A simple hands free headset w/wire is out of the question?
  • rollbarrollbar Member Posts: 297
I wonder about repositioning the microphone. Has anyone tried to pull it out? It appears the plastic panel might just pull out but I have not tested it.

I usually turn down the fan motor, which helps a little. Again, if I'm talking to someone on a landline they seem to hear me fine, it's when I'm talking to someone on a cell or headset that they complain about not hearing me. Odd.

Got a call from my lawyer yesterday and Nissan is giving me a rather nice settlement for my brake problems. He went back and forth with them until I got what I thought was enough after his 35% to keep my car in brake pads and rotors for awhile, or just get rid of it and get a BMW which pays for EVERYTHING until 50,000 miles.
Those of you who have a G35X with brake problems, find an attorney and sue Nissan! I am not a sue happy person, first time I have ever done this, but this premium car doesn't have premium brakes!
I am sure that I wouldn't have gotten a cash offer if it was the way I drive the car!
  • dem739dem739 Member Posts: 24
You must be right because I got an offer through my lawyer yesterday from Nissan. So i can't imagine they would be giving me money if there wasn't anything wrong with the brakes.
Don't want to say too much until I get the check and cash it but I will share all the details with the other 2005, G35X owners who have been jerked around by the service people!

It might be the X factor, because I was offered a substantial amount of money from Nissan through my attorney yesterday. Don't want to say much until i have the cash in my hand. But obviously there is something wrong with the brakes on my G35X.

I have not had much success getting it to work when calling a land or cell phone. I drive around a lot for work so I am fed up.

Even though I love the way the car I am thinking about trading it in for a Lexus IS350. I know the Bluetooth in that will work since it already works in my 4Runner.

Any advice? My left headlight turns on briefly and then turns off when I turn on the lights. The right one works fine.
  • dkmdkm Member Posts: 19
If possible, once you get the cash in hand (don't advise you say much before then), could you send me what you are allowed to send? My lawsuit is filed up here in Canada. The laws are different here but I am sure whatever I can get for my lawyer would help.

I have no idea but I can say that in the old days that was an indication of a bad ground wire or connection.

Consider this also. In the G35 manual, it strongly suggests using only premium fuel. You can use regular if you are stranded, etc. but immediately fill the remainder of the tank with 91 at your earliest convenience.
On the Maxima manual, it says regular can be used with some reduction in maximum power.
Well, the Maxima has less power (detuned) compared the the G car to start with.
I suspect the tune of the G35 is geared towards performance.
And while you can regular in an emergency, there is less tolerance for it. (The spark will not retarded as much as in the Maxima for regular use).
That's just my take on it. But I think it is safer to run Premium as recommended in the manual than make assumptions about unknown facts.

I'm considering getting a G35 (2007) and am wondering what people's overall impression is of Infiniti reliability. I recognize that the '07 will have all the usual 1st model year issues but generally I'm curious what folks who own '04-'06 models have experienced. My other options are an IS350, a BMW 3 series or Audi. Also, as a note I want to keep this car for 8+ years (I'm cheap, don't like replacing cars until they start causing problems that aren't worth fixing).

Anyway, really interested in folks experiences.

I have a 2005 G35 Coupe that is 14 months old. I have not had one single thing go wrong with the car. It has been to the dealer only for regular oil changes.

It is the best car I've ever owned, :) and I have owned 14 cars previous to this one. Consumer Reports rates Infiniti very high on reliability, but it may be model dependent. You should check this yourself. Read the owner reviews available here at Edmunds, and keep in mind that a Forum called "Problems and Solutions" will have more problems than a normal discussion Forum.

I think you get more for your dollar with the G than your other options, and a lot depends on styling taste. I would not touch an Audi with an eleven foot pole (after a really bad ownership experience several years ago).

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have a 2006 sedan (auto, non-sport), about 5,000 miles. No major problems so far, but a couple of minor issues. Lousy gas mileage when the A/C is on, even when I drive conservatively. The transmission does slow and jerky shifts. The A/C fan speed is always uncomfortably high, regardless of the themostat setting or the cabin temperature. I suspect the cabin temperature sensor is bad. Dealer service has been useless.

Overall it's a good car with solid performance for the money. But to me the acceleration doesn't really live up to the hp/torque rating of the engine. Interior materials and workmanship are quite a bit below those in a BMW. I used to own a 330Ci, and I have to say it is better than the G35 almost in every way. Of course, it also costs $10k more.

