Even after removing packing shims, the noise I went under there after persists. I hear it if I go over a bump or if I hit the brakes. Sounds like something bouncing around loose once or twice. Can't find anything out of place. Was also thinking it might be something compressing in the suspension as when I tap the brakes the nose goes down, shock compress etc.. Similar to sounds others are experiencing??? And yes it has been getting colder. Could this be the cause?
1berdine - as far as topper, depending on what you are looking for, the Glasstite V2 was made with SD in mind, curves match, etal, nice shell but pricey, heard they one of the best though. That is what I am going with for new rig. Had A.R.E. on last one, it was very solid, no problems but like the looks of the Glasstite. As far as liner, I went with Line-X. Bottom line, depends on dealer, both Line-X and Rhino seem more or less comparable, quality of installation key. I prefer the pattern of the Line-X (little beads) vs the blotchier Rhino, but thats personal pref. Good Luck!
Just took possession of my Y2K F250 CC SB 4x4 V-10, 6 weeks from order to delivery. Have only 22 miles on so far. Can only describe this truck with one word...AWSOME... Having chrome fender molding, molded flaps and custom billet grill installed today. Can't wait to hit the road with it..
still no change of status. calling Ken tomorrow if no am change. it seems to me like the system has lost this truck (and it just might stay "lost" if no oil gets applied to the wheel). more than likely the truck has actually been built... but need to know for sure! note that truck was ordered 9/30 so there's not one reason the thing hasn't been built (especially after a 11/22 week of lock-in).
Looking for info on truck caps for superduty - have ordered F350 want to know what cap you suggest - locally we have Lakeland - this is in Wisconsin - Is there a preferred cap - I tried to locate info on Glasstite, Inc on web - no web page - looking for ideas - info on other accessories also appreciated- what does Brutus have on his truck - in a year or more looking at this site I see him as a main man - "He the man"
It is time for some action. It seemed that the system couldn't find my truck this morning, but this evening I'm back to the "your unit has shipped via rail carrier". Also my original build date was week of 11/29, it was pulled up to 11/22 some time in October and remained as such until I got the ship message on monday 11/29. Good luck, ...newman
I ain't the man. I've only been here longer than most, although I took about a six month hiatus earlier this year when I moved from Dallas back to Anchorage. Most of what I know about axle ratios, torque, etc., I've learned from this site and from the experience I've gained on my own since I took delivery of my truck last year. Many of the names that were most helpful to me when I started visiting this site aren't around as much anymore. cdean still pops in every now and then. He's got a lot of good technical knowledge and lots of hands-on experience with different makes of trucks. Rocles is still around, probably because he gets such a kick out of the [non-permissible content removed] for tat with some of the Chevy guys, like zbad.
As for the topper issue, I doubt I will be of much help. My topper is a 4000 pound 1999 10'11" Bigfoot slide-in truck camper. The retail is around $30,000 with the generator. I paid about $25,000. A little steep if all you are looking for is a topper.
I put on a Shur-Top "stealth" by Tri-Glas. Got the cap at a place near Toledo that I have dealt with in the past. I liked the flush windows and the cab height style. I have had caps on my last couple of trucks, and have had no problem removing them if I need to use the truck to haul bulk material. This cap was kinda pricey, but I have had shur-top before, and have been satisfied. This style has a rubber boot system with part glued to the back of the cab, and a corresponding flange on the cap to fit into the boot. The cap fits real tight to the cab, and looks very integrated. With this setup you don't need a front window in the cap, as it is sealed by the boot system.
By the way, got about 14.7 mpg on my trip to PA over the holiday, mainly going about 70 mph. 99 250 sd cc sb 4.3ls v10.
