    Hello
This is not exactly a problem but I cant get the fuel economy display to stay on while the radio is operating in my Murano SL. It stays on if the audio system is off but goes away after a few seconds of switching the audio on. Does anyone know how to keep the fuel economy display and the radio display on at the same time?

I am shopping for a new car. The Townhall is very enlightening to help make a wise choice in picking the right car. After revieuing many makes the Murano owners seem to have had more troubles then many other makes??? The 04's are in there 2nd year so teething problems arise and no doubt are being corrected at the factory. After driving three or four other makes we both agree that the Murano is the one for us.

Here is a new one for you. As I start up the engine and turn the steering wheel more often now i hear a popping noice. Noticed that there is mention of that at the nissan-tech site. Has anyone had the same and what can be done about it? Appreciate any feedback.

I have a 2003 Murano. I really love it, except for the FM reception. I sometimes get static on local FM stations. The static will be there for a second, then it's gone. Has anyone else had this problem. The dealer put in a new radio but I still have the problem.

My two Nissan dealers in Virginia Beach & chesapeake, Va. have lots of 'O3's, & just a few '04's on there lots. I like to actually drive the car I am buying!! They both say they will get any model I want. I want to test drive it first before its mine. We have not got down to the nitty-gritty of the last dollar yet. I suppose they will want some money down before they trade another dealer for the car I want.

Have a 2004 Murano SL with driver 1 and 2 option.
I have the seat up high because I am short. My husband is tall and has trouble getting into the car and cannot adjust the seat to his position until the key is in the ignition. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
  • dklaneckydklanecky Member Posts: 559
If you register your individual remote key fobs to each of your memory seat settings, the seat will move all the way back when you turn off the car. Then when you unlock it witha particular fob, and insert the key, the seat will move to where you want have it set.

Section 3 page 17 of your owners manual describes the procedure.

It's great when it's set up!

Just thought I would let you know that I really havent had any problems with my Murano, going on 11 months now.

Got locked out once, but I had my windows down so it wasn't a problem. I just hit the unlock button before I get out to check my mail, now.

Never had any popping or rattle noises, I guess mine was one of the rare Mo's that got put together right! =)

Anyhow, just thought I'd voice my experience, because people coming in here considering this car should know it isn't all bad!
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
Yes the Murano is a very nice car/SUV/crossover.

Sure I have a few rattles, but what car dosn't they are all made out of plastic interiors now.

Here, here. Me too, not a single problem so far. Bought the car...uhhh SUV since 7/03. I have started towing my boat from my house to the lake, about 7 miles using the Murano. Engine runs a little high but hey, can't complaint when I am towing 3000lbs of boat behind me. Will tow the boat from Austin to Pensacola beach, 12 hours trip this summer. Will see how she will hold up.

I was wondering if anyone is having a brake pulsation problem? My Murano 2wd has 400 miles on it and my front brakes are pulsating. I took it to Nissan and they cut the rotors! I was also wondering if anyone notices a growl when you press hard on the gas. I am not sure if this is normal, it sounds like the transmission. Other then that everything else is great. I am very impressed with this suv. Any input is appreciated.

Hi - I have an 04 w/3600 miles. I locked into AWD 1x in the snow, drove 12 miles and blew out the Transfer Case. Dealer replaced it 1x already, but I just used AWD lock again and it smells again (surprise). Nissan is freaking. It smells like oil dripping on something hot like exhaust. Has anyone else had anything like this. My dealer and Nissan tell me "I'm the only one." Help please. I love the car, but ...

Hi, I am looking at finalizing my purchase of the '04 Murano SE w Touring package.

    Quick questions:

    1. Can anyone explain the difference between the SE and SL

    2. Are the kinks worked out of it?

    3. How is it adjusting to the rear window?

    Thanks

    Dave

Good thing your under the 50k 60 month power train warranty, isn't it!

