    mtnmike,
Without boring everyone, I should say that I have known and have done sublet used-car work for (I used to own my own body shop till 2 years ago)the G.M. at the Ford dealership I ordered my S/C from on(8/17)so I wasn't ordering it from a stranger. When he was filling my order on his computer he was showing me his screen, option by option, and it DID list the chestnut w/gold two tone option. However, the next day he called and asked me to stop in because I would have to pick another color combo. When I was there, he showed me the Dealer Order Receipt Acknowledgment and it showed "Chestnut Metallic N/A".That is when he informed me that he had called and checked on color availability so he could tell me exactly what I could choose from and was told that the Chestnut, and Amazon Green had been cancelled. The only colors for the S/C to pick from were: Arizona Beige, Bright Red, Toreador Red,(but not Dark Toreador Red or Laser Red, both of which I really like), Deep Wedgewood Blue, Island Blue, Black, Silver, and White, the only colors available for the two-tone second color were: Deep Wedgewood Blue, Silver. I find it hard to believe that he would purposely mislead me on this; since I'm ordering my truck and not buying one "off the lot". Why would he care what color he was ordering? I just wish Ford would get their act together and get some accurate information out to the masses.

    starrog,
I ordered the keyless entry option and my dealer told me it was now included as std. eqpt. and wasn't an add'l. cost option. I hope this isn't some type of mis-information also!

I think you are right on with the color information. However my truck was built the week of 08/22/00 in Deep Wedgewood Metallic Blue with Arizona Metallic Beige as the secondary two tone color. So you are right with regards to paint. Ford does not have its act together. Had my dealer check the invoice which they received earlier this week and that is the color scheme produce for this order from June. If it arrives in any other color I will be more than a little upset.

Can anyone tell me how much I might have to pay for a crew cab 150? can anyone tell me what they paid, tax and all? Thanks Al email bandy@ellijay.com

    Afuller1,

You might want to read back through the posts on this board. The majority of people, and I mean allot, have gotten their S-Crews for near invoice. Anything form $200.00 below invoice to $500 over invoice. I personally ordered mine for invoice price saving just a little over $4,000 from the MSRP. Generally you will receive a better price shopping your local dealers who have an Internet Sales Site for their dealership. The best pricing usually is seen by ordering the truck rather than purchasing it off the lot. Still if you purchse it off the lot you should be paying no more than 2% over Invoice. Arm yourself with the Invoice Price by obtaining it in advance from Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book Internet sites. That way you can shop for your best deal. Understand this a dealer who sells you a truck for at or near invoice is still making good money on the deal. So if you hear "I am not making any money on this" remind them of their 3% "holdback" profit. If they are a "Blue Oval" dealer they will be receiving an additional 1.25% "holdback" for S-Crew sales made after 09/01/00. There are also other incentive offers paid to the dealeship depending on their size. So they are definetly making money selling at invoice. There is also very little time or cost to the dealer if you order your truck. Basically in the front door and out the back with maximized profit the sale. Anyway take the time to go through the previous posts (including archived) on this site concerning pricing.

    Good Luck

Well, out of the four of us, I think mine ended up being last. The VOPC originally note "shipped via rail" as of 8/8. However, my truck just got in Wednesday pm 8/23. Friday, I rushed anxiouly down to the dealership (about 1.5 hours away)to make before they closed at 6 pm. Unfortunately, I was a little to anxious, to the tune of 4 points and $100. Not the best way to start my truck trip. But after driving home, I must say, it has been worth the wait. The Arizona Beige is really a lot sharper than the Harvest Gold I ordered. I will still say that Ford equipped the 4x2 Lariat with "pimp" wheels but that was the only choice I had and the only think I might change if available. Happy truckin' to the rest of you.

Lariat 4x2, 4.6L, tow pkg, captain's chairs, LS rear end, and one very, very excited owner.

Where did you get the $200 under invoice? My checkbook is finally fat enough to buy.
    Thanks

Mike---I cant thank you enough. In just a few short paragraphs you gave me a world of knowledge. It has been ten years since buying a truck or car, and without your help I would have made A big mistake today. The dealer told me he had people lined up to pay retail price for all of his 150 crew cabs, and that i might want to consider somthing else.I will take my time now and consider your advise. Thanks so much Al

    Al,

You are welcome and good luck. Armed with a little bit of knowledge and you'll save allot of money. Take your time and shop around. Let them make their unreasonable profits off the average buyer.

What part of the country are you in? I have a couple of names in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that might be able to provide a really good deal for you....

