Karen, I "updated" unless I made the wrong choice. Mike, I'll let you know.
-Dennis
Dennis: Glad to see you back, PC trouble and all.
Stephen: Did I miss something? You're working again. Not sure whether to congratulate you or not, but at any rate it gives you more mod money! ;-)
Ed
Air Suspension
Wheel Bearings
Electric PS pump
*some* Trannies on the SVX
None of the gadgetry items were an issue on them for repairs.
Items that should be included from the XT6/SVX era:
Telescopic/tilting/memory Steering Column (it's not electronic, all manual)
Winter Mode Wiper switch
Speed sensitive variable intermittent wipers
Lighted ignition switch and door keyhole
Folding rear seats on sedans/coupes
Auto-up drivers window switch
Variable Valved Shocks
Oil Pressure and Volts Gauges
"manual" controller for the AT (you hit a button to start in 2nd gear for winter driving, otherwise the "2" spot will do 1st and 2nd)
Heated outside mirrors
Rear wiper on Sedan/coupe
These are all non-hightech items that could easily distinguish subaru above the rest of the field and they have in their parts bin!
-mike
Maybe we're still feeling the effects of that. Plus the fact the SoA (and/or FHI) has underestimated the N. American Subaru consumer for several years.
-Dennis
It would be hard for a Japanese company to "fold" as it were considering the way they handle debt and stocks.
But Subaru of America was near closing up shop after the SVX fiasco and before the Outback / Paul Hogan redemption.
-Colin
It should be easier to save up for STi springs/struts or Prodrive springs, and the Vishnu Stage 1. :-)

There was a book written precisely on this subject, but I can't recall the title. I just finished reading "More Than They Promised" by Thomas Bonsall, re the demise of Studebaker, so my mindset is still on how automakers fold. My own personal bias aside, it seems Studebaker didn't have to die. SoA quite obviously hasn't, but it cannot afford to stagnate.
Stephen: then yes, congrats are in order. I take it the Kirkland commute hasn't been a killer.

Wow, the SVX sure was loaded with features. We could use some of that stuff in our current models!
Ken
Ed: No, the commute hasn't been bad, about 40mins one-way. I hate the 520 floating bridge and refuse to take it regardless of traffic or not. I go north on Greenwood Ave to 145th and then head east to Lake City Way which goes up and around the north end of Lk Washington. Just after the top of the lake I take a right and head through Juanita then east on 124th. Take this all the way into work on 126th. No freeway or bad bumper-to-bumper traffic. :-)

6/100 added security gold plus - suburu.
My car is a 2001 Legacy GT (13,600 miles) just bought it from DaimlerChrysler. I'm not sure which warranty is the better one. Price is $800 diff, daimler is higher but the price isn't my real dilemna. I want to purchase the better warranty. Anyone familiar with warranties please let me know what to look for. p.s. I own two Suburu's now, my first one (Impreza)is 106,000, still purring and rarely needed a mechanic. My common sense tells me stick with the Suburu company but I've been told that this Daimler warranty is really uncomparable.
mike - I probably would've eventually called you if I ran into problems. Thanks for the offer.

• Red-light cameras
As we all know, the reason behind red-light cameras (besides being a revenue machine for local governments and the camera manufacturers), is to prevent accidents at intersections. Well that may not be the case. It turns out, people are now stopping short at red lights, and are getting rear-ended by tailgaters!
• '03 Accord
The instruments have LED-type of illumination, like that found on more expensive brands. When the car is parked, the instrument cluster goes black. Open the door and insert the key into the ignition, and the instruments re-appear in three different stages. Gimmicky? Yeah, but still kinda neat.
• Mitsubishi Outlander
C&D tests the Forester's closest competitor, and come away with feeling that it's OK, but nothing special. It's underpowered (slow!), and they mention the multi-link rear suspension takes up a lot of space(!), in that it results in a higher load floor, with little under-floor storage space. It does have a much longer wheelbase (103.3"), so the passenger area is pretty good in terms of space. It also has a 4-speed sport-shift auto.
In the small bar charts, where they compare it to other competitors, the Forest betters the Outlander in all areas except the roadholding, where the Outlander just edges out the Forester.
• VW Phaeton and Touareg
Previews both cars, and gives them very good writeups.
Bob
So, if you post an I-Club link in the future, beware, the Edmunds Post Police will get you...
Bob
Stephen
I will start a movement here to get all the "regular" posters to leave and thus Edmunds will be left hi and dry of their knowledgebase of users. It would be a shame to loose such talent as Bob, Juice, Colin, and probably another dozen frequent posters.
Here is a link to the upcoming BBQ @ Giant's Stadium http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=223588

