Placed a deposit on one today that will arrive by the end of the month. Has roof rails, alloy wheels, daytime running lights, 3rd row seat, and floor mats. $23,300 +50 doc fee +tax/registration. :)

daileyad - looks like you did well. Below are the invoice prices (minus TDA) from Edmunds.com for the RAV4 you describe. Depending where you live, TDA could be as much as $500, which would put your buying price right at "invoice".

    4x4 base 4cyl $19,931.00
    Freight $685.00
Dealer Holdback (2% of base MSRP) $453.00
    Wholesale Financial Reserve $227.00
    TDA $0.00
    TH Third Row Seat $752.00
    DR Roof Rack $176.00
    AW 17" Alloy Wheel $448.00
    RL Running Lights $32.00
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set $126.00
TOTAL INVOICE $22,830.00 (not including TDA)

TDA here is $419 according to the dealers. So we came in right around $100 over invoice. I am happy, but it took a lot of work!

    Thanks a bunch

devenp06 - you didn't state it but I presume you're talking about a 4 cyl. If that is true, here's the invoice costs from Edmunds.com which do not include any TDA charges (varies by region anywhere from $200 - $500).

    4x4 base 4cyl $20,611.00
    TDA $0.00
    Freight $685.00
    DR Roof Rack $176.00
    AW 17" Alloy Wheel $448.00
    RL Running Lights $32.00
    WL Wheel Locks $65.00
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set $126.00
    MF Mud Guards $80.00
    28 Shift Knob $60.00
    TOTAL INVOICE $22,143.00

Without the CF, MF and 28, you're at $21,877 invoice so your deal is slightly below invoice at $21,821. If you can get them to throw in the CF, MF and 28 for free, that's even better!

I have found this forum extremly useful in researching price I should pay for this vehicle. The one I am interested in is metallic silver and I believe the options package is F (based on Toyota website). The invoice price of this car is $28,250. I was offered this at invoice price in the SF bay area and he said he would throw in the ipod cable (which he said was $12). I left and went to another dealer who offered to sell the same car at invoice price of $28,250 + $400. Told him about the other offer and he said he could probably match it but would need approval etc. and was reluctant to throw in any freebies.

Went back to the 1st dealer by email and offered to buy the car at invoice if he threw in the ipod cable, wheel locks and mud guard for free. They accepted the offer. Planning on buying this weekend.

    Decent deal?

Congratulations Mischa!! How do you like it? I'm still waiting on my loans, but hope to get a Rav 4 before the end of next month. :)

    Folks,

I just purchased an 08 Limited last night, and pulled off a heck of a deal. DO NOT be afraid to negotiate, make an offer, and get up to leave the dealership if they do not meet your terms...You need to do your home work when buying a car and be prepared to play hardball...The economy is tough right now, and there are MANY hungry dealerships.

    My RAV4: MSRP: $29,374
    Invoice: $27,042
MY price: $26,500 plus tax, lic, and doc fees

    West Covina, Calif Toyota: James/Andrew

That's right, $542 IN BACK OF INVOICE, and you can do it too. I DID NOT finance the purchase through the dealer either... In addition to this deal, I had (3) other internet managers call me to say they would go $300 in back of invoice...Some internet managers wouldn't negotiate and their prices were, from $500-$750 OVER invoice via phone conversation.

I didn't purchase a dog color either. Black with Ash interior, and 11 miles on the OD.

DO NOT be afraid to be a jerk if need be. Be firm, stay focused, and stick to your guns. Note, yesterday was April 12th, it was not the last day of the month. :D

Good luck to all of you!

    Sincerely,
    JH Sandy

Watsac, thanks for your input. Your posts are all very helpful.

I'm back to report my case. Finally, we got another RAV4 with two more options (GN and WL) from another dealer. The final price is $24000+TTL, and we didn't finance through them.

    Good luck to everyone.

I could use a little help making sure I am on the right track with pricing for the RAV4 I would like to buy.

