Looking in the New York Area to buy a Toyota 4Runner. Seeing lots of adds selling in $28,000/$29,000 area but seeing so many in black and silver. The New York Auto Show is coming soon, does anyone have a favorable experience in going to these shows any getting a good deal to buy there? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

FE, SR, NA, CM, EC, RF, EJ, SP, 32, Z1, WT, E5 and S6.

Price paid is $31,962 + Tax. Around 200 over invoice.

    In St. Louis, MO.

    I got a FIRST offer of 27,800 for '04 V6 4x2 Runner.
Has SR, DJ, Z1, PN, LE, DR, RF, AW.

I'm hoping to bring them down at least $500-600 by competition with other dealers in the area.

I have to visit a few other dealers...but I was wondering what other buyers feel is a good profit for a dealer to make (including holdback of course)?

I am in Hampton Roads, VA.

my dealer is telling me that it is difficult to get a SR5 with a rear spoiler. Please let me know if this is true or is the dealer giving me a line? I am located in central NJ.
  • beanctrbeanctr Member Posts: 99
Bigwave, it may be true that Toyota does not allocate many SR5 models with a spoiler to NJ area. I know here in Northern California, it is hard to find a SR5 WITHOUT a spoiler. It just depends what area you live in. I personally like the look of the spoiler. Perhaps they can take a 4Runner that has been allocated to Northern California and send it your way. Check Toyota's website under "Buy a Toyota" to see how they allocate options on 4Runners in your area.

FINALLY someone else from the Hampton Roads area. Have you checked with RK Toyota? They offered me an excellent deal on a Limited 4X2 a few months ago. Their internet manager is on the ball. Try them and see if you can't get a better deal. I'm still stuck between 2 models for my next vehicle but hopefully I'll make my final decision soon. Goodluck and let me know how it goes!

I have used edmunds.com to get quotes from a number of dealers in my area (central NJ). It seems that some of these guys either bait and switchers or outright liars. Can anyone recommend a reputable/honest dealer in NJ or eastern Pa?
  • lojefflojeff Member Posts: 29
Based on research and test drives, I knew I wanted a V8 sport. Most of the NJ dealerships I dealt with were awful. Lying and bait+switch were the norm, not the exception. In addition, I was upset that in NJ the V8 sport is only sold with the moonroof and other unwanted options. (adding $1000 to the MSRP)

Solution: I took the train to MD and bought from Carmax. Well worth the trip. Absolutely no nonsense deal. No Haggle price shown on website, was what I paid (+$120 which my salesman told me ahead of time). Carmax was discounting more off MSRP than NJ dealers and MSRP was lower because they sold w/o moonroof + misc options.

I am still working through the paperwork to get it registered in NJ but so far so good.
  • kennynmdkennynmd Member Posts: 424
I live in MD snd was considering CArmax myself. My question to you or anyone else, since there is no incentive on the 4Runner, how can they sell the vehicle below invoice? Are they just making the extra money off financing and dealer holdback? thanks
  • micksdad1micksdad1 Member Posts: 32
I ordered my vehicle from the Carmax location in Wisconsin. They make their money on the volume of the vehicles they sell which in part includes financing and dealer holdback. Furthermore, many manufacturers will give additional incentives to dealers based on the quantity of models sold which consumers are not privy to. Most dealerships don't make their money selling new cars -- the real profit is from selling used cars.

I have been told that it is impossible to get a stratosphere mica SR5 w/3row seat. I am located in NJ. Is this true?
  • micksdad1micksdad1 Member Posts: 32
You can't get the 3rd row seat in any state including NJ if you want stratosphere mica.
  • norfolksr5norfolksr5 Member Posts: 3
I got a great quote from Checkered Flag in Va Beach.
    For a 04 4Runner SR5 4x2. only a few options...

    sunroof
    17 in. alloy wheels
    rear spoiler
    roof rack
    mats and cargo net

I got $200 below invoice, I think I can get lower though. I'm tough and patient...that's all it takes!!!
  • ladyofluxuryladyofluxury Member Posts: 93
$200 below invoice is definitely a good deal. Did you go in and deal face-to-face with a salesmen or did you use the Internet Manager? Although checkered flag has a good overall reputation, I haven't been impressed with the salespeople I've dealt with there. Let me know how it goes.