I have an 03 with 15,000 miles on it and no problems at all yet. I do drive with the AWD lock switch engaged, but as the owners manual suggests, I only use it to get started in slippery conditions.

Your not driving with it locked on all the time or are you?
  • shop4shop4 Member Posts: 17
First off I want to say how enjoyable it is to drive the Murano. I have had it since July and have 8500 miles on it. But.....After driving 120 miles there was a jerking of the vehicle while on the highway, with a raise of the tachometer. I brought the vehicle immediately to a dealer in Maryland where they immediately told me that the transmission had to be replaced! It took three weeks, but Nissan was very helpful. When I told the dealer that I bought it from on Long Island, they thought I was crazy, and said that they never heard of a problem. Since then all is fine, except for...The doors continue to lock themselves occassionally. To answer your question about the rear window---you get used to it very quickly.
  • kb28843kb28843 Member Posts: 6
I've only locked in wet (snow) and driven (not just started) for 1x - 12mi (some above/some below 20mph); 1x - 1 mile (some above/some below 20 mph) and 1x - 1 mile (under 20 mph). I reread my owners manual last nite on the AWD lock issue -it's not too helpful. My dealer/service mgr is even sketchy on what is and isn't allowed w/the lock button. Thanks for your help.

    1. Can anyone explain the difference between the SE and SL
    More $$$$, firmer suspension.

    2. Are the kinks worked out of it?
Some yes, some no, depends who you talk to.

    3. How is it adjusting to the rear window?
    Yes
  • dklaneckydklanecky Member Posts: 559
The owner's manual is very clear on one thing, you don't want to drive on dry pavement with the AWD lock button engaged.

It's also (IMO) pretty clear about what you shouldn't do with the AWD button locked.

Section 5, pages 18 and 19 of the owner's manual are pretty specific.

What questions do you have after reading these pages?

I can't think of any questions that aren't covered.

I would like to know if anyone else is having this problem also, I start the vehicle and turn the wheel in either direction, step on the gas only to get a loud popping sound in the steering, only happens once I'm starting out never while I'm actually driving. Why is this? How to fix it?
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
Yes there is a service bulletin on this:

    Reference: Date:

I've noticed a lot of posts regarding the 2003 Murano and its issues (alternator, transmission, windshield, FM reception, self-locking doors etc). Does anyone have a 2004 Murano? I imagine that a lot of the above issues were resolved in the 2nd generation vehicle. I drove one yesterday and loved it, but would like to know if anyone has one and if the 2003 model issues have been resolved...?
  • boysrus2boysrus2 Member Posts: 2
Thank you dmmakoski for the info, I will look into that.
  • dklaneckydklanecky Member Posts: 559
I think that you'll find that most people who post on these boards are usually of the unhappy with their purchase type.

I have an 03 Murano SE with a few minor rattles, but nothing I won't be able to take care of once the weather warms up. I have no problems with the CVT, steering, alternator, locking doors, or anything else.

I'm up to 15,000 miles and I would re purchase the same vehicle in a minute (SE, loaded with everything including NAV) if something happened to the one I'm in now.

Make sure YOU test drive anything your interested in carefully before making any decisions about what to put on or take off your short list for new vehicles.

IMO, the Murano can't be touched for the overall value for the money in the mid-size SUV category. It's far nicer than the Pilot, has better acceleration, braking, handling, and better gas mileage than anything in it's class.
  • eweisseweiss Member Posts: 11
Thanks for the reply. I have taken my time regarding new cars and, like you, have found that the Murano far outstrips its competition (Pilot, Highlander, etc) for value, features and drive-ability. I'm planning on getting the SL w/ premium since it covers all my needs/wants. Since it's pretty much warm here all the time (San Diego), hopefully there won't be any rattles at all. Here's hoping all goes well.

