Heres what a OdyClub Member said:

    Just my 2 cents.

Honda has a right to withhold information about the 05 Ody but is a smart thing to do. Consider if they were to release photos and specs, they would then get a better idea of whether or not people like it. They could release the info then read our posts about the good and the bad.

I snuck a peek at the photos of the 05 ody and really dont like it. I like the slick look of the 04. The only this the 04 is missing is the magic middle seat. The nose of the 05 looks too bulky. looks a little like the Caravans big front end, or fords freesatrs front end. The back end is okay, has an MDX kind of look but I still like the 04's rear better.

I hear many people talk about the JDM odyssey and personally dont consider it a minivan. To me you should be able to go from the front passenger seat to the third row seat in a minivan without opening any doors. Needless to say the JDM Ody to me is just a wagon with a third row. I really like the look of it though. Combine that slick look of the JDM Ody into the 05 US Ody and I would take one now.

The Quest has too odd of a look for me. I think Toyota did a great job with the Sienna. Its not too bold of a look yet more than what Honda offers.

By the way, This is from a 24 Y.O with 1 kid and one on the way.

What are your opinions about this? About what he said bout the 05 ODY!?
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
I think that by the time any mfr releases photos and specs, much of the tooling expenses have been made and radical changes will be expensive. The time to get a good idea of whether people like it or not is to have focus groups in the early design stages using drawings or full size clay models. Even if Honda released the pics of the '05 a few months ago, how much do you really think they would change before formal introduction? Keep in mind that according to auto-report.net, the press was introduced to the '05 Odyssey in mid-June. First photos appeared the beginning of June and production was to start in July. Honda would have had to release photos late last year to make tooling changes and account for lead times to order all the other components. I don't think this is feasible to any mfr and does nothing but hurt sales of the existing model.

As I stated at Odyclub.com, what did we do before these forums were created? We waited for something in the magazines. Did people really complain this much about lack of info before?

Stop it man, you're making me all misty-eyed.....

I don't see enough of my kids as it is. My kids watch enough TV when they're at home as it is.

Damn it, we're all eating around the kitchen table, TOGETHER, tonite...

I agree that the RES is overpriced. My sister has a portable DVD that she had before the factory one in her '03 Ody. It is certainly more convenient to start a DVD from the dash rather than reaching back for a device and then putting it on your lap and trying to start it. I like having as much factory stuff as possible since that helps with durability. I had a CD changer installed in my current car by the dealer after purchase and the stupid thing cant be run from the current radio controls. It has a seperate control that looks stupid.

mrblonde49: I agree with the distraction statement. It is REALLY distracting to have constant talking behind you while you are trying to concentrate on the road. There is alot of traffic in this city and my 5 year old sits right behind me and asks constant questions. Thus requiring me to take my mind off the traffic and road and answer her. It is a much different situation than a conversation because it is like a machine gun coming at you. I can hardly answer one question before she is bombarding me with the second and so forth. I ask her numerous time to have quiet time, but it does no good. Personally I think that is much worse than a cell phone (which I dont use while I am driving either.)

    rorr: LOL
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,495
There is a way to short circuit the process. Just give her the cell phone, and let her make calls while you drive.

Speaking from experience, and the description of your daughter, it won't be too long before she discovers them anyway. Plus, it will keep her from bothering you!.

Most options are. Honda does not seem to be as greedy with Odyssey options as Toyota is with the Sienna.
I hope the Odyssey styling is not radically changed as the Odyssey is still the most attractive minivan even though the design has been sold for 6 years now (5 model years).

I agree with you in theory.......there are many parents out there who are too uninvolved with their children. For many of us though, we devote the majority of our time and energy to our children and wouldn't consider a litte diversion and/or quiet time in the car a bad thing. Particularly as a stay-at-home Mom with a husband who works alot and coaches all the kids sports, the only chance we may have to discuss things we otherwise don't get into MIGHT be in the car if the kids aren't fighting or asking why their brother keeps staring at them. And, I wouldn't want to mislead you, the RES system by itself does not provide hours upon hours of silence. It buys us approx. an hour and half or so........and, I'll take it.
  • amc731amc731 Member Posts: 42
Lots of good suggestions. We did the "towel thing" but never thought to punch holes in it...I like it. We've had leather in our Olds Silhouette for 5 years now with no problems to report. Whenever I cleaned the interior I'd wipe the seats down with Lexol cleaner and then conditioner.

I still can't switch to cloth though until I get a protector for my husband's seat. He's been known to spill coffee, soda, ice cream, big mac's..........you name it:)

    OTF LOL.

lynnw and amc731 - so when you're in the car for more than 1.5 hours, what's the strategy you employ then?

