Your right the Titan is not had time to be truely tested. Time will tell, but like any Nissan I'm sure it will get the highest reliablity/customer satisfaction. My own experience the Titan holds up to it's name this far.. I love the dyno results this baby seems to put out according to others.. I know that I have driven them all before I bought and without a doubt this truck has the most power. You can feel it every time you drive it.. You will need to have a open mind before testing and it seems you already have a opinion about this truck. If your not afraid of trying something new, being different or just plain having something no one else does this truck is for you. Good luck in purchase you won't go wrong in whatever you get..
Regardless of all the Brand loyalty that we see here the one factor that is going to make your truck enjoyable or not is the dealership you buy from. Most vehicles manufactured today are far superior to what we had to buy 10 years ago. They are built to at least a minimum standard as required by our government and have to be a relatively reliable vehicle so people will continue to buy and they get to stay in business.
I am currently pro Dodge mainly because I have had 2 very reliable trucks! When there is a problem I know the dealership I bought from is going to do everything in their power to make me happy as a customer. I feel as long as I continue to have such a superior dealership supporting my vehicle of choice I will continue rewarding them with my business.
I previously owned several Nissan vehicles. My last truck was an 82 King Cab 4x4. This truck broke down twice leaving me stranded, once on a cross country trip.
My next truck was an 87 Ford F150 XLT 6cyl 4 speed manual. It was a good truck however the gas mileage was horrible, it averaged 11.5 mpg in the winter and 13 in the summer.
In 93 I traded for a Dodge Dakota club cab with a v8 and an automatic trans. My gas mileage went up 2 to 3 mpg even though I had a less efficient engine and transmission. The only problem with this truck other than routine stuff was warped brake rotors which was cured with a quality set of aftermarket rotors. The brake rotors were recommended by the dealer and replaced under warranty too!
I traded it in on a 2000 Dakota Quad cab I special ordered in 2000. It was flawless and I intended in keeping it at least 7 years until I had a motorcycle accident and mangled my left leg. No more manual transmissions were in my future so I traded for my current 2003 Dodge Ram Quad cab 5.7 V8 and 5 spd auto.
So far it has continued the trend of my 2 previous Dodge trucks and has required only routine maintenance as required to keep the warranty in force.
Would I buy a Nissan Titan?
Regardless of the hard time I give bowke28, probably if I became dissatisfied with my Dodge Ram and my dealer and was considering trying another brand.
UNFORTUNATELY my dealership experience with my Nissan was not as rewarding.
We bought a new Altima SE in 96 from our local dealer. The car was probably one of the best we have owned over the years other than a Toyota Crown we owned when we lived in Tokyo for 3 years.
The dealership experience was not up to the standard set by the Altima. Every time I took it in for service they tried to sell me bull s**t packages of suggested maintenance for many hundreds of dollars over the cost of the required maintenance. I tolerated them because my wife loved the car. Then she saw pictures of the new Altima and really thought she would like to have one of the new V6 SEs.
I spoke to the sales manager about ordering a base Altima SE. All we wanted was the base car with the 3.5 v6 and a 5 speed. Well at that time I guess there was an allocation on the Atimas and he would not give up getting a loaded Altima (more profit) to get a stripped one for me.
We ended up going to my Dodge dealer and ordering a loaded 2002 Neon R/T right down to getting leather and side air bags. Besides being thousands less the Neon is every bit as reliable and fun to drive as our 96 Altima without the greedy dealer experience.
I guess what I am saying it doesn't really matter how good the vehicle is if you don't have a quality dealership to provide the support you expect.
There was an article in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle a few months back that the Better Business Bureau put Nissan dealers close to last when it came to resolving repair issues amicably.
As usual you are only seeing one part of the message. The problem with my Nissan pickup, which caused me to seek alternative brands for my TRUCK was 22 years ago. The problem I related was with my wife's Altima which if you look was bought in 1996 and traded in 2002. We attempted to purchase the current body style Altima. The truck was a problem when I lived in Washington DC. The Altima is in the MidWest. 2 different zones with poor dealership experiences over a range of 22 years. Some things never change!
