Is there always a destination fee of $900?? or is that hocus pocus - lol. I'm still double checking for deals. I will keep you updated.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Yeah, there's always a destination fee. The only way to "avoid" it is to negotiate an out the door price that works for you. Then you don't care what the line item fees are. People often take invoice (with destination, lol), whack $1,000 to $2,000 off that number, figure out their fees and use that number as their target.

The hocus pocus comes with the doc fees (anything over $50 is too high) and other fees. Sometimes the fees sound legit but are just made up names. Other times it something like a protection package or VIN etching, etc. Those are big profit centers for dealers.

I got a quote for a 2016 Highlander XLE AWD with Captain's Chair, Remote start, All weather mats and cargo liner, paint protection film, and protection package for $37,449 plus tax/fees. Is that a reasonable price?

Invoice is $37,492, MSRP is $41,044 and True Market Value is $38,925. Those numbers include the $900 destination, and I assumed protection package 1 in the option list.

Best double-check my numbers and plug in your own zip code, but your quote sounds very reasonable.

I am in Houston, Texas and was quoted 39,595+TTL on a Limited with remote start and floor mats. is this a good deal?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    FWD I assume.

Invoice is $38,706 and the TMV average is $40,092, including your ~$675 in options and the $900 destination.

So you are beating the average by $500.

Texas is kind of a tough market so I think your quote is good.

The taxes are what they are, but be careful of any bogus fees or add-ons when you get your out the door number.

Let us know how it goes!
  • texmusictexmusic Member Posts: 3
Thanks. So do you feel they can sharpen their pencil a little on this quote? After researching I feel they should be closer to 39,000..

You may squeeze a bit more out, with this being the end of the month. But Texas dealers don't seem all that aggressive on pricing. Worth a shot though.

Ended up with OTD at $41750.

If AWD, good price. If FWD, then about a $1,000 too high, in my experience.

Southern California. Paid $39,720 +$80 doc fee + TTL for Limited AWD with cross bars, floor and cargo carpet mats, rear bumper protector and a cargo net. Price was $39,800 w/o the doc fee but they insisted it remain and lowered the price.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Congrats! And yeah, it's easy enough for the dealer to "rearrange" the fees.

Nice thing about California, no doc fee can exceed $80. Of course everyone maxes it out at $80. :)

Hello! Looking at a 2016 XLE AWD. Received price of $38,300 before TTL. Price includes all weather mats and cargo liner. I'm in San Jose, CA.

Is this a good price? What's is TMV? Thanks!

Look up the invoice price, not TMV. You should aim for invoice price, or 1% over invoice price, at the most. Several websites will give you invoice price.

Invoice is $36,423, MSRP is $39,875 and the True Market Value average price paid for 95111 is $38,240.

Those numbers include the $900 destination, and TMV takes into account a bit of a "premium" for your area.

So, your quote is "average". @mcdawgg's recommendation would be to shoot for ~$36,800 before your taxes and fees. That idea works for me; it's getting sort of the end of the 2016s and if you shop around some more, you might find a more aggressive quote.

    Good luck!

how about 52800 OTD for Hybrid Limited Platinum w/ remote start, cross bars, cargo net, premium mats in Dallas
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Invoice is $47,755, MSRP is $52,559 and the TMV average price paid is $49,928.

So, back out your taxes and fees and hopefully your selling price will beat the TMV average.

Not sure if all models are included, but Toyota is advertising their annual clearance event right now, so that could help pricing.

Texas dealers aren't all that aggressive on pricing. I hear that Houston is getting better (or maybe I have that backwards).

    Hi Stever and other members

I am looking for OTD price for 2016 Highlander LE AWD V6. The lowest price quote I got was $34500. Can anyone tell me how much to negotiate on this model.

Invoice is $31,463, MSRP is $34,375 and TMV is $32,542 for a Bridgewater zip (I assumed NJ from your member name. :) )

Assuming your taxes and fees are around 10%, that would put your selling price around $31,050. If so, that would be a pretty good quote, since the TMV average is $1,100 over invoice.

Check out the annual clearance sale Toyota is having too, might be some more deals buried in there.

    Good luck!

I'm just starting to look around and like most I suppose, I'm focusing on the Pilot, Highlander and the Sorento (KIA). This information is great. I'm in Colorado and AWD are in demand - which is what I want too. I really hate the buying process but maybe I'll give Costco a shot and see if I can't shorten the process. Thanks for the information.

@Michaell may have some suggestions about dealers to check out.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Always seems like there aren't a whole lot of Highlander's on a dealer lot. Midwest seems to have the most perhaps because Detroit competing models also sell well there.
  • justplaineddiejustplaineddie Member Posts: 2
With 2017 Highlanders coming out soon, is it reasonable to expect dealers to discount 2016 vehicles that are on the lot. My local dealer says Toyota does not allow this. Zip code 31061

I doubt you will get much of a deal on a 2016 now, because they typically have one of the lowest days-on-hand inventories. In other words, they sell very quickly, not many are on the lots.

Your local dealer statement is not really correct. The dealer can discount them, but the dealer does not want to! Toyota does not have any extra incentives on Highlanders - no need to when they sell fast.

I'd push to get a 2016 at invoice price, or at most 1% over invoice. Maybe waiting until there are 2017s on the lot you'd get a better deal, but I'd bet not until then.

Invoice is $36,772, MSRP is $40,428 and the True Market Value average price paid is $38,400.

So your quote before taxes and fees is well below average and close to invoice. Looks like you're doing fine to me; I'm assuming your taxes are high (9 or 10%?), so the only thing else to watch for are any junk fees. But 10% tax on $37k gets you over $40k fast so I think the OTD number adds up too.