Looking at Edmunds, the MSRP of the vehicle I would like to purchase is 30,934 and invoice is 27,642 (includes destination). There is no TDA listed. Based on what I am reading the 3% holdback of the MSRP would be calculated as follows:

    30,394 - 685 (destination) = 29,709 X .03 = 891.27

If I then take the total invoice price above of 27,642 - 891.27 (holdback) the total dealer cost would be 26,750.73. Is that correct?

If that's the case and I agreed to a price of 27,750 the dealer would earn a $1000 profit on my sale.

I'd appreciate it if I could know if this is accurate. I'm happy to provide more details if it would be helpful. Thank you very much!
  • jsandy1jsandy1 Member Posts: 2
    Hi:

My offer for the vehicle as listed would be: $27,150 plus tax/lic & doc fees. This is approx $500 in back of dealer invoice. Destination charges are a dealer pass through and can't be avoided...TDA in my area is $410.

Don't be afraid to play hardball...If that means walking out of the dealership, then do it...They'll chase after you !!

    Good Luck !
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
buck0086 - one minor clarification. Dealer holdback on TOYOTA is 2% of the MSRP for the base price only without options or destination charges. Wholesale Financial Reserve is 1% of that same number. So your logic is accurate but you need to modify the MSRP amount to be only the base price.

Also, I would NOT offer the dealer an automatic profit of $1000. I would start at what you have calculated the "real" invoice price to be and let the dealer take it up from there. Remember, he will do everything he can do keep the holdback and reserve. Plus he will want to work his TDA into the deal. All of that could be as much as $1300. But make him earn it. If you give him $1000 of it right away, that's making it too easy on him.
  • pk12pk12 Member Posts: 7
This is the vehicle I am trying to buy. But how do you come to your $100 over invoice conclusion?

First, why is your base invoice is lower than the base invoice of $20,611 according to both Edmunds and Consumer Reports? Does it vary by location? I live in Washington state.

Second, you included Holdback into the invoice? That should not count toward dealer cost, it is money the dealer receives back from Toyota after the sale. It is part of their profit.

To me you paid $500 over invoice, assuming your base invoice of $19,931 is correct.

    4x4 base 4cyl $19,931.00
    Freight $685.00
DELETE>>>> Dealer Holdback (2% of base MSRP) $453.00
    Wholesale Financial Reserve $227.00
    TDA $0.00
    TH Third Row Seat $752.00
    DR Roof Rack $176.00
    AW 17" Alloy Wheel $448.00
    RL Running Lights $32.00
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set $126.00
    TDA $419
Total Invoice = $22,796 (with TDA without holdback)

    You paid $23,300, a difference of $504.

This is the same quote I keep receiving from Internet Managers without haggling -- $500 over invoice, where invoice includes: base invoice, options, destination, TDA and gas. For some reason, one quote left out the financial reserve and apparently built it into TDA for a $478 fee.

So, does this mean my quotes are good? $500 over invoice as stated above?

    Thanks
  • pinkrunnergirlpinkrunnergirl Member Posts: 2
I just bought one and I paid 18300 for a 2004 RAV4 L AWD that came with a lot of extra features.
  • daileyaddaileyad Member Posts: 20
When I say invoice with Toyota I am talking about what Edmunds calls the invoice. This includes the Dealer Holdback and Whsl Financial Reserves which is where the $20,611 come in. Without haggling, the internet dealers were offering $500 over invoice but you have to be careful what they're calling invoice. Are the dealers actually telling you what the invoice and actual price is or are they just saying $500 over invoice and you don't know what that number is? Everyone I dealt with included all of the above costs as part of the invoice so the invoice for my car would have been $23,249. Thus $500 over invoice would have put the price at $23,749. In reality I got it at $51 over what toyota calls invoice at $23,300.
  • pk12pk12 Member Posts: 7
Thanks for responding so quickly, I am getting better quotes as I type!

The dealer are showing me their invoice. It starts with the same base invoice that Edmunds and CR report, adds options (at invoice) and destination, TDA, and gas.

Here is the one I just received.

