The Duratech block is Aluminum but has cast iron cylinder liners like all other modern Aluminum engines. There are still a some engines that have cast Iron blocks but they tend to be heavier.

Not to change the subject bit does anyone know of the Corvette LS6 engine is Iron or Alumimum? Just curious.

Has anyone noticed how the sport package black interior plastic panels are scraped and scratched easily? If anyone has been experiencing this problem and have been able to fix it ,some feedback would be great! By the way Im almost 100% positive that the Corvette's engine its Iron.

I checked the transmission oil level thinking that it might be too low or high and it was within the cold-temp range after I warmed it up for about 2 mins in the morning. I didn't notice the hiccup yesterday after leaving work (parked about 5 hours from lunchtime), and this morning it didn't happen either. I accelerated very gently to try to see exactly at what RPM it does it, but it shifted smoothly to my surprise. I'll keep an eye on this and see if I can notice any patterns. I thought it had to do with putting the car in reverse first then drive. It's hard to troubleshoot a sporatic event like this. I just don't like it when the transmission jerks like that, even if it's just once a day. It probably puts enough wear on it to go out right after the warranty expires.

Kmauer, I'm surprised the service guy could just grab another 6i AT from the lot and demonstrate it to you right there. It would've had to been one that was parked for a while, since this problem doesn't happen when the car has been driven that day.

I wouldn't call this a hiccup at all, it's just normal operation. Remember that the transmission must "break in" just like the engine. All of the gears and clutches within the tranny must create their "sweet spots", if you will. Just drive it like normal, let loose, and have fun. I wouldn't get too worked up over it.

    dondilo,
I have noticed the exact same thing. I'm very anal about my car and the first time I cleaned the interior I used a cloth with some 409 on the center console-I actually thought that it was metal. When I was done there appeared to be a black hair next to the shift lever. Hmmmm, spray it again and rub a bit more. Now there's two "black hairs". I got the message this time. I am now using a california dash duster, and nothing else on those plastic parts. It's one of those wax impregnated dusters you can get at any auto supply store. So far I have no more scratches, but the two I do have really bother me. The only way I would know to get rid of them would be to replace the part. Any other ideas??

They all leak. Factory moonroofs have drain tubes that run down from each corner. I'm not sure if the aftermarket units have that or not. If they do it could be a matter of a tube being clogged.

Marla, you take your 6 through automated washes? I tried a touchless one once and found it to be near useless. The dirt film was still there and that high pressure water tends to not be so kind on various seals.

    Both engines use Timing Chains.

I have a M6 with the 5spd manual trans., on a recent trip I tried to see what the car would max out on top speed. As I approached 120mph in 5 gear, the car gave a jolt and lost power as if the fuel had been cut off. The problem went away as my speed went down to 110mph. I plan to take the vehical in to the mazda dealer to see if there is a problem with the computer. Anyone else had this problem. Also going back to the post on the transmission whine in 5 gear, I too have the same problem, only between 60 to 65mph.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
That's 192km/h - the car's chip will cut you off around that speed.

Hey, this forum is so great. I have read through the forum and saw that some of the problem I have had, other have experienced the same problems. One I would like to report and to find out if anyone with the same problem has had any results in getting the problem solved.

