Mike, these two links addresses about the Ridgeline's unibody/boxed frame combo. I would assume it does the same for the new Suzuki SUV.

    that's one slow webserver. :-P

brian, I have no idea where you placed the mic nor what type of mic it was, but to me that does not sound like an exhaust leak. that sounds much more like valvetrain noise. sewing machine = valvegear, distinct "pssht" air leak noise = exhaust

DOHC? how many miles on the engine?

here's a better way to determine if it's an exhaust leak or not. valvetrain noise only varies based on rpm, but exhaust noise definitely varies with load and rpm both. get to 2,000 rpm at part throttle and mash the gas. if the noise immediately gets a lot louder, it's exhaust. if not it's something else, probably valvetrain although I suppose it's technically possible that something else is making that noise.

it was recorded with my pocketpc, and the quality is 22khz mono. mic was placed on the ground just in front of the radiator. In person, it sounds more 'pfffft' than sewing machine like, and does get louder with load (that's what the pftt1.wav was supposed to demonstrate as I shifted from park to drive and held the brake). But, it goes away as the manifold warms.

27k on the '02 MPV, M1 used exclusively, at least until this additional change to Motorcraft's synth blend.

I have never ever seen an exhaust leak that goes away. You probably have a bad hydraulic lash adjuster, if equipped, or a flat hydraulic lifter.

wait '02 with 27k? this is all academic then right? bring it in for warranty work!!!

    ~Colin
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Yep, it's gotta be a warranty fix. You can hear it under load once warmed, at least a little bit. Just much more noticeable at cold, even after sitting for 30 minutes. The exhaust itself is louder near the engine, it is noticeable. Even the service writer noticed it when I brought it in this afternoon.

I too worried it was a lifter or valve or adjuster, but those noises are usually TICK TICK metal type of noises. The noise our MPV was making was not metallic, but more air FFFFT FFFFT. Some '00-'01 had a manifold bolt snap causing some movement, I'm hoping it's not something like that. (plus, that was the older 2.5L Duratec V6)

Should be updated tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm driving a bright red Neon :surprise:

but all I had to go on was the recording. IMO in the recording there's no evidence of an air noise. what came through sounds like the mechanical "sewing machine" noise associated with valvegear.

    ~Colin
ps, is that neon an SRT-4? :P
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
No, the Neon is just a plain ol' base model, A/C and 4sp AT from Enterprise.

The reason I had asked about M1 in the F-XT forum was pertaining to valvegear noise. When I first heard the noise, it indeed sounded like the 'sewing machine'. But, upon listening closely (especially on the lower half of the engine) and even after changing the oil (again), you could hear the difference (I was quite surprised in fact as I hadn't read/heard about something like this on the '02+). I apologize the recordings weren't able to capture it well. Hopefully we'll hear something this morning from the dealer on it.

They had a 3 speed auto for a while.

And power front windows with rear roll-ups. :confuse:

SRT-4 is a different animal, in fact they don't even use the Neon label on it.

Oh joy! I get to keep the Neon (with manual windows on all 4 doors) for the weekend.

DW gets my F-XT until her MPV is back.

oh man you're doin hard time now. and come monday, wifey will be addicted to the FXT power and you'll be slumming in the MPV :)

  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
What do you mean by Monday, DW is already addicted to the F-XT and wouldn't mind a L-GT, or even a Tribeca. But, she also wants a bigger house within a few years, so she's sticking it out with her MPV, which she does still like.

So, any guesses to the cause? Service guy called back again - cracked exhaust manifold. What made it hard to trace was they'd zero in on an area they suspected to be cracked, but by that time the engine had warmed the manifold to the point where the crack closed enough to escape view. So, they'd have to let it cool down completely again and rinse and repeat :P

On the MPV place I visit, there's mention of a few similar cases, but all on the '00-'01 models with the 2.5L V6. None that I could find with the 3.0L V6. Guess I'm the first.

They need to put a switch in there that turns off the boost when you lend the car to your spouse. ;)

Bob: GOOD. Wife wants one, but I don't want to pay $2000 for occasional directions.

I'd get her a Garmin or similar portable unit but she doesn't want wires running down the dash.

    (whine mode on)

Just dropped $400 on four new tires for my OBS. Ouch! Only one really needed replacing, but there are no replacements for the RE92's around here for even a reasonable price. $220 installed for one tire!! V-rated tires sure command a premium it seems. That, and lots are on back-orders. I hate unexpected expenses like that, especially on a vehicle whose lease ends next year. Oh well, could be worse, right? I just needed to vent this morning. Back to everyones regular program.

I'm not surprised, but I'm sure there will be quite a spread of NAV unit quality and functionality as they go mainstream. Kind of like AWD systems.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
the RE92 is definitely not worth buying again from a performance or value point of view.

however, four tires totalling $400 mounted is not bad at all. what kind of tires did you get?

Don't sweat it, you probably improved the handling of your car by 50% with the simplest and most cost-effective mod available. Brilliant. :shades:

I got the Kumho ECSTA ASX KU-21, an ultra-high performance all-season. As I said, $400 plus tax OTD. This is a W-rated tire, as I couldn't find any V-rated except for WAY expensive Michelins in the area. If I wanted to wait a week, I could have gotten something else, but for the money I think they'll be fine. My wife did the running this morning to get it done while I'm at work, so I haven't driven it yet.

What kills me is that I turn this car in in a year. Someone is going to get pretty new tires. However, since I've never been exactly thrilled with the RE92's, and I might have had to replace them all by next year anyway, I suppose biting the bullet now isn't the worst thing I could do. Has anyone here got an opinion on Kuhmo's?

