World's worst two-tone--'76 Monte Carlo "Fashion Tone". Only the front-fender blister and surrounding area were the contrasting color on the lower body. Just a big blob of different color. Truly yuck.

    You mean, like this?
Yeah, it's a bit of a mess, in my opinion. With a car like this, I think about the best you can do with two-toning is just a landau roof contrast, and then leave well enough alone.

Although, perhaps if they did it like how my Mom's '86 was, it wouldn't look too bad. Her car had the hood, roof, and pillars in gray, and the rest in silver. The Colonade might have been a bit too curvy to carry that off as well, though.

The green/green LTD has beautiful colors, but I don't like the car
It looks too much like the '73 Torino I had with the Windsor 351
    engine. Hated it.

That LTD II must be some kind of sport trim package - the paint works wonders, along with the Magnum 500 style wheels. I too am not a big fan of the stacked lights, they are kind of busy, but so was design then I guess. For that car, the pic andre posts might be the best spec and among the best possible colors.

On that note, the other day I was looking for a properly equipped example of a bustleback Seville to post on another forum, and I found this. It was on a photo repository site that seems to glean images from old ads, so it had little data other than this is an 80 Elegante with a 368. This is how I would want a bustleback - high spec model but without much bling, good colors (although I would rather have two tone blue with blue leather, but this is maybe the runner up), and importantly, these wheels, which I believe are an aluminum wheel with a large center cap. The car also appears to have a sunroof. At least someone ordering the car then during the era of wire caps, cabrio roofs, and faux Rolls-Royce grilles knew how to do it right:

That bustleback Seville--the '80 would be the one to get.

I like those wheels too, but the blackwalls, yeesh!

Nice interior. Eldorado instrument panel, American-style lux inside.

I still can't accept the rear end, but I guess it does kinda remind me of the car "Arthur" rode around in in the movie of the same name.

I gotta admit, as a kid, I wanted a '73-76 Monte Carlo (no '75 or '77). My Dad's head touched the ceiling which was a deal-breaker. Ironically, he fit vertically in an '80 and bought one of those.

I like them in dark colors and with a full vinyl top. To get the Landau meant you got the Turbine wheels, which to me didn't look as nice as the five-slot Rally Wheels.

Body side moldings, especially when they started making them wide, just really clashed with the styling IMHO.

While the Fashion Tone was garish, so was this, although for some weird reason I kind-of like it. 1976 Monte Carlo Custom interior in vinyl. Kind of neat the the Custom cloth interior (same pattern as this) was available in two cloths--a corduroy insert, or a plaid velour insert. Ah, the days of choice.

Chevy's shtick on split front seats at the time was 50/50. They didn't do center armrests through '76 but the passenger seat was reclining. I'm pretty sure (though not totally) that the 'prestige' divisions didn't do the reclining passenger seat until later.

In hindsight, it's funny that only Chevy and Pontiac stretched the coupe wheelbase four inches for the 'specialty' coupe. All wasted space and all up-front.

I do remember a lime green with white top and interior '76 Monte in my hometown. The green, and the green trim inside, is retina-searing.

We’ve talked about it before but that Seville is the right combo. Same could be said for the Eldorado of the same era. Didn’t they make a “Touring” version of the Eldo that pretty much styled it that way?

That 1976 Limefire metallic is a bit on the loud side, and not in the range of greens that I'm normally attracted to...yet I find it somehow alluring, on the right car. Normally those types of greens tend to work better on smaller cars and sportier cars, and as you move up to bigger and more luxurious cars, it seems to lose something. But, even on something like an Electra, I have to admit I don't hate it.

Is this one of those colors that started off as Cadillac-only, and then worked its way down? I tried searching for "1976 Cadillac Lime" and got a bunch of pics of '74 models, in something called "Persian Lime". But, that may have been a different color. Seems like this '76 color was everywhere that one year, and then gone.

I've shown these pics before as they remind me of dad's 79 Eldorado diesel. His was the same two tone color combination with the same good looking and comfortable saddle brown leather interior. His had wire wheel covers which were extremely heavy. They looked nice though with the Michelin XH whitewall tires. Even though the car was period brown, I thought it looked sharp combined with the copper color sides. The emblem on the pictured car is not in the correct spot, something that irks me too! You can just see dad's Eldo behind my Sunbird as I was preparing it for paint. Sheeba the black lab was a fine girl and is missed.

That Eldorado interior is beautiful to my eyes.

Not being a wise guy, but how did that emblem get located where it was? Body/paint work I'll assume.

I looked at the 1980 brochure for evidence of an Eldorado Touring Coupe. I didn't see anything then. I do remember them a couple or more years later on that same body. Much of the trim was blacked out, and the car had blackwall tires, which to my eyes clashed with the formal look of the car.

RE.: Volare convertible....come on, andre, that's a "Monteverdi".

Your online old-car searches sure take you farther places than do mine, LOL!

I do recall the 1974 Cadillac "Persian Lime FIremist". It sure looked the same shade to me as what was used on the lesser '76 lines. Chevy just called it "Lime Green Metallic" that year.