I found a 2000 Lariat sd/ps/4x4/lb on the lot of a dealer today. My question is what would be a fair neotiation price when these units are in short supply. I've read the previous posts about paying around $500 over invoice, but most seem to be for units that are ordered. Any luck getting that kind of a deal for an in-stock unit? I calculated the cost to be about $34,500 (before holdback) and was going to try around that....Thanks

The VOPC message changed today to as of 12/1 my truck has been built with ETA 12/20. Hope it doesn't get caught up in the Holiday shut down during transport. My guess is that it will go by rail to Dallas and carrier to Norman, OKlahoma. I'll keep y'all posted on its progress. 250 sd, cc, 4wd, sb, v-10, white over gold, lariat, 40/20/40 seat, premium radio, camper and off road pkg, etc.
If price is an issue (like it isn't...) Swiss Truck caps in Indiana makes a nice unit for the $. On my 99 F250 SD SB, I have a cabhigh, color matched with deep-tint sliders and screens on the side (two large dogs), and it ran me about $875.
My order is almost a repeat of yours (don't have camper pkg.). Did you order yours at Reynolds Ford in Norman? Mine isn't expected until week of 12/27 but if they call me when yours comes in I guess I can live with camper package!!!!!!!!!! I would have e-mailed this to you but you don't have an address in your profile. Guess I'll just have to suffer the wrath of 'viperle'!

Well i've had my truck now for almost one day and i must say im very impressed!! dark torreador red lariet 5.4lt eng simply incredible and plenty of power.I just want ot say thanks to the guy who wrote about the plastic gaurds wedged in the leaf springs,i went out this morning to see if mine have been removed, and they were still in place real simple to remove..for an f250 this truck rides almost as smooth as my car what an awsome truck!!real head turner..
Your e-mail address is private also, so--I ordered mine through Dubbe Ford in Dover NH. My son was the Sales Manager there at one time and I had an "in". Truck will be drop shipped to Reynolds (add $200). Son now works next door at Fowler's and can see when my truck arrives (so don't try anything). Went with camper package (and lots of other stuff) that I don't need - but then this is my dream truck. Ordered 9/15, built 12/1, ETA 12/20. Reynolds has a much larger allotment than Dubbe so hopefully your order will progress more quickly than mine. Can't wait for Chrismas!
Was going to have my bed sprayed (Line-X) last week but decieded to hold off for awhile. The dealer here also is a Pace Edwards rep, so I went there Wednesday to put a deposit on a roll top. I asked if he had any examples and he said "no" but as I was on the way out I noticed a S10 pickup that had a spray-in liner,,,, WHAT A MESS!!! BE VERY CAREFUL TO SEE THE DEALER'S PRIOR WORK AND GET SOME REFERENCES BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR BED SPRAYED!!! They can really hack your truck bad if they are new at this. (Does anyone remember the movie "The Blob"?) I asked what happened and he told me that he had just done the truck over again because of a moisture problem or something. He also said he had only been doing this for a few months. Like I said, what a mess!
Now for the rubber band(s):
Just happened to notice a rubber band on one of the lines under my front wheel well. I laughed and called a friend over to look at the quality of the assembly process. I joked about it and then looked on the other side, sure enough a matched set.
Just curious, does anyone else have the little extras on their Y2K trucks.
crazyelvis doesn't have to be concerned about the vopc anymore but rnewman does. called Ken today & he said they've had the invoice on the truck for 4 days! so much for timely vopc updates... it STILL shows "scheduled to be built week of 11/22 with ETA week of 12/6". Ken indicated we ought to have the beast in our hot little hands in around 10 days... exactly the time frame he stated when we ordered the truck. but... from crazyelvis's experience we'll just put a hold on that prediction for right now. the truck really doesn't have that far to travel (compared to most areas of the country) so any delays beyond 10 days or so is definite cause for suspicion.
so a lesson learned. if the vopc doesn't show what you think it ought to show (like if you NEVER get "locked" or scheduled)? call the dealer as the vopc updates do not obviously rise & set like the sun.
Thanks for the reply. I ordered more truck and options than I need but just turned 50 and decided to take a "Ride on the WILDSIDE". Let us know when it comes in so I can drooooooolllll.
