Can anyone that was successfull at buying a pilot for MSRP or lower in SoCal. Can you give me the name of the dealership and the salesperson's name. Thanks a bunch in advance.

Per www.Honda-Pilot.org, a couple different folks down in Houston claimed to have paid $50-$100 under MSRP with accessories added at dealer cost. Also, no long waits....

    That's what they're saying anyway
  • sailing216sailing216 Member Posts: 98
The Under MSRP may be true. I did a search in autotrader.com on the pilot just to see what I would find, and there was a dealer in Houston if I remember correctly that advertised $500 off pilots internet special. I'm thinking that it was the demo model. Not sure if the ad is still on there, it was last week. $100 off MSRP for a Demo, ---it can be done. My dealer still has 3 silver EXs and a White exl demo on the lot from 3 weeks ago. They sold their black LX and Red EXLRes, all at MSRP, no more. I'm not seeing the Oddy demand lines here in Ohio.

    Endollan;

I got Pilot at MSRP, they were available in few dealers. If you give me your email address, I can email it to you. They don't allow me to post names and numbers.

This is a follow up to message #221. In my last posting, I said I had a good experience at Hardin Honda in North Orange County, Southern California. I said that I was to get the siler pilot Ex in about 2 weeks. Well, it has been 11 days and I now have my silver pilot ex in my garage. Once again, I had paid $29152(28692 + 460 destination) + tax and license which is about $578 below MSRP. I had a great experience working with the salesmen, Renaldo & Mario. It wasn't easy getting the price, but they worked with me. If you do go to Hardin, ask for them and tell them Stephen sent you. Renaldo was always there following up on me and doing his best to get the car I wanted. It took a little long, but that's because of the low supply. All in all, I had a great experience at Hardin Honda!!!

That's great to hear and congratulations Stephen! How is their stock of Pilots? Do they plan on getting more shipments anytime soon? Did you purchase an extended warranty?

I'll wait for the new 4-runner now that pictures have been posted showing exterior details. I am really disappointed with the Honda/Acura dealers not to mention the truck itself. I'm hoping that Toyota will come through and offer us an SUV worth waiting for. For those of you who purchased the Pilot, I wish you well with your new SUV and hope that it meets your need, but myself, I am not willing to spend that kind of money (34K and up, depending where you live) for a vehicle that does not offer anything. I am hoping....I am praying Toyota does not let the consumers down on this one. Just my 2 cents.

I checked Hardin Honda from the internet and at least one complaint was file against them date 2/6/02. I guess it is not an easy job to pick a good Honda dealer.

  • davisdogdavisdog Member Posts: 99
That complaint looks a little fishy...I would have a serious case of buyers remorse if I paid $29K for a pre-owned 2001 accord also...I can imagine how hurting that person really is...

I sent them a Pilot offer today and they never got back to me. Another dealer took it at MSRP.

After searching many dealerships in NY and LI, I finally found a Silver Pilot EX-L at MSRP in Connneticut at Cardinal Honda. I'm picking it up next week. No DIO's or high pressure sales people either.

Does anyone have information on the extended warranty? I believe it is $1500 for 100,000 mile warranty. Is it worth it?
  • homerghomerg Member Posts: 30
Your price is a little more than what hondawarranty.com quotes, but not something that looks like a gouge to me. You will get a lot of debate if it's worth it or not. When it comes down to it, if you use it, then it's worth it, but if you don't, then it's not. Dealers make a lot of profit on those things, so that says to me that chances are you won't spend as much on repairs on your car as you did on the warranty, but that's no consolation to the guy who has to pay 2 to 3 k for some major motor work because he didn't buy the warranty.
  • pilotdadpilotdad Member Posts: 12
I paid MSRP for my red EX in Colorado Springs. The dealerships here and in the Denver metro area aren't charging more than that yet, but some have dealer installed accessories. The problem is finding one. Some dealers are sold out for six months.
  • rgobelrgobel Member Posts: 7
Hondacare can be sold by other vendors besides dealers for a lot less. I would consider it worth it for the prices listed at this site http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5414. Basically $875 - 7 years/100K miles. A savings of over $600 from most dealers ;o).
  • murphybrown123murphybrown123 Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the information and link to the odyclub website. I found several Honda Dealers (Kentucky and Maryland) selling the 7 year 100,000 mile warranty on the Pilot for $1175. Since it is HondaCare, it is good at Honda Dealers across the country and is no different than the plan offered by the dealer at nearly $2,000. I still haven't decided to buy the warranty however...it's a Honda, I don't expect any problems.
  • rgobelrgobel Member Posts: 7
Remember that you don't have to buy the warranty at the time of purchase. I believe you can buy the extended warranty up until the manufacturer's warranty runs out 3yrs/36K. There is a little surcharge (I think about $50) but it may be better to invest that money while you consider it and then it will be a wash and in the meantime you will have the piece of mind knowing that you had time to make the right decision ;o)
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
how can you say "but myself, I am not willing to spend that kind of money"? the pilot, even at msrp, is the best 'bang-for-the-buck' on the suv market! you think any toyota suv will be less???? you obviously haven't been shopping very long! lol. for instance: pilot ex-l msrp: $30980. toyota 4-runner limited INVOICE:$32242!!! msrp:$36105!!! even if you pay invoice for the 4-runner, your still getting less truck for more buck....not the smartest buying decision ever, i think.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Toyota 4runner is more "truck" for the buck. If you are really considering buying a "truck". The honda is a nice SMV, but the 4runner is a serious tried and true offroad vehicle. Don't get me wrong, I like the pilot, but the 2 vehicles are suited for much different purposes. However, I understand that this may not be relevant to what the general SUV shopper is trying to buy.