I have been reading these post for the past few weeks trying to decide if the S-Crew was what I really wanted. I just wanted you guys to know that you have really helped me make my decision. You have also helped me know how to buy a S-CREW without getting screwed. I will more than likely go through the Fleet managers of different dealers in my area and negotiate for my price. Has anyone had success with any dealers in the Dallas Ft. Worth area? Either buying off the lot or ordering would be fine with me as long as the price is right. Thanks again for your help.

Technically I think I come in last elliottdj! I picked mine up early Saturday morning in Huntsville TX for those of you looking in the Dallas area. If you can't find anyone that will deal at or close ($250) to invoice, call Chris Davis at Hillcrest Ford. The cleanest, quickest, most efficient car purchase I have ever had the pleasure of transacting. At about 200 miles so far and nothing but smiles all around.

Mine: Bright Red Lariat 4X2, 4.6L, LS, Capt Chairs, Trlr Pkg, sliding window.

BTW, that last item, the sliding window was a strategic move. The kids are loving that!

    May everyone enjoy as much!!

I am being told by a nearby dealer that the 150 SuperCrews are too hot to deal--everyone's paying MSRP! Anyone know of any dealers that are dealing close to invoice in Southern Calif. area?
  • runner21runner21 Member Posts: 28
You can save thousands off MSRP just by shopping around. I am not sure about So. Cal. but, youcould even save some by traveling a little bit. I am not sure if that is an option for you but worth checking into. If you scroll back there is a lot of information that will help you, it sure helped me save about three grand off MSRP. If a dealer told you that everyone's paying MSRP-He might be talking about everyone that is buying from him.

I read your post about 11:30 PM. I could hardly sleep last night. My truck buying story could be written as a short novel. It started about 2 years ago but I think it will end soon, in Tenn.
    Thanks again.

I am glad that was some help to you.
I know what you mean about a truck buying story. We started looking when Nissan came out with their 4 door, then checked out Dakota. When we heard Ford was coming out with the S-crew we decided to wait. Sure glad we did!! Went and signed the papers yesterday. Ford rep was there the day we faxed in the order so Randy told us it is already ordered. Due in 6-8 weeks from the 23rd. We'll post when it gets here.

We did not get the stock black cab steps. The hubby said they look like they would just be mud troughs. He wants to get some after market ones. Can I get some input on what y'all have bought? Thanks.
  • runner21runner21 Member Posts: 28
There are all kinds of aftermarket types of nerf bars you can buy. I bought a set of Westins that are chrome, and installed them myself, (place I bought from wanted $40 to have them install them). I think that Smitty Built makes set off side bars that are pretty good. However, just look around there are all kinds of aftermarket products available, and you will be able to get a good set for a reasonable price. I think that Ford does make some of their own aftermarket products but you might have to go through the dealership to get them.

Have any of you purchased an extended warranty - if so, what did you pay and what do you recommend? I've poured so much $$$$ into my '94 Jeep GC that I really regret not getting an extended warranty. My S-Crew is scheduled to be built the week of 9/4 and I am anxiously waiting! Thank you so much for all your posts about the plant closings - it's good to know KC was not affected - football season is fast approaching and I have a lot of tailgating to do!

Well finally my brand spanking new 2001 F-150 Super Crew Cab in Deep Metallic Wedgwood Blue with Lower Tu-Tone Arizona Metallic Beige, 5.4L, and a bunch of other goodies arrived today. Sharo as a tack and about as pretty as they get. Ordered on 06/22, built on 08/22; shipped on 08/24; and picked up on 08/29. WOW!!! is this thing everything I expected and more. What a pleasure to drive. Words cannot describe the "feel behind the wheel". This baby was turning heads all the way home. Runs like a top and smooth as a baby'e bottom. It was well worth the wait. For those asking about pricing I saved $4200 off MSRP (paid invoice in Denver). I'll be checking in regularily and still contributing to this site. Later as I have to try to get to sleep with a new S-Crew dancing in my head.

Believe it or not but one of the things that I recalled as a plus on the truck I drove was the passenger side air bag on/off switch. I have kids and that was a plus. But go figure, it is missing from the truck I got. What have others found? Or did they discontinue it and I missed that?
  • bwtbwt Member Posts: 24
Congratulations! So the wait was worth it. Hey y'all do you think he likes his truck? Hope you enjoy miles of smiles!!
  • mtnmikemtnmike Member Posts: 100
    Tomps57,

No Passenger air bag deactivation switch allowed by law! Apparently because the S-Crew is a 4 door with a full size backseat it does not meet Federal Standards for front seat passenger airbag deactivation. That feature is standard for trucks and other vehicles with no rear seat or limited rear seat sizing IE Super-Cab or extended cab etc. Federal Standards expect you to seat little people in the rear seating area of any vehicle. When vehicle style prohibits this then the Federal Standard allows for a deactivation switch to be installed. At least that is the way it was explained to me.