I saw a little white disk on the very bottom of the springs when I looked under my beast. It looked liked they belong there. Maybe not. What do the things you all found look like and where on the springs are they??? The only plastic on mine was on the VERY bottom of the spring and it appeared to be disk like and was white. Thanks for info ya'll.
I thought this was a F250 SD TRUCK page....why do we care about an excursion review??? ....and let me review the review......the writer of that article is making way too much social commentary and obviously likes to toot his horn. About 90% of that article deals with things other than the excursion itself. And geeez.....gas milage....I was born in '68 but I can bet you that all those muscle cars didn't get the best milage either. What a bad review that was. Obviously the general public doesn't feel as this bonehead does....sales speak for themselves......So viperdude....post that on the excusion page cause we don't care!!
I have 1000 miles on my F250 CC V-10 and am now averaging just about 13 on mixed driving. It continues to climb very slowly as I drive . . .we'll see how long that continues. It could continue indefinitely as far as I'm concerned! I purchased an A.R.E. MX topper. Frameless, deep tinted glass. Perfect paint match. I get compliments all the time. $1150. Very happy!
....the black plastic "doo-hickeys" on the front leaf springs are on the 4x4 versions. They are in-between the two leafs, have "DISCARD" printed on them and are cheesely wrapped with black electrical tape. Anyway, they seem to be either shipping shims for the truck ride from the factory, or maybe come to the assembly line that way from where-ever they are made as a protector. Then again, these are just guess's...gee..wish I could use a "LIFELINE" and phone a friend at FORD who might know... ....we got down to about 17-degrees the other night, how about you?? ....mileage update.....11-MPG...mixed highway/city driving.
I am trying to decide wether to buy a f-250 powertroke or a 350 power stroke. I plan to pull a 29-31 ft airstream and would like a crew cab for family travel. I am interested to know if there is any real difference in the two models maximum towing weight. I understand airstreams are heavy trailers. I have read in other conferences that 350's may have a better resale value I plan to get a lariet package in 4 wheel drive. (I also do a lot of hunting in the swamps of south Georgia) Any advice will be appreciated.
adubahbi I was very happy dealing with Fred McNeice at Downs Ford in Toms River, NJ, earlier this year. Very straightforward, INV + 2%. He's a fleet dealer (our ambulance chassis come from him) and seemed to have allotment (and access to fleet only options). They have a website www.downsford.com. I ended up making the two hour drive there after finding that the local (Flemington) folks didn't have allotment.
paul1 My truck has rubber bands around the brakelines too. Also at several places inside the engine compartment. Must be a shortcut in the installation process.
crazyelvis, gossamar could the white plastic in the springpack be something like teflon to quiet the ride? (I'm already in bed, so I'm not going out to check my truck right now.) On my old truck, when I had it up on a lift with the axles hanging, I stuck little slivers (2"x6"xVerythin)of teflon between the leafs and it quieted the off-road ride considerably. They actually mostly stayed in the pack (although I would recenter them each year.)
now that it's known that our beast has been built I can return to other issues. the limit on the SD (GCWR) is 20k. note also that the config does not matter. note also that bumper pull is limited to a load of 10k regardless of the config as well (you can pull more with a fiver setup... see my many posts in the past in regard to this issue). there are many issues that you need to resolve b4 ordering. here's a few: determine your primary usage for the vehicle. if it's 4 wheelin, forget dually's. their primary purpose is to increase the in bed load carrying capacity & add a bit of stability when pulling or hauling. if you intend to pull or haul heavy loads a lot, you really need one of the beefier engines (v10 or psd). remember that for every option you add, you also add some weight. this added wait subtracts from what remains available for hauling. example: the CC option knocks off 600# of hauling capacity. the psd knocks off another 500# or so. what happens here is that a standard cab F250 with NO options (that would otherwise add weight) will actually give you the greatest "usable" load capacity. the downside of this is that the stock engine may not be large enough to make you a very happy camper while you're hauling all that extra stuff around. we have a 30 foot airstream fiver that is going to be "pushing it" as our config is PSD, 4x4, CC, etc.. all pretty heavy stuff. in fact, that coach could easily overgross the truck because it sports a 5K differential between empty & max gross vehicle weight (it weighs 9.5k empty). add a in-bed fuel tank & we also add an additional 600 pounds of fuel as well so the weight can get up there pretty quick. if you do exceed the max gross a little (Brutus does that with his camper) this does not mean that the truck is going to immediately "fall apart". but... you need to be more conservative with your driving style. the primary limitation is probably going to be the brakes if you're really over the GCWR by a wide margin. Handling in general will gradually worsen as limits are exceeded by greater values. just common sense stuff. luck with your choices & hope this helps.