    Base Invoice $20,611

    Options
    50 State Emissions 0
    Tonneau Cargo Cover 112
    Roof Rails and Crossbars 176
    17” Steel Wheels 96
    Daytime Running Lights 32
    Cargo Floor Mats/Cargo Mat 126
    Options $542
    $21,153

    Destination Charge ... ...............$ 685
    TDA ................................... $ 478
    Gasoline . ............................. $ 10
$22,326 * THIS INVOICE DOES NOT REFLECT THE DEALER'S ULTIMATE VEHICLE COST IN VIEW OF $ 453.00 RESERVE AND $ 226.00 WHOLESALE FINANCE RESERVE WHICH ARE RETURNED TO DEALER AND ANY REBATE, ALLOWANCE AND INCENTIVE, WHICH ARE PAID TO THE DEALER.

I figure the dealer stands to earn the $250 plus $453 holdback and I guess also the $226 financial reserve. From talking to an independent dealer with no vested interest, he says dealers here never give up their holdback.

Thanks for your advice! I might buy tomorrow.
  • pk12pk12 Member Posts: 7
    watsac,

the itemized list in your post includes alloy wheels, not steel wheels as devenp06 stated. The difference between those two is $448 - $96 = $352.

But have you found dealers to exclude TDA from their invoice? This has not been the case for me. If you add TDA to this, the quote can still be around invoice with TDA considered part of invoice.
  • pk12pk12 Member Posts: 7
    Daileyad,

I am learning more as the day goes on. Thankfully, I have not committed to an anything yet.

You started with a base of $19,931 = (Edmunds/CR invoice $20,611 - holdback $453 - Whsl Fin Res $227) because Toyota builds holdback and whsl fin res into their base invoice. So in your itemized list you were adding those two back in to get to what dealers show as base invoice $20,611.

    So your itemized list again:
    4x4 base 4cyl $19,931.00
    Freight $685.00
Dealer Holdback (2% of base MSRP) $453.00
    Wholesale Financial Reserve $227.00
    TDA $0.00
    TH Third Row Seat $752.00
    DR Roof Rack $176.00
    AW 17" Alloy Wheel $448.00
    RL Running Lights $32.00
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set $126.00
TOTAL INVOICE $22,830.00 (not including TDA)

Now including TDA of $419 as was stated puts Total Invoice to $23,249.

The quote was for $23,300 which is only $51 over invoice TDA included, and using the manufacturer-inflated "base" invoice with Holdback and Whsl Fin Res built in.

That does seem like a good deal. I have had the largest dealer in my area let me walk out the door not willing to best $500 over invoice calculated this way. The best I have managed so far is $250 over invoice.
  • daileyaddaileyad Member Posts: 20
Your best bet is to get in touch with the internet managers at quite a few different dealerships. My best prices weren't coming from the largest dealerships which suprised me. You can contact them through toyota's website to start the ball rolling. I would then call all of them that respond and ask for their best price (make sure you're talking real numbers so they can't pad the invoice). Talking to them should give you an idea of who is more willing to negotiate. Negotiate them over the phone as well as you can. Then, if you think you have your best price and you're happy with it, take it to the dealership where you'd actually prefer to buy and see if they'll match it. My guess is they will if you have the concrete numbers and they know you'll walk out and buy at another dealership. Especially since its coming to the end of the month.

Is this the right anlysis for what would be a reasonable starting point?

Adjusted Invoice (i.e., edmunds invoice minus holdback and wholesale reserve) 21720
    Destination 685
    Holdback 494
    Wh. Reserve 247
    TDA 500 (est)
    AW 17" Wheels 352
    DR Roof Rack 176
    CF Mats 126
    TO Tow Prep 128
    CD Tonneau Cover 112
    RL DRL 32
    Total Invoice 24572

Would a fair starting offer be for 23831 which is the total invoice minus the holdback and reserve?

Also, do most dealers insist on preserving the entire TDA charge or are the willing to compromise that part of the invoice?
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
kbatik - I haven't confirmed your invoice numbers but you logic is correct and, if your math is correct, I believe your number is a fair starting point. It's always better for you to let the dealer counteroffer with a higher price then for you to do the same with a lower price. As for the TDA, it is my experience with the dealers here in MD that they will always preserve the TDA. In fact, they also work very hard to also preserve the Holdback and Fin Reserve. Just remember you hold all the cards so walk away anytime you’re not comfortable because there is ALWAYS another car and there is ALWAYS another dealer.

