I placed an order for 2004 Pilot with a dealer in Central NJ last week. He gave me a VIN number and said the vehicle is in transit. But I couldn't get any delivery ETA from him. What is the usual trend? Any one has any idea when I can expect my Pilot?

    TIA

Having a VIN is definitely a step in the right direction.

Ours took about a week after leaving the factory in Canada. But they even told us at one point the truck broke down, etc. So it was delayed delayed delayed. But, in the end, it showed up only one day later than they originally quoted.

Having a VIN number is good, but I don't know why he wouldn't give you an ETA. We bought a Pilot last month and the date of manufacture (when the VIN is generated and confirmed with the dealer) to the date of delivery should be no more than 2.5-3 weeks. Ours came from Canada to Philadelphia, so your experience should be the same.

I am moving to New England and it turns out that I can buy a Pilot EXL (no dvd or gps) for 30,660 (they don't discount them much apparently). I can get it cheaper here in FL but with tax it's basically a wash, plus it's more convenient to pick it up after we move instead of transporting it. My question is this:
Since I'll be buying it in July and the new models come out soon after that, should I be negotiating a better deal since in a matter of a month or two, my car will be "a year old" when the "05's come out. Thanks for any advice on this.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,754
my car will be "a year old" when the "05's come out

EXACTLY. For that price, I'd get a newer one, no question about it. I'd be willing to spend quite a bit more on a newer one, as a matter of fact. Why buy something that, when you drive it off the lot, would have one year more of deprecation? It would have to be a significant discount to make up for it.

    Actually, it's a toss up.

Yes, that Pilot may be "a year old", but it won't have any miles on it either.

So, four years later when you go to sell it, it'll have a years less miles on it than most similar ones making it worth more.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,754
It will be worth less than one that is a year younger but with the same miles. So if you were staring at 2 sitting on the lot, trying to decide which to buy, one is an '04 and one is an '05 and both have zero miles, what is it worth to you to take the one that is a year older? That's the question.

And that's not even getting into the possibilites of what changes they may make in '05. May be no changes, but may be big changes.

However, isn't it also possible that the new models will have a price increase and I could end up paying significantly more for the new model?
As far as new features, I don't care about a sunroof. The only thing that would make a big difference would be side curtain airbags but that's not going to happen in 2005 I understand.
By the way, does anyone know what a reasonable price would be for the towing package including hitch, oil and transmission coolers? They get about $950 which sure seems like a lot!

Ok.... I was skeptical at first when I read about buying at MP Honda in Ohio. I live in NJ and the prices I was getting at local dealers were no lower than 1K under MSRP. I like the Pilot but I just can't come to grips with paying 19 hundred over dealer cost. I understand supply and demand economics but this is ridiculous. I called MP honda for an EX Black with cloth saddle. They had it in one week at 4 hundred over cost @ 27,400. Flying out from LaGuardia at $70 one way ticket and driving the Pilot home... 7 hour drive to save 1600. I think it;s worth. MP Honda were great. they sent me pics of my pilot, set up financing, picked meup at the airport. TRUE rofessionals.
Something the dealers in jersey should learn.

I talked to my dealer yesterday he has a delivery date of 4/21, +/- 1 day. He also expected to have my VIN, but he didn't email it as promised. The vehicle was to be manufactured 4/6-4/9.

Since they are built in Alabama, I wouldn't expect more than a week for transit once you have the VIN.

They're built in Canada. Ontario, to be more specific.

