledgeable tech who checked my connection remotely and made a couple recommendations. One was to replace my aging Toshiba 1100 modem with something newer that supports DOCSIS 2.0. If that didn't work, there was additional tuning they could do to improve my RF signal levels (Rx, Tx, etc). Thankfully, the new modem (Moto Surfboard) did the trick. For some reason, the older Toshiba modems have problems with the DOCSIS 2.0 spec that most cable providers are using now. BTW, all theses issues are on the analog "RF" side of the process (upstream of the modem), so networking type tweaks won't do anything to help. That's important to remember with cable modems -- anything upstream of the modem is just RF. It's really only a TCP/IP based network downstream of your cable modem and on their end where they go to the internet. In between is just radio signals basically.

I just found out yesterday that we have a 3rd cable/telecom option coming into my town - Verizon. They just completed a new fiber optic upgrade in town - they're the incumbent local telco already in New England.

So I'll have choices from Verizon, RCN, and Comcast for cable, internet, and telephone. Finally, real competition.

    juice -

I had Comcast out a few weeks ago for my sometimes on, sometimes off cable modem. They thought it was the modem (Moto Surfboard that I purchased), but it turns out it was a few bad cables and splitter outside. They replaced the line from the house to the pole (and a splitter) and it works great now. I was on the verge of switching to DSL, but Comcast is giving me one month's credit (plus $20 x 2 for late repairmen). Did they test the signal just before the modem?

    swampy -

I highly recommend Prestone Windshield Melt. It's pretty strong, so I only use half the bottle (they say full bottle). You add it to whatever is in your reservoir.

    http://www.prestone.com/products/25.htm

If linky no worky, go to prestone.com. Click Products/Windshield Products.

5 blocks from the White House, right on Pennsylvania Ave.

swampy: try the windshield washer solutions that offer more freeze protection. Or just replace what's in there now, the alcohol might have evaporated.

I rented a Mercury Tracer one time that had that problem and it was a NIGHTMARE. I went to drain it and found a giant cube of ice in the washer reservoir!

Craig - we have Comcast. I've called on maybe 4 different occasions. Any fix is temporary.

They sent guys that claimed to have found cut cables, but then it's good for a week and back to dismal.

Funny thing is we have that exact model, Toshiba 1100. But I'm not sure I want to invest any more in a service we're so frustrated with. And that still doesn't explain the inconsistency.

But if Verizon DSL fails us, that would be what I'd look at next, so thanks for the tip.

coming home today in the outback .. I had washer fluid on the right but not on the left .. I think it was MY fault that when I had cleared the windshield earlier I pushed some snow up against it and then drove only a short distance which allowed some of the snow to melt and clog it up ... I'll see how it is when I go out to go to class tonight ... I've GOT to be able to clean the windshield ... the roads are awful with the salt and mess right now ...

We saw something in our stuff the other day from Comcast that they can 'upgrade' their system with no thought that it may or may not be compatible with what the customer currently have in their homes ... we have experienced what juice was describing .. used to be blazingly fast .. now it's .. mediocre .. we're thinking of moving to something like DSL ...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Might be your modem, too, then.

Wife is thinking about calling Comcast to see if they'll at least provide a free replacement modem. The only other alternative would be them losing our business.

Did you buy the modem or are you renting it from Comcast?

If it's your's then rent one from Comcast for a month or two. Should be around $3 per month. If it's a rental then see if they will swap it out with a new rental.

I would look into switching the modems as well. I had a very similar problem; I went to the Comcast office and switched modems at no cost. Now, 3.1mb on average.

    Good luck.

I own the modem. I'm sure they'd give me one if I demanded it, rather than losing a customer.

But it's come down to the principal of the matter. They knew all along I had a Toshiba 1100 modem, in fact they always ask that at the beginning. So why didn't tech support say anything the 4-5 times I called?

I worked at a Help Desk for 5 years or so, and believe me, we had to know stuff like that. When you had a quick fix, it was great, problem solved. I still can't believe they didn't know.

So, terrible tech support, even if I fix the modem I have to continue living with that.

