" If I could get 2.4L G6 with alloys, ABS/TC and an MP3 player for around C$22-23K I would be interested. I suspect the 2.4L models will be strippers, that's what most of the 2.2L Grand Ams were when I saw them on the lots. "
    -end quote-

Or you could buy it used, as lease returns or whatever, in about 2 years for half that price. Most American cars, with the exception of a few, like the Mustang, just dive as far as resale value, so it is best to wait two, or more years for the price to settle down. Considering how long cars last now-a-days, even an older car with 40k to 60K miles on her is not too bad a gamble for reliability. And if it is not reliable, why buy it new? Most domestic cars I bought had the two or three, and sometimes eight problems mainly within the first three months or so. Used one's have been fixed already - that is the GM way of testing cars too ;-) I would look over the road test data and see how this car compares with Altima, Mazda6, and Accord , and do a test drive of the G6 before buying. It looks pretty sharp. GM is building cars better, it appears.

I have a thing about new cars in that I won't buy used. I would buy used for a 3rd summer car but for me, new is king. I keep my cars 7-8 years on average so resale isn't a big issue either.

I won't be in the market for another 2-3 years at least as my 2000 Intrigue is running well.

If Saturn can truely produce the Åura as they claim without turning out another rattly product (C&D and CU routinely pan Saturn interiors and my drives in them including Red Line do nothing to refute that), then it will be a very nice addition to their lineup! The powertrain sounds especially nice.

Apparently Aura will be built at the Fairfax plant in Kansas (where a lot Epsilon product including Malibu and possibly G6 are built).

Minor correction, Kurt - G6 is built at GM's Lake Orion, Michigan plant
  • clinenbergerclinenberger Member Posts: 6
I havent had that problem, but have had other problems with interior. My new g6 gt special ordered came with a bolt rolling around in the dash. Dealership had to completely remove the entire dash to locate, was by the heater box. Also been having problems with the headliner making a popping noise, seems to be worse when it is below 50 degrees. Anybody else have this problem, and how do you fix it? Frustrated!
  • rbdelirbdeli Member Posts: 1
My G6 has been a gem except for one problem that I think is easily correctable. At speeds above 40 MPH I am getting excessive wind noise out of the driver's side.

I looked at side and it appears the driver door molding is a little higher than the back door on driver's side. Passenger side looks completely even and no noise.

Looks like one of those little fixable nuisances that you generally don't have with Toyota's or Hondas.

"Looks like one of those little fixable nuisances that you generally don't have with Toyota's or Hondas".

Don't be so sure. Our neighbour had an Accord with auto transmission issues and a couple of trim issues also. Believe it or not, Honda and Toyotas are not trouble free or made perfectly.

Does anybody know when The G6 GTP will hit the dealers, and how much it will cost?
  • exalteddragon1exalteddragon1 Member Posts: 729
Why is it that the only interrior dash color for the G6 is black?

Thte Altima has at least 2 that i know of, black and grey. WHy don't the folks at GM make another choice... like Orange, or dark orange? It would sure make all that chrome look classy. Not everyone buying this vehicle wants a Darth-Vader interrior.

Just my 2 cents. What do you guys think?
  • m1miatam1miata Member Posts: 4,551
May have a black dash so that there is little light reflection on the windshield. Just a thought. Some Chrysler 300M's had a problem with refections off the dash, so a flat black may be a good thing.

According to 'Automotive News', the G6 convertible will not be released in Sept. as planned. Apparently GM did not account for the fact that they were going to have an open-air version of the G6. So, they have to provide the car with a stronger/more stable underside as well as make some interior alterations. Look for the convertible sometime after the first of year - 2006.
  • bigdaddycoatsbigdaddycoats Member Posts: 1,058
Yeah, the best time to launch a convertible is in Jan. - perfect weather in the midwest and north. According to GM, it was always planned for then and has not been delayed.
  • champchamp Member Posts: 6
Of course GM is going to say that. Given their status right now, they can't admit to a huge blunder like this. But trust me, this car was supposed to be released late summer/early-fall 2005 not sometime in 2006.
  • exalteddragon1exalteddragon1 Member Posts: 729
nonono, that makes no sense, GM makes so many different cars, not all of the dashes are black. They know how to do it so that it does not reflect.