OK -> if I had one of these things, maybe i'd be tempted (very) to go to the video or grocery store and pick up a DVD, and watch it in the peace and tranquility of the van, parked in the garage. ;)

while we do have a VHS player, we have no DVD, no cable, no SAT, not even an antenna on the roof. sometimes, we can't even get a clear picture of certain local broadcast channel programming. ha.

rorr - you can get really misty now.

When we all get our Odysseys, let's bring our families to a rustic cabin in the Rockies and we'll sit around a campfire, hold hands and sing Kum Ba Ya. No external electronic equipment allowed. BYOTP.

Sign me up:) There will at least be beer right?? right?? Because I can't possibly spend that much time with all those children without a drink! (kidding -- you guys are gonna kick me off the forum now, huh?) Now you have me thinking that maybe we SHOULD give up all our modern conveniences and disconnect the cable, etc. Oh wait, that would only really torture me and my husband....especially the hubby. Life without ESPN is not worth living to him. Apparently I have the odd children (ok, so I already knew that), I find myself somedays begging them just to sit down and watch a little TV already!!! They'd rather be on the move and when on the move amounts to soccer in the living room while I'm cooking dinner, I'll take Cartoon Network anyday!!!!!

As for what we do after the 1 hour 1/2.......after 100 games of I spy, punch-buggy, "can you spell ....?", "do you know.....", "what's 100 X 15?", etc etc we also have to say "stop touching him" and "we're almost there" 1,000 times or so.

why none of the manufacturers has come up with the unit to seal off the back and spray in sleeping gas.....
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
Just tape some political commentary and pop it in the RES - that is sleeping gas to kids. ; ^ )

    LOL......
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
I definitely hope they have the sleeping effect on the kids versus what they do to me...I get nauseous. Don't want four nauseous kids in the back of MY van.

Enjoy it while you can. You are the center of their universe. They will soon turn into moody teens that will not acknowledge your presence. You will fondly look back at their preteen years as the best ever.

PS I am not trying to be negative about teens. It seems to be a human condition.

....anybody know when the official Honda press release of all the info on the new Ody will be?
  • amc731amc731 Member Posts: 42
Just as an FYI.....we've been home all day and it's been raining w/flash flooding. I've tried, I really have, but darn it I finally broke down and TOLD the rugrats to please....for G*d's sake....find SOMETHING on TV to watch:)

On the other hand, I might have to give up my internet banking. Just figured out I made a typo last week and sent Blockbuster $450.00 too much......so now, I either get my money back or we watch a whole bunch of movies!! (I swear, I'm not making that up!)
  • gjay1170gjay1170 Member Posts: 67
Are you in South Jersey? I'm in central Jersey, and it's raining like crazy here. At least I didn't have to water the plants. My kids are board since we can play outside, but one is watching TV and the other one is playing with her shell and rock collection. It's going to be rainy all week here. I'm also sure that you'll get adjusted for you accidental payment.

Did you grow up on a farm?
And my kids could say how rough they had it growing up riding in a VW Bug and then an unreliable Dodge van and later a plain Chevy van.
It would have been much nicer to have had a comfortable, reliable Odyssey when our kids were growing up.
Fortunately, 3 of my grandchildren have been able to ride in a comfortable Odyssey EX for 3 years now and 3 others have had a comfortable Grand Caravan Sport for 1 and 1/2 years.

Just preorder a 05 EXL RES for the "list price" (MSRP). We purchased from the same salesmen four years ago and got him to throw in the heavy duty all season floor mats for free. The manager says that I we change our minds no problem in giving back our $200 deposit since he will sell every Odyssey he can get his hands on. This high volume dealer in NY is supposed to get 40 Odyssey in the first month and they got deposits for about 25 vans already! The delaer knew about the 8 passenger seating, but kind of acted like it was going to be a standard feature not an optional item? He also said that they got to view pictures of the 05 Odyssey already.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
And what month does the dealer expect his 40 NEW Odysseys to arrive?
When is the start up date for building the new 2005 Odysseys?
  • matmechmatmech Member Posts: 12
I didn't get to see any pictures (for fear of the Honda secret police?). New Odyssey to arrive in late September. My van is to be delivered no later than October 04. Dealer was going to put down Sept 04 delivery, but changed it to October to be safe.

If the van has 90% of the rumored content posted here it going to be a hot seller for a while.