Please tell me how bad I got it in the you know where. Went this AM to Toyota in NJ.Looked at Rav4 limited 4X4V6. Showed me a demo with 5000 MI with remote starter, satellite ready Three mounths free, blootooth, security system, special mirror. Also, LA,SR,EJ,HD,CF,TO,RL. I had a trade, was doing great haggled to what I thought was 27000 OTD...he turns around and put my 2000 at the end so now its 29,000 OTD...I'm in shock he says I knew it, and I just fell apart...I signed the paper, Then the finance guy puts me with Toyota for 7.74% and says I have to wait 3 mounths before I can refinance with someone else at a better rate...is this true? My credit score is considered excellent I know I screwed up, but how bad...was this a terrible price.Any recourse?
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
jacky908 - you may have done better than you think.

    Here's the "invoice" prices:
    4x4 LTD V6 $24,405.00
    Freight $685.00
    TDA $500.00 (estimate)
    LA Leather Seats $840.00
    SR Moon Roof $720.00
    EJ Radio $480.00
    HD Heated Seats $352.00
CF Floor Mats (dealer Installed) $126.00
    TO Tow Prep $128.00
    RL Running Lights $32.00
    TOTAL $28,268.00

Not sure what taxes and tags cost in NJ you but if you got OTD for $29,000, that's not too bad considering invoice is $28,268. On top of that, it sounds like you got some dealer installed options (remote starter, mirror, etc).

Only negatives, I see are the 5,000 demo miles and the 7.74% interest rate. I just did a deal in MD for 5.25%. Times are tough and banks want to make you a loan. If your credit is good, they will bend over backwards to give you a good interest rate. I think the 3 month wait is BS; you should be able to refi as soon as you can get your hands on the title. In MD, that takes about 2 weeks.

    Folks,
Did not get a chance to say thanks.

pk12 is correct I had listed 17inch Steel wheels, but after adding TDA it came out the same.

    I got it for 21821+taxes+title+doc fee+$15gas

    Base Invoice: $20611
    AA $96
    DR $176
    CF-R $126
    MF- $60
    DRL $32
Tonneau Cover+net $112 (has to give up WL and 28 for this)
    Destination charge $685
    TDA $399
    Factory Hold back -$453
    --------------------------------------
    Total $21844

The delaer said MF is not factory installed and dealership usually add $150 to $200
for its installation. Got that waived off.

    hi,
I'm a newbie to this forum, but it looks very informative.
Do you guys have any opinion about Fitzmall?

The internet price is lower than invoice.
Is it a good place to buy a new car?

My current address is in Arizona.
In that case, do I need to pay the tax?

    Any comments will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hi,
I bought a new V6 limited 4WD (no leather) 2 days ago at $300 below "invoice". I will post my figures soon, but briefly, I obtained a true invoice of the vehicle I bought in Michigan.

In addition to the Edmunds invoice, the invoice sheet included the TDA (I think it is a legitimate charge). The invoice price included about $450 as "dealer holdback" and about $240 as wholesale residual or some similar term. These items were clearly listed on the invoice price sheet. The final invoice price was about $26930 I think.

The dealer initially offered me a quote of $27030, ie $100 over invoice. I had contacted a few dealers via email, and stated that I would buy from the one with the best online quote. He also stated there would be an extra $200 documentation fee.

I asked him to reduce his price, and he agreed to waive the doc fee, and agreed to $300 below invoice. The whole transaction took 15 mins. It was very painless, and I think I could have gotten even lower. I only paid state tax and license and registration.
Anyways, I think I got a good deal. I would suggest that car dealers are pretty willing to deal in the current (Michigan) economy, so keep trying to get a price below invoice.

