Toyota of Orlando had one SR5 with leather on the lot. The salesperson said that it was rare that you would see that model with leather.

I am in the process of buying a new 4Runner, but I have been told that I will have to order it. Any experiences with turnaround times for new orders? (SR5, V6, 3rd Row)

I purchased a new Limited V8 2WD last week from Village Toyota in Crystal River, FL. Options include JBL w/ NAV System, XRES and Rear Suspension, Side Curtain Air Bags, Moonroof, Floor Mats, and Daytime Running Lights. Paid 36,913 plus tax, tag, title, etc. Worked out to be about 200 under Edmunds TMV price. Dealership was easy to work with, this was my second Toyota purchased from them.

I would question smells 'Going Away'. I test drove a 4Runner about 3 years ago and noticed a smell. The 4runner I finally purchased new never has had any burning smell.
From what I can tell the first thing to check is the entire wiring harness over the manifold and top of the engine. This all seems to have a grey electrical tape wrapping around it. It could touch the engine in tight places. The tape can and does unravel in places which can touch the engine.......that would stink !
      Just my two bits..

I put in an order mid February for a 2004 4Runner AWD V8 and the dealership anticipates delivery by mid-July but have told me that it may not be until late July.

It is about 4 months. I special ordered SR5 V8
back on Nov 10th.. it arrived on Feb 27th.
I had to special order it because the following
    weren't readily available:
    SR5 and side curtain airbag
    Titanium with taupe interior.

When I test drove it last Friday it odo had a
grant total of 1 mile on it!
One thing not quite mentioned about the new runner
is it feels like a luxury vechicle. It sure does to me.

Btw, I got 500 over invoice.

I think you're doing pretty good. If your numbers are accurate, the dealer is making a profit of about $250.00 plus any holdback and/or other incentives it has with the manufacturer. On my deal with CarMax, dealer profit was about the same or a tad bit more. I would feel good about the deal you consummated.

Hi all, this will be my first post, but I have read and learned lots of information on here. I think I have figured things correctly, but wanted an outside opinion.

I am looking at buying a 2004 Sport 4x4 V8, with the following options...
    Sunroof,
    6 disc changer
    Rear spoiler with lamp
115 volt sc Double Decker cargo
    Electrochromic mirror
    Rear audio controls
    5 piece carpet/cargo mat set
**sport bumper and exhaust tip...this is a toss up, but I am including it.

The quote for the out the door price on the 2 they have is $32000, plus 129.00 processing fee. That's it, no TDA, Dealer Prep, etc.

My other color option(the color I want) they will have to pull off another lot, they are quoting at $32646, plus the 129.00. The extra coming from pulling from another lot.

Do dealers have to pay "extra" to pull from another lot? If I have to wait a week for a truck to go by and pick it up, I am willing to wait the week. But I don't know if I should pay extra.

    Any advice????
    thanks

It would be easier for one of us to give you an opinion on price if you can tell us what the dealer is willing to sell the vehicle to you for and the amount of sales tax or the sales tax percentage (which varies w/the county you live in). You're dealer won't be getting the dealer holdback if he has to get your vehicle from another dealer. The dealer who he is getting your vehicle from would get the holdback. This may be why they are charging you more.
  • cardipemcardipem Member Posts: 2
The dealer is willing to sell the vehicles on their lot for the $32000 plus the $129.00. I was going to try to get the dealer to come down on the other one to about the $32000. The sales tax will be around 1800, but I am not financing that. Only the price of the vehicle, minus my down payment and trade-in. Plus, preapproved thru Capital One, so financing CANNOT fall thru. We haven't even gotten to the trade in price, but they know that I want it done seperately. I am also going to go to a dealership that sells my brand of vehicle and see what they would buy it for.

This is because I walked out about a week ago, because they wouldn't come down from the 33333.00 they had listed in the paper. The salesman *seems* honest, but he also knows we have done some homework. He called Tuesday and said they would come down on the other 2(one is a new arrival, because when I went Sat. they only had one of a color(demo) and now they have 2) & they could do a search to find the color I wanted.

It is hard here because there is only one dealership in town and the others are about 3-4 hours away. I can say this is lower than the quotes I got from the others I have contacted.