Anyone have any buying experience for Pilot in the New Orleans area? Looking to buy one the next few months.
  • freddy2004freddy2004 Member Posts: 2
Just bought a Pilot EX last month. Before buying it, I called up many local dealers and many were saying that they could give me a good price but I wouldn't be able to see the car in five or six months -- many were out of stock. The car is so hot that many dealers are not willing to negotiate. Then a friend of mine recommended the sales manager in Serremonte Honda. After a few phone calls back and forth, we settled a price about $1500 over invoice but I was not sure about the color. Then, on the day I went to check the car out, I found a better color (Sandstone) that I liked better. So I asked if he had one. Yes, he said. He then showed me a brand new one just off the truck, only 4 miles in it, with plastic protective covers still on here and there. After we sat down that figured out the final price, I asked for $1000 over invoice. He said no. We finally agreed upon $1300 over Edmund invoice including destination charge. He would also throw in a set of wheel locks and protective door strips free of charge.
The financial person mentioned extended warranty to me but I trusted Honda's reputation. He didn't explain anything more and didn't try to sell anything else to me. I wrote him a check and told him to charge $2500 on my discover card. This buying experience was almost as pleasant as my last buying experience when I bought my BMW 325i -- no haggle -- settled a price over the internet then get a little bit better depending on the car you would like to get on site.
I didn't trade in my old car. I got the Edmund dealer suggested price (the highest one) on my car through a private party deal. It was easy and pleasant on the net since I didn't have to post anything and showed many people on my old car.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
freddy, sounds like exactly the right approach to getting the best deal on both the new car and getting rid of the old one.

I just wish the state I lived (WA) wouldn't screw you on the sales tax. Only dealers are allowed to charge tax on the delta, so if you sell privately, you effectively end up paying sales tax on whatever your old car is worth.

Finally got our Pilot EX-L from Open Road Honda, Edison, NJ. Just base model. Nothing else added. Got it for $29460 including destination. Fees and taxes extra. I think this is good deal... Did a lot of shopping around... I got the car after a week of getting the VIN number. When I took the vehicle from the dealer, he also gave me wheel locks and a plastic floor mat in the cargo area "free". I am not sure if this floor mat comes with the vehicle. Forgot to mention - got two key chains too :-)))

I used internet dept to get the quotes and emails to bargain...

    Sam.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I'm in WA and I don't understand why you think you are getting "screwed" on the sales tax?

As you pointed out, you only pay tax on the difference. In a lot of other states, you will pay tax on the entire price of the new car!

We are actually lucky we have this considering how we get taxed to death on everything else!

Oh yeah...I have to keep reminding myself...we have no state income tax! :)
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
In WA state, if you trade your car in with a dealer, you pay sales tax on the delta between the new car price and your trade value. If you instead sell your car privately, you pay sales tax on the entire price of the new car.

The net effect is that selling privately rather than trading with the dealery carries a tax penalty of about 9% of the value of the trade.

Several states have tested this type of law in courts and found it illegal to reserve this tax break to dealers only. In these states, you can file paperwork to show you sold a car within 90-days of buying a new car and get a tax credit for the value of the car you sold.

If you are negotiating a deal and mention you are considering selling privately, dealers will typically mention this tax consequence. This break allows them to reduce their trade-in offer because they know you will have to pay extra tax if you sell privately. It also discourages shopping at non-local dealerships because of the difficulty, time, and expense of driving your trade-in to distant dealerships for a deal that may or may not be consumated.

This special break to dealers is maintained in the WA legislature at considerable expense by the dealer lobby and with generous contributions to legislators' campaign funds.

    In short, it's a crock.

what interest rate does mike pruitt honda offer on the purchase of 2004 honda pilots? also, what is the length of the loan?

    thanks - jess
  • shooterdshooterd Member Posts: 24
I think you should shop around at different lending institutions and find your own best interest rate and decide on how long you want to pay, set up financing with whoever gives you the best rate for the loan length you're looking for, then keep it to yourself until you see what you are offered by the Honda dealer. If they can beat it, go with them, if not, you have financing already set up and ready to go.

Got a quote for an EX-L for MSRP from Burnsville Honda via edmunds quote service. Guess I will look at Toyota Highlander.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,754
I guess you haven't read this board. Midwest is the cheapest area, it seems to me. Folks on the coast are having them shipped over because its so much less. But if one quote scares you away, then so be it. Good luck.

    I disagree and don't think it's a "crock" but that's O.K.

I had never heard of states doing what you say. I know, in California buyers pay the FULL sales tax based on the price of the car. The trade makes no difference.

Also, trades are worth what they are worth. If we don't offer enough, the shopper will either sell it themselves or look for another dealer willing to pay more for it.

