Bob
brian, I have no idea where you placed the mic nor what type of mic it was, but to me that does not sound like an exhaust leak. that sounds much more like valvetrain noise. sewing machine = valvegear, distinct "pssht" air leak noise = exhaust
DOHC? how many miles on the engine?
here's a better way to determine if it's an exhaust leak or not. valvetrain noise only varies based on rpm, but exhaust noise definitely varies with load and rpm both. get to 2,000 rpm at part throttle and mash the gas. if the noise immediately gets a lot louder, it's exhaust. if not it's something else, probably valvetrain although I suppose it's technically possible that something else is making that noise.

27k on the '02 MPV, M1 used exclusively, at least until this additional change to Motorcraft's synth blend.
-Brian
wait '02 with 27k? this is all academic then right? bring it in for warranty work!!!
~Colin
I too worried it was a lifter or valve or adjuster, but those noises are usually TICK TICK metal type of noises. The noise our MPV was making was not metallic, but more air FFFFT FFFFT. Some '00-'01 had a manifold bolt snap causing some movement, I'm hoping it's not something like that. (plus, that was the older 2.5L Duratec V6)
Should be updated tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm driving a bright red Neon :surprise:
-Brian
-Brian
~Colin
ps, is that neon an SRT-4? :P
The reason I had asked about M1 in the F-XT forum was pertaining to valvegear noise. When I first heard the noise, it indeed sounded like the 'sewing machine'. But, upon listening closely (especially on the lower half of the engine) and even after changing the oil (again), you could hear the difference (I was quite surprised in fact as I hadn't read/heard about something like this on the '02+). I apologize the recordings weren't able to capture it well. Hopefully we'll hear something this morning from the dealer on it.
-Brian
And power front windows with rear roll-ups. :confuse:
SRT-4 is a different animal, in fact they don't even use the Neon label on it.

DW gets my F-XT until her MPV is back.

So, any guesses to the cause? Service guy called back again - cracked exhaust manifold. What made it hard to trace was they'd zero in on an area they suspected to be cracked, but by that time the engine had warmed the manifold to the point where the crack closed enough to escape view. So, they'd have to let it cool down completely again and rinse and repeat :P
On the MPV place I visit, there's mention of a few similar cases, but all on the '00-'01 models with the 2.5L V6. None that I could find with the 3.0L V6. Guess I'm the first.
-Brian
Wow Colin, you're ruthless today!

Bob: GOOD. Wife wants one, but I don't want to pay $2000 for occasional directions.
I'd get her a Garmin or similar portable unit but she doesn't want wires running down the dash.

Just dropped $400 on four new tires for my OBS. Ouch! Only one really needed replacing, but there are no replacements for the RE92's around here for even a reasonable price. $220 installed for one tire!! V-rated tires sure command a premium it seems. That, and lots are on back-orders. I hate unexpected expenses like that, especially on a vehicle whose lease ends next year. Oh well, could be worse, right? I just needed to vent this morning. Back to everyones regular program.

Ken
however, four tires totalling $400 mounted is not bad at all. what kind of tires did you get?

What kills me is that I turn this car in in a year. Someone is going to get pretty new tires. However, since I've never been exactly thrilled with the RE92's, and I might have had to replace them all by next year anyway, I suppose biting the bullet now isn't the worst thing I could do. Has anyone here got an opinion on Kuhmo's?
-Dan-
Not if you take it for a couple of runs in autocross or the track. :shades:

anyone else seen one or got one?
intel has the blue guys can SoA have the helmeted guys?

Thing about Dells is if you're not in the native resolution they have a shadow, i.e. they are not that sharp.
Try before you buy.
-juice
Yes, your wife. :-)
Swap them with the '05 RS before you turn in the '04 OBS. They're the same size, right?

P.S. Almost caught up after two weeks at sea plus lack of time last week to surf the net.
Saw a 5 pass B9 at the dealer while picking up the MPV as well (Mazda/Subaru/Suzuki dealership). Was the light silver color. Saw it go past as I entered the MPV, it was really quiet, would have thought the dual exhaust would give it some life.
Anyone seen Episode III? Any tidbits to watch for? Don't worry about ruining the film, I think we all know what happens.
-Brian
Haven't seen SW:E3 yet - kids have a 4-day weekend from school coming up, so between BBQ at my sister's & the obligatory over-the-river-and-thru-the-woods trip to my MIL's in Colville & my having to work on Sunday (whew!), we're gonna try to see it.
Cheers!

IMHO the dell flatpanels are crap. They have very poor image quality in a variety of ways. But, if you use the merchant discount coupons easily found on the web, they are a really good value. (like $479 or less for the $749 regular priced 20") Just another case of 'you get what you pay for'.
~Colin
colin. this past weekend you could stack that 35% off coupon on the dell 20" 2005fpw with $90 off one bringing that flat panel down to less than $400

Then there are some strange hidden features that can help. For instance, my ThinkPad only has a max display driver output of 1024x768, and an analog VGA connector on its side. Put plug the laptop into the docking station, and now it has a DVI connector available. I was initially disappointed when I ran the analog VGA to the ThinkVision monitor (1600x1200 native ??), and could not get a crisp image with only 1024x768 driving it. Tried the DVI cable, hit the 'optimize display' button, and it locked right in! Stuff they don't tell you in the manual...
Steve
just wanted to know if anyone on here has some real world experience with it.
and yes thank god for the optimize button
If you're shopping for a bigger one, I'd first find out what the native resolution is. Try the monitor at that resolution, that's where it will look best.
But then try it on other resolutions. Some folks might find the fonts too small at really high res. Try 1024x800 just to see what it looks like. Is it sharp? Do you see a shadow around the text?
The Dell FPs are poor at non-native resolutions in my experience. Even with updated drivers, different O/Ss, you name it.

i got the 1280x1024 on the 18" and is nice and easy on the eyes as things are larger ( ggggrrrrrrrrr getting older )
i wont select the 20" 1600x1200 as it is not large enough text for these eyes.
the 24" is 1900x1200 which should be easy enough to read
I have kids' games that go back to 640x480! :surprise:

Of course, they are significantly more expensive too. I guess it depends on what you are planning to use it for? If it's just general computer stuff you'd probably do fine with any Dell-Samsung-Viewsonic-Sony etc. If you're into computer graphics and photography- you'll need significantly more.