I also have information that is coming from Fighting Chance hopefully tomorrow. I am also going to use that to bargain down even further if possible.

    thanks....
  • micksdad1micksdad1 Member Posts: 32
My calculations indicate that invoice for the vehicle you selected is approximately $31,274.00. With this dealership being the only game in town, they probably think you have no choice but to accept their price. They may be able to if there aren't a lot of 4Runners on their lot or their going fast. I would hold off as long as possible and give them the impression that you are willing to travel to another dealership elsewhere even if you have to fly to take delivery or purchase another make and model in town. Finding out whether you can get the vehicle at a dealership 3-4 hours away by e-mailing the dealer or calling plus determining the cost of a 1 way ticket may be worth your while. The more times you leave the dealership, the more they will be calling you. You will also probably get a better deal if you wait until the end of the month when they need to meet their sales quota/goal. Many are buying the 4Runner at invoice or $200-$300 over invoice. I think if you're anywhere within this range or even up to $500 over invoice (based on the dealership's geographic advantage in this case), you're doing pretty good. If they're telling you they're not making a lot of money on this deal, ask them to see their invoice to determine how much they in fact are making.

Where in Missouri are you looking to purchase, I to am interested in the same automobile and have noticed most going for about 1000 over invoice.

I am trying to negotiate it down to 300 over invoice. Let me know if you have any luck.

I was talking to 2 dealers here in Boston yesterday, and they state that they cannot order an SR5 or Sport with the side curtain airbags, have to go with a loaded V8 limited (option price went from $600 to $10000). Anybody else run into limitations about ordering side air curtains, the JBL sound system, or the 115V power outlet?
  • kullenbergkullenberg Member Posts: 283
I have a silver V8 4x4 Sport on order with one option - side air bags, no sunroof, nothing else. Dealer says the system accepted the order, and gave a del. date in early May.
    Cheers

  • boston_kevinboston_kevin Member Posts: 5
Pat - when did you place your order? I talked with Toyota Customer service and they said, "Guess you have to get the Limited..." This is really bad because I can get a 2004 Pathfinder for less money with the side air bags...
  • kullenbergkullenberg Member Posts: 283
My order was put in about a month or 6 weeks ago. It was done by Toyota of Boone, in Boone, NC. Ordering policies may be different here with SE Toyota, who is the distributor.

I also experienced the no side curtain A/Bs on my sport, so it's not all poppycock [can I say that?] I was reading some very interesting ordering experiences at T4R.org
  • boston4rboston4r Member Posts: 7
Kevin, I ordered SR5 with side airbag, silver, taupe interior. As I said before it took about 4 months.
Yes, I understand your frustration.. None but one of the boston area dealer willing to do special order.
Not sure it is proper to provide dealership/salesman contacts on this forum. If you sent me email I'll give you the contact.
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
You may provide the name of the dealership but no contact information including names of salespeople, phone numbers and so on.

That would be Ira Toyota in tewksbury (who special ordered 4Runner).
  • boston_kevinboston_kevin Member Posts: 5
I received email from Ira last night. They are the only ones who will create a special order for me, but some of the other dealers had said if I was willing to forego the airbags, they would sell me a sport or SR5 for invoice...

For those interested in leasing a 4Runner Sport V8 4wd, here are the latest numbers provided by Carman over at the Leasing forum.

Toyota is not providing any sort of lease money factor support on the 2004 4Runner in most of its regions. If this is the case in your area and you were to lease one through Toyota Financial Services, you would have to use its base standard lease money factor of .00220. The 3 year, 15,000 miles per residual value for a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport 4wd V8 should be 61%.

    Jamonrob,

Did the dealer place an order for your 4runner to be built specially for you (i.e. requested factory to build) or are they going to do a dealer locate and find one that closely resembles your option requests? Also, what dealer are you working with? I will be in the market soon for a SR5 and will probably need to special order since they don't equip SR5 models with the side curtain airbag option in Northern California.