I am very calm....thanks for the concern....The idiot who reviewed the excursion wrote about it like it was supposed to be a mercedes or something. If it is based on the F250 line...which I know it is....It is basically my F250 CC with a topper over the bed and an extra seat. It would seem to me that it would have the same ride and handling and noise .....blah blah blah....as an F250 truck. So what was he expecting....Would I buy one for $40000??? NO.....I just thought the writer was way to impressed with himself and his "so called" ability to be witty....which he was not! Plus all of us who are buying or have bought an F250 don't expect it to be like a "light duty" truck which now adays ride like a lincoln towncar. I can tell the difference between my 97 F150 SC and my 00 F250 CC. But I expected the difference in going to the Heavy Duty line of truck. I am extrememly happy with the F250....I don't care about the gas milage....I LOVE the V10....and who cares if it takes me 2 1/2 lanes to make a U-Turn??? Everyone else better get the hell out of the way....ha ha.....Oh well....just saying that although the excusion is based on the F250 the segment of people in the market for the excusion...soccer moms and people who just have to have the latest thing ....might not like the ride and other stuff...but those of us who own the SD trucks know what we were getting into...... aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh....typers cramp!!!! Happy Holidays everyone.....
They test a 4x4 V-10 and slap on the 4.30 l/s and complain about the mpg? If mpg is a concerned, go with the 2wd 5.4L with 3.73. Still, I think they said they got 12.7. Not bad for a big 4x4 SUV with a V-10 4.30 combo. And they complained about the size and maneuverability? Ford makes many other smaller, easier to maneuver SUVs.
That's the first totally negative article I've read on the Excursion. The person obviously had a chip on their shoulder for either Ford or big SUVs. It's all about selection. If you don't need something as big as the Excursion, you can get an Expedition or an Explorer, and Ford is adding another super-mini SUV to it's line-up that will be a two door and actually looked closer in size to a car. They're also adding the Explorer Sport-Trac. I saw a nice picture of the Sport-Trac with a little write-up in one of the snowmobile mags I bought a couple of weeks ago. That thing will sell like hotcakes. One size doesn't fit all, so give the customer a bigger selection. The Excursion is just one vehicle in the Ford SUV fleet.
Ford does the same thing with their pickups. They've got the largest number of pickup combinations by far. Chevy does have one option that Ford doesn't have, though. Ford doesn't offer the third door option on their Supercab models.
stenson,
I answered your question in the other topic area you posted in, but here is a recap. It's basically a repeat of what lewac mentioned. For conventional towing (not fifth wheel), the F-250 and F-350 have the same 10,000 max tow rating.
The fifth wheel tow ratings are higher and can be as high as 14,000+ pounds depending on what options you choose for your truck. Generally, the more options, the lower the tow rating. The F-250 has a slightly higher fifth wheel tow rating than the F-350, but like I said, they both have the same conventional tow rating.
As lewac also mentioned, the major advantage of the F-350 over the F-250 is the GVWR which is the weight of the truck and everything in it and in the bed. The GVWR is an important factor if you have a slide-in cabover pickup camper or haul a lot of heavy stuff in the bed regularly. The GVWR of the F-250 is 8800 pounds compared to 9900 for the F-350 and 11,200 for the F-350 dually.
