I don't know how you go from what I write to your conclusions and judgments. I don't appreciate the post containing your personal determinations of what I think, what I was ready to do, and what you judge to be reasonable for me.
You have every right to judge that anything else but MSRP initially appears to YOU to be unreasonable. That is what I asked, and you're probably correct for the QX56. For how long, who knows. I welcome your thoughts on that too. I would not, however, expect someone to post what should be reasonable for me.
I said I was ready to buy. I didn't say I had to have a discount, just that there are reasons for getting one. If that's what you think, fine. Why post a contrary judgment and then state what I have not written to make your point? I was no longer ready to buy at that dealer after the salesman's response, period. Even if MSRP is what they have to get, there are ways to explain it. When I choose to look at another dealer the experience might be a little nicer. Maybe even hear, "Let me see if I can do a little something for you." Considerations of other then a discount and how much are factors, but that seems to be the sole basis of your unsolicited statement, '... ready to buy.' There are ways to deal with people to make a sale.
The QX56 may turn out to be a great vehicle. Then in six months it may still fetch MSRP. Personally, I'd feel better paying that then, rather then now when I know a whole a lot less and there's no track record.
To me any price now could be reasonable. That's why I asked for expectations and recent experiences. In responses I don't think strangers on these boards need be told what is unreasonable and what they really felt. I certainly don't!
I'm not sure that audible knocking is a reliable indicator that the fuel being used is sub par. I certainly wouldn't trust it in a new, under warranty car.
I think that the Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association in Chicago had a Tech Bulletin some years ago about the danger of preignition that was sub- audible.
Wdog and discounts. Car salesman get beaten up all the time, especially by high end customers who are verbally skilled and like to joust. Now that the salesman has something he doesn't have to push, he naturally becomes a little huffy when someone approaches him as they would a less desireable product. While his behavior isn't justifiable nor even productive, it is understandable.
The more that wdog parses his behavior the less credible it gets. Once you clear away the smoke, it becomes very clear. Let me outline it: he said he was ready to buy and while he didn't ask for a "discount" he wanted some concessions in some form or content. Then when rebuffed he says that given the uncertainties about the vehicle he would pay list in six months but not now. Somehow I don't think that the sales guy has wdog on his PDA to call in 3 weeks when he has an order cancellation and an end of month quota to fill.
to tell us as potential buyers that we are off base on a price, discount or anything else we can't have. But I'm sorry if I'm offended by a salesperson who condescends to me because I have the friggin' nerve to "ask". Those of you out there who feel the salesman has rights too won't get my money - ever. I am always kind, respectful and honorable in my car deals and inquiries. And it's my money. I refuse to spend it where someone makes me feel stupid. Period. And if that's ok with the salesperson, then we're both happy, right?
Share your beliefs entirely! A simple, "I think it best to not expect anything at this time with the QX56." would be an appreciated comment. Someone took the time to respond. Thanks for intelligent insight. We don't have to agree to be respectful.
Why blockislandguy's need to, "Clear the smoke...," to determine that someone went to a dealer expecting something. He's correct. Wasn't ready to immediately pay whatever they wanted and take whatever they had. Whether the added comment about the salesman, his PDA, and my phone number was to show further wit, make a joke, throw in a snide remark, or something else, it was made without consideration. BTW, I didn't leave my phone number.
I assume the sole purpose of most is to just respond and is reward enough. Sometimes we say more. I can't see the harm as long as it's in a kind hearted way. Posts that appear, to me, to be unsolicited, mean spirited, even containing psychoanalysis of another's motives, etc., I don't seem to notice at other sites. For me that would boards for the Tahoe, PFA, and Sequoia.
Posts that appear, to me, to be unsolicited, mean spirited, even containing psychoanalysis of another's motives, etc., I don't seem to notice at other sites.
The boards would disappear if the only posts were of the solicited variety. But, yes, we can safely drop the psychoanalysis and imputing motives - in fact, I insist! :-)
I drove the QX last week and the Denali the week before and while the Denali is not exactly the Escalade they share a great deal in common.