  • tomps57tomps57 Member Posts: 24
You are right. The dealer called 5 minutes after I posted and said no switch in the larger cabs as there is adequate room in the back for the little ones. I must've been dreaming as I never thought I sat in anything but the S-Crew.

And sorry for the oversight, congrats to you also! You too seem to be quite happy, as most all of us sound! As bwt says.....miles of smiles to all!

    BTW and Tomps57,

Thanks the truck is really great. BTW you will not be disappointed. Sat down and figred out the time from order to delivery for me was 9 weeks and that includeda 3 to 4 week delay because of retooling to Super Duty's at the KC plant. So things should move quickly for you.

Hey you all! I'm beginning to get a complex - no one ever answers my posts!! Don't you like us Hawaii people? Anyway, I really would like to know if anyone has purchased an extended warranty and what it cost. My S Crew is being built 9/4 so I'm really getting excited. The dealer expects it by the 14th and the slow boat to Oahu will get it here about ten days later! I ordered the Lariat with captains chairs and only 2WD as a 4X4 is useless on Oahu - nowhere to offroad. Got the sliding rear window, cargo cage and CD changer - just can't wait. I wish I was already driving mine the way some of the rest of you are!

Are you talking about the maintainence contract which Ford offers or extending the normal 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty?

    Mtn Mike
  • hulagirlhulagirl Member Posts: 39
Yep - I'm looking at extending to 6/75000 miles, because I think most problems begin showing themselves after 50,000 miles. I've put over $3,000 into my Jeep GC the past three months and don't want to repeat that experience! Thanks for the reply!!! :-) I checked VOPC this morning and I'm still on schedule to be built in a couple of days. They're going to put it on the train to Washington for shipping to Hawaii, so it will take a little while longer for me to see mine than you had to wait for yours.

I really have no experience or knowledge with respect to extended new car warranties. My 1st consideration would be at cost versus proabale expense vs number of years I decided to keep the vehicle. You might want to research this on the Internet I you get no answers here.

  • tallmantallman Member Posts: 21
I have never thought they were worth it. I have always had good luckout them. Not to say that I have not had expenses (more about that later), it's just how I see it. Several reasons for it:

    1. I have a friend who works for a major appliance/electronics company who once told me that when they sell an extended warranty for an item, 90% of the price goes immediatley to profit and the other 10% is allocated to future expense! I don't know how true that is, but it made me think.

    2. I have always wondered, why is it that the bean counter who processes the paperwork is the one who tries to sell you the extended warranty? Almost like it is an afterthought. It is thrown in there with all those other worthless items (like life insurance to cover your loan?!?!)

Having said all that, I just spent almost $1,500 on my 92 Ranger when I was less than 2 months from pulling the trigger on a SuperCrew. Needless to say, I am going to drive the Ranger a while longer to try and justify the cost. Still, I am glad I did not get the ext. Warranty - the ranger has 108K on it.
  • mtnmikemtnmike Member Posts: 100
After 210 miles I couldn't resist filling the tank for a quick mileage check. 16.2 mpg on the 5.4L 50 highway miles 150 city miles. Remains to be seen where it settles at after a 1000 miles. Couldn't be happier.

  • hulagirlhulagirl Member Posts: 39
Cat36 and Tallman - I appreciate your input - I've felt a little like like the extended warranty can tend to be a rip-off, but it is like any insurance - you're really happy to have it if it's needed! The jury is still out, but I'm thinking it might be a good investment....

VOPC has my truck being built now!!! Hope it gets on the train this week.