    Nothing sinister here.
  • wilkichwilkich Member Posts: 52
Freddy2004. Glad to hear that your experience went well. I went to Honda of Oakland and it was a less than pleasant experience. First, the Pilot on the lot had a $4000 markup over MSRP which made me laugh out loud. The salesguy was pretty nice and not pushy at all. However, over the course of two days, I received 3 followup phone calls from a very aggressive sales manager. We really want to buy in Oakland so that the city gets the sales tax but I think we will look at the Serramonte dealer. We are also thinking about going to LA as previous posts made it seem like there were better deals and more cars there.

    What are those states?
How can I find the information related to this matter?
    Thanks in advance..
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Just about every state has car registration information linked on the net. Sometimes you have to visit the motor vehicle page and other times the info is on a tax page.

For example, here's the FAQ for New York that spells out how NY collects car sales taxes.

  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
Sorry, I don't recall the specific state (or states) that do allow sales tax credit for private non-dealer trade situations.

State sales tax rules are available on the net, but are hard to find in one place.

isellhondas, I you can certainly look at a dealers-only sales tax break as better than no break at all. OTOH, if the break were to be eliminated all-together tomorrow, states would presumably see their tax revenues rise so that tax rates could be lowered for everyone, or at least, a sale tax rate hike could be postponed. It is, after all, a zero-sum game when the day is done. Every tax break has to eventually be paid for by everyone.

We're way off topic with respect to how much people are paying for Pilots, so I'll bow out on that.

I was not able to get the Twin Cities dealers to deal much at all. As a matter of fact I had a very bad experience with one of them. I did get a fantastic deal from Windy City Honda in Chicago thru their internet manager. They are only about a mile from the Midway airport, so you can fly to Chicago and drive back the same day. In the end, I did not purchase the car (yet) since I am in the middle of getting a mortgage. But once I am ready to buy I will definitely go with either Mike Pruitt Honda in Ohio or Windy City Honda in Chicago. The internet manager at both dealerships were truly wonderful to work with. But Chicago is much closer and airfare is cheaper to Chicago than to Cleveland or Akron from Msp.
    Good Luck.

Funny how the high dealer fee is almost the same as the amount they gave you above the Kelley price. The old shell game is still alive and well. Even though you got a fairly decent price, when it comes to trade-ins there are no free lunches. In the end, they always get it back somewhere. No matter how much folksy family crap they throw at you its still strictly business.

Yesterday I purchased a new 2004 EX-L Sandstone Metallic for my wife, and couldn't be more pleased with my experience at Duval Honda. They sold it for 2% over invoice ($28,826, i.e. $565 over invoice), plus a $279 dealer fee. In addition, they offered $300 more than the Kelley trade-in value for my 97 Olds Silhouette van with 113,000 miles (the van was showing its age!). There were no dealer add-ons, like fabric protectant, etc. It was a clean deal. My out the door price, after the $3,000 trade-in allowance and adding on tax, title and fees, was $27,858. The atmosphere was low-key and very professional.

The low mark-up surprised me. There are about 5 or 6 Honda dealers locally, and initially they were all talking in terms of small amounts off MSRP, and two had dealer ad-on stickers that grossly inflated the price. So I called Costco to see if their auto buying service could do better. Turns out that no local Honda dealers were participating in the Costco program, but Coggin Honda in Orlando did. Their price was "only" $900 over invoice, so I was prepared to drive the 100 miles to get the better price.

Before I did, I emailed each of the internet salesman at the local dealers, and to my surprise, they each offered to match the Coggin Orlando pricing. I went to Duval Honda, and they had the exact car I was looking for. If I was willing to sign that day, they would do even better, at just 2% over invoice. Obviously I jumped at the opportunity.

So, today, I'm a happy camper with new EX-L at a price I could afford.

Just returned with my EX Black with Saddle cloth interior from Mike Pruitt. I live in Northern NJ and could not get a quote lower that 29K. I emailed MP and received a quote of 27,400. Here's how it all went.
*Accepted quote and they had my car via a swap in one week.
*Sent me pictures of my EX with VIN. Did not even have to ask for it.
*Finaced thru MP, got a good low rate through Chase Bank.
*Sent me ALL the paperwork (with stickey arrows to show me where to sign) via Airborne Express with a PRE-PAID return Airborne Express envelope.
*Flew out of LaGuardia at a cost of $70 on Air-Tran and guess who told me about it... Mike Pruitt.
*Was picked up at the airport by Mike Pruitt driver.
*Arrived at dealership. Car was already.. walked me through the particulars of the car. Was in and out in one hour!! Even suggested a great hamburger place close by.
Drove home in 7 hours with 2 stops.
    Pilot drove great!!