True, true. That could be a lot of fun, actually. My luck is I'd love doing it, then want to keep the car. I wonder how fast an OBS can get? Hmmm... ;)

I've got the Kumho ECSTA ASX on both my Subaru and Mazda. I like them. Good handling for an all season, pretty quiet and very reasonable price-wise.

Make sure you "test drive" them, we have Dell FP1801 and FP2100 I'd rate them Poor and Average, respectively.

Thing about Dells is if you're not in the native resolution they have a shadow, i.e. they are not that sharp.

    Try before you buy.

    Yes, your wife. :-)

Swap them with the '05 RS before you turn in the '04 OBS. They're the same size, right?

P.S. Almost caught up after two weeks at sea plus lack of time last week to surf the net.

Got *my* F-XT back from the DW. Driving the MPV after the Neon was a much welcome relief as well. MPV had a stress fracture in the exhaust manifold, all is better now, it's quiet again. Warranty repair, I'm figuring $600+ at least on Mazda's bill. DW is happy, that's the important thing.

Saw a 5 pass B9 at the dealer while picking up the MPV as well (Mazda/Subaru/Suzuki dealership). Was the light silver color. Saw it go past as I entered the MPV, it was really quiet, would have thought the dual exhaust would give it some life.

Anyone seen Episode III? Any tidbits to watch for? Don't worry about ruining the film, I think we all know what happens.

Know what you mean, Brian - my wife is always happy to get her own car back. (Can't imagine why - she gets to drive the Subaru when I have hers!)

Haven't seen SW:E3 yet - kids have a 4-day weekend from school coming up, so between BBQ at my sister's & the obligatory over-the-river-and-thru-the-woods trip to my MIL's in Colville & my having to work on Sunday (whew!), we're gonna try to see it.

    Cheers!

interesting... well if you're happy with the FP1801 then you'd probably like the 24" also.

IMHO the dell flatpanels are crap. They have very poor image quality in a variety of ways. But, if you use the merchant discount coupons easily found on the web, they are a really good value. (like $479 or less for the $749 regular priced 20") Just another case of 'you get what you pay for'.

ok i am open to thoughts, except that fords are not problematic, what do you recommend colin? juice? anyone?

colin. this past weekend you could stack that 35% off coupon on the dell 20" 2005fpw with $90 off one bringing that flat panel down to less than $400
  • damish003damish003 Member Posts: 303
Dave, I like the way you think! Swapping them on to my wifes 05 RS sounds like a great idea. Lease company gets back crappy Potenza RE92's, wife gets better tires, and I spend no more than I have. You're a genius! Love it!

I think the 'native resolution' issue is a problem for all TFT displays. Tube displays more naturally allowed the uneven pixel spillover, while the more 'digital' nature of thin film transistor driven LCD makes a mess of it. I have a Dell 1901 and a Sceptre 17" at home, an IBM 21" on my desk at work, and a number of other brands scattered around our lab. Hunt thru the available video modes 765x1024, 11somethingx12something,1024x1280, 1200x1600, etc. and refresh rates until you find something that clicks. It also helps if you have a video card that is DVI (digital video interface) compliant and monitor that has DVI in. It uses a different cable from the 15 pin VGA, but seems to reduce the shadowing.

Then there are some strange hidden features that can help. For instance, my ThinkPad only has a max display driver output of 1024x768, and an analog VGA connector on its side. Put plug the laptop into the docking station, and now it has a DVI connector available. I was initially disappointed when I ran the analog VGA to the ThinkVision monitor (1600x1200 native ??), and could not get a crisp image with only 1024x768 driving it. Tried the DVI cable, hit the 'optimize display' button, and it locked right in! Stuff they don't tell you in the manual...

i only run at native resolution, got a nice nvidia video card and run dvi. so the dell fp1801 is good, just looking for more real estate and the dell 2405fpw seems to provide outstanding real estate for the costs and seems to have good reviews.

just wanted to know if anyone on here has some real world experience with it.

and yes thank god for the optimize button
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
For the FP1801, the native resolution is 1280x1024.

If you're shopping for a bigger one, I'd first find out what the native resolution is. Try the monitor at that resolution, that's where it will look best.

But then try it on other resolutions. Some folks might find the fonts too small at really high res. Try 1024x800 just to see what it looks like. Is it sharp? Do you see a shadow around the text?

The Dell FPs are poor at non-native resolutions in my experience. Even with updated drivers, different O/Ss, you name it.

i use to have a 15" running at 1600x1200, which was ok until my eyes hurt after everyday.

i got the 1280x1024 on the 18" and is nice and easy on the eyes as things are larger ( ggggrrrrrrrrr getting older )

i wont select the 20" 1600x1200 as it is not large enough text for these eyes.

the 24" is 1900x1200 which should be easy enough to read
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Don't just look at the size of the text, look at the quality as well, at any given size. Keep in mind some applications prefer to be at certain resolutions so you might change it once in a while.

I have kids' games that go back to 640x480! :surprise:

are really nice. You can get a 30" which will cost significantly more than your computer! But it's nice- it's like having a wall infront of you!

Of course, they are significantly more expensive too. I guess it depends on what you are planning to use it for? If it's just general computer stuff you'd probably do fine with any Dell-Samsung-Viewsonic-Sony etc. If you're into computer graphics and photography- you'll need significantly more.

Good for you. I am sure if you are running DVI at native, you will be quite happy with it. And if not, Dell seems to be good about standing behind their products, so you can always return it. I don't think you can loose either way....