I was wondering if I could get a little guidance? It looks like the Retail on a Sport 2WD is $22,825 plus the freight charge of $735 equals $23,560. How low do you think I can go?
  • marksj1marksj1 Member Posts: 20
Everyone tells of what they get as far as invoice price above and below.I was wondering as what everyone one is doing with your trade in's?Are you selling privately? Is the best approach to start off not talking trade and then work it in after you hit dealer price?I have an 06 CR-V AWD Base model with 45,000.I have been unhappy with it and like the RAV4 style better.I feel I have a "good" trade with some leverage.Any thoughts?
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
marksj1 - you are correct to leave out any talk about a trade until AFTER you have negotiated your best deal. This is the only way you will find out how much they are really giving you for your old car. You should use www.kbb.com to see what your old car is worth as a trade-in and as a private party sale. Also, don't forget that CARMAX will buy your car from you even if you do not buy a car from them. They will appraise your car and give you a quote that is good for one week.
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
colfaxwolf - it's hard to answer without knowing the options that are on the vehicle. According to edmunds.com, the invoice for that vehicle (including freight and without any options) is $21,797. There is no harm in starting with that and let the dealer take it up from there. Remember, they want to sell the car MORE than you want to buy it.

One minor comment. I'm seeing the freight charge on edmunds.com as $685 not $735. You might want to check that.
  • marksj1marksj1 Member Posts: 20
Thanks for all the info.Never heard of CARMAX doing something like buying a car. Thanks again for the help :)

I got a quote from the UPromise Auto Buying website for $22,633. The msrp is $24,020 and the invoice is $22,933. I think that would be a great price. That would be the price before I add any optional equipment. It is on the base V6 model.

    Hey guys!
Just got a quote on a Rav4 Sport 4wd V4 and wanted to know what you all think. I don't know the acronyms you guys use, so I'll do my best to explain what it comes with. It is basically the base sport model but has the upgraded radio, tonneau cover and floor mats. No sunroof. The price is $24,000 with an OTD price of $26,690. What do you think? I'm not sure what other info I should include, but please let me know. This is a very informative forum. :)

I'm located in Florida and find that the only combinations available with the Tow Prep package on the Southeast Distributors' website appear to be those with cloth interior and third seat. Has anyone been able to order a 2WD V-6 Leather Limited with the Tow Prep and without the third row seat ? We consider the third row seat a negative for our needs as it eliminates hidden storage and the ability to drop the second row seats easily.

Has any one had the experience of ordering a vehicle NOT in the Southeast Distributors inventory. We're not in a hurry, but wonder what kind of delivery cycle we should expect.

I want to bid on a Rav4 base 4x4 V6 it comes with these options:
    roof rack
    tonneau cover
    daytime lights
    tow prep package
    5 pc mats
    wheel locks
Sticker Price is $25,428 Dealers price is $23,728
    Should I offer less????
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
ruthie2 - these are the edmunds.com "invoice" prices for the vehicle you describe:

    4x4 base V6 $22,461.00
    Freight $685.00
    TDA ?
    CD Tonneau Cover $112.00
    DR Roof Rack $176.00
    WL Wheel Locks $65.00
    RL Running Lights $32.00
    TO Tow Prep $128.00
CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set $126.00
    GRAND TOTAL $23,785.00

As you can see, there is a small discrepancy between what you have for the dealers cost and what edmunds has. Also note that edmunds does not include TDA. I would say that you should start your offer around $23,000 and let the dealer take it up from there. But do not go above $24,000.

watsac, thanks for getting back to me so quickly last week. And you are correct, I don't think I did that bad after all. I went ahead and secured my own financing for 4.99% and brought it to the dealer Friday. The guy who did the original workup went on vacation another finance person cleaned everything up. I didn't even have to wait for the title...she also told me I could have taken possession that day and secured finance the next day or so...he was such a slimeball liar. Anyhow, thanks again. Also, the XM receiver was already in it so another extra with the demo along with the rest!
  • ruthie2ruthie2 Member Posts: 15
turns out the salesman won't take anything but $800 over invoice, his offer to me was $25,024. I'd like not to spend more than TMV! which is $ 24,404. :D
  • watsacwatsac Member Posts: 49
ruthie2 - tell him to stick it and walk away. I don't know where you live but there MUST be at least 2 Toyota dealers in your area and I would recommend trying the other one. Also, try shopping by phone. Call other dealers and ask for their 'internet' sales rep. Even if they do not officially have one, they will direct you to someone who understands you are shopping primarily for price. And lastly, do not ever forget that the dealers want to sell the car MORE than you want to buy it. Just be patient and trust me on that and you will get your price.
  • ruthie2ruthie2 Member Posts: 15
Thanks for your advice watsac, I found a Toyota dealer 90 mi from my home who will sell me the same car plus it has alloy wheels. I will be paying $24,324...a price I can live with. Salesman said it is $100 over his invoice. BTW I live in central Wisconsin. :)