I really wanted the NAVI without the RES, but at this point, I'll wait until 2006 and maybe get one with the NAVI and RES. It's either get that or a Saab/Volvo, and I'm not sure about that either.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Just because Odyssey does not offer NAV without RES?
Please tell me I misread your post.
Does the GM Saab or the Ford Volvo offer NAV?
  • amc731amc731 Member Posts: 42
I'm kinda confused.....those cars are very different. If you don't need the space, what appeals to you about the Ody? When the Volvo SUV was first advertised, I swore it was our next vehicle. But, then I got a look at how small the inside was and had to admit it was off the list. As for a Saab........that was a car I wanted back in the days before kids:)
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
I'm pondering the Ody, and the Saab/Volvo because there's advantages to all three and there are advantages to owning two vans. The Saab/Volvo would serve the purpose of a commuter, and so would the Odyssey. They're all in the same price range, around $30K.
Plus the 9-3 gets a nav next year, but I forgot where I heard that. The S40 has an available NAV already. here's the breakdown:
    Honda Odyssey EX-L NAV/RES
    Saab 9-3
    Volvo S40
    what do you think?
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
After going thru many informative posting here, I am pretty pumped up about getting the 05 Odyssey. I think I am ready to put a security deposit down to pre-order it. Many of you have suggested to do so with a local Honda volumn leader. My question is how do I find out which dealerships are volumn leaders in my area. I live in SF south bay area.
  • amc731amc731 Member Posts: 42
That's just too darn hard of a question first thing in the morning. I can't even pretend to have an informed opinion on those cars since I've only looked at SUV's and vans lately. How many kids do you have? The only thing I can say is that we have 3 kids so, when my husband was looking for a car for work (he's in sales and drives all day) one of the key features it HAD to have was seating for 3 in the back seat. It sounds silly, but it's amazing how many cars and small SUV's do not have this. Since there are occasions that he has all three in his car, we're glad we didn't settle for less seating in cars we were tempted to get.

    Good luck with your search!
  • odyncodync Member Posts: 19
Anyone actually seen what the 05 Ody second row seats will look like? I would like to order an 05 as the dealer near me has a few from his allotment left, but I really can't picture what these seats look like. I currently have an 02 Ody EX and like the captains seats. Also, will this new configuration be standard or an option? I just hope they don't mess up the good seating they have now for the sake of 8 passenger room....(something I don't really need).
  • lynnwlynnw Member Posts: 119
I agree with you. 8 passenger seating is nice, but not necessary for me. Depending on how the middle seat looks, I more than likely would rather have 2 captains chairs. I only have 2 children and really only need seating for those few times there are extra passengers.
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
8 passenger seating sure is great for those of us with 3 kids though. It means much more flexibility, as the whole family can fit it the vehicle with the rear seats down if lots of cargo room is needed. I really like the 3 accross seating in my first gen Odyssey. Even though it is a small van it can carry much more than a larger van that only has 2 seats in the middle (when our whole family is in the vehicle).
  • mochisushimochisushi Member Posts: 126
8 passenger may be great with 3 kids, but it is mandatory with 4 kids. That way, my wife's parents can ride with us in one car or two of my oldest boy's friends. Traveling cross country with my mother is also easier with 8 passenger, too, as we can put two kids in the rear and three in the middle where the seating is wider (no wheel well intrusion).

Anderson Honda in Palo Alto says it is one of the largest Honda dealers in the world, selling over 5000 vehicles a year. It says that Ward's Dealer Business Magazine rated it the top Honda dealer in the country for Internet sales. According to the articles on the Internet, this rating occurred in April 2001.

I put my name on a list with one of the sales people, who was the one who said that the price might me what the market will bear. Back in '99 Anderson sold the Odyssey at MSRP, but I could not get a commitment from this particular sales person that it would sell the 05 Odyssey at MSRP. If you have better luck, let us know.
  • odyncodync Member Posts: 19
I live outside of Charlotte NC and the small Honda dealer near me has said he will not sell over MSRP... So, I am working with him to see what features each level will have and what this new model will really look like...and then will take one of his allotments.

I have seen the spy pictures and don't really like the front end...I hope the final production looks less like a Chysler than the spy pictures does....
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
The GM at Los Gatos Honda just quoted $2995 over MSRP. Larry Hopkins Honda won't comitted to a price and won't even take my deposit. I guess I'll try Anderson Honda now...
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
    Hi, ace1000,
Don't bet on Anderson Honda for MSRP. I bought my from them in 2001 for $1500 over MSRP. That wasn't bad considering AutoWest Honda in Fremont wanted to sell me one for $2500 over MSRP and said they were doing me a favor.