My wife and I both agree that the QX is the better SUV. Acceleration in town and on the highway were about the same, but the QX wins every other category in my humble opinion. Yes, the Escalade produces 345hp, but the QX's 315hp engine performs quite well from a standstill, while passing on the highway and I believe its torque rating is superior. I would rate performance a tie or possibly favoring the QX.
Safety: QX - side curtain airbags for all three rows - standard; NOT available on the Escalade. QX - better handling, steering "feel" than the Denali. QX - back-up camera and intelligent cruise control work well; I do not believe these are available on the Escalade or Denali. Overall, active and passive safety features appear to favor the QX.
Other PROs of the QX:
Bi-xenon headlights. LED brakelights. Comfortable seats (2nd row seats are heated and tilt back). Lots of legroom for 2nd row passengers. Huge storage space when 2nd and 3rd rows folded down. Looks like a truck, handles like a car - easily parked the QX in a tight parking space. Birds-eye view on Nav. system. Extensive "yellow-pages" information available on Nav. system. Subwoofer standard on powerful Bose stereo. XM or Sirius radio available. Power rear lift-gate. Liquid Onyx paint looks great (has multi-colored flecks/flakes that shine in the sun - have to see it to appreciate it). Storage galore throughout cabin. Wide running boards to step on and large grab handles for easy entry into cabin. Compass and outside temp. on overhead console above center rearview mirror so as not to distract when looking at rearview mirror. Second compass integrated into Nav. system. Softer look than Armada. Excellent fit and finish on demo. Smooth ride. Infiniti ranked #1 by JD Power and Associates for customer satisfaction in 2003 (heard through the grapevine - have not seen actual study - perhaps others can confirm?).
CONS of the QX (IMHO):
Analog clock placed too low for most to see on front console, however digital time readout on Nav. system. Low gas mileage, but basically the same as other vehicles this size. No turning lights/blinkers included on side of vehicle (e.g., Volvo, Audi) or integrated into rearview side mirrors (e.g., Denali/Escalade) as a safety feature. Sunroof leaked a bit while going through dryer portion of carwash - salesman claimed he had not properly shut it - reminds potential buyers to thoroughly check all options, accessories, and standard features before purchasing and driving off dealer's lot IMHO.
I would like to hear from others who have had a chance to test drive the QX56. Thanks.
I test drove a QX56 this weekend and noticed that the car is great overall with all the bells and whistles you could want and even power to back it up. The only problem I experienced, is an annoying vibration which resulted in a change in cabin pressure and a fluttering noise in my ears. I also test drove a Nissan Armada and experienced the same thing. Am I going crazy? Are other people test driving this car also experiencing this? I love the car but can't get past this problem. If this is indeed a problem, is Infiniti aware of it and are they in the process of addressing it? I need to feel comfortable about the engineering process first before considering to buy this vehicle. Thanks for your responses.
Yes, I agree, that noise is common with the sunroof open and change in "cabin pressure" is common when you close a quality sunroof.
With regard to the "leaking sunroof" in the QX I drove last week, I just spoke with the dealer and they checked it out immediately after I test drove the vehicle and found that a rubber seal needed to be stretched slightly and put in its proper place was the culprit and escaped the pre-delivery inspection which was rushed. It is now fixed and does not leak.
So I wouldn't wait on the QX due to a very minor tweaking of a small rubber seal in the sunroof. In fact, I wouldn't consider it a leak; one or two droplets of water hit the side of my face while going through the dryer portion of the carwash as the dryer pushed air directly down on the sunroof - not surprising that a drop or two of water was pushed through with a slightly loose seal. It is important to note that there was no leak during the wash or rinse phase when water was cascading down on the vehicle.
Anyway, I would like to hear from all those who have had a chance to test drive this potentially potent vehicle. Thanks!
It seems the QX56 has the same resonance issue as the Armada. I recommend anybody thinking of buying a QX56 to read the Armada board regarding resonance - especially a poster called chasmanz28 who is right in the middle of this issue.