As I think I was the first of our group to discover the "Spring Things", let me clarify again what we're talking about. Front leaf springs on 4x4s come from the factory with black plastic wedges, about 8"L x 4"W x 2"H, taped in place with black electrical tape. They have the word "DISCARD" molded into them. I don't believe you'll find them on 2x4s as that vehicle doesn't have the solid axle and the leaf springs of the 4x4. They obviously don't belong and I'm upset that mine is not the only truck to have these missed during "Prep". I've called the dealer and insisted that they re-prep my truck from start to finish. Who knows what else they might have skipped! I've got a friend with a 99 Dodge 2500. He said left his chassis grease fittings factory dry when they delivered his truck. Amazing!!
The beast has finally arrived. I'm going to pick it up from the dealer at 900 am. I'll probably break every speed limit getting there. Will let everybody know later what it's like. John
....Good plan about taking truck back...let us know if anything "else" might be forgotten. I plan to call my dealer within the next few days to ask about the squeaks. I will venture out to the garage after breakfast to look under the truck for any chassis grease fittings that might help eliminate these cold weather squeaks.... ...by the way...how did you get yours out in one piece?? I destroyed them in trying to get mine out as they were wedged in REAL good between the leafs..
According to VOPC my truck arrived at Titus-Will Ford last Friday. I was able to get off work early enough (before the dealership closed) to take a quick peek Thursday night! Yep, they had it. But still had not been able to prep the vehicle or install any of the extra options ( ie line-x bed-liner, canopy, mud flaps and billet grill). I am anxious to say the least!!! and will call to find out what the hold up is - today.
Hopefully I will join the glorious ranks of the "Haves" instead of the "Have nots".
Crazyelvis: Just a note - In 1968, true muscle cars got 10 mpg or LESS - but I can remember gas at .23 cents a gallon (with a six pack of cola if you filled up). So nobody really cared. GEEZZ- I remember when I said to myself " If gas ever gets above .75 cents - I WILL WALK"---- Yea Right!!!
Well, ours is in too. Less than 8 weeks from order to delivery and with the V-10 that others seem to feel has caused delays. Glad to read the post about the crew cab V-10 getting 14.7 in PA, some of the recent posts about 8-10 mpg were making me nervous. I expected to do about as well as the 93 4x4 we traded in (351 engine that got 14 consistently). FWIW, we are having a Glasstite Targa painted F1 red..ours was $1095 and included carpeted headliner. Now to remove the "4x4" decal so I can add a ju-u-st a lit-tle pinstriping....
I only had 350 miles on the truck when I found the wedges. They came out with little effort, but I'd barely been over a bump in those first miles. They must not have had the chance to get wedged in tight.
tmat, I've probably got the Superduty setup that gets the worst mpg of any (99 F-350 V-10 4x4 dually with the 4.30 auto trans), and I average 9.5-10 city/hwy mix and 11/5-12 hwy. All indications are that the 2000 models get more mpg. If you're getting a 2000 non-dually with the 3.73, you should be able to easily add 2mpg to any of my figures, maybe more.
Viperlie,
As far as the weight, I haven't found anywhere that shows the curb weight for each Superduty combo. Most weigh between 6,000 and 7,000 pounds. I took my truck to the scales and it weighed 7,100 pounds with a full tank of gas. On the other hand, I've heard of people with diesels and similar setups weighing about the same. It was my understanding that the diesel weighed 700 pounds more than the V-10. The best thing to do would probably get everyone who has weighed their truck to post their setup and the weight.
The 2000 Trailer Life tow ratings are in their current issue. If you don't want to buy the mag, I think they will eventually print them separate. They are handy to have around. You can find out how much an certain options weigh (such as Crew Cab, 4x4, dually) by seeing how much the tow ratings drop when the option is added. You can also see the difference when you change axle ratios.
I am almost ready to order a 2500SD SC V10 SB and have a couple of questions that I haven't found conclusive answers to: 1) Is the back seat in the Lariat leather or vinyl? I have seen contradictory posts on this subject and am confused. 2) Does the Lariat OH display have a readout for outside temperature as well as its other functions? 3) Will the 3.73 axle handle a 10000# max loaded fifth wheel or will I regret not ordering the 4.30? I am trying to balance performance and gas mileage while not towing.
