Hi Atalay - so that was your delivery yesterday? I'm waiting for the truck to return so they can ship mine out on Thurs. Best experience with a dealer bar none - Waikem Honda, Marc Douglas. Straightforward, no gimmicks, great service. Thanks in bucketfulls go to Brian125 for posting this information! Any questions, feel free to contact me.
atalalay, you'be been very informative. can you send Marc Doug's phone number to my private email address? I would like to explore the possibility of wokring with him. thnaks. rob.
i have been telling people for the past 2 months on this forum. you have to be a fool not to buy out of state. YOU GO WHERE THE DEAL IS. one of the best keep secrets. fast, easy, no stress or bull and like most of you posted great buying experience. i pick up my pilot exl res on friday comming from hidy honda in ohio del to a dealer in new york. happy piloting i hope all the new people who are reading the posts in this forum will follow suit. JUST READ THE POSTS AND SAVE. the honda dealers who want msrp or 500 under msrp can go to hell with there greed.
Robmath: What is your email address? Edmunds is not disclosing it? If you want we can take the discussion off the board or continue it here... or you contact any dealer mentioned here: you simply try "dealername".com (ex Waikem.com) to look up a number and then ask for either the Internet manager or a particular name (such as Marc Douglas). The rules of this board forbid more detailed information... and for good reason...
Ccgr: yes, I am the one taking up their time! Are you the one in CT?
Yes Atalay, that's me in CT. What a great deal - they do a fantastic job and Marc is nothing but helpful. Satisfied with the Pilot? Anyone who's listening - you're crazy to overpay.
My hat's off to Brian, Atalay and other gurus, who have been making this board very helpful. I have a concern over the Out-of-State deal. What options do you have if you find some minor damages, for example, some dents or scratches, on the shipped vehicle, or you find some ordered add-ons are not installed at all? This could be a no-brainer, but I still need you guys to appease my mind.
Unfortunately, the possibility of dishonest behaviour always exists.
However, it can be mitigated by a number of simple moves: put down a REFUNDABLE deposit (typically $500) on a credit card and pay the rest upon delivery (I chose this route). You can still walk away when it is delivered in "unsatisfactory condition".
You will get a written invoice for everything before you sign and reneging on that CONTRACT will have legal consequences. Or see if you can convince an O-o-S dealer to drop-ship to a dealer near(er to) you; many are not willing to do that (Brian125 chose this option).
Clearly, there must be an exit strategy and recourse for you as the buyer because that will always keep the seller (more) honest. Try to keep most of your negotiation information to e-mails in lieu of telephone conversation...
Atalalay, your self-defence surely helps. Did you claim to the OoS dealer upfront that the $500 deposit is refundable and you would take it back if the delivery were not done to your satisfaction? anyway to legalize this?
I just went through a brutal refinancing battle, which largely diminished my trust with business people. thanks. rob.
i would say 99.9 percent of the time any dealer that ships a vehicle to you from out of state the car/ truck is throughy checked for any problems first hand. robmath's point on damage goods was one of my main concerns, being my pilot is being del to a dealer near me instead of flatbedding it. I am not concerned about a damaged pilot. BUT I SAY TO YOU ROB MAKE THE DEALER PUT IN WRITING IF PILOT IS DAMAGED OR SCRATCHED HE WILL HAVE A LOCAL DEALER TAKE CARE OF IT. THATS WHAT HIDY HONDA SAID HE WOULD ORIGINALLY DO for me if they flatbedded my pilot to new york. THE other p[oint by Atalaly was right on. You do not take del if car ACCESSORIES WAS NOT ADDED OR PRODUCT IS DAMAGED. you have the final payment. the dealer wants that money. YOU WATCH HOW FAST THAT PILOT MAKES IT TO A LOCAL HONDA DEALER TO BE CORRECTED.
Credit card deposits are great because you can revoke payment with your credit card company. One word of caution: if you pay your bill in full it is almost impossible to do anything. That gives you 30-60 days (before the bill is paid) of borrowed time. Nothing that is charged to one's card is the "final"; that is why I hate paying with cash!
You should get info (in writing) from the dealer that the deposit is fully refundable, just to be on the safe side. Most dealers will only ask for the refundable ones some try to omit that but all will buckle (in my limited experience) if that is the deal breaker.
Make sure to check any reputational ranking at BBB and punish any firm/dealer that commits a foul. Take no prisoners! Right Brain?!
does the overall width of pilot (78in) account for two mirrors? just try to figure out if my garage is wide enough for it or maybe the driveway is more suitable.
I have been checking this board out for awhile. I actually bought a Pilot EX-L w/DVD for 30,600 plus tax and reg. I think this was pretty good deal. I believe I got such a good deal because I really did not want the DVD. But it is cool now! It is hard for me to tell what people paid on this board. Why all this over invoice or below MSRP talk? Because after options are added it is not so clear. So what do you all think about my deal?