I have a 2004 SL with about 600 miles on it. My mileage so far is pitiful (averaging about 14.8 MPG, and that's about 80% city, 20% hwy driving). Shuold I be patient until the engine is fully broken in? What else can be done?
  • edev31edev31 Member Posts: 41
    Hi Everyone,
I have the same question as eweiss regarding the 2004 Murano and if all the "bugs" have been worked out.
I currently have a 2004 RX330 with so many tranny problems, electrical problems, rattles, etc. that my dealer can't fix so they offered to buy it back. The Murano was my other choice from the beginning(it was a hard decision!)
I know the problems usually don't start occurring until you've had the car a while, but if anyone has a 2004, your feedback would be greatly appreciated!
  • achadhaachadha Member Posts: 106
damn that many problems with the RX330? I had no idead they were having that many problems? what was the tranny and electrical problems?
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
I've had my Murano SL AWD since March of last year and have about 25,000 miles on it. I have had no problems except for a few minor rattles in the B pillars. I get anywhere from 16mpg when driving mostly in the city to about 26-27mpg when driving conservatively on the highway (50-55mph).
  • shop4shop4 Member Posts: 17
My Murano has 8500 miles on it, and is 7 months old. It averages 17 around town, and 21-22 going 70 on the highway. BUT--In the extreme cold weather that mileage drops like a rock to 12 and 16. My GMC Jimmy never had that problem. (nor any others)
  • edev31edev31 Member Posts: 41
    achadha,

Hope this isn't considered off -topic since were on the Murano board!

The tranny lurks and jerks, when you least expect it (or want it to-for accident's sake!) and almost every time i decelerate, something underneath the car "clunks". There was a supposed TSB for the first problem, but it doesn't help. My dealer said there wasn't a TSB for the "clunk" but I just found out yesterday from the helpful RX330 Problems & Solutions board here that there is one! It really doesn't help that my service dept. is either completely ignorant, or totally dishonest! I'm certainly not impressed with Lexus' famed customer service!

The electrical problems:power rear door just stops working for a day or so, then works again. Power window wouldn't go up, several times, and Navi just "blacked out" for a few hours twice.

My car was manufactured in May, so it is one of the "newer" cars from a production standpoint.
But I am not alone! Many other people are having the identical problems, unfortunately :(

Maybe I should have bought a Murano-and still may!

I bought the Murano sl awd in feb 2003 and have had no problems. I have had a rattle here and there but they have seemed to have gone away now. I have 13k miles on it right now. Such a joy to drive and very quick especially in Ds mode
  • kb28843kb28843 Member Posts: 6
dklanecky - i'm not that stupid to drive in lock on dry pavement. I've had Ford Explorers for years w/o any trouble and have done extensive AWD/4WD. I have an 04 SL and the pages in my book don't match your page references. Nevertheless, there is nothing in my book that says you can't drive in wet w/lock on. Over 20 it goes automatically back to FWD; under 20 it goes automatically to AWD c/o the transfer case. Dealer even confirmed this.

Does anyone have any experience with this - They've replaced the transfer case 1x already and in AWD lock and 6" of snow yesterday, it was smelly (oil on hot metal smell) when I got home.

I really like Edmunds and think they provide both prospective and present owners of vehicles a tremendous amount of info in their auto reviews and in the Town Hall Discussions. I've owned my Murano since 2/1/03 and have had zero problems with anything, no squeaks, no rattles, etc. I really still enjoy driving and owning this vehicle. My point is that, with posts so easy to make, about problems with a vehicle, I think it's possible to decide against buying ANY vehicle by looking at the problem posts. Problems that people had with their new vehicles never had the exposure that sites like Edmunds provide. While that's a good thing (I keep track of problems and fixes here and the excellent Tech Bulletins that posters here are kind enough to take the time to provide us just in case my vehicle develops one), I'd like to remind readers that while there is a Discussion for "Problems and Fixes" there is none for anything like "I'm happy as heck with this vehicle!!".
    Get my point?
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
there is none for anything like "I'm happy as heck with this vehicle!!".

