build 06/05 - have 1550 miles - shudder once at 52 mph around 300 miles on odometer - no problems since - no tsb upgrades - mileage in town 19. I tried an experiment on the highway this last weekend - locked in the cruise @ 1900 rpm, about 63, 64 mph - mileage jumped to 24.8 for a tankful. This is with only 1500 miles on the engine. Thats fifteen hundred not fifteen thousand. Still no service manual, chewed out gen sales manager at Southfield Chrysler today. Anyone reccommend oil weight for 1st oil change? I want to do it very very soon. Is factory oil synthetic?

Mine is a 2/05 build (purchased 5/05) Liberty CRD Limited 4x4. Was out of service for transmission wiring harness, PCM, and solenoid pack, for 24 days within 2 days of purchase. More recently, 3000 miles ago, out of service for 3 days for new EGR and flash. Now, out of service for 8 more days for transmission "overhaul". That's a lot for the first year. Other than these problems, mileage is good and it is a nice vehicle to own.

Does anyone have black smoke when flooring the liberty. I have noticed considerable smoke when I get on it. At times the car in back slows down. I guess they can't see ahead.

I had enjoyed 18,000+ trouble free miles. I made the appointment for the re flashes and before I got it in the check engine light came on ..... It was the EGR code . Its at the shop as I,m typing this . They installed the new EGR valve and did the re flashes but I had an issue with pitting on R/R brake rotor so they are replacing both. I brought donuts and showed them my weeping turbo to inter cooler hose. [very slight oil] They are changing them also. They promise my little girl will be home tomorrow :) I drove 300 miles round trip highway this weekend wife on board (under 70mph  ) It said 34mpg on overhead console. with the check engine light on. I will let you know how the repairs work out

When is DCX going to put diesels in North American cars (other than Mercedes)? Its time.
  • upiorupior Member Posts: 10
Reading this forum, looks like the biggest DCX mistake was to go with automatic transmission, instead of standard.

    I would agree.
Are there any european owners with the stick that can tell me how the clutch pedal assembly is set up on these?
If the trans fails again I would like to convert it.

2005 Sport, build 6/05 (have to double check), purchase 1/06, 4400 miles so far, no serious problems, many instances of the shudder at highway or freeway speeds. Had the latest TSB performed at about 2200 miles which seemed to reduce, but not eliminate, the shudder.

Hi! I bought the Lund, Avenger on eBay. It mounts with 3M double side tape and is a great fit.

    Good luck! LK :

Does anyone have black smoke when flooring the liberty

Everyone does. I think it is an over rich mixture caused by flooring it. Some think it is just cleaning out build-up in the exhaust, EGR valve and blow-by. I recently followed my wife and observed this. I had her step on it at every stoplight which was like asking a junky to take a hit. It produced black smoke at every start which supports the over rich mixture theory. However, it is much less than when new which supports the build-up blow-by theory.

Thanks. I want something that fits just right. I found one that said it will fit the Sport and the Renegade :confuse:
Sport has the shapely hood and the Renegade is tall and flat. Anyway, does it work well at keeping the bugs off of the windshield?

    Build 05/05

    Bought 09/05

    Total miles so far 16500

    EGR replaced twice

Dealer fill synthetic oil (Chrysler essential care coupons) every 6000 miles

Some transmission shudder at around 50 mph

Fuel economy is 20-22 mpg around town, 24-26 mpg on long trips

Fuel additive is Amsoil Diesel Fuel Modifer and Amsoil Cetane Boost (about 3 oz. per tank fill up of 15-18 gal)

Wrangler ST tires don't like to stick on rainy streets with occasional wheel spinning in two wheel drive mode (experienced one spin out at 60 mph- I now approach wet curves more cautiously)

I just picked up my new CRD - so far LOVE the thing. I did my homework before deciding to purchase, and asked the dealer to apply the ECM/PCM TSBs before I took delivery. Based on what I had seen on this board, I was surprised when the dealer told me that they would not apply the TSBs unless the problem showed itself. I've since contacted DCX, and they repeated the same line - no TSBs without a problem. So I have two questions: My CRD has a 3/06 build date - do I have to worry about the TSB, or is it late enough to already be at the proper firmware level? Secondly, how are you guys getting dealers to apply these things, given the stated policy?