I think they are missing the big picture here. Many people will shy off an excellent car like this just because of the dash color. This is not a market where the customer will take what you give them.

Also, GM is IMO making a serious mistake in marketing the 3.9L. They are not trumpeting anything; they are not giving it a special name like VQ or Northstar. The engine cover looks bland. Why don't they make it look wild to suit the image of the G6 buyer they wish to procure?

Then, on that cover, all they need to do is put the words VVT and DoD on it, and they will see a lot more younger people looking into the car. GM finally has some technology to advertise. Why don't they do it?

This company is starting to look like MCI, and you know what happened to those people. Anyone remember getting $1600 cell phone bills? This is the same sort of mistake.

Lutz should have caught this. The G6 is a awesome car, but they are sure marketing it wrong.

And what's with the coup/convertible? Those rear lights suck. The sedan’s rear lights look much better. Why couldn’t they have either kept the same lights, or made them as close as possible to the sedan.

I like this car, but man, as if GM did not have enough problems with the UAW sucking up profits and R&D money like a sponge, Lib organizations suing it left and left (pardon the pun) just for waking up in the morning, stricter regs from California, and now their core business people are incompetent too?

Sooner or later the American car shopper will have no choice but to kneel down before a Japanese master.

Err... okay no more ranting, just my 2 cents.
  • carfreak189carfreak189 Member Posts: 31
I did not ask about the the convertible. I just care about the GTP 240 Hp does, will it be in the sedan and when will that engine hit showrooms?
  • tripowergtotripowergto Member Posts: 83
Since it's a HARDTOP convertible does it really matter that much when it's released?
  • bigdaddycoatsbigdaddycoats Member Posts: 1,058
The keyword is CONVERTIBLE. It would make sense for convertible to be released in early spring. I can't see too many people with the top down when it is 30 degrees and snowing.
  • clinenbergerclinenberger Member Posts: 6
does anybody have the g6 gt with the panoramic sunroof? if so, have you had any problems with the roof creaking when driving in and out of inclines, example driveways, parking lots. It sees to be when the body is at a flex. I'm going to take mine to dealer on monday to see if there is a fix.
  • prm1967prm1967 Member Posts: 9
My HVAC duct(s) WERE making a creaking noise when going from being cold to blowing heat, but then staying quiet after the duct(s) got hot (any/all thermal expansion complete). After 4,000 miles and 3 months of break-in, however, this seems to have stopped happening completely. No other problems at all with my GT. :)
  • champchamp Member Posts: 6
I wasn't answering your question, I was just informing everyone about the Convertible. Did you not see that I started a new topic and did not reply to your post? The GTP versions will be here in the summer, but I don't have an exact release date for you.
  • 14871487 Member Posts: 2,407
There are some people in the US who live in warm climates. My guess would be that the convertible will go to warm areas first. Not everyone lives in places with real winters.

I dont know when the GTP will be available but the ordering information is out so it must be soon. The coupe should be out in May according to info I got at the autoshow. The 4 banger will have only 165hp and 161 lb-ft of torque, not 170 as everyone thought.
  • bigdaddycoatsbigdaddycoats Member Posts: 1,058
Yes, I do understand that not everyone lives in a winter climate. However, the largest amount of GM sales are in the midwest and northeast 0 I believe.
  • exalteddragon1exalteddragon1 Member Posts: 729
WHAT! i was sure it was 175!!! don't they know the japanese are going to (uless they already are) make 4 bangers that deliver 200hp!!!!!

Stepping back and looking at the big picture, this car is a big deal for GM. It is a sedan, coup, and hardtop convertable prtraying pontiac's "action" image pretty well. With a 4cyl, 2 v6's and your choice of manual/automatic transmission, it looks like a direct competitor to camcord and altima.

Just wish they would get real with the pricing, and offer nav and XENON. the camry solara is less than 20K BASE, i doubt the g6 will manage that. The should remove all incentives and just take off 2K from the price.