You agree to not promote other auto forums that provide message boards or chats.
Personally, as long as the link is providing information or in reference to the subject being discussed, I let it pass. If the post pops up out of nowhere with a link to bestcarclubever.com encouraging others to "visit and join", then that person will be hearing from me. :-)
If I could explain the all the nuances of the MA and why it is the way it is, I still wouldn't try. Not at all a legal-beagle here. All I can suggest is that you send your questions and concerns to Sylvia (sylvia@edmunds.com).

Frankly, I have no problem with your interpretation of this clause. Do disallow any other forum (message forum or otherwise) to be mentioned and/or linked—just because it could be construed as a "potential" competitor of Edmunds, is the tail waging the dog, IMO. Nobody benefits from this, and all it does is pi** off members who's intentions, in posting the links, were nothing but positive.
Bob
You agree to not promote other auto forums that provide message boards or chats.
I suggest Edmunds change it to the following:
You agree to not actively promote other auto forums that provide message boards or chats.
By inserting the word "actively," it becomes much clearer as to intent. That suggests that one is definitely "promoting," as opposed to just "listing." It's a big difference.
Bob
In the 90s de-contenting was a way of life. Everyone did it. They had to pay for all those rebates somehow. ;-)
At least Subaru is slowly adding things back. The 2003 Forester X has about 20 things mine didn't come with standard, and has only given up about 3. So the content is up, no doubt.
CR rates the PT highly, so that's a bit of a surprise. I think maybe because it's trendy, the factory workers take more pride in building them?
Right on Bob, you indeed predicted the Expedition EXT? XL? Plus? Grand? Whatever, it should be a lot more space efficient than GM's trucks.
Read about the Outlander, too. To me it seems like Mitsu didn't give it a full effort. No manual tranny at all? Plus a weak engine? That's the worst combination possible. Even mileage isn't very good, so why bother?
That comment about the rear suspensions got me, too. They go multilink and lose space? Look at the Outback vs. Forester, there is no question as to which one frees up more space with smaller shock tower intrusion.

I think we should have a name contest for the Edmunds hamster, er, server. My choice is "Feeble."

The bad news: Because I'm home with pneumonia!
Other than tired & having alternating tropical & arctic moments as the fever nadirs & zeniths, I'm feeling OK. But there's absolutely NOTHING good on daytime TV - but we already knew that
Cheers! (and Zithromax)

Like I said, other than the up & down fever, the fatigue, and a wee bit of a cough, I'm OK. Worst part of it all is sitting around doing nothing. Gadzooks, I must be sick - I haven't even done any laundry today!
I'm blessed by a caring family, good doctors, and a liberal sick leave policy.. I guess it's my job to take advantage of those things & get myself well.
Cheers!
Paul
Thanks!

Hope you get well soon!
Now when my son had a bout of that last winter, he could still manage to exercise his thumbs operating his Playstation. :-)

Funny how some say Subaru has thin paint - my cousin traded her Outback in for an Odyssey after she had her 3rd kid (and I'm finding 2 are hard!).
Any how, they came over to visit the newborn, and their brand new van looked like someone got a BB gun and did target practice on it. I mean a dozen or so dings, most of them with chipped paint.
They got the Gold one, and supposedly the silver is the one known for peeling. I can't even imagine what that would look like.
He sold his Outback nearly ding-free, and owned it as many years as he's owned his minivan months.

Cheers!

Paul- Zithromax, eh? Biaxin is a good one too...... :'))
Just keep hitting F5!