I bought a new Mazda 6S with the 5 speed auto tranny. I have almost every option on the car but the moonroof and the leather seats. O ahve the value sports apperance package so I ahve the smaller tires and rims. The day I took delivery I was missing a roof molding, and when the prep guys removed the plastic wrap from the interior the fake plastic titanium look plate near the gear shifter had all the painted pulled off when they pulled the plastic off. of corse the dealer said they were sorry and quickly replaced the plate. But the tech then scratched the surrounding plate and that too had to be replaced at a later date. ( seems the fake metal looking plates scratch so easy) From day one the breaks pulsated and the car pulled left very hard, almost to the point of being dangerous to drive at highway speeds. 2 weeks after my purchase I took the car in, both routers were warped and had to be turned. They refuse to order new ones. That problems seems to be fine now. But then the break light came on, seems there is a recall that just came out for the break light coming on. But since day one the car has pulled hard to the left. After 3 visits now I am told alot of bull!!! close to what has been posted in this forum. I am told the car has torque steer, the car was designed that way, the roads I am driving are wavy, wow, every road here in Michigan must be wavy as I cant keep the car tracking straight, never had any other car do this. I am going back for vist 4 to meet with some mazda person that is way up. Thus far I have had 2 allignments, a new tire as the first time one on the left wore real bad with in 2 weeks. Nothing seems to have worked, does anyone else that has had this problem been able to get it solved??? I have had the car 4 weeks now and have 2500 miles on it and cant believe no one can fix this problem. The techs have no clue, they say yep it pulls left real bad but the car is built to do this......LOL ok fine, but why did the tire wear out already on that side? Need help please advise. Every time I leave the car they keep if for 2 days or more, at this point I am getting close to qualifying for our states Lemon Law, only one 2 more visits are needed or if they kpee my car for more then 4 days in the next 2 weeks I may be able to get a new one..........just looking for any suggestions. I notice others on here have the same problem with this car, funny I test drove another mazda at the same dealer and that car did the same thing. SO he put in another one and that car did just fine, but that car was the Mazda 6 with the 17 inch rims, that car drove just fine. Could the rims cause this?

I just finished my first tank of gas on a new 6S AT and only got 14/15 MPG. For a combo of city and highway it should be around 22/23 MPG, according to the official Madza stats. The dealer says it takes a while for the engine to break in to get maximum fuel efficiency -- could this be true? Has anyone had a similar prob?

The aluminum block (& I believe heads) were developed for Ford by Hitachi. Ford has gone this route previously with the 1993 Probe GT and Madza MX6 V6 as well as SHO Tauruses.
  • bullmooseybullmoosey Member Posts: 18
Sorry. I meant to say YAMAHA (not "Hitachi") worked with Ford on the V6engine development
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Hitachi - don't they make TVs or something? ;)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Since this is NOT a problem with the car, please ask this question in the regular sedan board.

Too many people just look at the post count here and trash the Mazda6 without reading the posts.

    Thanks!

Yeah - I'd rather take it thru a touchless than the kind with all the swirling rags and stuff. Don't want other people's dirt and sand that's stuck in those rags getting ground onto my new car. I've been pretty pleased with the touchless - this was the first time I've used one. I always just took my old car thru the regular kind 'cause I wasn't so obsessive with it. ;-) But with my 6 the touchless has done a really good job for me. Granted, my car hasn't been really super-filthy or anything. But you know how cars get streaky and dirty mostly along the bottom half when the road is wet from a recent rain? That's the level of dirtiness I've allowed my 6 to reach so far. That'll change come winter, I'm sure, though. :-(
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Ya, the MI winters are a bit of a problem for keeping the car clean (I lived in WI for 30 years). You have the rear splash guards, yes?
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
No - I don't have the mud guards 'cause my car has the Sport Package, and the mud guards were not available if you had the sport package.
My husband is convinced you could still put mudguards on, though - just haven't figured out how.

I have barely driven my Mazda 6i for 2700 miles and my dash already seems to be rattling! this is very annoying as this should not be happenning in a new car. The other thing is that my 'check engine' light has come on. The dealer says not to worry about it as it resets itself.....but how can I not worry about it????!!! I am going to write a stinker to Mazda. If anyone out there has faced the same problems of rattling and the check engine light pls email me on dxp239@psu.edu
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Lots of people have had their CEL come on. Most of them seem to have stemmed from not tightening the gas cap correctly. I had mine come on a couple weeks ago and took it in, and the code was NOT the gas cap code. My car is at the dealer right now having the Evaporation Pump/Cannister replaced. I also have the 6i, and automatic. Is yours automatic or manual? When was yours built?

I would definitely have the dealer check it to make SURE what it is. It might only be the gas cap dealie, but it might be something else, too. There's no way to tell until it's checked.