I just signed papers for walk-out price of 2008 Rav4-Limited-4CYL-2WD with:

    •JBL-AM/FM 6Disc Changer
    •Moonroof
    •Leather Seats/Interior
    •Seat Warmers
    •Carpet Mats

And walk-out price with TTL and all dealer fees of $26,268. The sales tax was 7% (included in this price).

Is that a good deal here in Atlanta, GA?

What should one be paying for a 2008 RAV4 4x2 limited with jbl stereo/bluetooth, tow package, moon roof, side molding?

jen25 - looks like MSRP is 27,964 and "invoice" is 25,636 for the car you describe. I would make my first offer to the dealer at 25,500 and not go more than 25,700.

I've been trying to figure out what to pay for a Rav4 2WD V6 Limited with the following :
    MSRP
    Base Vehicle Price 25420
    Blizzard White (Special Color) 220
    Tow prep package TOAT 160
    Leather seats LA80 1398
    Moon roof SRAT 900
    Running lights RLAT 40
Drop Hitch Receiver and wiring DH60 399
    Stainless Steel Step Bars 475
    Floor Mats/Cargo mats PV50 269

    Total Options 3861
    Delivery Charge 735

As you can see some of these items are not shown In Edmund's TMV calculations.
Nor can I find out the dealer's invoice price on some of these items.
Additionally, dealers in this area(Florida) have a Dealer Handling Charge of 599 to 699. Same is true of Honda dealers

How would I go about determining a good starting offer on my part?
There is currently no such vehicle in inventory in the Southeast United States. My dealer is ordering it or something close . When he comes back with a price I'd like to be prepared with a counter offer.

    Hello,
A friend asked me to find the best deal on an '08 RAV4. I have had great success with the Edmunds site before, but for some reason I have trouble pricing this SUV out on Edmunds.com. I don't see all the options and even if I plug in something close to what I need, I still don't get the invoice cost. So I could use some help with knowing the approximate invoice for the vehicle with the following equipment:

    2008 RAV4
    4x4 3.5L V6 Limited 5 Speed Automatic

    Option D
JBL 6 changer in dash CH changer with satellite radio cap.
MP3 / WMA capability, hands free phone / bluetooth
    9 speakers including subwoofer
    50 state emissions
    Daytime running lights
Driver and front passenger heated seats
    Leather trimmed seats
Power / tilt moonroof with sunshades

    Exterior: Black
    Interior: Taupe Leather

    All weather mats

    MSRP $30662

Sure would appreciate any info in the invoice price of this vehicle and what a good deal would be.

    Thanks

I refused to pay for the special paint, I got Pacific Blue metallic at no extra charge, I'm getting an after market 3500# hitch with wiring installed for under $300. I think the carpet /mats the Rav4 comes with are cheap looking, I wished I would of just bought after market mats! :)

Thanks for your reply. I've discussed the hitch with the trailer mechanics who does repair and maintenance on my boat trailer and has installed Tow Hitches and wiring on my old Volvo.
The trailer wiring harness has to be special because the Rav4 has LED tail and brake lights. My trailer guy says the boat trailer wiring has to be wired from the battery and can't be spliced from the existing wiring in the rear of the Rav4. Perhaps you should check to see if the wiring you're having installed handles the LED rear lights on the Rav4 properly. The wiring harness alone, aftermarket , goes for about $160. The MSRP on the RAV4 Hitch is $399. If the wiring is included at that price it seems to me it would be worth having it installed by Toyota. Hopefully they would install it properly.

The Special Color I'm getting is Blizzard Pearl, I'll try to see if I can avoid the special paint charge. Thanks for the tip.