    On April 5, I got my 4runner SR5 4x4 in Woodbridge, NJ

MSRP base price was $29,445.00 and options with Moonroof(900.00),Roof Rack(220.00), Double cargo decker(125.00), 17" Alloy wheels(100.00), Daytime Running Light(40.00), Floor mats/cargo(184.00), Wheel locks(59.00). MSRP was $31,613.00. Invoice at Edmund is $28,053.00 (without Wheel locks)
But dealer added Echomaster(backup sensor 499.00)
    Thus, Total price was $32,112.00

I paid $28,127.00 and out to door price was $30,900.00(with New York tax, registration, etc). I got Toyota special finance of 3.90% for 60 months.
I asked a friend working at another dealer in NJ, he said he could not match it.
What do you think about my deal?
  • bbatesbbates Member Posts: 4
Just purchased a titanium Limited with moonroof, roof rack, double cargo decker, daytime running light, floor mats/cargo, etc. for $33,800. They told me this was invoice (incl. destination). I live in the Minneapolis area and the dealer that I worked with (and the salesperson in particular) was just awesome.

Bigwave, I used Carousel Toyota in West Chester, PA. I too found most local dealers a bit overbearing and under informed. I cannot speak highly enough of Carousel, I even go well out of my way to have my 4R serviced there.

Beware of Rk in Hampton. And the very "Internet Manager" , a woman, who you referenced & shall remain nameless, did the ole bait & switch on me!
They had seen & appraised my trade [fairly], located 'exactly' the vehicle I wanted, arrived @ a good price, I even showed up with a check! Then the crap began. tried to sell me 'something just like it out of stock.' Just like it, except for color & equipment! Left me standing for 30 min, then wouldn't return calls. Came across on the phone well, but a real ditz when it came to making the deal she had agreed to. Clown!

I did the same deal @ Priority in Chesapeake. Made the deal on the phone @ 1:00, took 'em a check the next morning, & was there 30 minutes.
    Good transaction.

First Team in Chesapeake was not efficient, and could not be competetive. Checker Flag is a good dealer; fixed price.

Thanks for the heads up. I had not gone above and beyond the e-mail exchange as I decided at the time to wait until this summer to get my new vehicle. I still haven't fully decided on the 4Runner. However, I will heed your warning. Thanks, and congratulations on your new vehicle!
  • teridemnteridemn Member Posts: 15
Wow...good price. Is it a V8 or V6? I also live in MPLS & paid $37943 for Limited w/V8, daytime running lights, moonroof, NAV system, & floor mat set.

I walked out of couple of Toyota dealers in March with sales guys chasing me and bought a new 4-Runner sport edition (6 cyl, 4x2) with pretty much everything except leather from a 3rd dealer. The 4-runner has 6 disc changer, security upgrade, rear spolier, sun roof, compass mirror, and extra mile package C and only had 8 miles on it. I payed $27,500 + TTL in Texas. I learned that the dealers do not like using spreadsheets and will try to use fuzzy math. I had to correct the final price twice before they got it right. The first time tax was off by more than $50 and second time the final addition was off by ~$20. So make sure you take your calculator with you and add all those numbers up! Glad only have to do this every 10 years or so! I worked my offers over the phone between the dealers and was patient with my final price .... good luck.

Congrats on the new ride! I had an idea you would like Priority. One gets pretty weary shopping multiple dealers [as you must!] on a major purchase. Pretty wringing, right, rayy?
Hope you both enjoy your new trucks. Check out T4R.org for alot of additional information on them.
  • aroutharouth Member Posts: 45
Congrats on finally purchasing. Your like me, you spent months researching what you want. Enjoy that new car smell! Oh and you forgot the most important detail in your description....what color did you get? :)

Just priced a 4x4 4-Runner, $32,100 (moon roof, alloy wheels, security system, roof rack, mats) in northern West Virginia. Dealer is asking $28,900. He's showing me an invoice price of $28,837, but pricing on Edmunds says its more like $28,2xx. First dealership I went to is selling them as fast as they get them, second one had more on lot and is where I got the price above. Is this good for the area or should I look elsewhere. I'll already be driving 90 min. to get servicing.