Total cost savings including airfare and car service to airport $1400!!!!!

Thank You Mike Pruitt. NJ Honda dealers take notice on how to do business....

After searching for 2 months for a full sized SUV we decided to go with a Honda Pilot. We drove all the competition, (Durango, Explorer, Pacifica, Grand Cherokee, Murano and even a few 4 door trucks).

We then tried to get a deal locally and struck out. Every Honda dealer within 100 miles wanted MSRP, the best internet deal we could do locally was 300 under MSRP.

During our research I found some folks getting great deals in OH, but OH was 450 miles away. A quick email to Mike Pruitt Honda in Akron, OH confirmed a price of $400 over invoice and that they would find an LX or order 1. The search was a bust so the internet sales manager ordered a Silver LX and honored the agreed upon price. 2 weeks later the car was in and we picked it up yesterday.

The internet sales manager and the finance manager at MP Honda were stellar. In and out in under an hour. It was by far the easiest car puchase I've ever done, and this is our 3rd car purchased over the net.

While we were in OH we visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that's a story for another post.

I cannot say enough about our out of state purchase, I'd do it again in a heart beat. Mike Pruitt Honda is the best!

While looking at the MDX I had a friend that told me about a broker in the bay area named NorCal Auto Brokers. They helped my friend find a TSX at a really good price and had it delivered right to his home. When I called about the MDX the guy was really cool and helpful. He mentioned that I might want to look at the Pilot as well...which is why I am here. Anyway, you might want to give them a call and see what they can get you on a Pilot.

Drove numerous vehicles this weekend and we are close to deciding on the Pilot w/nav. But the dealer put a hard sell on claiming the cars need 6-8 week delivery. Does anyone have any idea if these are available or not in the NYC area? I don't need the car till 6/15 and I'd rather keep shopping for a few weeks. Thanks

I live in south Jersey. I was trying to buy a Pilot from the local dealers. David Michael in Freehold quoted me "non-negotiable internet price" - MSRP. DCH Academy quoted me around $800 under MSRP. Others were in between. After found out all these talks about Mike Pruitt in OH, decided to give it a shot. Turn out to be the best car buying experience ever. Picked up my silver EX-L with RES last Saturday (4/24)from Mike Pruitt for $400 over dealer invoice. I was on the same flight with Joe (see message 2237). Went through the same thing with Joe (got VIN when the vehicle was in assemble line, delivery date. received picture when delivered...). The one-hour in the dealership, 50 minutes of it spent on getting familiar with the vehicle, 10 minutes on paper work. That was it.

I got to tell you the internet manager in Mike Pruitt was so honest, professional and helpful. The way they treat their customer is unbelievably well. I truly respect the way they conduct business.

The 7+ hours drove back was little long to me. But for $1600 of savings, I have no problem with it at all.

Hello. I've been lurking awhile and have been following all of the posts regarding prices people paid on their Pilots. I am looking to purchase a Pilot in the next 6-8 weeks. It seems that Mike Pruitt Honda is quite impressive. I live in the NY metro area. Has anyone had an experience with trading in their vehicle to MP Honda? I'm curious as to the process as well as how fair of a price given on the trade-in. All posts appreciated. Thanks!
  • canajocanajo Member Posts: 4
Mike Pruitt gave me a very low price range on my trade, sight unseen. I told them I was uncomfortable driving the trade from Connecticut and then getting stuck with the lower end of the range. They told me it worked both ways...that they didn't want to promise me more than what it was worth as they had been stuck paying too much for trades. I decided not to buy from them as they required a non-refundable deposit and would not provide me with a written contract...only an email with the price on it. I bought from Classic Honda in Streetsboro, OH who matched Mike Pruitt's price and they were OUTSTANDING! Their deposit was fully refundable and they provided me with a contract. I sold the trade myself on www.autotrader.com for a lot more than what either dealer was going to offer me. By the way, I got calls on autotrader from NYC, NJ and PA so I would recommend you give that web site a try. Classic Honda picked me up from the airport and provided me with lunch. The drive back through PA I-80 was beautiful and it was a wonderful experience.