Actually, we've have a number of topics in that vein but, unfortunately they don't last due to lack of interest. (E.g, the Happy Ford Explorer Owners discussion lasted a whopping 365 posts!)

I would like to know if there is a Murano user with more than 50,000 miles and the experience so far?
  • muranoslmuranosl Member Posts: 2
Wonder if anyone else has this problem?

I purchased a brand new '04 Nissan Murano in Feb of 2004.
To date it has less that 300 km on it.
The first time I took it through a touch-less car wash the sunroof started leaking in the wash.
I made sure the glass roof was fully closed, and just has the inside slide door opened purposely
to check for leaks. To my surprise, it was dripping water from the roof.
I contacted my dealership the next day and had booked an appointment the for the following week.
I explained to them what happened and was told to leave the SUV for the day for inspection.
A few hours later I was told I can pick up my SUV. I was given 2 different answers from my dealership service department and one resolution which was UNACCEPTABLE. I was told explained by one person that the sunroof had these drainage holes to filter out water and that if its not full drained out, it will drip water if I open the roof. (My roof was not opened when it was dripping.) Secondly, I was told that Sunoco uses a high pressure system who clean cars, with that and my SUV being tall and close to the pressure valves it will lift the molding around the roof and cause water to slip through. The resolution I was told was not to use Sunoco's washes. Which I feel is not acceptable.
I've had other cars and there was no problems with the high pressure washes.
I asked them how did they test for leaks on my SUV while I had left it there.
I was told that the has use a hose and prayed the roof and found no leaks. Not very effective way to simulate a high pressure wash.
Now if its just the high pressure wash system is causing the problem,if i was driving down the highway at 100km/ hour in the rain with wind speeds of 40 km/ hour, which is equivalent the high pressure if a car wash, my car will leak.
I've contacted the head office for customer service at Nissan Canada and was given about the same story and resolution. I have another appointment One Monday March 29th, this time I will ask them to drive through the wash with me.
I have a friend who has a Murano as well and there are no leaks in his sunroof.
Although the car is under warranty, do I have any recourse? Since Nissan is of no help.
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
Have no leaks yet (just installed sun roof deflector).

Do you have the sunroof deflector?
  • muranoslmuranosl Member Posts: 2
yes i have a sunroof defector.
my nissan dealer ship is trying to blame the defector as a contributor to the over flow of water being trapped in the sunroof area and causing the leak.

    update on the problem:
April 1 2004- The sales manager at my dealership called me yesterday to address my problem. he said that he spoke with the shop foreman and nissan canada. there is nothing they can further do. basically, i'm screwed.
i called another dealership in my area and booked an appointment for April 7th. i explained the situation to him and what he other nissan dealership had said. although there was not much he can do over the phone. he offered to go thru the car wash with me and see the leak himself as it will give him first hand knowledge of where the leak is and the replay it back to his foreman.
best answer if got in 2 weeks. as i had requested with the original dealership to do and even offered the wash ticket, yet they rejected my request. i just hope it will be fixed this time.
the other day, i saw another murano driver in a parking lot and asked him if he had experienced the same problem. when i mentioned the sunroof, immediately he said that it leaked when in the car wash. LOL. nissan should really do a recall if more owners complain. feel i should've gotten a honda pilot instead.

    any thoughts?
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
All I can suggest is looking at how the clip holding the deflector are installed correctly. If not they could allow more water to enter.

I never take my cars to a car wash so I can not comment on that. I pefer to wash my hand.

We have had our 2004 Murano SL for about a month, and have had one curious problem concerning the door locks. This is not the same problem that appears elsewhere on this forum where the doors lock by themselves. Our problem concerned the doors locking without being able to unlock them. It first occurred in the front passenger door - it could not be opened from the inside or outside. The door lock button inside on the door could not be moved manually, and it did not unlock when hitting the unlock button on the driver's door or the keyfob. Later in the day, it started to be able to be opened from the inside only. A day or so later, the driver's side back door had the same problem, and then the other back door finally got "sick" too. We finally brought it into the dealer, and he said he had to swap out the "lock modules" in all of the doors from another Murano they had on the lot. He also said he has not seen this problem before. It seems fine now, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Otherwise, we have loved the Murano!!