I agree with you on how much a dealership influences sales and loyalty. When my friend and I went looking for his new dodge, many of the dealers played the old shell game in trying to get him to sign on the dotted line. Except one dealership, in Lewisville, TX, that played it straight with him through out the whole process. My friend is very picky and it took 2 months before he would finally sign. And the dealer was courteous (even when I had lost patience with him) the whole time. Other, dodge dealers weren't. And, just so I don't leave the Nissan people out, why is that the salesmen are not very knowledgeable about their Titan? When I went for a test drive in the Titan, neither the salesman or his manager could answer half of the same questions that I posed to each and every dodge dealer that we had been too.
i understand the frustration with product knowledge...i have to deal with it with my own co-workers. nissan people have only had the necessity of truck knowledge for a few months, and its only a fraction of their sales. for dodge dealers, the emphasis is put on trucks and minivans from day 1, which is most of their business.
Dodge is a little more diverse than trucks and minivans. Thier sales are good there, but I see a lot of intrepids, neons, and straus' out there.
I tend to agree with the post above regarding nissan service reputation. I had excellent luck with the infiniti dealership, but the local nissan dealer has a mile long list of complaints with both sales and service with the better business bureau. They actually had a listing in the paper a while back listing the number of complaints with the various dealers in the county. Nissan was a big loser.
someone posted in the titan vs. f150 board that they believed most cars are just as reliable as each other, but the longevity made the difference. i tend to agree. most domestics begin having costly issues at or around 100k miles. most toy/honda/nissans tend to go closer to 150k before these things come to bear. we'll see how the titan does, but nissan has good history with the longevity of trucks.
Is important. When taking my Explorer in for service each time has been a pleasant occasion I have no complaints about this dealership or its service department. So far when I was since I've been looking for info on the Armada I went to 2 local dealerships. The first I talked with was a saleswoman who really knew a great deal about the truck and the other trucks in Nissans lineup. The second dealership the salesman while a nice guy knew less then I did about the Armada lol. A new Infiniti dealership opened up nearby so I will check out the QX56 when they start getting them in.
Yes, I have noticed. And I also notice that some people start forums like "truck A vs truck B" and then whenever anyone anyone sides with thier opinion, wonderfully suporting responses follow by the originator. When someone disagrees, itwill be soundly refuted or swept neatly under the rug.
I went to the auto show in Chicago on monday. Quite frankly, I thought the interior looked a little cheap. My first hands on experience (subjective) was that statistaclly the truck is fine, but I think that there will be a lot of touching up for Nissan to do in the next few years.
Let's see. Is the world round because you bought a Titan, or is the world round because of Titan? (It's kind of funny, but despite not owning a Titan I already knew -- at an early age -- that the world was round.)
Actually, its more like "see, I'm so much smarter and intelligent and neater and cool and hip and cosmopolitan than you (insert name of truck) guys."
That was a 'if you don't think like me...' statement. The blatant arrogance and smugness aside, there were some things my father WAS correct about.
Because satisfied owners of Ford, Chevy, Dodge pickups aren't gullible to hype like owners of Japanese brand cars. Would be interesting to see how few owners of Ford, Chevy, or Dodge pickups traded in for a Nissan Titan.
Is DODGE flawless "WRONG". Is NISSAN flawless "WRONG". They all have problems even the so-called mighty Dodge. It's truck has been around how long????? Does Nissan have issues with the Titan "YES". Is one better then the other depends who you ask.. No one likes to hear someone made a bad purchase rather its Dodge or Nissan.. There's things I like about both and dislike about both. It comes down to "are you ready for change". I can sit here and pick at the Dodge Truck all night with my two friends beside me. One owns a 2004 1500 and the other a 2004 2500 both with HEMI' s.. Yes they have problems with there trucks both have been at the dealership. One of the guys went out and bought a aftermarket air intake system so he could gain some HP/TORQUE and he still can't out run me.. Does that mean my Titan is better then his Ram? "NO" My biggest beef with Dodge right now is you can pick up a Ram for almost $10,000 off MSRP with all the rebates and discounts.. What's that truck going to be worth in a year not very darn much!!
If a person buys a truck that has an MSRP of $30,000 and he actually purchases the truck for $20,000, where do you think the deprectiation will start from? Other buyers are that stupid. If they know that the real price was $20,000 they know that the used price will be adjusted down from the $20,000 number, not the $30,000 number. Resale is relative to the actual sales prices.
Same holds true for the "high demand" cars. I remember when the mazda miata came out. Dealers were selling above MSRP. People were selling them used for more than MSRP because buyers had actually paid a greater realistic price when new.
thats just what i was trying to get at earlier...the generalized terms like "hatcheescratchee" and other racial references show exactly what type of people still think there is a difference. kinda makes me laugh...with sick pity.