I got it too....I discerned the source to be from the roofliner where the drivers side sunvisor is and the moonroof edge meets.
I press it and the noise went away.
I take my hand off and the noise is back.
Utlimately, I banged my fist on that part of the roofliner, albeit gently, and the noise is gone, at least for the one 7 mile drive I took it out for.

lets see if it comes back.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
The door trim panel on my front-passenger door (of my Protege) wasn't snapped completely in, resulting in rattling noise. Pressing them in did the trick. They either didn't press it in all the way at the plant, or it shook loose during transport.

Needless to say, one shouldn't slam everything that rattles in the car. :)
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
and the geiger counter noise /* hold your breath */ did not come back.

    yipeeee.

Chow, I am a mech engr. So hammering as a solution comes naturally to me :)

I also have a problem with wiper chatter(see post #172)when it rains the wipers jump and leave lines of water?I've cleaned the windshield and ran the the wipers dry and they work fine?
    I applied rain-x with no results,any suggestions.

att:thlarock-do your wipers work on a clean dry
        windshield?
If your fuse panel cover has fallen off, what did the dealer do to fix it or did they just put it back on?
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
clean the windshield. remove any wax or any such coating. Also clean the wiper rubber. Use windex.

Fuse panel: mine came off as I was driving home after taking delivery. Next day, I bent over and saw that the panel cover is actually a complex fitting piece. there are 4 tabs that need to be aligned and each fit at right angles. It took me 30 minutes to figure out, but once done and fixed, it has not come off after 4 days and 400 miles.

I have a ME background too. I was taught a "judicious application of force" can sometimes do wonders. :)

"judicious application of force" ..i like that

We were working on Ford Pinto MT mechanisms at the time, and the one my group was disassembling was sticking a bit. He pretty much took a ball-peen hammer to it. :)

Yes, a few of us have had the same problem. Not to the same extent, but some version. After having my car aligned and all that stuff, I finally got through to the head warranty guy (I live in Seattle)who said he may have a fix. Because of the cars suspension, the normal equipment that is adjusted to fix alignment is not there so you can have it aligned all you want with no help. Finally I took my car in and they "loosened all the suspension parts and then tightened them." Well this obviously is part of the problem because my car now pulls to the right like it use to pull left. Basically the problem switched sides. I now have about 4000 miles and was set to have the tweek done again but I decided to wait until I have more miles and the bearings and stuff are better seated. The car is now almost bearable to drive because I spend most of my time in the left lane where the pull now helps. If the road crowns to the right, forget it. I would call around to local dealers to see if anyone in your area has done this, but be sure and keep trying until you get through to someone higher up on the warranty chain than your dealership. Good luck.

makes quite an irritating rattle when open. I think it is from the road vibration. It sounds like glass pane tapping against the metal bracket. Happens at all speeds - Anyone else notice this? btw, it was not a factory installed moonroof.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
    >>> it is not a factory installed moonroof <<< is not a BTW fact. That should be the first thing to me mentioned and since it is not factory installed, u should head back to the installer with the problem. Frankly speaking it is not a Mazda problem.

As regards to whether anyone else experiences this rattle, I will say No. Never heard this complain from any of the mz6 owners over here.
  • 1wiseguy1wiseguy Member Posts: 120
No rattles or creaks and the wind noise is low. Was in a friend's Murano the other day and couldnt believe how loud the wind noise was.
  • mspergermsperger Member Posts: 1
I think I'm having the same problem described in msg 273 by edehate and 274 by zmzmzm. I'm getting metal-on-metal creaking/groaning noises during turns, especially pronounced at low speeds and on hills. Happens more on the right side than the left, usually 1/4 to 1/2 turn off dead center. Dealer has replaced coil spring seats, control arm, and bushing(?) to no avail. Car has been in twice with no help; one more time and it qualifies for lemon law in our state, but I'd rather get the problem fixed. Any ideas?
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I just saw what you described (metal on metal sounds from the steering) on the Maxima Problems board tonight!