G6 is cool. Just a little bit more GM, common you can do it.
  • bigdaddycoatsbigdaddycoats Member Posts: 1,058
"just take off 2K from the price"

    Great idea.
  • vanman1vanman1 Member Posts: 1,397
Everything I have read said 175hp. 170hp should be the minimum but it's not a deal breaker for me. If you want more power and likely close to the same mileage anyway, get the V6.
  • exalteddragon1exalteddragon1 Member Posts: 729
the 3.5L v6 is amasingly economical.

Will they improve the steering anytime soon???
  • 14871487 Member Posts: 2,407
According to the dealer ordering sheet the engien will have 165hp, not 170. 165 isnt bad because its more than the camry and accord offer in their 4 bangers. IN atddition the '06 GT will have hydraulic steering instead of EPS. The base model wont have cruise control, foglights and a few other things. Its very close to the equipemtn level of the G6 V6 model. The 4 banger will have 161 lb-ft of torque and I would expect it to cost around $19K.

The GTP will have automatic climate control, 18" rims and stability control standard. I dont remember if leather is standard but I think it may be.
  • bigdaddycoatsbigdaddycoats Member Posts: 1,058
I believe that only the GTP models will have hydraulic steering.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Nice summary. I don't think leather is std on GTP and agree with bigdaddycoats about hydraulic steering, at least for 2006 model ;)

I do not currently have a G6, but are planning on purchasing a G6 GT within the next month. I am not sure if I should go with the panoramic sunroof, or opt for the regular one. My dad is a mechanic, and has voiced some concerns about the panoramic roof possibly leaking since it hasn't been around long, and this is the first model year. I have heard several posts reporting a slight noise in the panoramic roof, and was wondering if anyone else has heard of any other problems associated with the panoramic roof? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
My G6 doesn't have Panoramic roof but wind noise is the only complaint I have read about as well.

If you are interested in Factory XM you can't get it with Panoramic roof for the 2005 model year but you can get both options when the 2006 model comes out because XM system has a different antenna.
  • dan165dan165 Member Posts: 653
165 hp is what the 2.4L will have from what I have read on other sites. Pretty good, better than many V6s just a few years ago.

I wouldn't expect the same performance numbers or MPG out of the Pontiac 2.4 vs. the Japanese 4 cylinders. Usually they can do more with less.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
As I've suggested to you in other places, the conversation you want to generate with this link belongs on our News & Views board. Thanks.
  • 14871487 Member Posts: 2,407
You all were correct about the EPS for the GT. I misread the info apparently. I think the GTP should come with more equipment standard but it seems to only have performance hardware standard. I am interested in knowing how much better the mileage will be on the four than the 3.5L V6. On the Malibu the difference in mileage is actually small. I remember reading that the highway mileage on the GTP will be 24mpg and I hope that is wrong.
  • vanman1vanman1 Member Posts: 1,397
The Ecotec gets very decent mileage given it's HP rating. I would expect the 2.4L to be only very slightly worse for the extra 20 ponies. Keep in mind, the 2.4L will have VVT.
  • chrisducatichrisducati Member Posts: 394
The panoramic roof is not new technology. GM got this roof from it's connection with Fiat of Italy. They have had this roof on there Stilo model for a few years before it was adapted to the G6

HI ,THINKING ABOUT BUYING THIS CAR.WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE STEERING? THANKS.
  • hammen2hammen2 Member Posts: 1,284
The car, like the Saturn Ion and VUE and Chevy Malibu and Equinox (among others), uses electric, rather than hydraulic, steering. The resultant steering "feel" doesn't seem right if you're used to the conventional hydraulic steering feel. Test-drive the car and see for yourself if it bothers you.

  • vanman1vanman1 Member Posts: 1,397
I have read that the newer electric systems have better calibration and hence have much better feel. I drove a Malibu and didn't even notice aside from when I was driving at very low speeds.