I have a 2004 SL AWD. I hear a rattle from the center storage console between the two front seats when I go over bumps. Nothing is stored in the console so I can't figure out what is making the noise.

Is anyone else experiencing this sort of noise? Any resolutions?
  • dmmakoskidmmakoski Member Posts: 72
    Is the cover completly closed?
You have a 04, some 03's had an issue with the lid not closing which could lead to rattling.
  • gone2mauigone2maui Member Posts: 7
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I confirmed it's closed tight. As a matter of fact it rattles even when I'm idling.

    Thanks.

I have a 2003 SL with 15K miles on it. It has a dealer installed Nissan wind deflector. Sorry, but no problems with any leaks, and it's been through plenty of car washes, including a touchless one (which I assume is high pressure).

Hello all After reading items 349 & 351 I looked at the possibility of water getting by the seal of the closed sun roof. My 04 Murano W/ 4K miles, mostly from Chesapeake, Va. to Key West Fl. to Birmingham, AL. to home got 23 to 30 MPG. The 45 to 50 speed on the over seas highway helped to bring the avg. up. the hiway speed was 70-80 MPH. Anyway the possibility of leaks are increased because the rubber lip along the bottom of the wind deflector has only two weep holes around the far edges apx. 2" up so water can collect above the seal line. The two coated sheet metal braces go thru the seal area and could allow water to pass. The seal is very soft and complient now, but in a few years of being exposed to sun will get hard and allow water to get buy the edge of the hold down clip. An easy fix would be to cut drain notches along the front or lowest line of the seal to allow any accumulated water to drain away. Their ought to be a service bulitin issued on this condition. Looks like the one got overlooked. Who will be responsable for the staining of the headliner on new cars W/ fresh seals as noted in the previous posts? Edmunds review of the VST was right on "power robbing" Why didn't they use the Maxima trans. its quit smooth and has lots of "go" between 35 & 45. The VST is very smooth generally but can be felt shifting in the 15 to 35 MPH range, so why use it? How will this VST be receivet down the roar by the aftermarket trans. shops? As i hear problem units are completely changed out by the dealed. The avg. trany. shop may not have the resorces to do that. This will bring down the resale of these cars.

It's CVT. And I think it works great! Would never go back to old fashion automatics.

I have a 2003 SL Murano, AWD. I love the car, however, i have noticed that there have been a few times, that when you get out of the car, it sometimes locks itself.( not all doors) The dealer told me that this has happened to a few customers and a new locking mechanism was replaced. It also has an oil leak. After a few hours of waiting, they told me they had to order parts from nissan as this was not a common problem. Well since they got the parts needed,I returned to have them installed. Needless to say, they have had my car for 2 WEEKS now. The other parts they needed are on backorder. My luck. Maybe the lemon law is near. I do like the car though.
  • gerapaugerapau Member Posts: 211
Not quite sure where you get that the CVT is "power robbing". In their comparison test Edmunds did say "the CVT made the Murano feel sluggish at takeoff" but then they said "the Sport mode provided instant acceleration and a deep-throated roar". Well duh? If you want good acceleration then use the sport mode. If you want better gas milage then use the regular drive mode. To be honest with you, starting from a stand still I cannot personally see any difference between regular and sport mode when accelerating hard. It is not a rocket ship but definately very quick for a 4000 pund AWD SUV.

As for feeling the shifting between 15 and 35 MPH, if you can feel any shifting it is much less noticable than in ANY regular automatic transmission.