If you look on Edmunds, MSRP for a pilot w/leather and DVD system the cost is 32,480. The invoice price is $29,264 For you to get that for $30,600, it is a great deal if it included shipping. Most people are only getting at best 600 to $1000 below MSRP in northern CA. You got almost 2000 below MSRP. Would you mind sharing which dealer you went to? I'm still looking
After several months' search, and several days of nervous waiting, now my Pilot was delivered to me yesterday. Took the advice from brain, atlay, etc, purchased the car from Ohio, a dealer near Cleveland, Ganley Honda. The lady's name is Rhonda, very very professional and helpful. More important, she seems to handle quite a lot of these out of state purchases and offered me a good deal. Initially, I was planning to come to pick up, she arranged the transport company to ship to me for 300 bucks fully insured. Literally, the whole process took only 2 days, she airborned me the forms and I signed and returned, the car was picked up by the transport company, Within 4 days, I got my car. So far, so good. Now, I need to wait for the Ohio title to come and go to the long line of local DMV to pay the tax and get the NJ title.
eric, congratulations. please share more your transaction details, e.g. how you managed to get the wrriten guarantee that the car has no mileage, brand new, no damage ever, etc. have a good driving. rob.
here is another opinion I received re: OoS vs local transactions. "As far as remote buy is concerned, usually local dealers provide post-sale service, such as inspection, oil change, washing, tuning etc for serveral years. This may compete with the $1000+ saved from a remote dealer." any comments on this???
I paid $900 over invoice, plus the $300 shipping fee. Not the lowest price posted here, but I guess among the low ones. They have the car just coming in, the color I wanted.
As for the written guarantee that the car has no mileage, brand new, no damage ever, you need to sign the odometer affidavit anyhow, the dealer has to tell you the actual mileage on the car. Rhonda(the dealer) told me the car has 4 miles on it. At the delivery, it has 5 miles. The shipping is insured by the transport company, they use the same transport truck to deliver to dealers. Rhonda told me not to accept the car if I find any damage. The bad weather this week prevented the car getting here a little earlier, but nothing happened to the car.
I don't have a trade-in, and my cross the road dealer is charging MSRP, and you need to wait for 3 to 5 months. Plus, never heard they offer free oil change, car wash. A dealer 30 miles away did mention this to me, but that's still too far for me to take advantage of that.
robmath: I bought an accord last year and I did get 4 free oil changes($27 each) and free car wash with every service ( would have loved it if it was every month :-)
if you car is worth any money fix whats wrong with car and sell privatly. OR be bent over the barrel and take what ever honda is going to offer. i dont recommend this type of deal. your in a no win situation. those are your two choices.
if i read your last post correctly. there is no way in hell any local dealer will compensate many services that would be rendered in terms of getting back money from out of state deal that you would of saved. out of state purchase saves you between $2000 and 2500 depending on your negotating skills. oil change for a honda pilot is $9.00. any sevice the dealer is offering you you are getting ripped off.
This is actually a form of advertising. The more often the dealer's name is in front of you, the more often you're willing to refer business to them and even be a repeat buyer. The services obviously differ in prices for different regions of the country, just like gas prices, but are all a small price to pay for a dealer looking to sell more cars. Take advantage of these offers and keep shopping smart!
Thank you to everyone's posts. It really helped when it came time to deal.
I just got back from the dealer and purchased my EX, Sage Brush for $27,358. Added Towing, Splash Guards and Cross Bars to bring the total to $28,455 (without taxes, title, license). The total drive away price was $30,094.98. I will take delivery hopefully next weekend, because the Pilot is due off the truck on 2/18.
Anything in particular I should be careful to check when I go through my inspection? Also, anyone know where I can get some great financing? Honda is "quoted" at 4.5% for 60 months. Is that a good deal?
Bianchi Honda in Pa just sent me an e-mail about a Honda Finance Special. Looks like you should qualify. When we purchased our Accord, we had credit union rates (Provident Credit Union in CA) and the dealer lowered their rates by 1/4 point below our credit union. Also if you look in the general warranty section, there are several Honda Dealers listed who will sell you a Honda extended warranty at well below list price. Good luck Hope this helps.
Dear Valued Customer,
Honda Finance is running a President's Day rate special on all new Honda models. We would have to submit your credit application between February 13-18, 2003 and you would have to take delivery no later than February 28, 2003. Your rate would depend on your credit score.
2.99% for up to 60 months - Super Preferred Rate 3.49% for up to 60 months - Preferred Rate
You could save alot of money in interest charges if you take advantage of this special offer. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in these special rates, especially if you are looking for a Pilot, Odyssey, CR-V, or Accord V6. I look forward to working with you in any way possible.