Mike, I likewise was dying to know mileage, so after about 300 miles my result was 16.5. That is roughly 60% highway and 100% heavy a/c usage as external temps down here in Houston have been running 97+ for weeks. Still turning heads......
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Everyone I've talked to, mechanics, independent shop owners, finance manager's at a couple of dealerships all agree that the extended warranty is a money maker for whoever is selling it. Unless your vehicle is totally unreliable, don't buy it. Also, you don't have to buy it now. You can always buy it later cause it doesn't take effect until the factory one runs out. Good luck on whatever you decide...BTW, did you order your truck through Cutter or Honolulu Ford?
  • elliottdjelliottdj Member Posts: 12
I think I must have messed up by getting the 4.6L. My mileage has been poorer than Mike's and tomps57's who I think both have the 5.4L. With close to 900 miles, I have only gotten 13.6 mpg. I do have the LS rear end which may be a bad choice in hindsight. And I have been using the A/C pretty heavily as it is hot and sticky in South Carolina. However, I have been fairly disappointed since most of this mileage has been highway mileage. Otherwise the truck is sheer joy. Part of my reasoning for using the A/C is that, unlike my old Ranger, turning the A/C in my new Screw not have an immediate speed break effect. The power is certainly a nice improvement. Hopefully, my mileage will increase as the engine breaks in a little more.
  • mtnmikemtnmike Member Posts: 100
    Elliotdj,

I am told it take up to 1000 to 1500 miles for the true gas mileage results to settle in. The computer finally gets to know you pretty well by then I guess. You know that driving habits can vary mileage on any vehicle by at least ten percent. So who knows. It is interesting to note that Tomps57 and I both are real close on our results. I'll post my next results when I fill up again.

  • tomps57tomps57 Member Posts: 24
    Elliottdj,
Just to clarify, I have the 4.6 also. And as Mtn Mike mentions all the vagaries on how we each drive our trucks will dictate the mileage. I figured that the a/c usage was what knocked mine down a bit as my miles ratio (city/highway) was close to Mike's. But I am also driving 70-80mph at times. I still don't expect anything dramatic over the 5.4. My decision was made on the $ involved (the extra 800) and that I just didn't feel I needed the extra juice.

On a different topic, anyone (strongly) recommend one aftermarket brand/outlet over another for products like cab steps? Or would you guys go back to Ford?
  • hulagirlhulagirl Member Posts: 39
Thanks for the input! I've been told the extended warranty will cost much more later. The only reason I'm even considering is that I've owned the Jeep GC from repair hell! I didn't go to Cutter or Honolulu Ford - or even Mike McKenna as none of them would back off full MSRP. I ordered through the internet dept. at Scarff Motors in Auburn, WA. They will deliver to the dock in Tacoma for me - no charge. Even with the $800 shipping fee, I'm saving a bundle over the best deal here. Too bad, one of those dealers in Hawaii could have had a sale.

For several days, the VOPC has been saying that my order is in a temporary production delay. What's up with that? I'd like to know if anyone else is delayed. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me why ford offers only parchment with their new color "chestnut". I would order a F150 today if they would put dark graphite in the chestnut color. I think this must be a marketing error. I E-mail ford and the answer was, this has to be changed at the executive level with market data, customer demand, and dealer input. I have ask several dealers to find out why just one interior, but have not got much input to ford from any dealer. They just say we doubt if the will change. I think they are afraid to call whoever the need to call to ask for the added interior dark graphite.

I had the same experience with VOPC so I had my wife call the dealer(I'm in Kosovo until Oct.)The dealer said that I couldn't get any info because my truck now has a VIN number. He says it should be ready for pickup at the end of next week or the begining of the following week. Just wanted to tell all that I really appreciate all the great info you have provided. Oh yeah, forgot to say 2wd,lariat,ls,5.4,green w/two-tone,sliding rw&cage. Can't tell you how excited I am to see it and am so jealous of you who have one already. Also, 400 over invoice in tenn.
    hope this helps.

should read "You've "got" my curiosity for "future" purchases".
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
You've go my curiosity for futre purchases. You mentioned that you purchased through Scarff Motors in Auburn, WA and that they will deliver to the dock for you. How is the rest of the shipping being handled? How much of a hassle was it? Do you have any concerns on whether any of the Ford dealerships in town would give you a hard time with warranty concerns? The reason for my last question is that Cutter Chevrolet's service department is getting swamped reason being JN Chevrolet has stopped accepting warranty work for vehicles not bought from them. Don't know what GM's reaction is going to be towards JN Chevrolet but in the interim, it's causing a problem for a lot of owners, moreso that JN's location is near the military bases and housing.
  • hulagirlhulagirl Member Posts: 39
Are you in Hawaii, too??? I haven't been concerned about warranty work because I didn't think that Ford would allow anyone to refuse service. The only thing the dealers here have said is that they won't give me a courtesy rental during repair - but they don't give that to everyone anyway! There are three to choose from and I've asked for information from Ford regarding complaints or dissatisfaction with any of the service departments. As for JN - that's Joe Nicolai and he is a wheeler-dealer type of guy who has been involved with high profile real estate deals and from what I've read about him in the paper over the years - it doesn't surprise me that he's pulling something like this. GM might choose to yank his franchise - but he's just the kind of guy that would dare them to do it. As for Scarff Ford, I actually emailed approximately 20 Ford dealerships, but one of the reasons that I went with Scarff was that the guy, Jerry Thurman, was very responsive and also, my son is going to college in WA and we bought him a used car there last year and had a good experience. I know I didn't get the best deal out there, but for the west coast and what I wanted 4X2 Lariat with captain's chairs, was just too hard to find. They all have 4X4's and no reason to have one on Oahu. I am paying 3% over invoice - and that is invoice on the options, too. No extra charges, just straight invoice + 3%. None of the CA dealers would give me that deal. Scarff has an account with SeaLand (I think that's the shipping co.) and they're just going to package the whole deal and I'm financing through my credit union. All accomplished via email and fax and a couple of calls at their expense. No hassle at all, so far. I've also asked for a hard tonneau cover - locking and color matched - and a drop-in bedliner, that Jerry is going to have taken care of before shipping.