If you want more driving pleasure, get the BMW 3; you won't be disappointed. If you're worried about repair costs 8 yrs down the road, it's safer to stick with the Japanese cars.

Does anyone have the LG Chocolate phone by Verizon Wireless? Does it work well with the Bluetooth interface in your G35? Infiniti's web site does not have it in their recommended list, but this phone is a relatively new model. Many thanks in advance!

he he, I have a '98 5 series now, so I know about the 8 yr maintenance costs on the BMW. Thanks for the feedback on the Infiniti. Anyone have any experience with the new Lexus IS? Friends who have other Lexus models swear by the reliability. Of course there is the trade off in handling, fun to drive etc.

I am an owner of a 2005 G35X. At my last oil change, the dealer told me I had 40% wear left on my pads. 3,000 miles later, they informed me that I not only was below tolerance on my pads, but I also was below tolerance on my rotors as well. They stated that the rotors could not be turned and needed to be replaced. The Service manager told me that the even though it was an 05 model, the X model still have the older and smaller brakes. They also stated that it was not covered by warenty and would cost a little less than $600 for the front brakes only. the car is 13 months old and has less then 20,000 miles. Seems like it may be time for an additional class action lawsuit for the 2005 G35x for continuing to use the knowingly smaller faulty brakes on heavier model car with more horsepower than the previous model year.

I drove the LS400 cars for 6 years. I have no experience with the other models. I can say service was outstanding and the cars exceptional, however, they were also the most boring cars I have ever owned. Comfortable, quiet, smooth...yes; fun......no, that [fun] does not describe my Lexus experience.

Sorry I can't comment on the Chocolate phone. I can comment on the Verizon Razor which is also not on the Infinity list.

The phone works okay in most respects except for two significant problems. It seems folks talking to me from cell phones or headsets can't hear me. (Dealer says I am not the only one to complain about this.) Also, I can't set up the Infinity system to do a pause. That may sound like a minor problem but it's not for me. None of the numbers I call that have to dial an extension or a code to collect VM, will work.

Just paid $600 for new front brake pads and rotors on my G35x sedan with 26,000 miles of almost pure highway driving. Wrote to Infiniti Canada to express my dissatisfaction and they basically told me to pound salt. Previously owned an I30 and I35....not likely they will see another purchase from me.
  • dkmdkm Member Posts: 19
There are already lawsuits in Canada aginst them for the brake pad issue. Perhaps it is time to launch more of them.
  • dem739dem739 Member Posts: 24
Don't wait for a class action law suit. The settlement will be less. I have just settle for a very generous cash settlement from Infiniti. More generous than the 3 years 36,ooo miles they gave on the 03 & 04's. I just signed the papers last week and as soon as I get the check and it clears, I will post details.
  • brioninibrionini Member Posts: 5
Will appreciate that. My 03 coupe has 45,000. It seems like everytime I go to the dealer, I complain about squealing tires. The last time, they said the warranty has run out.

I just bought an 05 G35x with 30K miles on it. The body was in awful shape (tons of stone chips) from the dealer and they repainted the hood (2x), the front fenders and stripped and repainted the front and back bumpers. I keep noticing a whistling sound coming from under the hood, right in the center of the windshield.

I'm also noticing that the acceleration isn't what a normal V6 is like. The loaner they gave me was an 04 G35x and I could accelerate very quickly smoothly - you'd never know it was shifting, yet I can very distinctly tell when my car is changing gears and it takes alot longer to get to higher speeds. It seems like the rpms are way too high for lower gears. I'm also noticing screeching from the front tires when I brake. What kind of warranty is on the tires and what is the major issue everyone is having with them and should I be concerned. Any help would be great. Thanks!!!
  • rollbarrollbar Member Posts: 297
Fill the tank when it's empty with high octane gas. Your power problem might be caused by low octane gas, (knock sensor retards timing). Another thought.....the VDC system will suppress engine output and even apply brakes if it detects wheel spin. You might turn it off and see what happens when you accelerate hard.

    Expect paint problems.

Air pressure correct in tires? If so, you might check the brakes; sounds like maybe the front brakes are taking more than the intended load for bringing the car to a stop.

Others may have better suggestions for you.

    Thanks, Roll.

I do use Premium gas, but I've only filled it once. The dealership has had it more than I have so maybe there was some leftover in there. I'll run to empty and then fill. I'll also turn off the VDC and see if that helps.