Concerning the dealer's offer, it seems reasonable, although I don't know why you would have to pay a marketing fee if you are special ordering (seems like a gimmick that dealers use to extract more money from the buyer). Have you checked the price against some of the online car buying websites?
  • ohtomaohtoma Member Posts: 28
Interested in the SR5 ordered by Boston4r. I plan to look in the same area, however I'm only interested in an SR5 with 3rd row seat and side airbags. Were you able to get invoice price for the SR5 you ordered?
  • boston4rboston4r Member Posts: 7
I also ordered SR5 w/ third row seat, V8, side airbag. None of them were prepared to do special order. One who did agreed for $500 over invoice.
That is what I agreed finally. I did pay TDA ($413), DHB ($613) and WSFR ($306).
Will I do it again for the same deal? Definitly so.
  • ohtomaohtoma Member Posts: 28
Thanks for the heads up -- good to know that they can special order. May have more questions as I get more information from the dealer
  • beanctrbeanctr Member Posts: 99
If this discussion thread is any indication of the demand for side curtain airbags, why doesn't Toyota build the SR5 with them? I hope at some point they analyze the options people are requesting on special orders. I say make this safety feature standard on all 4runner models.
  • aroutharouth Member Posts: 45
I special ordered a Sport V8 AWD with side curtain airbags. I encountered some resistance, but I eventually found a really good salesman. He told me that special orders are a lot of time and effort, so most salesman hate doing them.

Just to give you a heads up I paid invoice. I ordered 31 Oct 03 and it arrived like Feb 12 04. It was a long wait, but to get the side curtain airbags was worth it.
  • slarryslarry Member Posts: 19
It doesn't seem logical that anyone at this point in the year would order a 2004. If arrival date is 4-months from time of order then that means the buyer could expect a delivery date in July. Your 4-R would become a year old in just 2-months. Anyone know when dealers will take orders for 2005 model and when specs are usually available for new models? Maybe side air bags will become a standard feature...if not then at least you would have a new model with probably more standard features than last years model. Price increase should not be a factor due to Toyota's desire to keep it very competitve in the mid-size SUV market place.
  • muddin69muddin69 Member Posts: 2
The leather was a distributor or factory installed option. In my case, the distributor in TX is Gulf States Toyota.

In a non-leather SR5, you can always have leather installed by the dealer or some other place.

After much research on the vehicle and on pricing (much thanks to this forum), I purchased an 04 Sport edition. I purchased at Boulder Toyota, they are great and the transaction was the best I have encountered. No games No screwing around, to the point, one of the fastest car deals experienced, and I have had quite a few. Since I was very specific on what I wanted, I secured price quotes from all the metro area dealers, while Boulder Toyota was not substantially lower, the overall experience was definitely worth the short drive to Boulder. I did not have a trade so the transaction was a little simpler than some. I would DEFINITELY recommend Boulder Toyota.

    Vehicle description and pricing:
4x4 Sport V8, Stratosphere Mica, EC Mirror, NJ GDO homelink, SR sunroof, CM double deck cargo, GY side curtain airbags, RF rear spoiler, EJ 6 disc premium stereo, RL daytime running lights, CF floor mats, WL wheel locks.
    MSRP $35,813,00 Price paid: $32,601.00 + tax
Footnote: Could not get around the inclusion of TDA charge, every dealer quote had this added in when fiquring invoice, which is not included when checking Edmunds.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
We don't include TDA because it's regional and varies from one part of the country to another. How much was yours?

    Congrats on the new 4Runner!

Just signed near Philadelphia for a 2004 Sport V8 with the following options:

    FE - Emissions
    CM - Double decker cargo
DJ - JBL stereo w/o changer
    RF - Rear Spoiler
    SR - Moon Roof
    WL - Wheel Locks
    Z1 - Convenience Package
    WH - Wireless Headphones
    E5 - Exhaust Tip
    32 - Silver Sport Pedals

Total before tax and titles = $30,382.

Traded in a '97 Camry with 54k for $6000, thus knocking down price to be paid for tax. I am going to be a recent college grad and received a $400 rebate by financing through Toyota.

All told, after tax ($1462), fees ($143), rebate(-$400), and trade-in (-$6000) it came to $25,582.

I think it is a pretty good deal.