While the CVT is not for everyone, once you drive it for awhile you will get used to it. Over time you may actually be like me and find that this is probably the best thing about the Murano (OK, maybe second to the styling).

On the Friday 11/29/03 I leased a new Nissan Murano. It has been a royal pain.

Almost immediately the windows started letting themselves down when I was not around. My salesman and then the service manager told me the Murano did not have this problem and that I must be doing something wrong.

On the night of 12/10/03 the car let the windows down the interior of the car was open to a hard rain for eight hours. The dealership then contacted the tech service who acknowledged that Nissan was having this problem with a couple models and with my VIN number is in the right range. Nissan even has a service bulletin about the problem.

I contacted Nissan customer relations who authorized the use of a rental car while they fixed it.

The pickup driver for the rental car company asked what kind of car I had. When I said a Murano he said that he had had a lot of customers with Muranos and “ did my transmission fail too.”’ I replied, “not yet.” When I quizzed my salesman about it he acknowledged the Murano had transmission problems but, “that was in the early ones. They’re a lot better now.”

The next thing to fail was my CD player. I was initially told that it was just dirt in the head and that I was not cleaning it often enough. The car was less than a month old! Service has since identified that the unit was defective and replaced it.

I was out of the county for two weeks in December. Upon my return, problems started again. Sometime around the 3rd week of December the car locked me out while I was warming it up behind my house. That turned out to be very fortunate. I started carrying extra keys.

We had a blizzard 1/24/04. I was out at a local club with friends. I started my car and let it warm up while I cleared the windows. I now discovered a couple more unique features of the Murano. Because of the long sloped front window the defroster would not adequately warm the window to keep the snow melted. This same window requires long windshield wiper arms. It takes very little snow to stall these wipers making them entirely useless.

I limped back home stopping every few minutes to clear my windshield. I had very little visibility. The defroster would not clear the fog from the windows and the windshield wiper would not work. One time while I was out clearing the windows (with the motor running) the doors locked (I was parked with the transmission in park). It was 13 degrees out!

On or about the 2/4/04 I came out of an IGA and my windows were down again. At the time I had about $1400 of valuables in the back . On the 2/12 my dealer disabled the remote entry system and replaced the radio.. They could not assure me that the windows problem was fixed and the service manager, suggested that “I should not carry valuables in this car.”

On 2/14 I had two more random lockouts. My dealer then reprogrammed the key fob so I could not use the remote entry system.

I asked to return the car. I have had three customers relations men. On 3/6/04 was told that Nissan had decided I was stuck with the car!

On 3/13 the car rolled down the windows while there were lots (!) of expensive items in the car. The next day while I was sitting in the car (with the key in the ignition) viewing some pictures the doors locked.

Now some times when I lock the doors the horn does not sound. That may not sound like much but I use this feature to find the car in a crowded parking lot or in my parking garage. It also means I must physically check to see if the doors are locked when it happens.

Then the display started telling me my left door was open when it wasn’t. On 4/26 the car was acting up and I got into the dealership. The display said the door was open, the remote would not beep, and while we were standing there the windows went down. Two service managers were there observing and I got it in writing on a dealership repair order.

Throughout this Nissan has been uncooperative -- pretty much suggesting I was making it up. My dealer won’t take the loss and is hesitant to back me up for fear of Nissan.

I had been a good Nissan customer. I have had five new Nissans in 1975 (B210 wagon) , 1978 (pickup) , 1981 (king-cab 4x4 pickup) , 1997 (bought a low mileage Pathfinder that was serviced at same dealer), 2000 (Pathfinder) and now in 2003 (Murano). My kids have owned three more used ones (280Z, 280 ZX, and a NX).

The problems remain unfixed. The case is now in the hands of the Ohio lemon-law administrator. I have filed an NHTSB complaint. NISSAN has been uncooperative and the dealer has not been much better. I am an ex-Nissan customer that is being as vocal as I can. I expect backlash from Nissan but I can document all of this.