    Hi All,
A great help with all the posts.
Just signed the papers for a 4Runner Sports V6(4*4)from Westchester(NY),wife test drove Highlanded and the 4runner and chose the former!! I was overjoyed..the least to say!!

The vehicle will have the moonroof, rear spoiler, running lights, cargo double deck. Along with that a dealer option to install Lojack System1/a remote passive alarm/ 2 year prepaid Toyota Auto care maintenance.

Any comments/ suggestions? Also can anybody give some suggestions on the dealer options? I know the sports edition has a engine immobilizer, so am not sure about the Lojack system(seems you need to pay monthly subscription??..need to researchon it myself) or the remote passive alarm. Any input will be highly valued. Thanks..NY,USA

Paid $30375 on MSRP with out the door cost at $33052

I haven't purchased any vehicle yet. I am still undecided between 4Runner and RX330, they are completely different but I love them both. I will keep you all updated on my decision (hopefully will make it before June!).

Arouth... If I did get the 4Runner my choice in color would be between the Pacific Blue Metallic or Dorado Gold pearl :-) What color did you get?

Norfolksr5...CONGRATULATIONS! on your purchase, I'm glad to hear you had a very pleasant experience...keep us updated on your new ride!

They offered me 3900.00 off on a 31,700
4-runner SR5 v-6,moonroof(Brad). I am close to buying and this is the best deal yet. They are 500 dollars better than my next best price at 3400 off in St. Louis, Jay Wolfe Toyota.

I think that is a great price. What dealer did you use. I am looking at practically same thing but around 31,700 with a few less options. Well you have had it only one day I guess and how is it going??
What color did you get??? I am looking at silver with stone interior V6,moonroof. Best deal I found was 3900.00 off and I think that might be about as good as it gets from a 31,700 msrp.

I should add one thing I do not know the document fees for Libertyville. I saw one dealer that had over 500 admin fee and over 500 document/transfer fees on his web site. Not sure if they ever got anyone to pay that but it looking pretty crazy.
  • micksdad1micksdad1 Member Posts: 32
I talked to Libertyville Toyota about ordering a 2004 Toyota 4Runner in February this year. They were willing to order the vehicle for me for 2% over invoice. I ended up ordering from CarMax in Kenosha, Wisconsin for a couple hundred dollars over invoice plus a $99 doc fee. You may want to check them out.
  • al63017al63017 Member Posts: 149
Thanks I am beginning to wonder about Libertyville. They wanted to know my best deal which I have for 3400 off 31,700 SR5 and asked what it would take to get the deal and I said 3900 off. About 2 minutes later they called back and said okay but I asked for email confirmation of numbers and have heard nothing since Friday night. I will keep you posted. My 3400 off is in St. Louis Jay Wolfe Toyota. I know Car Max is great and they are not that far from Libetyville.
    Thanks
  • al63017al63017 Member Posts: 149
Just heard from them and after our third conversation feel there is no doubt they can do the 3900 off the 31,700 SR5. Doc fees just under 65.00--- I have had so many things happen over the years with car deals that until you have more than one conversation about the transaction you feel unsure. Now to decide if driving 6 hours each way is worth 500.00. It would make for a nice paid weekend in Chicago area. My daughter is the main beneficiary of this transaction so sorting out the details with her. Actually me to she won't be taking my Murano and leaving me at home.
  • aroutharouth Member Posts: 45
I would get the gold color, I think the blue looks kinda plain. The lighter colors on this vehicle look the best.

Mine is Titanium metallic. I posted a picture off it in the gallery section on another 4runner site that i'm not allowed to mention here. the website ends in .org though to drop a hint.

We have color swatches here (link) but everyone's monitors are different so I wouldn't rely a whole lot on a computer pic.