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

2006 Sport, so far, no troubles. The local dealership took delivery of it in September '05 and I got it Feb '06. I get 23-24 MPG locally and 27-28 running long day trips. 4770 miles, uses no oil. Changed the oil at 2150 using Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 and A Mopar Oil :) Filter.

Mine is trouble free so far. Build date of 12-05. With all the threads out there to list troubles, why is it that so many folks can't read? This is a trouble FREE post thread!

modelaford.... Just drive the thing and enjoy it if problem come then take it to the dealer. There are just a handful of people that have problems with the crd maybe you are one that will never have problems. Remember some of us drive the crap out of this suv and beside the new ulsd fuel is around the corner. Just keep the oil clean and never use fram filters after that is heaven.

2005 CRD 05/05 build date. 20,360 mi same EGR as new. Not sure about the shudder. 500 mi rural intesrstate and 100 mi work commute in light city traffic. mpg 23-28 based on manual calculation. Some towing.

I just 1000 miles ago chance my oil, and soot concern me very much. I know that it means that the oil is working but I been thinking of a second filter. Presently I use a Trasko oil filter witch do a good job but I been reading of the FS2500 from filtration solution that claim the oil will be free of soot. The thing is very expensive, about $400.00 and the filter is about $30.00 and they claim that it should be replaced every 10,000 miles. My ?: is it worth it or not, is the soot (black, black, black) to be concern. What all of you think...........Thanks.

The soot is actually a form of graphite, which we all know is a lubricant for firearm actions as well as lock mechanisms. So, it actually helps lubricate the engine parts as long as it stays suspended in the solution. No worries.

bvcrd: There is the idea that if this were a gas engine oil, most of us would be in big trouble. However, as most of us have found out that in less than 300 miles the oil is pitch black. In fact some have changed the oil after only 300 miles. It would be nice if when we bought these CRD the dealer told new to diesel owners not to be concerned with black oil. If it were not for this forum I would not have known.

What is the deal with Fram filters? I've heard others say this too.....I've used Fram all my life on countless different vehicles, including one diesel, and never had a problem. Is STP any better? Fram and STP are the only ones I can find near my house.....dealer wants $12 for the original "made in Italy" one....is it worth it?

It isn't worth 12 bucks. I use a Napa Gold filter, sold in Napa auto pats stores and made by wix. Fram has been tested along with others recently and has found them to be sub-par. Cheap in construction. Do yourself a favor and don't use them anymore. My napa gold runs about 6 bucks.

Twocycle2, the following link to an engine oil filter study was previously posted:

I saved the link but do not remember who posted it originally. Like you, I used Fram in different applications without a problem. I now use WIX 51516 available at O'Reilly.

Any of these vehicles with a fairly large turbocharger (for the size of the engine) will experience this when flooring the go faster pedal. The turbo lag is the cause. The fuel can't be burned correctly because the air volume doesn't catch up immediately, until the turbo spins faster..Large generator engines these days are placing multiple small turbos on them instead of single (or double) large turbos to reduce some of this problem on start up under load.

Soot is tolerable and as long as oil and filter changes are at prescribed intervals, will not harm the engine. High percentages of soot and in larger size above 10 microns, can be harmful, if allowed to concentrate as a result of negligence. A centrifuge type filter can be used and many truck companies use these to remove detrimental solids such as soot. They are going many thousands of miles between changes. Look on internet for Spinner centrifuge filters for further info.

I get no smoke in normal driving and only a little in the following two cases:
    1) starting up the engine after a week or more without using it
    2) flooring the pedal from a stop

I am generally buying "premium diesel" and often using B20, so there's generally 5-10% biodiesel in my tank. I think both factors contribute to the little smoke I'm seeing. Both fuels should have higher cetane than basic US diesel, and biodiesel will have lower sulfur because the bio portion is 0.0 sulfur content.