Does anyone know dealers in Chicago area selling Pilot at or under MSRP?
  • mattlissymattlissy Member Posts: 7
Six weeks ago a drove the Honda Pilot. I liked it very much. The salesmen knew I liked it. Wanted to sell it to me for 3K over MSRP. I laughed.
So I hammered him on the pilots low tow ratings,
no low speed 4WD, Mini van shifter, no truck frame
and so on. I told him to call me when he could sell at or below MSRP. 10 days later a drove the new Envoy XL. Larger, stronger and the SLT with technology package was far beyond the pilots contents. Also drove very smooth. 2 weeks ago the honda salesman called me back, said he was ready the sell at MSRP! I said, you should have sold it a MSRP a few weeks ago, I have purchased an Envoy XL below MSRP with 0% fin. Just pure greed from these dealers. 0% is forcing them to sell at a lower price!! Good luck to you all. Don't pay over list, Please.
  • eagleeye3eagleeye3 Member Posts: 44
Wow...Envoy XL - good luck. While that Envoy is on its "last" legs in 5 years (not to mention its 2nd transmission), the average Pilot will be commanding top $$. The shortcomings you cite won't seem to matter when one is comparing a vehicle that is about to blow to a Honda.
  • mattlissymattlissy Member Posts: 7
Different strokes for different folks. I needed a frame based SUV. A real SUV. I tow a 22 foot boat.
The Pilot can't handle this task. As far as resale value GMC trucks are one of the highest.
The Pilot is more of a socker mom transporter. By the way, did of know the transmission in the Pilot
is made by GM! GM auto truck transmissions are now the best in the world. Yes, in the early to mid 90's they had problems. Its a different story now. Also, did you know GM won the Malcolm Baldrige award for 2002. You need to do your research.
  • rms41rms41 Member Posts: 80
Are you sure about GM making transmissions for Honda? Here's a quote from a December 21, 1999 press release from Honda:

"Honda will supply GM with advanced V-6 Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) engines and automatic transmissions."

It sounds like Honda is supplying GM, not the other way around.
  • rms41rms41 Member Posts: 80
The window sticker for my Pilot says the country of origin for the transmission is Japan.
  • sjwsmwsjwsmw Member Posts: 131
And what does any of it have to do with the title of the topic?
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
...seems there is a definite drift forming here. Please keep your comments pertaining to Pilot prices and purchase experiences.

    Thanks!
  • rms41rms41 Member Posts: 80
Someone posted that GM made the Pilot transmissions. That needed a response. We have to be allowed a little drifting to reply.
  • zorglubzorglub Member Posts: 79
No drifting for you for 2 weeks!! :)
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
karen, if you cesure the rest of us for drifting, please censure the morons that start the drifting in the 1st place...lol.
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
A little drift is normal and I usually let it pass as long as it gets back on topic in a few posts. However, there was a definite current of incivility beginning to form, so I felt it best to..doing my Barney Fife impression...nip it in the bud. :-)

The Pilot is selling significantly over MSRP in the Pacific Northwest.
  • raincityraincity Member Posts: 2
    raybear,
    Where this info from?
Why in Pasific Northwest Pilot can't be sold for MSRP.
    It is not true
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
prices on the west coast, from what i hear are going well above MSRP...midwest, at or slightly above with equipment adds, and eastend pilots are going somewhere in the middle...did some research on honda's interactive site at work today.
  • eagleeye3eagleeye3 Member Posts: 44
The Pilot can be had at MSRP with no forced DIO's at several locations in San Diego and Riverside County. No bait and switch. I bought my black EX-L 2 weeks ago from a coastal SD County dealer with zero hassles. If the Pilot is going for over MSRP in Northwest, one would be wise to check out the base MDX (if available and going at MSRP) before "caving in".

I picked up my Sage Pilot EXL this week, and I love the way it feels. I waited about 4 weeks to get the vehicle at $350 below MSRP. I paid $30,630, plus $20 for the dealer to do the registration paperwork , a $10 state inspection fee, plus sales tax. I did not have to buy any dealer installed accessories.