Yesterday I saw a G6 with wheel covers. Is the 4-cylinder out now or was it probably just a base V6. Don't the V6 models come standard with alloy wheels?
  • montanafanmontanafan Member Posts: 945
I actually like the way our G6 steering feels. I like the easy of turning, especially when cranking on the wheel for driveway manuvers when it cold. And have found no problems with it at highway speed. I am a one handed (actually a few fingers) steering wheel person, so it works with my style. As said give it a test drive.
  • vanman1vanman1 Member Posts: 1,397
jcat : Base G6 has wheel covers. Most have alloys but some people want base when they buy.

montanafan : I drive an Intrigue and it's variable assist steering has a similar feel. I like it also.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
4 cylinder G6 is not out yet.

For the initial 2005 model year there are 4 different wheels - 2 for each model

    G6 6-Cylinder Standard Wheel Cover (QC1) 16" steel, with bolt-on wheel covers

    G6 6-Cylinder Optional Wheel (PF9) 16" cast aluminum, painted

GT Standard Wheel (PFF) 17" cast aluminum, painted

GT Optional Wheel (PFE) 17" cast aluminum, Chrome Tech

For the 2006 model year I know the GTP adds 18 inch wheels. I don't know if more than 1 type or not but I think that there are 2 different types of 18 inch tire that will be available. Not sure if the 4 cylinder adds any lower level wheel than already available.

Has anyone noticed the info button in the DIC stays in and becomes inoperable for short periods of time and then releases and becomes operable. There is no message or explanation. 2005 G6 GT.
  • clinenbergerclinenberger Member Posts: 6
I have the G6 GT with the panoramic sunroof. Mine has alot of noises. If you keep the radio on you can drown them out! There is also a creaking noise that comes from the roof when going up driveways, parking lots, over railroad tracks. Tood to dealership to fix, but only made it worse! Sorry to report this news, but I would have liked to know before I purchase mine, this is a $1500 option! Kinda expensive.
  • avs007avs007 Member Posts: 100
165hp is better than which V6s ? Even the old 3.1 was 175 hp for at least the last 5-8 years. Honda V6 was 200 hp since 98, Toyota V6 was 188 hp back in 1990, Nissan V6 was 192 hp in 1990. I believe the old Honda 2.7 V6 used in the early 90's was 172 hp.

Just took delivery of a G6 (non-GT). It's a company car so I did not add too many out of pocket cost options. First, I highly recommend the light taupe / neutral interior over the black. I could not find one on the lot before I ordered but took a chance. It gives you a nice two-tone beige and black color scheme with some fake walnut trim around the shift and by the door handles. There are NO pictures of this interior anywhere other than a very small pic showing the same scheme in leather in the brochure. It's only available with red, white, and the little known granite color which is what I got. The dealer, the internet sites, and the brochure do not indicate the granite exterior is compatible with the taupe interior but the 1-800 pontiac # confirmed it before I ordered.
I added the std sunroof and ABS. I opted for the base wheel covers since the out of pocket cost was getting up there. Tire size is the same and in my opinion they look equal to or better than the alloys which are very "open" allowing you to see a lot of disc brake. Not knocking the alloys but I just couldn't justify them. Wheel covers are not bad and look more "substantial". Don't hesitate to get them if cost is an issue. Again, you won't find ANY pics of these on the car in brochures or internet.
Initial impressions are; 1) std sunroof noise a bit louder than the Stratus I'm used to, crack the 2 back windows to get a better air pressure balance and it's better 2) a bit more tire noise than I expected but not terrible - Uniroyals were never real good tires 3) seats seem low and since I did not get the power seat option, can't adjust height - just have to grow 4) build quality seems good especially interior. More comments as the miles add up.

Today my dad started the new car buying process. We went to a dealer to look at the Buick Lacrosse it just was to un-sporty. We then looked at the Grand Prix and G6. I see why the Grand prix has the horrible reviews it sucked even the 260 HP GTP with comp group. the G6 GT on the other hand was very good. It was fast great handling and the panoramic roof was sweet so was the stereo. Then again, my dad has driven a Malibu for the past 5 years so almost anything is an improvement. Next saturday we will again test the G6 GT along with the Mazda 6 s, and the suburu Legacy GT. Then we will see if the G6 is really as good as we now think it is.