My mechanic just looked at it and said it is going to need new front brakes in about 4 or 5 months. Is that really soon for this type of car? I've always had a Honda or Nissan previously. Do I just make sure the weight is evenly distributed when braking? This is my first time with AWD so I'm not exactly sure what things make a difference and not. I appreciate the help!

Also any recommendation for tires on the AWD G35? It's going to need new ones soon. I have the Turanzas on there now. Thanks!
  • rollbarrollbar Member Posts: 297
Do I just make sure the weight is evenly distributed when braking?

Moving things around in the car is not the solution. If I recall correctly, braking bias is in the range of 60% front and 40% rear. It's possible to have a hydraulic malfunction that causes less pressure in the rear causing the front brakes to take on more of the load. It's just one possibility for your symptom of squealing tires when you throw the binders on. Air pressure and tire condition are two more and there are others. See your master wrench with the problem if the tires are in good shape and the pressure is correct.

Same for the power problem; take it to your mechanic.

I have a Coupe but I drive the sedans every time I take mine in for service. They all seem to have plenty of spunk to me. I should add though, I usually get a 2 wheel driver. I don’t know if the slower response is typical of a 4 wheel driver.

I've commented on the great service I got when I had paint problems with my 2005 Coupe. I went into a 2006 Coupe and have been pretty happy with it.

Now the question. I have a questionnaire from Infiniti and I know a perfect score is important to the Dealership. My problem is that nearly everyone I dealt with at the Dealership left, all within about a 2 month period. It's just not the same place. I am tempted to say as much on the questionnaire but I might be better off to just toss it.

    Thoughts?

Thanks for your previous info. To your question on the survey:

From previous experience in the banking industry, they're usually sending the survey based on your last experience at the dealership. If you received the great service on that trip then go ahead and fill it out with the highest score. Anything less than that is failing for the dealership.

If you haven't received excellent service (but maybe not bad either) since the turnover, but don't necessarily want to give a bad score, then I'd probably go ahead and throw it away. If you want them to know what's going on though, go ahead a fill it out and tell them. They don't get penalized if you don't return the survey at all.

    Hope it helps.

I have a 2005 G35x with 22,000 miles and 20 months old. For the last couple of weeks, the brakes were squealing when I braked and then a couple of days ago the squealing got so bad that it was happening when the car was moving without braking. I brought the car to the dealer and paid $700 for new rotors in the front, new pads all around, and a rotor cut in the rear.
Considering what I am reading in this forum I see that I am not alone in my frustration, and I'd really like some advice on how to handle this. I thought it was normal to need a brake job at this mileage, but in speaking with friends I now know that's not true.

    All advice appreciated. Thanks.

I am considering a similar lawsuit against Infiniti. If anyone could provide me with the name of a lawyer who is familiar with this litigation I'd appreciate it. I understand that that whoever you name may not be able to practice in NY, but it's a start. Thanks.

I'm picking up a new o6 G35X, auto trans. What grade of gas is required with this car, just curious from other owners. Thanks.

My auto window 'up' was knocking back down as if something was in the way. Apparently the device/sensor can get dirty and malfunction causing this to happen. It was cleaned and is okay now.

In Dash 6-disc CD player. I'm was on my 2nd and now that funked out. The first died and I couldn't access any CD's nor eject them. It was sent back to the maker and I was mailed my CD's a few months later. This 2nd player malfunctioned and is being replaced free of charge and/or under warranty. Supposedly one company makes the 6-disc player that is in Infiniti, Nissan, Toyota, etc. If you use it alot its only a matter of time.

My seatbelt stopped rolling in as well -- also replaced -- well the part is on order.

Just an FWI for all of you.
    Have a good weekend.

hi. I purchased a 2006 g35 coupe 6mt and had a rattling noise coming from the engine. i made an appointment with the dealership and they replaced the transmition. now, two months later, the noise came again and i took it back to the dealership. they are going to replace the engine. have you had any rattling noise in your g35?
  • wildcat2320wildcat2320 Member Posts: 15
Ih aven't really heard the rattling noise, but my engine is really loud, even when idling in addition to very unsmooth shifting and lack of power. Did they say why they replaced the trans when the noise was coming from the engine? Or why they're replacing the engine now? I'm curious, I'm making an appt tomorrow to take mine in and have the engine and trans looked over.