Hello! I'm in Houston, TX area. I was offered 2016 FWD XLE model for $35,200 +TTL. This included cargo cover and net, 5 piece premium carpet mat with original price of MSRP $38,758. I asked for running boards and he said it'll be $35,900. Is there any more room for negotiation for this price? Any help or feed back is greatly appreciated!

Hi @quinlanl, I get a slightly different MSRP of $38,668 and invoice of $35,273 (including destination of $900). The True Market Value average price paid for Houston is close to invoice at $36,043.

So your quote is right at invoice.

MSRP on the running boards is $599 so they are bumping you up too much there (invoice is $375).

I think there's more room to negotiate here. Not sure about Toyotas but for most of the year, Hondas were a bit cheaper in Dallas. So you may want to get a quote or two up that way and see if that's worth the drive (or if you get a good quote, ask your local dealer to match).

    Good luck!
  • quinlanlquinlanl Member Posts: 5
@stever! Thanks so much for your input! I too felt that he bumped up the running boards price just because I made a mistake by telling him 'I need to have running boards'... (sigh)... another valuable lesson learned :) I'll try to see if he can lower the price... if not, I'll get the running boards install later. Thanks so much again for your help!!! You gave me some feed back a few months back when I was looking at the 2016 Pilot. After much research, I decided to get the Highlander instead and I'm thankful to find this site to learn about the 'internet buying guide process', and get 2nd opinion on the purchase price. This time around was a pleasant experience without the hassle and pressure from the walk-in the dealer's sale guy. Thank you again for dedicating your valuable time!

My local dealer says that in addition to their invoice cost and destination fee, they are also charge $898 from Toyota for advertising, which they say they include in every car deal. Edmunds website doesnot show an amount for the advertising line item. The dealer is trying to steer me to bid $1k overdealer invoice. Seems excessive considering holdback, and such, especially if the advertising fee is bogus.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Edmunds says "Sometimes buyers look up invoice prices on Edmunds and find they don't match the invoice price given by a dealer. What's going on? There is probably an advertising fee attached to the invoice price of the car. If the car's invoice lists an advertising fee, this is an actual charge made by the manufacturer to the dealer and you should pay it."

I think that's a load of hooey - it may be a legit fee but I don't think consumers should pay it. :) It's just another cost of doing business like the light and water bill.

Edmunds posts the ad fees when we know it. When I look up a Highlander for a DC zip, I see "Unavailable*", which is likely what you are seeing too.

When I do notice them, they are rarely over $200.

Can I interest you in, say, a Pilot?

Seriously, I can tell by your post that you are a well educated consumer and know your stuff. Stick to your guns - car sales are easing and every dealer knows that their bargaining position has weakened a little. You may want to make a counter out the door offer.

(before going to the Honda dealer, lol).

Just bought a 2016 LE Plus Highlander AWD (w/ all weather mats), outside of Philadelphia for ~$31,800 plus tax and tag; so $2k under invoice.
Got a quote for LE AWD for $2K under invoice as well but we wanted the upgrades the plus model offered.

Hello, I've got two offers right around $40,500 +TTL for a FWD Limited Platinum (MSRP $46,540) in DFW area and go with the 0% for 60 months financing. Anyone think that I could do significantly better? Thanks in advance.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454

You're 13% back of MSRP with your MSRP and offers @nsa122. I think that's good for DFW and doubt that you could do much better. Nice rig and the 0% is a big plus too.

(Our MSRP is about $800 less, so I guess you may have some options tacked on - here's our pricing link)

    Hello,

I am in market for the 2017 Highlander limited Platinum. one of the dealers offered me $42735/- where the MSRP is $47.200/-, any thoughts on this deal?. I am from Illinois and the dealer is based of Chicago.

    Thanks in advance.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Hi @naad_khula, that looks like a good deal. TMV for your area is $46,269 so not much under MSRP. Your quote is $1,000 under the invoice of $43,676. Those numbers include the destination and TMV includes a $500 incentive.

The only thing that gives me pause is @nsa122's deal down in TX. But his was FWD and winter is here, so that's probably why his percentage off MSRP is a bit better.

Any additional discount or lower pricing on the 2016 seeing how it's almost 2017? I'm getting a quote for LE Plus AWD with Running Board, Cargo Cover, 5-pc mat set, Connectivity Kit (whatever this is) and useless vehicle protection package: $33,500 (dealer provided listed price of $38,500) + tax, titles/license fee.

    Thanks for the input

You'd think so - not only is it almost 2017, but the 2017 Highlanders are out there.

If you have a bit of time, wait until the month end and see if the dealer(s) will deal. One of them many need to make quota. You may want to check the dealer links for inventory or our inventory link. More is better for negotiating.

Right now you're around 13% below MSRP. Be nice to see you shave a bit more off (15% off would be $32,700 or so - not a huge amount but that would take care of the pro pack.

Hi, in Southern California the Toyota incentive on a 2016 Highlander is just $750. Is that because the 2017s are just starting to roll out? Does it make sense to wait to purchase after December? I just helped my dad buy a 2016 Avalon and the incentive was $2500, and I believe it is now $3k. Thank you!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
SUVs are selling better than sedans so the incentives aren't so good.

The main issue with waiting is that the selection dries up, but that may not be an issue until more 2017s arrive (although plenty seem to be in stock). We have an inventory link or you can hit the dealers individually and see what they have in stock. Call first before driving to a dealer, all these links are notoriously inaccurate. GIGO is alive and well.