Maybe you should check that too!

I own a Mazda 6s with all the options. Sport,Bose, Leather, Comfort Package. My 6 has about 3500 miles. I have had the Check engine light problem but i had it fixed. According to the Mazda techs it was a sensor problem. Now I am hearing a rattle noise right after I turn the ignition off. I want to know if there is anyone out there with the same problem. Thanks
  • glideslopesglideslopes Member Posts: 431
Is the noise a ticking sound that goes on for a couple of minutes, or one rattle that goes away quickly?

    Hello,

I have 1500 Kms. on my M6 and am having a hard time with the factory oil recommendations of 5w-20. After reading every I can find on the subject and combined with my mechanical experience I have decided that my first oil change which I will be doing tomorrow I will be using 5W-30 Synthetic oil with a Motorcraft filter. I would like to here what others are using.

Move this to the normal discussion area for mazda 6 or to the Accessories/Mods or Maintenance fora.

As for the oil, yes, 5W-20 is hard to come by, A lot of 0W-20 oils are made to satisfy the specs (I use mobil 1). A lot of people are of teh view that synthetic is useless, or useless so early in the engine's life, and have moved to 5W-30, at least until winter sets in. Search through posts on some of the above fora, or check on "that other mazda6 discussion forum on the internet" :)

As a matter of fact i caught the noise. It was the fan. I asked some of my co-workers if the fan remains off after I turn off the ignition, and they said it does. But, I asked myself, is it suppose to sound that loud. Are you or anyone having the same problem with the fan.

I own a Mazda 6i with 4800 miles. The driver's side visor no longer stays "up" near the headliner. During the past week, it has been slowly dropping toward the windshield. It's currently about 3 inches below the headliner. Is anyone aware of something that can be tightened or adjusted? I am going to the dealer Monday, but if it's something obvious, I would like to take care of it now.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
on my 6s / MT exactly as described in posts 210(mjvchicago) and 222(sry110).

One thing I have noticed is that I hear it *ONLY* when I baby the clutch, like when moving in a parking lot. If I do a normal fast takeoff from a traffic light, with the engine RPM over 1000 rpm, the noise is not heard.

to me it appears to be a belt slipping due to excess load and presence of barely sufficient power under 1000 rpm.

Can anybody from Mazda confirm or deny the existence of this "squeaky effect"?
  • mjvchicagomjvchicago Member Posts: 149
When you hear that sound, is it really a subtle skritching sound? I've actually been able to hear it without having the clutch in. But it's only in reverse so far.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
i hear it when the clutch is engaged and the engine is shuddering, on the verge of stopping, but barely manages to keep itself alive.

keep in mind, I only hear it if my window is down.

It was actually my wife who heard it when she was standing outside the car and i was trying to park. I couldn't hear it inside the cabin. I did not even have the radio on. so i rolled down the window and presto! i could hear it.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
i went outside and tried to reproduce the screeching sound. I could not.
  • mjvchicagomjvchicago Member Posts: 149
I think I'm experiencing something different than you are. I only hear it when I am just starting off for the first time in the morning pulling out of my garage. It happens when I reverse and either when the clutch is engaged slightly to get the car rolling backward or just when the car starts to roll backward at all. It's only in the AM when the car is cold, and the sound is a barely audible "scritch" that lasts a split second.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
    when u hear the sound?
  • mjvchicagomjvchicago Member Posts: 149
Nope... no accessories are on, windows all closed. Literally the only time I've experienced it is that first shift into reverse to take me out of the garage, letting the clutch out slightly to get the car moving a bit and when the car starts to move. No other time. Weird huh?
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
nope. never heard anything like that on my car.
  • auto_clownauto_clown Member Posts: 10
I also have a 6i with just over 5k miles, and I have the same problem with my drivers side visor. Believe it or not, it is quite annoying, because it is in my peripheral field of vision. I also sometimes bump my head on it when getting in or out of the car. I have tried to fix it, but no luck. Let me know if the dealer is able to fix it. Thanks.
