Toyota borrows some good ideas
Both from the Plain Dealer.

jchan2: Sorry, no 8-seat AWD. Current speculation is that the AWD drivetrain leaves no room for the 8th seat mounting points.
Thanks in advance
Henry
For the extra 3000+ back then, I got leather seats - do not care for, but this is personal.
Wanted Sunroof - okay, I did that.
Alum wheels - Nice, but big deal.
Misc stuff - Not important to remember.
Me - I would opt for the LE and pocket the change.
Price diff was greater because they had a discounted package for the LE that did not carry over to the XLE. 1999 was 2nd model yr.
General rule of thumb - wait for year 2.
Good Luck.

Re-inforces my point- look to Car and Driver and Consumer Reports for usable vehicle ratings and comparisons. Look to edmunds for its awesome pricing and discussion halls.

-3 (each front seat and rear) zone HVAC
-power right, left and hatch doors
-JBL stereo with 10 speakers
-rear seat audio with wireless headphone capability
-XLE fabric
-8 way power driver's seat
-16 inch alloy wheel
-anti-theft alarm
-color-keyed, heated power mirrors
-auto on/off headlights
-fog lamps
-wood-grain trim
-chrome door handles
-overhead console with trip computer, temp and homelink
-removable center console
-leather-wrap steering wheel with audio controls
Of course, lots of those things can be added to the LE. It really depends cuz if you MUST have fog lamps, you may have to go with XLE, cuz my info is that they aren't available in the LE (at least not in our region). And of course, things can be added to the XLE, too.

TOYOTA MAKING SPECIAL SIENNA FOR DISABLED
The Japanese automaker will launch a handicap-capable version of its all-new, ?04 minivan, dubbing it the Sienna Rampvan. The name refers to the fact that the special edition will feature a lowered floor with a fold-out ramp designed to improve access for those using wheelchairs or mobility scooters, said the Toyota brand?s general manager, Don Esmond. Additional features, such as a kneel system and electric vehicle entry assist, will also be available. Like a conventionally equipped Sienna, the special minivans will begin life on the Toyota assembly line in Princeton, Indiana. They will then be modified by Independent Mobility Systems, based in Farmington, New Mexico. The Sienna Rampvan will go on sale in June, about three months after launch of the standard Sienna. ?Paul A. Eisenstein
Regarding price between LE and LE AWD (close to 4 grand), it seems steep. What do we get for that? The Explorer and Expl 4WD are less than 3 grand apart, Montero and Montero 4WD close to 3 grand different.
Going to the Milw. auto show tonight. Hope to see a new Sienna there. Will shoot pix like a fiend. Any measurements requested? Specifics to look at? Leaving work at 4:30, post before then.

Unless they have different system in the US.

Are some automakers just more greedy than others?

If anyone else have any information on whether AWD will be offered, please share your info with us.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
17" run flat tires (expensive)
17" alloy wheels
traction control and anti-skid
rear disk brakes
There may be more but this is what I can remember off the top of my head.

A dealer called me this morning asking if I wanted to order my LE AWD, gave me the price, etc (which was OVER MSRP..)., so it DOES exist! Thank heavens.. (though, BTW, I declined to pay through the nose at this early point. Sounded too much like Hondarrogance..) (Hmmm, maybe I should keep my mouth shut, huh...Lament the nonexistence of the LE AWD...and no one would order any and I could get a good deal...Nah, I'm just not that evil. Not yet!)
Look for the 2004 Sienna yellow flash page.
Skip intro.
Clack on "Prices"
Model Starting At*
Sienna CE 7-passenger $23,465
Sienna CE 8-passenger $24,085
Sienna LE 7-passenger $24,770
Sienna LE 8-passenger $24,920
Sienna XLE 7-passenger $28,770
Sienna Limited 7-passenger $34,990
Sienna AWD CE 7-passenger $28,385
Sienna AWD LE 7-passenger $31,975
Sienna AWD XLE 7-passenger $37,440
Wait for year 2, bugs out, pay less.
Although there will be feature creep and price increase....
A little tough chart for a comparo, but at least a list of what's what.
Does anyone have the short listing of all Toyota vehicles that had bugs the first year or two? Or, was there ever a Toyota that had bugs the first year or two?
hansienna, you can go on thinking that Toyota is immune, but its not.
Dont get me wrong, there is no doubt in my mind that even first year redesigned Toyotas will be incredibly long lasting and reasonable (cost-wise) to maintain, but there are niggling issues that will almost always be solved by year 2.

If anyone wants it, let me know I can send it over. Excel spreadsheet.
Does anyone know if XLE LIMITED will come with AWD at all? I couldn't find the its MSRP anywhere.
Thanks,
Wesley

I spoke to one local dealer and there will be few Siennas in stock in mid-March. When looked the Toyota website, the price for CE is $23,465 (not bad as a Odyssey fighter). It will cost $37,440 for the top-of-the-line AWD XLE. Isn't it about the cost for 2004 Lexus RX330?
Certainly, this is a very impressive minivan. Look out Honda!
Thanks for all of your information over the past few months, I have been listening and most recently planning our ideal 04 Sienna. We are on the fence about purchasing it or leasing it. I have contacted 2 local dealers in Ft. Wayne, IN and neither seem to be overly informed about this van. I inquired about residual values and neither knew anything yet. Does anyone know what they may be? I looked at the residuals for the 03 Sienna on toyota.com and they are not too promising probably because of the new model being released. The Odyssey residuals are very good and I am hoping the same for the 04 Sienna.

Please send me a copy of your Excel SS on the comparisons....thanks in advance!

On what basis do come to that conclusion?
No car I have owned has ever had leather so I don't have any direct experience, but my assumption has always been that cloth is better when you have small kids. First of all, my kids always sit on car seats so they barely touch the upholstery. When they make a mess it's usually the car seat that gets dirty not the upholstery. Secondly, the kid's car seats seem to fit better on coth seats and don't slide around as much as they do when mounted on leather upholstery. Finally, I have never had any problem using my Bissel steam carpet cleaner to clean my cloth car seats.
Can anyone explain why I should be thinking about paying a lot more for leather upholstery in the Sienna when the kids will be sitting on car seats and booster seats anyway?
My first year Sienna had "jingle" doors that could not be fixed. My friends had the same problem.
My first year Sienna when the tempeture was below 37, the tubes feeding the center hvac vent vibrated over rough pavement. Dealer attempts to fix did not work.
I did not need to participate in the oil sludge class action lawsuit, but others did.
All cars have small problems. The honda problems mentioned above are minor. I think people are spoiled by some models and think they all should be as good.
All the hondas (3)I owned were perfect. The toyota was not. I would still get a first year Sienna and very well might. Just because it happend once does not mean it will again. I think the oddysey would be less trouble becsuse it is established. If I was having problems with the first Oddysey, chances are a new one would be better.
Hondas are great, but this new van is more evolved and represents the latest. IM sure Honda will top it in two years. But until then, the toyota is a great new entry.
Residual: The sienna I checked had a 49% residual, as do most toyotas. That is very good. The Town and Country has 39% (at 36 month)
Volvos are at 55%. I don't think the new one is be established, but it should follow historic presidence.
Next, in looking at the little specs. that Toyota gives us, I actually think the Sienna XLE FWD comes closest to the EX model of the Ody as far as trying to compare apples to apples. What do you think?
I'm going with cloth...
The leather vs. cloth seats- which do you prefer and why? discussion may offer some further insights.