I have an Armada that has the issue to a minor level, but I am prepared to live with it as the car is great in other ways. If it gets worse, then I will be joining an increasing band of people asking Nissan to do something drastic to fix it.
However, I test drove one Armada that was so bad that at 65mph the resonance hurt my ears and my wifes. It had no sunroof, the windows were closed, the road surface was normal smooth-ish highway, and there was no bad weather or winds. I can assure you that the people on the Armada board who are having trouble are not complaining about something trivial - there is a serious flaw in the car somewhere that can make it painful to drive for any length of time.
To cover another post, this is not something related to having one window open, or the sunroof open a bit. These do cause a similar effect in many cars, but this is a problem with everything shut, and cracking a window does not make the problem go away entirely.
Don't buy one without driving it first. If you get a "good" one, it appears to stay good. If you get a bad one, expect to talk to your service manager a lot. The Armada is a fine car which I enjoy, and I suspect the QX56 will be great, but buyer beware.....
Anyone out there hear a rumor about the Armada/QX56 coming with a locking rear differential in the near future. I want to get rid of my 1993 Range Rover, and I want a solid off road vehicle. I am leaning toward a new range rover, maybe the new discovery when it comes out in a few months, or the Armada/QX56.
I will probably have to wait until this fall to purchase. Anyone know when the 2005 will be available? Since the 04 was a late entry, will the 05 be late also? I don't expect ANY change, but perhaps the roof thing etc will be fully addressed.
I just had a test drive in the QX 56 and thought the vehicle was wonderful. No rumble on the freeway and we spent about 25 minutes cruising on the interstate. This is a big suv, however it has a tighter turning radius than my wifes I30 and handles parking lots easily. It accelerated nicely entering the interstate and was extremely quiet while moving in and out of traffic.
All in all I really liked the QX 56 and think Infiniti has put together a nice vehicle. I have been shopping for a new SUV for over a year and will probably purchase this one.
I30 has turning radius of 34.8ft. I35 has turning radius of 40ft. QX56 has turning radius of 41ft.
I like Qx56. It is a great SUV, but not that good. For a truck with 123 wheel base, 41ft radius is good enough considering most mid-sized sedans do 37~38ft. Previous I30 was outrageous at 35ft!
Just finished with corporate training where Infiniti had a Lincoln and a Cadillac here for us to test drive and compare in the comfort of our showroom. It's obvious that the QX is the better car when all three are parked side by side. Advantages over the Lincoln are: More horsepower, more torque, more efficient and reliable throttle response with drive by wire technology versus old fashioned cable, QX has five speed automatic transmission, Lincoln only four speed, towing capacity is greater, rear suspension functions better, steering column tilt is power on the QX- manual on the Lincoln, ignition location is more convenient on the QX, sunroof is one touch open and close on the QX only one touch open on the Lincoln, QX has more third row headroom, QX has larger door pockets, Rear under-floor storage compartment is large and has room for many items on the QX, 2nd row center console does not need tools to be removed on the QX, seatback mounted side airbags are standard on the QX - not available on the Lincoln, roof-mounted curtain side impact airbags are standard for all three rows on the QX- only covers front two rows on the Lincoln, QX stereo compatible for XM or Sirius Satellite radio, Lincoln only Sirius, QX has longer warranties, better fuel economy, standard Xenon headlights, memory programmable outside mirrors, steering wheel and seat position, longer wheelbase, lower curb weight, greater headroom in front, greater leg room in rear, more shoulder room in front, more shoulder in rear, more hip room in front, more hip room in rear. Heated rear seats are not available on the Lincoln. QX has more torque, five speed tranny versus Cadillac's four speeds, more towing capacity, AWD versus full time 4WD, rack and pinion steering more precise on QX compared to Caddy's recirculating ball, rear suspension is independent double wishbone compared to Caddy Solid Rear Axle, more storage and function in overhead console, QX has more storage and versatility in the front center console, QX has standard, easily removed 2nd row center console, all dimensions of 2nd and 3rd row are larger in QX, QX 3rd row fold flat easily, power lift gate with safety reverse not available on Caddy, rear under-floor storage not available on Caddy, roof mounted curtain side impact airbags standard on all three rows in QX not available on Caddy, Satellite radio on QX compatible with XM or Sirius, Caddy only XM. Brake Assist technology not available on Caddy, memorized steering wheel position not available on Caddy, QX has longer warranties, more valves per cylinder, better fuel economy, better turning diameter, lower curb weight and greater leg room in rear.