I also live in south Jersey and pretty much set to pick up my vehicle from Mike Pruitt in OH. I'm getting a Sandstone EX-L with Navigation at $600 over dealer invoice. I tried several dealers in my area and they couldn't match it. David Michael in Freehold said the best they can do is $500 below MSRP and congratulated me on getting such a low price.

I also received my VIN number but no picture. I keep asking the salesman to send me one and he says that they are really busy and doesn't think he can get around to it. Who did you deal with at Mike Pruitt? If you can't mention people's names on this discussion initials would be fine.

I'll post my full experience once I get my vehicle.

It was a lady (can't mention name here). I did not ask for it. She sent it to me on her day off (different email address than the salesXX@mikepruitthonda.com). She was really nice and helpful.

Most everybody has such great things to say about Mike Pruitt Honda in OH and all my local dealers are qouting MSR or above for the Pilot. I'm a first time shopper for a car (live in New York) and complete novice at this. Can any fellow new yorker or anyone else tell me how this works since Ohio can't collect NYS and NYC tax. I assume I'm still obligated to pay the very hefty state and city taxes (directly) but have no idea how to do this.

Also, how does it work if there is a problem with the car after devilery. Will any New York Honda service department handle issues that come up with an Ohio purchased car. Sorry if these questions seem so basic but I really have no clue. Thanks for any help!
  • joeruby070153joeruby070153 Member Posts: 4
Tax works like this.. You won't pay any Ohio state tax..You will get a 30 day "tag" for driving but you will need to register the car in NY of course to get your plates. At that time you will pay the NY state tax. Mike Pruitt will walk you through that process.

As far as service issues... if it is a warranty issue any Honda dealer will service the car.
I saved $1400 and think it was well worth the litte extra effort I put in... e.g. the 7 hour drive from Ohio to NJ

Does anyone have any recent experiences to share on purchasing a Pilot EX-L or EX-L with NAV in either Washinton or Northern Oregon? I am seeing a lot of the Seattle area dealers posting prices at $3500-$4500 above MSRP which just seems crazy considering what I am seeing other people pay on this discussion group...

Twins7...I am getting ready to enter the fray in the next few months of purchasing a 05 Pilot in the Twin Cities area. Your post confirms my fears of having to pay MSRP or higher. I live in the vicinity of BVL Honda, but have had bad service from them in the past. Willing to travel to DLH, RST, FSD, MSN and possibly MKE for purchase. Any luck on your end so far?

After looking into the pricing at Sam's Club, Costco, AAA and several local dealers, I learned about Mike Pruitt Honda from this message board. Since my last experience with a Virginia Honda dealer was like a bad dream, I was a little hesitant to purchase another Honda. However, the Internet lady that helped me was very professional and courteous. I placed an order a few weeks ago and flew up to Akron from Greensboro on Saturday 5/1 to pick up my Sagebrush EX. While the drive back was a little long, it no problem and I wouldn't hesitate to buy there again. My experience and pricing was just as described by many others on this board. Thanks Edmunds and MPH.

I have not been able to post my new car experience sooner since I've been occupied with my new ride. I picked up my Sandstone Metallic Pilot EX-L with Navigation on Friday. My brother in-law and I flew from NYC's Laguardia to Ohio and was picked up at the airport by the salesman that I've been dealing with. We were out of the dealership within an hour. The salesman was great. He went over all of the features and even helped me program the navigation system for the long drive back to NJ. Worked like a charm. He is the man! I can't say enough about Mike Pruitt Honda. They were professional and very easy to deal with.

    Hi there,

I purchased a Honda Odyssey EX-L on April 28 with Burnsville Honda in Burnsville, MN. I paid invoice - $500 (Honda mkting support incentive?) for the van. I could not get a Pilot for less than MSRP - $500. We love the van and we could not justify the price difference between Pilot and Odyssey at this time. We liked Toyota Highlander but it is a bit too small and it was hard to get kids in and out of the 3rd row. Liked Sienna but again, hard to justify the price difference. Good luck with your search/purchase!