I also have a 2006 G35 Coupe 6MT. I came on here looking to see if anyone else is having the transmission problem and have found my answer. Mine started making the noise 2 days after I left the dealership. I drove it for a few hundred miles and returned to the dealership thinking it wasn't normal. They told me it was fine and was typical of the 6MT. It started to get worse and louder especially after the car was warmed up. The noise would go away when the clutch was pressed, but it really was becoming embarrasing because other people had actually commented on it. I took it to another dealership and just upon pulling in the service manager heard it and said it was definetly not normal. They suspected the bearings were hitting too hard and kept the car and said they would get it taken care of. They called the next day to say they had to replace the transmission, clutch, bearings, and that the transmission was completely shot. Mind you I only have 4k miles on the car. They also told me that another 06 had came in that same day with the exact same problem and they suspect a run of faulty transmissions but haven't had any problems with the automatics. So they replace everything, all has been going well for 2 weeks and now 400 miles later and the noise is back again. I called the dealership today and spoke to the manager who said bring it back that the bearings need adjustment. So I head back tomorrow to drop the car, but am now very weary after reading about your engine. Please keep us updated as will I.
  • kcd061kcd061 Member Posts: 9
Oh one thing I forgot. After replaceing the transmission I did go back to the dealership once because the shifting used to be very smooth and now it isn't, it is much more rough. They said that it is supposed to feel that way, that you are supposed to feel all the gears and that my original one was smooth because it was bad. No problems in terms of power.
  • wildcat2320wildcat2320 Member Posts: 15
Isn't that interesting that a bad transmission would accelerate smoothly and good one not. I just got my car back today in having them look at the transmission and they said that it's supposed to sound that way. Unofrtunately the same person owns the Infiniti and Nissan dealerships in the area so it makes it difficult to get someone to look at it. I'm heading back home to the Pittsburgh area and have a friend who works for a Nissan dealership there and I'm going to have him take a look at it figuring they can authorize any repairs that would need to be done just as easily as Infiniti or am I wrong there? The lack of power is just that I have to gas it harder to get through the gears and get to cruising speed a little faster.

I am due to get my 60K service and the dealer quoted me $925/- is this reasonable. Its getting expensive to get this Car serviced. I am just trying to see if the dealer is trying to rip me off.
  • akubikakubik Member Posts: 20
As a general rule, I avoid the dealer unless only the dealer can work on the problem, like the airbag light. Find a local shop that specializes in foreign cars, or Japanses cars specifically, you can save a lot of money. I use Pacific Rim Auto near Miramar in San Diego. They are honest and considerably less expenisve. My old Maxima needed some work on a cylinder, dealer wanted $1000, PacRim did it for a little over $300.

A 60K mile check is not something that requires you to pay premium at the dealer. It really boils down to labor costs. The dealer charges $100+/hr. and the independent guy will only charge $30-$50. The parts are all Nissan parts.
  • jbadamsjbadams Member Posts: 63
I have had mine for about 6 weeks now. Love it!
The owner's manual states that Premium is recommended but 87 octane is okay. So, I have tested several tanks with 87 and 91, and have kept track of the mileage. I find no difference in gas mileage or performance. I am going to just use 87 from now on.

My 04 Maxima on the other hand runs fine on both, but it does get better gas mileage using 91 octane. But it is a wash considering the extra cost for premium.