I did a preference order at Hanlee's in Davis. Had several dealers do a locate for me ... My desires were nothing exotic, but Toyota just doesn't release 4-runners w/ many option "options". Nothing I'd accept could be found. I didn't want to pay for options I didn't want and I wanted some that was not anywhere on a lot or on an allocation. So, I decided to preference order.
Sent out emails to about 10 dealers with my offer. Dealers still are not hip to dealing this way and still tried some dumb things in contacting me. I arrived at my offer after research at carbuyingtips.com, edmunds, and after receiving a price from broker carsdirect.com. Other sites and dealer inventories were also researched. Hanlees was my closet dealer and was a few hundred above my offer but beat all by a good bit, and I had realized I just wasn't going to get it much lower. I'm paying the dealer about 4% profit. according to carbuyingtips.
Before the deal was consummated, estimated delivery time I had from many was 4-6 mos. After agreeing on a price Hanlees told me I should have it in 2-3 mos. I think the 4-6 eta is designed to get you to buy off the lot, on on a locate.
Also, Hanlees agreed should any incentives occur between now and then, I'd get them, and if the invoice/msrp should rise, I am still locked in at the agreed upon price.
I also like the idea of a fresh vehicle, with the plastic just off...I saw some real trashed new ones on the lot when researching to decide color scheme. This industry still has some growing up to do. Sorry this is so long.

    Hi all,

Here's the deal I got from the fleet/internet rep at Royal Moore Toyota in Hillsboro OR:

    2004 4Runner SR5 V8 4WD
    Options:
    50 State Emissions
Black Roof Rack & Cross Bar
    17" Aluminum Wheels w/P265/65R17 Tires
Rear Spoiler w/Center High Mounted Stop Lamp
    Daytime Running Lights
    Third Row Seats
    Carpeted Floor Mats
    VIP RS3200 Plus Alarm System
(FE DR RF AW RL TH V5 CF)

    MSRP:
    $33,073
    INVOICE
    $29,335
    PRICE PAID
    $30,324*

(*Only other expenses at closing were title & registration: $218)

With dealer holdback of 2% of base MSRP, I estimate dealer's actual cost for the vehicle was $28,710, so I paid a markup of $1613 or about 5.6%. I feel like I got a fair deal.

This was the most relaxing vehicle purchase I have ever made and can highly recommend Royal Moore's fleet/internet sales team. I also got prompt, courteous and competitive quotes from several other Portland area fleet/internet reps.

Love the truck: Pacific Blue for the Mrs, third row for the kidlets and a V8 for me!

    Good luck with YOUR purchase.

43850 On the Road for a SR5 V6 without option. Finaced at 1.9% interest rate.

Sounds like a fair deal. If I tried even hard, may get $200 lower.

Any bargains for NJ or philadelphia dealers. John_dode, which dealer did you use?

I am looking for a 2004 4Runner Sport with V8. Most (if not all in NJ) have a moonroof. MSRP is about $34,100. I have been able to get a couple of dealers down to $31,000. Thoughts?

I still wish I could find one without the moonroof. It takes up head-room and goes for about $800.

    Thanks

Talked with my local dealer in Boston, and they placed the order for me (V6 sport, sunroof, side air curtains, 6 disc changer JBL, 115V power point, double-decker cargo, and alarm). Only one problem... the order was initially rejected due to the date. He was going to resubmit the order, but he said if they don't accept the order this week, Toyota will most likely reject 2004 orders due to the lead time (16 wks+). At this point, if the order is accepted, I am looking at delivery in August 2004. If I get rejected, I place an order for a 2005 in June and take delivery before October 2004. If you haven't placed an order by the first week in April, the next time orders get reviewed by Toyota is in May which is about the time when they start retooling for any new features for the next model year.

Went with Sloane of Glenside, though Team Toyota in Langhorne was very competitive. For best results, fax or email the dealership with what you're looking for and tell them that you are shopping multiple dealerships.

Did they plug in or did you have to wire them in?

I've seen these offered by a Toyota dealer and was just wondering if they are the plug-n-play type accessory.
  • glenski01glenski01 Member Posts: 44
On my recent purchase, the TDA charge added was $687.00., as explained, all West Coast area dealers contacted had TDA included in their invoice pricing (checked dealers in AZ, CO, UT, & NV) This charge by Toyota seems unfair, and is in addition to the standard holdback that is usually included.

Whatever, love my 4Runner and looked at many other SUV's and still feel it is superior overall. Could not wait until Oct 05 when the all new midsize Pathfinder arrives, it looks pretty nice and should give Toyota a run for the money.