I wrote to two locations about this. They were listed on the Edmunds site under the Warranty discussion. This is the response I got from one person: Here is the info. you requested>

The other person I wrote to was: meganseaton1@yahoo.com
Yes, I do sell Honda Care on the Pilot. Honda Care is a very comprehensive plan that covers virtually every component excluding brakes, tires, and the battery. However, the battery is pro-rated and they will cover a third. The warranty gives you full roadside assistance, trip-planning, towing, and a rental car for up to six days. It's a lot like AAA but pays your parts and labor, zero deduct. Every Honda service dept throughout the US will be able to do warranty work.
The plans range from 5 yr / 75k, t0 7 yr / 100k. Let me know your driving habits and I can give you a price.
She did not give a specific price. On another note, my sister-in-law bought an Odyssey, right before the warranty was to expire, Honda mailed her an extended Warranty for free. I am not sure if that is typical or not. She was thrilled because 1 month later the computer went out and was a problem over $1000. That is the big danger with these computer engines.
Thanks for the financing special deals. I will take the email into the dealer with me this week when I take delivery. Do you think I will still be eligible even though I have lready "purchased" my Pilot even though we haven't secured the financing yet? I hope so.
What is the best price you've found for an EX in SF Area? So far, the Best I'm finding is $500 or $600 under MSRP. Any Dealers anyone has found that are doing better? Are prices dropping or stable?
So far, the best I can find in the SF area is 500-600 below MSRP. In post # 830 Juan225 claims to have gotten his for almost $2000 below MSRP, However, he has been silent since I and asked him to name the dealership. Kind of makes me wonder... On another note, some people claim that Honda of Corona are selling Pilots for $1000 below MSRP. They do have a large inventory but the dealer has not e-mailed me any prices. Of course to get that deal, if true, you would have to drive 400 miles each way.
Brain123 -- Can you email me (tdkmyk@msn.com)information (website)for the Nanuet Honda dealer you mentioned in one of your postings you liked in NJ. I like to use email rather then call but if you don't have that a number will do. I only see Naneut Honda dealer for New York via website. Do you know what kind of price I can get from them. Thanks
Auto2003: The rules of this board are: "no phone numbers or email contact information". If you say: "paid $500 above invoice for my Silver EX at Honda of Bloomfield, MI" then that would not get deleted.
Kirknchocolate: Could you tell us the price that was paid for the Pilot and the Ody? That would be as helpful as the name of the salesperson...
Our Odyssey included a lot of options, including roof rack and crossbars, and we also got the extended warranty. The Rear Entertainment System (RES) works great and understanding the laws of supply and demand, we still paid less than MSRP. We went to the "what others are paying" part of Edmunds, and couldn't believe how much some people were paying. But Ed took good care of us, and gave us everything he promised. He even kept our Oddy out of the snow for us when we picked it up. Ask for him. My sister also used Ed, per my recommendations, but I didn't ask her what they paid. Her husband hurt his back shovelling snow. But I know that they were really happy, and they loved Ed too.
I have been looking for the last few months for a Sage Brush EXL and haven't been able to find one dealer with this in stock or one willing to go below MSRP. Is this just my personal opinion or has anybody actually got below MSRP in CA? A couple of dealers [non-permissible content removed] me into coming to their dealership. Once I got there, all their talk about a great deal just vaporized. The others that seem to "promise" so-called great deals don't have the Pilot I need. Whats up with all the people trying to sell the Pilots in CA?
Any estimates on when Honda will be releasing its 2004 Pilot? The 2003 model has been on sale since June 2002...does this mean the 2004 model will be released around June 2003?
I don't waste my time going in to a dealer unless I get a price in writing. The best I have found so far in the Bay Area is $500-$600 below MSRP. If you go to the hondadotcom (hope they allow that) web site, you can type in the name of any dealer and go to the dealer web site. From there you can search their inventory. This way you see what they really have in stock. Stevens Creek just sent me pictures of 6 Pilots that they claimed to hve in stock but their inventory shows only 2. San Leandro promises things but when you go in, they rescind their offer. Fremont has been honest with me so far so I am going with them and waiting until the car I want comes in. Stevens Creek has been advertising 0 interest loans so if you can get that, it may be worth going MSRP. Many of the honda web sites have a finance calculater so you can see how much that is worth. My feeling is if I can't get a good deal, the 2004 cars should be out soon and they may have solved all the problems listed in the "Pilot problems" discusion when the 2004 comes out.
Have any of you made a purchase on the Pilot in WA state, if so would you mind e-mailing me about which dealers have the best price and on what trims? I am thinking of making a purchase soon and any suggestions would be helpful (Sweetiepie78@earthlink.net) TY