I got the word from VOPC that my truck was completed 9/6 YAAAYYY!!! But that the delivery date is 9/25 - I just don't understand why such a long time for delivery - then after the bedliner and tonneau are added - another seven days on the ship! Anyway, shipping is $800 so I still saved a couple grand compared to buying it here AND I'm getting the exact truck I want without playing those salesman games. I bought my Jeep GC in Portland, OR 6 years ago and shipped it here - $600 to ship back then! Saved a ton of money on that one as the local dealer mark-up at the time was $6,000!!! They do love to try and rip us off!

I hope this long, long message answers any of your questions - if not - ask some more! Aloha hulagirl
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
thanks for the response. So Scarff is shipping the truck through Sealand and the total for shipping was $800? Once arrived in Honolulu, what happens next? I'm assuming someone needs to pick it up, clean it, check the fluid levels, check for any damages and such.

I had a bad deal happen with JN and am very familiar with their tactics. If you ever drive by on Nimitz Hwy., you'll notice their salesmen out waving like politicians. I had cancelled a deal once and placed a stop payment on a deposit check to be sure. Sure enough, not 10 minutes later BoH calls me to tell me that someone had tried to deposit the check...

I have acquired two vehicles within the last year. A '00 Silverado and a '00 Denali. I paid way too much for both of them and always looking for options. As for a rental car, all the local dealerships use Enterprise rent a car. Because of warranty issues on both of my vehicles, I have rented a total to 22 times within the last 10 months, a couple of times, both vehicles were in the shop at the same time leaving me with two rentals.... Because of this, I've learned that Ford, GM, and other manufacturers will pay for the rental. This item is billed back to the manufacturer and you should be able to get one since the local dealer isn't paying for it. Of course the dealer could give you a hard time and a phone call to Ford customer service should have that straightened out in no time. The qualification for the loaner is that the dealer will be keeping your vehicle for longer than a 24 hour period for warranty work. You could always double check with Ford customer service.

Good luck on your new truck...I'll bet you're having a hard time waiting for it to be delivered.
  • hulagirlhulagirl Member Posts: 39
Thanks for the info. It is my understanding that Scarff is going to detail the truck and prep it as if I was picking it up there before putting it on the ship for me. I will be picking it up myself. One thing I found through all of this is that no dealership here will accept a "drop ship" which is the way you can purchase through another dealer or broker and have it sent here directly - under the destination charge. Because they are independent franchises - they can just refuse to accept a drop ship. That's how they hold a captive audience and have that bogus dealer mark up on everything. I just absolutely refuse to pay it and even have told the owners of the dealerships I'll go to the mainland and they tell me to go ahead. They don't care since they have so many people here who haven't done their homework - or who don't realize that $800 to ship is way less than paying full MSRP plus dealer mark up. Sorry to hear you haven't had a better experience.

I'm trying to put my truck out of my mind for now. Of course I wish I were driving it NOW, but at least I know it's built and getting on the train!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
thanks for the info. I will definitely look into this on my next purchase.

If you purchased an extended warranty at the time of your factory warrantys expiration, I understand that the difference may be only $100 -$200 and in some cases, no difference in prices. Have you checked out

    Is this a production vehicle?
If so, where can I find more info on it?

It looks a lot like mine-black over gold lariat 4x4. I like those tires-the "all-terrain" tires Ford uses "Wrangler RTS" are not a true all-terrain tire-you can verify this on goodyear's web site-they are a hybrid between an AT and an all-season. The real AT Tire is the Goodyear's Wrangler ATS. Have had my screw since Feb-very happy with it.