I'm looking to buy a new T4R Sport soon and the inventory choices, and therefore the ability to negotiate a good price, are pretty slim here in Little Rock. Does anyone know of a good dealer in Memphis, St. Louis, Dallas or OK City? A good salespersons name and number/email would be a great help too. Thanks!

You'll have to settle for the name of a dealership - read the intro at the top of this page! :-)

Libertyville Toyota in Libertyville Illinois was offering me 3900 off a 31,700 SR5. The next best was Jay Wolfe in St. Louis at 3400 off. Libertyville has only 53.00 doc fee, Wolfe is 199.00. Illinois dealer is near Chicago North side. See my prior messages back about 7 or 8 messages.

I'm currently in the market for a 2004 4 Runner.
What would be the out-the-door-price for the Sports and Limited in the New Jersey area.
    thanks!

Does any one know if there is potential problem if I buy one 4runner from some dealer out side of California. My guess there will be around $500 shipping charge. I noticed some one mentioned there is possible $3,900 off the MSRP. But in CA I barely can talk off $1,000. thanks.
  • ladyofluxuryladyofluxury Member Posts: 93
Danalec, try using the True Market Value section on this site and select the trim and options of the 4Runner you would like. You can then enter your zip code to get an idea of what other buyers in your area have been paying for your specified model. If you want an out-the-door price, multiply whatever the TMV price is by your local tax rate, add in registration and title fees and that will be a general ballpark of what you are looking at out the door. Keep in mind some dealerships have doc fees or other misc fees they add on to your price as well. Hope this helps some, also I use the TMV as a high end, typically an informed buyer can do better than the TMV price. Goodluck!

California has a good FAQ about buying out of state:

Just bought my 4 Runner. MSRP was $33900 and I got it for $29,800. Too many options I didn't need, but how fun they are! I love my car!!!!!

Great deal---that's 4100 off msrp. What is state and name of dealer??
  • al63017al63017 Member Posts: 149
Found this is in the Highlander forum. DARCARS in Maryland has it seems every Toyota except LandCruiser at under invoice. Click on Internet specials that flashes when you get to any of their three Toyota dealerships. One of the three seemed to have many more cars than the other but you will have to discover this as I do not remember which one.

For a purchase in DFW, are these added costs inline with normal practices for a basic SR5?

    DELIVERY/PROCESSING/HANDLING DLR $ 575.00 MSR $ 575.00
    T.D.A. DLR $ 275.00
    M.A.F. DLR $ 375.00
    2% HOLDBACK MSRP DLR $ 543.00
    PIO HOLDBACK DLR $ 13.00

    Thanks for the help.

Some don't look reasonable to me. The holdback figure is a clear indication that the dealer is fooling with you. Holdback isn't something you pay, it's something that the dealer gets as a rebate from the manufacturer. Charging you for it means he gets paid twice. TDA is generally valid, as is the delivery charge. The rest seem bogus. I'd recommend you go to a more honest dealer, but that's not always practical, and quite a few try to pull one thing or another.

I recommend that you compare deals from different dealers on the basis of total "out the door" prices, and compare total prices with Edmunds TMV prices after subtracting local tax/license costs. That's the way you know if you're getting a fair deal. It can be a bit of a fool's errand to examine all the dealer fees, since you don't care as much about the fees as you do the actual total price you pay. The dealer can stick his profit into any individual line item he wants as long as you get a good deal.

I'd also recommend the "carbargains" service as a way to bypass this if you don't want the hassle. They get equivalent quots for you (a service for which you pay, but this demonstrates to the dealers that you're serious) and those quotes are detailed and clear and easily comparable. It worked well for me, even though I was willing and able to understand all the invoice charges.

Does anyone have fairly solid info re how long a preference order takes? I know dealers tell you, prior to order, "3-4 mos", but what I'm interested in finding out is from real buying experiences. I'm in California, btw.
Also, I did a pref order in March and after the order, the dealer told me 8-12 weeks. I'm now in week 9 and just wondering what, in actuality, other folks have experienced.