I am about ready to pull my hair out deciding which of the big 3 trucks to buy. I like the Ford SD the best overall but Dodge and Chevrolet have their good points as well. Too bad nobody makes a hybrid truck that incorporates the good features of each manufacturer(Fodgeolet). That would make it easier to decide. Thanks Jerryg
Ya that is true....about the gas price....I don't know what everyone was paying in diff. parts of the country last year....but here near Tampa, Fl I was paying in the low 80 cent range and even for about a week one station was 77 cents. Now I am paying $1.25.... Hopefully it will go back the other way after the first of the year...Plus a question while we are talking about gas....I don't think the tank on my truck is a 29 gallon. I was on pretty much empty today....the fill light was on and the trip puter said I had 33 miles til empty. I filled up and it stopped at 20.3 gallons...I squeezed the trigger a couple of times and maybe put another 50 cents in. So less than 21 gallons total. That does not seem right. The dial on the dash read over full. This is not the first time I have noticed this either......I thought that the short bed trucks were supposed to have the 29 gallon tank....I think mine is a 25 gallon...MAYBE!! Anyone else with this situation?
I found that when I fill up at a station with a good fast pump, I can't fill nearly as much. I think the neck on the SD must be huge because this makes a big difference. I put over 27 gallons in my first tank with the slowest pump I've ever seen, but normally I am lucky to get 23. Hope this helps.
Porky, My Baby was delivered at Titus-Will, but I actually bought her from military car sales while overseas.
To all of you waiting, you will not be disappointed!
The first day with the beast has been great, everything looks good and works great, love that C D player ! Drove a little over 300 mi today. I filled the tank up after 200 mi and was a little disappointed with mpg, only figures out to about 15mpg with the PSD in a F 350 4X4 DRW Crew Cab With 4.10 gears I am hopeing that mpg improves after break in time.also got a Stockland camper shell orderd today, now I have to wait about 3wks for that to come in, and I thought I was through waiting. Everyone with duallys, Did your trucks come with body side moulding ? I saw anouther F 350 at the dealer when I got mine that had moulding on it but it had SRW I thought thay all had it
Well picked up my 350 from the dealer yesterday. I couldn't pick it up Friday because a storm closed the interstate between me and the dealer! (If its not one thing its another.) Fortunately things cleared up Saturday. I can't believe how nice this truck rides and how much power the PSD has. Hills on which my old truck couldn't maintain its speed are barely noticeable. By the way, the dealer had the Line-X sprayed in before I picked it up and it looks great! Got it from the dealer for $360 vs $450 from my local Line-X or Rhino dealers. I plugged it in last night in the garage so it wouldn't get too cold. Note: the lowest clearance in my garage (part of the opener) is 7'6". I had no trouble pulling in with the roof clearance lights.

On my old truck, when I had it up on a lift with the axles hanging, I stuck little slivers (2"x6"xVerythin)of teflon between the leafs and it quieted the off-road ride considerably. They actually mostly stayed in the pack (although I would recenter them each year.)
aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh....typers cramp!!!!
Happy Holidays everyone.....
Since you are very knowledgeable with the SD, can you (or someone else) tell me what is the dry weight of the:
1. 2WD CREW CAB
2. 2WD SUPERCAB
THANKS
John
...by the way...how did you get yours out in one piece?? I destroyed them in trying to get mine out as they were wedged in REAL good between the leafs..
TO ALL: HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
FWIW, we are having a Glasstite Targa painted F1 red..ours was $1095 and included carpeted headliner. Now to remove the "4x4" decal so I can add a ju-u-st a lit-tle pinstriping....
Viperlie,
As far as the weight, I haven't found anywhere that shows the curb weight for each Superduty combo.
1) Is the back seat in the Lariat leather or vinyl?
Thanks

Porky, My Baby was delivered at Titus-Will, but I actually bought her from military car sales while overseas.
To all of you waiting, you will not be disappointed!