I submitted requests for price quotes via cyberspace to about ten dealers within a thirty minute drive of my home in Westchester Couny. The prices quoted were all over the map, from $350 below to $2000 above MSRP. My previous vehicle, a 2000 Odyssey was still in excellent condition, so I figured I could wait if it took a while for delivery. The dealer with the best price faxed me the written order at home, and I put down a credit card deposit of $200. I never had to set foot in a dealership, saving me a lot of hassle and wasted time. Luckily, the new Pilot was available very quickly.

The dealer was even nice enough to take a personal check at delivery, saving me a trip to the bank. Everything seemed fine until I went out to the Pilot to drive home, and found there were no floor mats. The window sticker lists carpeted floor mats as standard equipment. They looked around for the mats and said they couldn't find them. Since I had been cheated out of floor mats by another car dealer in the past, I was very suspicious. I told the sales manager at the dealership that I wouldn't accept the car until the mats were installed. They were still unable to find the mats, so I left. The next day they called to tell me the mats were lost, so they ordered another set of original equipment mats which arrived the following day. When I went to pick up the Pilot, they gave me a free second set of Pilot winter mats as an apology for having to come back to pick up the vehicle. I was very satisfied.

In sum, it is a great vehicle, and I feel I got a very fair price, given the demand and the quality of the vehicle. My well laid plan to go to the dealership only once to pick up my Pilot was foiled, but only a little bit. Now if I could get them to deliver my next vehicle to my house, that would be great! I hate going to car dealerships!

    doctormark,

It would be better if you can name that dealer so that folks like me can try to get this car at no more than MSRP.
  • doctormarkdoctormark Member Posts: 7
I bought my Pilot at $350 below list from the Honda dealership in Nanuet, NY, located in Rockland County, about twenty minutes north on the Palisades Parkway from the GW Bridge.

I beleive that the price I paid is only available if you get them to quote via the internet.
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
...generally, dealers will go $100-$500 off any car you inquire about via the net...if you want a pilot at MSRP, make sure you order the truck and SPECIFICALLY tell them to add NOTHING upon arrival of the vehicle. if you buy one in stock, the dealer may have already added equipment, so there is your fee for taking IMMEDIATE delivery.
  • sjwsmwsjwsmw Member Posts: 131
Are the Honda dealers able to order the Pilots based on what the customer wants, or are they just matching up the orders with pre-determined allocation?
In other words, when I go and plunk down my deposit, are they building the car for me?

    Thanks.

Got my EX (no leather) with running boards, wood panelling, Lojack, and extended warrarty for $31,600. I really think that this thing is a better vehicle than the Mercedes ML320. I like the ride better, and hopefully it will be as realiable as my 94 Accord has been. I really wanted the ML320, but couldn't justify paying more for less of a car. Perhaps the German's will get my money on my next car purchase.
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
you've posted the same thing all over the place...try to take some time and change your post to go with the topic so we dont have to see the same thing on every discussion.

to answer your question, take a red pilot ex for example...they are all identical, so why do you care whether yours comes from scratch or from dealer allocation? if you want additional equipment, thats all done at the dealer. this way, you dont have to wait EVEN LONGER to get "exactly what you want".
  • sjwsmwsjwsmw Member Posts: 131
But you didn't take the time to read them apparently.
I didn't ask about the dealer accessories.

I care because dealers are telling different stories. I hear from one that they can order and give me a build and delivery date, another says it's just, wait until one comes in like you want it.
  • bowkebowke Member Posts: 169
dealers approach this differently...the pilot that you want can be bought 3 ways:

    1. in stock (rare)
    2. dealer trade (if you can handle 50-250 miles on it at delivery)
    3. on order (leave a deposit and wait)

all 3 pilots will be identical in all ways when they arrive.

the 2 stories you got from dealers are both true...1 dealer pre-sells them, and the other will depend on whether your salesperson dials your phone # quicker than the guy in the next office dials his customers #. this is a risky way to buy, and i would drop your deposit at dealer #1, as this gives you first shot at it when it arrives, no matter how many people want it. this also gives you say-so in what is added to it.

dealer #2 wants them all in stock so they can add accessories you may not want and charge you for them anyway.

if you want nothing added, tell dealer #1 specifically not to touch it besides clean-up.

Honda Pilot at msrp or under. THANKS
  • yellowjacket3yellowjacket3 Member Posts: 1
Recently purchased my Pilot at Milton Martin Honda for MSRP. Tricks attempted by other Atlanta area Honda dealers: Refusing to back off of adding over-inflated Dealer Installed Options; Not negotiating in good faith (attempting to change the price after taking a credit card for deposit). Milton Martin stuck to the deal I worked (which I confirmed in writing) and made sure I was happy with the vehicle before leaving the lot - class act.