The "Monteverdi" reminds me of a story a friend told me when he worked at Avanti in Youngstown. By then, middle-to-late '80's, they were using Monte Carlo chassis. The wags at the shop called the completed cars "Avanti Carlos" or "MontAvantis".

I am amused by the white letter tires on that Eldo touring, such a different identity, and very much a style of the time. That Seville I posted could use whitewalls, but with blackwalls doesn't offend me - whoever optioned that car was trying for maybe less of a traditional look.

There was a "touring" type trim for the downsized 85+ DeVille too, I recall in the early 90s a teacher I had in high school bought one, a blue Sedan DeVille, maybe an 87 or so, it had wheels similar to that Eldo. I recall this clearly as he also had a 77-79 Caprice wagon, which by then even here was looking a little tired, but he had a sentimental thing for it, and continued to drive it a bit even after buying the Caddy (fun to think the Caddy wasn't too old then).

re: Monteverdi, they also did a sedan conversion (Monteverdi used Mopar bits on many cars), and it looked the part of a muscle sedan:

The "Arthur" car, a mid 50s Silver Wraith, exists today virtually identical to how it appeared in the movie, here's the bustle:

@uplanderguy, yes I assume paint work. The engine badge would be below the Eldorado script. Dad's said 'diesel' in red lettering. His wire wheel covers were like these. Beautiful car. I loved driving it and I was only 21 when he bought it.

Good looking example and very well equipped. I’m dubious of the mileage. The driver’s floor area and mat look pretty worn.

Heading to the comments now to see if anyone else thinks the same.

Hard for me to believe that those cars are over 30 years old already. My former '63 Lark Daytona Skytop was only 25 years old when I bought it. The years fly by and there's not a thing any of us can do about it! LOL

Yeah, tell me about it. Sometimes I think of something like an old Dart as being "around" 20 years old. I bought my first Dart, a '69 GT, in the fall of 1989. The '90 model year had already begun, so I guess you could say it was 21 years old. I bought my second one, a '68 270 hardtop, on April 3, 1992 (I remember the date because it was the day after my birthday). It was 24, but still, in my mind I guess, "around" 20 years old. And, I guess my mind sort of freeze-frames around that point.

But, suddenly it's 2022, and the realization hits me that as of this June, according to the sticker in the door jamb, suddenly my '03 Regal is about to be 20 years and those Darts would be in their 50s.

And hell, my DeSoto is now 65 model years old...it qualifies for Medicare! :s

My first new car out of college was a 1985 (dodge colt). Still seems like a “modern” car to me. But now 37 YO, so practically an antique!

Heck, at the time a bought it, going backwards would have been a 1948! So unusable as a daily car even then, but I could still daily that Colt today if I felt like it.

I loved my Arrow GT 2.6; with a 10 second 0-60 it was one of the faster cars available. Considering that it came standard with a five speed manual and four wheel disc brakes it was ahead of its time in the sport compact market.

Spotted this backed into a parking space at the local PNC bank, prior to opening.

I normally like dark colors, but I love pearlescent white.

I wish I could've found something like this, with 6K miles, a 2020, six weeks ago when I was offered $15.7K for my five-year-old Cruze, more than I paid for it new and with original tires and brakes still. I've read that used-car prices have now peaked and are on their way down slightly. I've had a nationwide search for 2020 Impalas and in my email everyday are ones showing up with mileage in the 50's to 60's....way too much.

This pic almost looks like the car was photoshopped there; clean when everything else is dirty.

The Premier, so it has the chrome spear low on the side; this has the wheels I like and not the bigger ones on rubber-band tires. Chromed mirror housings too, which I like.

Just as much drooling as I can bring myself to do on anything other than a basic C8 these days.

Not an obscure or classic car. No comment necessary really. Sigh.

Sharp car. Just keep looking and something you want will pop up. Used market is hot, but I assume that is still not the most popular thing out there, being a large sedan.

50-60K miles, sounds like retirement age of rentals, if one wants to beware of that kind of thing.

I like those wheels, too, like on the loaded early run rental I had in late 2013.

Honestly, I can't tell if that's a 2014 or a 2020 or something in-between, LOL. Earlier on that model was called an LTZ instead of 'Premier', but I didn't walk around back to look at the nameplate. Colors were phased-in and retired, but who can keep track of that, LOL.

The 2020 I would've bought, but someone else bought it before the dealer even got a pic on their site, was built in Detroit. Somehow that seemed totally appropriate for that car. I printed out a Monroney label for it based on the VIN that was on the dealer's site....very briefly.

Unrelated, but an old friend of mine, retired university prof, has a C8 on order and it was built this past Friday. He had a VIN no. assigned already and the Corvette Forum online shows the production schedule at Bowling Green, which is pretty cool--so he could see the Friday production date from the range of VIN's shown there.