Really? The Expedition has a lot more headroom than the Armada I tried out. QX didn't look any different, in fact 3rd row head room is still very tight IMO.
I seriously doubt that's true, and if I'm right, who knows how reliable that list is?
Anyone know when infiniti dealers in the bay area expect to get their allocations? I am in the market for a new luxury suv (to replace my mdx) and I am very interested in the QX56.
For people with the resonance problem in their QX56, check post #1888 in the Nissan Armada forum. Most QX's shouldn't have this problem, since they probably would be built after the Nissan engineers fixed the adhesive issue.
Both Frontier Infiniti (at Stevenscreek) and Pleasanton Infiniti have one in their stock. Both are fully loaded at $55k. I know that from their websites. www.frontierinfiniti.com www.infinitiofpleasanton.com
Maybe you were as excited as me without reading his words carefully, and I quote, "We are currently working on a fix for this problem at the plant, and we should have one in place soon."
That means all that are on the market or in transportation do not have this problem fixed.
yes, the ones listed for Frontier and Pleasanton infiniti are the demo cars. I have already asked them. they won't sell the cars until they receive another one. thanks.
Dealers started receiving their cars today. You might be able to get one immediately with a little shopping, if you're willing to be open on color and options.
Please advise on here when the QX56 starts going under MSRP in each market. I'm waiting to get a decent deal since I'm in no hurry. I also want to make sure the noise issue (see above posts) is not a major problem. I plan a 1 hour test and same on the QC before I sign any paperwork...
My Lincoln has air conditioned seats, as well as heated seats. I don't see them on the Q, and am wondering if they are available? Having gotten used to them, in a very hot climate, I would hate to lose them now.
SO far I have only had one minor problem. It was a minor computer problem, the RPM did not reset and got stuck at 5x, when I reved it whent to 7x but was really at 2x. I went, they took a picture, reset the computer and if it happenes again they will just replace the computer. Other than that I love the truck.
I think overall the QX is a good truck, especially for the price in this segment. Nissan is putting more quality in their cars, and while the QX is beautiful it's also a very funny looking truck. I test drove on and was very pleased with it, and the engine has good power, very smooth. I did however notice a slight vibration coming through the steering wheel, and the ride was mostly smooth, but a few bumps I felt, not bad. I think the suspension my be a bit tight, but then that reduces body roll. The interior was fairly quiet, but could use more work, not bad though. I liked a lot of the features the salesman showed me. The QX has everything you could want, although the intellikey system would have been nice here, as well as a 300 plus watt Bose system as opposed too the 265 that comes in it. I don't get why Nissan would put those features in the FX, but not the QX, especially the high power Bose system, heck it's even like 320 in the Maxima??? The touch screen NAV is a matter of opinion, it comes across as nicer to have a touch scrren, but at the same time after prolonged use the scrren is more dirty as well as the area you touch in seems to go dull, and you find yourself pressing harder or more then once. I got a freind who has the LX and complains about the touch screen consatnt need of wiping off. Overall Nissan has done a great job, but the QX may need a tad more refinement, and I do feel that Nisaan could have destinguished the rear of the QX a lot more from the Armada. Overall I like the exterior design, but I think Nissan could have done a better job, I mean with the great looking designs of the FX, GX, 350z, Maxima, and the upcoming M35/45 you'd think the Armada and the QX would be better looking, but I'ts good enough.
ok,I've looked at SUV's of interest and took the QX56 out for a drive.Love it except for a resonance problem that I dismissed until reading a comment made concerning the Nissan version.I did put $1000 down having been lead to believe delivery would not be a problem.I want all-wheel drive and the second row bench seat. After signing it now appears the dealer cannot find a bench seat model.Seems Infiniti predicted Americans would want the captains seat. The dealer is not giving me hope for the next 45 days but I am off for a trip before that time.Watch for delivery problems!