I agree on the turbo lag concept, but I find that the variable nozzle turbo (VNT) on our CRD has very little lag. Starting next year you will probably see VNT of some form on all new diesels, as it's a cheaper and efficient way of accomplishing exhaust gas recirculation to minimize NOx emissions. I was just browsing the Cummins website and they have detailed brochures for their 2007 diesels with new emissions compliance, and all the midrange models have VNT's for both performance and emissions.

My dealership replaced the EGR last week and did a computer flash. The codes actually were 101,410,299. Everything seemed to go ok, my Liberty is running well, a bit smoother than before. I did have to wait one day for parts. What a relief, I guess the prayers worked.

totman: Not only are the CRD's too new, but they are soon to be obsolete. DCX will not make a diesel for 2007 and no one knows beyond that.

I swear you and I are the only people in Ohio who own Liberty Diesels.
  • nescosmonescosmo Member Posts: 453
Twocycle2.... You are better off using STP than Fram, construction on the STP will stand higher pressure and is better made; filter material is good but the length is short. If you change your oil every 3 to 5 thousand miles your are ok with the STP.
  • nescosmonescosmo Member Posts: 453
Twocycle2.... Check the factory replacement filter is like the STP in construction it look like is made by the same company.
  • winter2winter2 Member Posts: 1,801
DCX will not be offering a Liberty CRD in 2007 because the present engine cannot meet emissions. Misses by very little. The Liberty CRD will return in 2008, but with a totally different engine from Daimler and not from VM Motori.

I have a good reliable inside source at Chrysler who shared this with me.

The Grand Cherokee will have a Bluetec V-6 diesel for MY 2007.

This is my first Turbo so I have little experience with them. I am now at 16,000 miles on my 05 Sport (July )% build date) and have been noticing some abnormal noises coming from what I think is the turbo. First of all, is the Turbo located on the passenger side of the engine? That is where this noise "appears" to originate. Second the noise sounds like a muffled version of the noise our bicycles made as kids when we attached a playing card with a clothespin and let it clack against the spokes. Third, it only happens under load (going up a mountain at 2300 -2500 rpms when the turbo kicks in. Fourth, I get metalic loose rattle sound if I quckly back off the pedal and let the turbo spool down. I cannot seem to get the noise to reappear on flat ground probably because the vehicle accelerates so fast it doesn't stay under sufficient load.

Does this sound like a turbo going bad? My delima is that I know I won't be able to produce the laod needed to have the mechanic hear the noise unless he wants to go on a very long ride.

Anyone have anything similar happen or have any ideas? My thinking is to drive it until she blows or makes the noise on flat ground. Then they will have something to go on....

Maybe an exhaust leak or some other plumbing come loose.

Our diesel not new to Jeep. A smaller version of the liberty diesel was used in the exported Liberty.

" VM began its supply relationship with Chrysler in 1992, providing indirect injection engines for the Voyager.
In 2001... Chrysler chose to adopt our more modern direct injection, common rail engines. "

Turning 19,000 by the weekend. Going to Columbus, Ohio. I'm must be the 3rd CDR in Ohio. I haven't seen another one but the dealer here had (6) units for 2005 and sold them all. :surprise:
  • allan_jallan_j Member Posts: 10
Well I too am in Ohio and have a CRD. Hinckley Ohio.
6300 miles since March. Feeling a little shutter between 55 and 65. Oil in the CAC hoses. Runs OK . Trying to locate a dealer who WANTS to service this thing. I stopped by the dealer I bought it from and they also service and sell the diesel Volkswagon. They say the 6500 mile service is only an oil change. (I already changed it at 3000). Dealer 2 miles from me won't respond to my e-mail to set up an appointment. Good thing I can service myself but someday I'll need warranty work.