Anyway, other than the price, the buying experience with Anderson Honda wasn't bad.
  • samnoesamnoe Member Posts: 731
I also hope they'll not eliminate the slide-by-side feature. which lets you switch between 2 captain chairs and a one piece bench seat (so you get more room for, say, a suitcase between the sliding door and the seat).

The smartest way is as Toyota did with the Sienna. Offer 7-passneger and 8-passenger versions.
  • fbearfbear Member Posts: 117
No luck casper. The only models with NAV also have leather from the factory.
  • lynnwlynnw Member Posts: 119
I definitely see the need many of you have for the 8 passenger seating. I hope it is done in a comfortable format for all. Last night I saw a clearance commercial for the '04 Odyssey. Local dealer has all theirs on clearance, this means that they must have a very definite date on the new models release. I plan to call the dealer myself seeing how my DH is not taking any action. As usual, I have to grab the bull by the horns to get things done.
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
I am gonna have 3 kids pretty soon. At first I was pretty convinced that I should get the 8-seat Siena because I wanted to have 3 kids sit in the same row so no one will feel being left out on the 3rd row. But one major problem I saw was that it was not easy to get to the 3rd row when the 2nd row was filled with kids car seats. When we test drove the Siena, my 3 year old loved to sit on the 3rd row. That's why I didn't get the Siena, just yet. I'd like to see if the new Odyssey has any inovative design with the 8-seating arrangement.

Just called Capitol Honda in San Jose, the sale woman said they have been the largest honda dealership in Northen CA since 1993. Not sure if there is any truth to it since Steven Creek Honda claim they are the largest also. (: She said they don't take any pre-order at this point but would call me when the van is arrived.

I was fighting with my wife for RES but she insist interacting program during the long trip. Sometimes she need to sit in the back to handle the war between my two DD. Last month, I bought a portable DVD players with 7" LCD display with carry bag that can be use as holder in vehicle. Early July I install at the back row before road trip. My wife's nephew came along (he is 7). The boy is restless and keep making a noise, yelling at us and my 2 DD. Once we get thru the hilly area and hit the HWY 5, I ask my elder to load the DVD so all three sit in the back to watch it. We never heard any noise till closing LA for 3.5 hours! Suddenly I became hero from criminal due to unapproved action!<lol> Portable is cheap and can buy a holding bag to secure it behind or between front seat. But be aware of frequent movement on rough surface or broken pave road due to the imperfect securing. That why I held on until we got on the smooth interstate.

I got mine '99 from Anderson Honda while I placed orders at Stevens Creek and Hopkins. Anderson ask MSRP, Stevens Creek require some not expansive acceories and Hopkins request at least $500 options at MSRP. I always deal with Fleet dept not sales who try to sell you everything they could for max their commsion. I ordered in Sep. '98 to get those price. When I picked up my van in March '99, the price is $1500-$5000 over MSRP! DONOT GO TO Los Gatos Honda. They are teh greediest dealer and won't kept their promise. I first to order from them. When I placed deposit, they promised MSRP and won't force to buy anything (I guess they didn't know it will be such high demand!). When the van came (2nd one in the list) on late Oct, they installed leather ($3400!), Sun-roof ($2,500!) and request to add at least $1000 option they add on to the van. Of cause, those are dealer sourcing not OEM. I was questioning their promise and they said if you don't want it, there are more than 20 customers are waiting! The sale and manager just walked away with nose point to sky. I walked out the dealer right away. Later, I found out I am not the only one who was mistreat. One co-worker and his family had the same bad experience. Take my advise, steer off the Los Gatos Honda. Sorry for the long post.

The volume dealership will be the one that does not have any 2004 vans left on his/her lot.
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
    Hi, pluto:

I believe Capitol Honda is the largest Honda dealer in SF Bay Area. For one thing, their lot is huge. Anderson Honda is quite small by comparison.

That said, I am not sure a "volume dealer" would treat you any nicer when the vehicles are in high demand. During my quest for '01 Odyssey, I found Anderson to be fair and square. Others were like sharks waiting to take a bite at your wallet.

Let's face it, only dealers of luxury name brands would respect MSRP threshold and not go beyond that. Others are just free-market worshippers.
  • pluto168pluto168 Member Posts: 44
Thanks all for the inputs. Looks like Anderson is the winner (of my deposit.) (-: How do I get to a fleet sales guy, thru Costco?
  • cooldad24cooldad24 Member Posts: 163
No, you just walk in and ask for fleet dept. Once you get a rep from that dept, just tell them you got their name from internet. The fleet dept also in charge internet order.