Look around! Dealers have the trucks. There are some out there with the bench - awesome three-way split bench! Don't give up, the trucks are available.
The dealership I bought my QX56 from had a silver graphite AWD with a bench seat. I drove it home to see if it would fit in the garage, no problems with clearance I can even open the rear hatch without hitting anything. I have driven three different QX56's and bought one and have not experienced the resonance problems others have.I even made it a point to not have the CD or radio playing so I could target this phenomenon.
I have racked up almost 500 miles on the QX and love every mile. This is one impressive powertrain extremely smooth quick and responsive. Alas I have no rumbles rattles or vibrations to report. Do any other QX drivers know where I can purchase a hood protection film kit for the QX? Thanks!
glad to hear you're happy with your QX...How quiet is it about town and on the highway...i am down to either an infiniti or a lexus...but you gotta love the second row room in the QX...thanks!
Bobbio56, I also looked at the products from Lexus as well, and although I must agree the Lexus have the best interiors in the industry they are lacking in other areas. I would rate the quietness of the QX56 a little louder than the GX and LX however you have to take into account the throaty grumble from the awesome Endurance V8. Once you are under way and no longer accelerating you notice how quiet and comfy the ride is.
The biggest area that I found the LX and GX lacking is the engine compartment. There are V6 motors out that make alot more HP than their V8.
After driving the QX for awhile now I have found a few other things I like better than the Lexus. One is the power rear hatch and compared to the LX and GX a usable rear seat that folds flat. Also on a road trip with my daughter she wanted to switch the movie which was not a problem but in the LX you would have to crawl in the back to change out the DVD, hopefully while not driving. Just my opinion, you can't go wrong with either make.
I agree the Toyotas are underpowered. The Q on the other hand has a wonderful power train, even stronger than my Navigator. I just don't like the looks, inside or outside enough to switch. But it's a hellova truck, and way superior to the Sequoia functionally. IMO. YMMV
sorry to not have responded sooner...got a bit of the bug in thelast few days...I drove it and i agree...quiter than I thought it would be...esp. after trying an Armada....Time to make a decision...
Bobbio56, the CD changer for the Lexus GX 470 is located in the glove compartment, which again makes changing CD's on the move difficult at best. Just one more reason why I decided on the QX56.
I continue to rack up the miles with nothin but smiles!!! I found a place to install a Clearshield bra last week and also switched out the H3 bulbs in the fog lites with PIAA super plasmas. The difference is literally like nite and day.
No, I guess you could say the difference is like white and yellow. The stock bulbs being yellow and the PIAA having the blue/white lite they advertise.
Katana2, I too live in Overland Park and just got the call yesterday that our new QX56 we ordered will be in no later than April 30. I am curious where you got the Clearshield bra done and if you like it. Also considering the PIAA super plasmas so any info would be great! Thanks

1. At idle a noticeable (and for me annoying) vibration telegraphed through the steering wheel.
2. At highway speeds the wind noise was more than I would expect for a Luxury vehicle. Much more wind noise than my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
First two rows in QX56. First row only in Armada.

Also on a road trip with my daughter she wanted to switch the movie which was not a problem but in the LX you would have to crawl in the back to change out the DVD, hopefully while not driving. Just my opinion, you can't go wrong with either make.
I continue to rack up the miles with nothin but smiles!!! I found a place to install a Clearshield bra last week and also switched out the H3 bulbs in the fog lites with PIAA super plasmas. The difference is literally like nite and day.
I guess it's foggy a lot of the time where you live then?