I have been wondering whether others have had transmission issues. I bought my 2006 G335 Coupe 6MT in February, and have complained about the transmission from the start. I was coming out of a 2003 BMW 325XI with a 5 speed manual, and have driven manual transmissions for the past 25 years. This is the least smooth of any that I have driven. When engaging or disengaging the clutch, just at the top of clutch pedal travel (just pressing down or just about to lift my foot off the clutch), I can feel grinding or vibration. This happens in every gear, and is especially noticable when trying to make a smooth, slow start. I brought it to the dealer, who of course could find nothing wrong. When I brought it in a second time, I asked to drive another 6MT (new) that was on the lot. They let me do that, and surprisingly it felt the same. So the dealer (and me, I guess) concluded that this was normal. I have to say that this is the only vehicle in 25 years that has done this. Even my 2003 Frontier is smoother, and the BMW was of course buttery smooth. Could this have anything to do with the "dual mass" flywheel, or somehow being chalked up to a high-performance transmission (the G35 is the sportiest and most powerful car that I've owned)? Also, when easing out the clutch in first gear, the tranmission shudders and vibrates (not lugging; I know the difference). Again, it feels as though the flywheel and clutch plate are not rotating smoothly against each other. Anyone else ever have these issues? Is this normal, or do I need a second opinion from another dealer?
  • kcd061kcd061 Member Posts: 9
    A couple of things..
You have summed up exactly what I was feeling with this car. Having come from BMW previously and driven every 6 speed under the sun, and traded a 2005 Honda S2000 (if you have driven one it is known they have one of the best gearbox in the world) for the G35, you just get the feeling something isn't quite right. I have taken it 4 times now because of a rattling noise that is heard when the car is idling and after it gets warm. The first said this was normal and I didn't believe them so I went to another dealer. Luckily I got a very good service manager the second trip and he was apparently hearing something I wasn't but I told him it didn't want to go in second gear sometimes and also did the "shudder" that you mentioned at take off and if pulling slowly up a hill into my driveway, hence the new transmission. After getting it back I had the grinding and vibration through all the gears so I turned around and drove back. They chuckled at me and said now I was experiencing the G35 and that is the way it is supposed to feel and that is what they consider normal and that it was in fact a high performance transmission. I accepted and continued driving but the noise still bugged me. I have searched on here and found even the first models of the car people have the same noise at idle. Nervous though I went back yesterday and initially they thought it was the clutch I was talking about (found out the did not replace it previously because it was ok they found out) and they kept the car and drove it for a long distance, let it go cold and did it again, the clutch is fine and the rattle is still nothing that they deem abnormal. Feeling a little nutty or thinking maybe I am just a sensitive driver I actually showed where other people had complained of the same thing. They said it is common but the rattling is just the way the 6M transmission is made, but highly stressed if it got louder or if anything else seemed abnormal to just come back right away and they would tell me on the spot if anything was going on. Given this guy is a true car enthusiast and racer I tend to want to believe him since he also immediately made the transmission right without me knowing. As I was leaving another guy was picking up his after an oil change, a few years older it was, and sure enough I could hear his making the same noise...So I guess I will just accept for what it is...if that is all I have to worry about after reading some of the other problems I will just keep my fingers crossed.

Good luck, will stay posted if I have to go back...

Did the dealer check the motor and transmission mounts?
  • newfrontiernewfrontier Member Posts: 36
I had essentially the same experience. The service manager said that if anything changed to bring it right back. He also said that I had succeeded in "making a record" in case there is an issue in the future. That was my intention (to go on record), so I guess it was mission accomplished. I'm still not happy with it, and expect a smoother drive train in a near luxury car. In my mind, if issues like this continue, Infiniti still has a long way to go to match BMW quality and feel and to be able to truly compete for the same customer base. Speaking of that, I'm about to take the car back for an oil change, and will get the dealer to try to fix the numerous dash board rattles, the auto headlamps that are unbelievably sensitive (driving at 4:30 PM under trees, even in bright sunshine, causes the lights to go on and off, so much so that the other cars on the road must think that I'm flashing my lights), vibration through the brake pedal under hard breaking, and will once again ask them to take a look at the tranny. In view of all of this, my perception is that Infiniti is just not up to BMW quality. Too bad.

have been very helpful in my continuing effort to choose my next car. I buy cars & keep them for 5-10 years, so this is interesting stuff. I only consider rear-wheel-drive cars with a manual. There aren't many.

I neither need nor want 400 horsepower, but I do want smoothly-operating controls, from the shift lever to the turn signal, and everything in between.

The BMW continues to move up in my ratings.

Thanks for your comments, and do continue to keep us informed.

The auto on/off headlights have a sensitivity adjustment. You might want to try it before raising the issue with the service manager, (Sales person should be able to help with this if you can't find the adjustment).

I have one more time to "make my record" as the first dealership didn't have it on file. It is still making the noise and the shuddering in first gear came back. I do not know if they checked the mounts, considering the put in a new transmission one would tend to think so. Such a shame because I really like the car. I did go this weekend however and tried the new BMW 335 coupe and was very impressed. It doesn't have the lag that the 330 did, but that is another story. I like the look and drivve of the G35 but am highly contemplating getting rid of of it just because of the quality. The only problem is everyone is telling me the G35 is not holding its resale value which can add quite a bit of negative equity. For the time I am going to hold onto it because I just can't let it go.

I have only had my sedan for 2 weeks and last week I began hearing a short grinding noise that occurs ony in the morning right after I put it in drive and roll less than 10 feet. It seems to only happen when the engine is cold. I live in San Diego, so it's never too cold. Today I heard it once while leaving my aprtment, and then again 5 minutes later after picking up my coffee.

Does anyone hear a similar sound or an idea what might be causing it? I only have about 350 miles on it, so it seems unusua that it would be making noises already.