A longtime friend of mine had both '15 and '18 Impalas. The '15 was an LTZ and it had a different grille insert than the one pictured above. I'm not sure what that's about, but I remember seeing others with the same insert (which I didn't like as well as the one pictured). His had the 'rubber band' tires and big wheels which looked nice, but I wouldn't want to live with tires like that. I rode in it once. They were proud of the blue lighting that shot across the instrument panel and door panels either when the car was started, or when the lights were turned on, I can't remember. Stuff like that really doesn't impress me but it was pleasing to the eye. Their '18 was an LT and not as nice. Both were black.

I like bright trim and chrome accents on the instrument panel, as opposed to matte. A Toyota friend of mine comments positively on the chrome trim on the dash of my Cruze as well as the cloth trim where other cars usually had just vinyl on the dash.

The worst panels had nothing in front of the driver and everything in the center. Sheesh I hate that. Saturn Ion, older Civics, and of course old Jeeps had that. I think Teslas are like that but I’m pretty sure Hondas aren’t like that anymore thankfully.

Maybe it’s the photo but the footwell looks pretty narrow. It could be the light-colored interior too. I felt similarly about the last Taurus.

I liked those Impalas fine, even though I preferred their platform-mates the Lacrosse and XTS. You could get a nice one for fairly short money after the end of their run because it seemed nobody wanted them. I did a search locally for one a year or so back and was surprised by how many were for sale with very few miles, say, under 20K. Lots of Premier trims too. The white diamond paint was their best color but they needed the brown or cashmere interior. Of course locally most were dealer-ordered with black inside.

The steering wheel design was its worst feature.

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but sometimes I kick myself for not jumping on an Impala I saw a couple years ago. It was a 2018 Impala I saw back in late 2019. I had gone with my friend to the Nissan dealer; I forget why now. Either to drop off or pick up his 2017 Murano from servicing. They had this Impala on their lot. It was a more basic model, like a 1LS or something? I remember it had the V6 at least, cloth seats, and was sort of a sandstone/driftwood color not so different from my 2000 Park Avenue. They wanted $16,000 for it, and it had 35,000 miles on it. At that time, it would have been two model years old. It was nothing fancy, but I kinda liked it.

Anyway, fast forward to now, and when I search Impalas, the only thing coming up in the $16,000 range is the old W-body style. There's a 2013 LTZ with 77,000 miles on it for $15,590, and a 2011 LT with only 31,000 miles on it, for the same price. Actually, a newer style did come up, a 2015 2LT, with 110,000 miles on it, for $14,531.

I wonder...are used car prices going to come back down at some point, or are they going to just level off at their high point, and stay there until inflation catches up?

    I wonder that too.

I've never seen the new or used car markets like they've been recently.

Chevy Equinoxes being sold at sticker---unheard-of in the 41 years I've been buying Chevys (excluding Corvettes of course).

My in-laws bought a RAV4 locally here maybe four years ago. A Toyota showroom felt strange to a guy like me. I remember the sticker was the price. I was totally unaccustomed to that, LOL!

I think prices will stay high for a long time. No end in sight for the chip shortage, despite what some makers say. That'll keep the pressure on used car prices.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
Yep, supply issues and general inflation are going to prevent a return to the old days, and likely prevent a return to it being a buyer's market for most cars, too.

This got posted on FB today on the "Certified Car Geek" page. I haven't seen one of these in ages. Forgot how pretty they could be optioned up. Love the white interior on this '78 Pontiac Phoenix LJ coupe. Obviously must be garaged every winter considering it's in Maine.

That is a nice example, although I wish someone could've resisted the urge to slap the aftermarket body side molding on, pretty typical of that era.

Other than I know the factory side moldings of this model were full-length, one can always tell an aftermarket molding by the fact that the vinyl insert doesn't extend into the leading tip of the molding.

That is a really sharp looking Phoenix. I can still remember, years ago, seeing a '75 or so Ventura in the junkyard. It was one of those upper trim levels like an SJ or LJ, and in a really bold, eye-catching blue. I don't remember much about the interior, although I'm getting the image of black cloth. I do remember it seeming to be really nice, almost too upscale for the car!

Seeing the center vents between the door and quarter window reminds me that only the Ventura/Phoenix, I think, had them horizontal like this. I plainly remember a new yellow '75 Nova SS at my hometown dealer that had the Ventura vents like this, instead of the Nova's vertical vents here. Assembly line goof, no doubt. I'm sure one came down the line at Ypsilanti right after the other, all divisions.

I haven't seen one in person, but I have to admit being smitten with the 'Caffeine' color on the new C8.

I'll be the first to say that I usually am not into a car as phallic symbol, and there's some of that here no doubt, but less than say, having a Ferrari or Lotus or the like I think.

My friend's yellow C8 was built this past Friday and he is picking it up at the Museum in Bowling Green on March 3 at 7:45 CST. He tells me it's on a webcam so I'll be sure to tune in. He ordered it over a year ago.

Here's the color I'd order. Subdued color on a non-subdued car.

Yes, I like that it's an American institution; the car is the same place in the lineup as it has been since 1953, and the name hasn't been moved around or watered down. And this car seems to be a nice bit of engineering at a good price, all things considered. Nothing else domestic like it.