Hey folks, haven't been around for a while. Only been lurking past week. We had temps of -20 to -30 over Christmas holidays, then it got cold. Didn't get over -30C somedays, and nightimes into the -40's. Remember, at those temps, F and C are about the same. So the cold snap ended very suddenly. Last Sunday am it was -36 and by 11 am Monday it was above freezing and raining. That was about a 70F temperature swing in 30 hours. It has now been rain/freezing rain for 4 days. Schools closed, highways closed. Nothing but wet ice everywhere. I think my brakes must be broken, when I press on them, they just vibrate and the car doesn't slow down at all. :-O.

Boy that new Benign Ex is surely stimulating conversation! Who says Subie owners are staid and don't like new things?!? My $.02 would be that the listed pricing is appropriate for what's being offered. What remains to be seen is whether or not the buying public will look at it. Also be interesting to see if SOC continues to fleece us with a 55% premium over US prices when there is only a 20% difference in the exchange rate. That would make it a 62k vehicle in Canada that is high. Sub 50k would be more reasonable, and would more closely reflect the value.

I AGREE with the 'terrible tech support' ... when we DO call in, they have to go down a 'checklist' even if I've already DONE all that stuff ... and then they get to the bottom and it's ... huh .. well . .. it's not covered here ... must be your modem ...

nope, we can cannot the other computer here directly through the modem ...

    well .. maybe it's the cable ...

nope, we switched out the cables for the one that we knew worked ....

    comcast is NO help ...

    G'day

We have had intermittent cable troubles since first installed five years ago. Telco never believed us when we complained about connections disappearing after wet weather. Recently an unrelated problem meant that we had to call tech support. A lovely guy turned up, fixed the immediate problem and altered the frequency that the modem connects on. He mentioned that there are various connection frequencies and gave specs for power levels and signal to noise ratios. It's worth checking the web for links to the manufaturer of the cable modem as a lot of them have instant diagnostics to test the modem. eg Motorala Surfboard at http://192.168.100.1/startup.html

    Cheers

Well, I called in and they sent a tech out to my house on several ocassions, only to find out later that there were large scale network issues that were causing the problem and it was not even remotely an issue in my house. And in my recent case, neither tech support or the guy they sent out knew about the issues with the 1100 modem -- I had to get in touch with a true geek to find out. So, overall, I am not too impressed with the first line of tech support with Cox cable. I imagine it's similar with Comcast.

I don't even tell them I have a wireless router or a Mac when I call in. Even though TCP/IP is universal, the tech guys are so PC centric that I just pretend to have a PC and go along with the charade. Even pretend to reboot when they ask me to!

I used to have @home but I dropped it when AT&T bungled the transition. I've been using Covad DSL for a few years now and performance has been nothing but steady. Luckily I live close enough to a Telco so I get about 2.4 Mbps or about a 300 KB/sec download speed.

I have been on Verizon DSL for about 2 years now. Never a single problem.

I had issues with setting up my wife's computer to access her own e-mail account - it kept getting all sorts of errors. Believe it or not, a Verizon tech walked me through changing the settings on the router which I had purchased separately. He asked my what kind, which model, walked me through some advanced settings, and voila it worked. Can't say the same for Comcast .... Rob M.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They never even hinted it was the modem. To be honest I'd have been happy to change it if I thought they knew what they were doing at tech support.

Read a review recently for some over-priced luxury vehicle (the name of which escapes me) and the reviewer mentioned that the only option was a 6-spd manual at a cost of $800. Now that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a manual costing more than an automatic but the article went on to say that the overall price of the manually equipped vehicle was actually $700 less than the auto due to $1500 in savings from avoiding the gas guzzler tax. So my question is: can a manual actually cost more to produce or is the manufacturer just sticking it to the buyer and pocketing the approx $1500 profit?

    -Frank
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Good question Frank, and I don't know the answer. The first thing that comes to mind, is that for a luxury vehicle, manuals are very rare. Therefore the engineering/manufacturing costs are spread over very few vehicles. So it is possible—that in this market segment—a manual could be more expensive than an automatic.

    Bob
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
For example, a Corvette comes standard with a 6 speed MT. An AT is optional and is no charge. But, I'd safely guess that the 6 speed is probably the more expensive of the 2 trannies for it.

I'd imagine the Impreza STi's 6-speed manual transmission is more expensive to manufacture than the 4-speed automatic found in other Imprezas.

Currently tied to one PC with no glitches. I decided to wait for about two weeks before adding the wireless router (Linksys G) and bringing the rest of the house on line. Just re-read the literature for setup of encryption, IP addresses, etc. Technology is forcing all of us to become more of a network tech guy...