So the folks who bought those trucks before the huge discounts are screwed? Doesn't seem right!! You can say it starts at $20,000 but the guy who paid $28500 for his before the rebates and huge discounts gets really boned. Problem I have heard striaght from a Dodge salesman is people want to trade there 2003-2002 Rams in for a 2004 and he can't give them nothing for it because they can buy a brand new one that's discounted $6000-$10000 off...
>>>They all have problems even the so-called mighty Dodge. It's truck has been around how long?????<<<
You see, it is and always has been about self-ordained superiority and the commensurate company of smugness and arrogance. Who owns the "best." This forum was invented to ridicule the Dodge (and utimately the owners) and brag about the Titan. This is so salesperson-like. They must have a number to demonstrate that they sell something better. The Titan is faster (although I haven't seen and times yet), the Titan has more torque (by how many pounds?), yadayadayada.
Naturally there will be people to carry water for those unknowledgeable sales folk suffering from insecurity. After all, if they bought a Titan, it must be the best. But the Titan braggaderos cannot rewrite history. They cannot remove the totally inaccurate statements or the child-like smugness from earlier posts.
They all have problems..Salesman I don't know any in here other then bowke (not sure if he is). You like to defend Dodge thats good!! I like to defend Nissan to a point...If we ALL can dish it out we better beable to take it..Some folks just take too personal. Is the Titan faster it seems so...When the new HEMI comes out it will eat the Titan for breakfast. This engine I can't wait to see.. I will be going to the autoshow in NYC in april and be sure I will ask about it.
To point, youa re correct regarding the person buying an earlier model getting boned. Myself included. These rebates and incentives have not taken place overnight. They have increased over a peiod of time. Anyone trading a truck in from 1-2 years ago certainly got the advantage of some of these incentives when they purchased. So they did get a better deal when they bought.
The used car market is dead right now, in part due to these incentives. I don't think that anyone in thier right mind can point thier finger at Dodge and say that its thier fault. All the domestics and some of the import sellers have been participating in various incentives to continue to drive sales in a somewhat sluggish economy, not just Dodge. In part its the greed of the automakers trying toi keep thier sales at record paces and part consumers purchasing new products to capitalize on the good deals when they really have no need for a replacement vehicle.
The incentives war was not started by Dodge, Ford or anybody else but GM. GM has kept incentives on a majority of their vehicles through most of 2003, even on their most popular models. The reason? Ford was getting too close at making GM the second largest auto manufacturer in the world, something that corporate ego could not stand. Even willing to lose profits to keep that from happening.
You're also right about the current used car market. Flash and fad sales of the past have produced a just being felt ripple. There is a glut of certain types of cars: mini-vans, SUVs, and trucks. Be thankful if you are a Dodge truck owner. The used market IS NOT glutted with RAMS and even less of Dakotas. The piston slap and other quality problems have put a lot of GM trucks on the used market. Ford suffers from it's own popuarity as there are so many F150s available, too. Caravans, Explorers, Grand Cherokees, Windstars, S10 Blazers are among the bigger resale losers.
As the used market begins to settle down this will swing back to a more normal condition. It just so happens that my company is rotating out of F150s and taking a real hit on them now. But spring is just around the corner!
In January there was a news item that TOYOTA had become No. 2 automaker worldwide and Ford slipped to third place. Here are the sales numbers: #1......GM 8,600,000 vehicles #2......Toyota 6,780,000 vehicles #3......Ford 6,720,000 vehicles
Ford has NEVER challenged GM for #1 in sales altho the Ford F-150 is THE best selling model of any vehicle in the USA. The Dodge Ram is a very solid #3 for best selling model behind #2 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.
I am afraid I must disagree with you. The reason GM has kept the incentives up and inventory moving is not b/c of Ford, but b/c GMC has an under funded pension and lots of retiree's drawing more medical benefits than they planned for: They have to keep the cash coming in so they can shove it out the back door and keep their stock price up.
But then what do I know, I drive an import so I am arrogant and ....smug...
in Mississippi and saw the plant at Canton where they assemble the Titan. There's an exit with an expansive exit ramp and blvd. there called Nissan Drive. The plant is huge. I checked the parking lot carefully on the way south and coming home and saw the parking lot filled with Fords, Chevys, Cadillacs, Dodges etc. but very few foreign makes. I guess the good old boys and girls who build them don't buy them. Is that a UAW plant? They do have an interesting accessory on site. What looks like a smoke stack, actually produces sonic waves that prevents hail from forming for a one mile radius. The local news channel ran the story.
You're correct. I meant North America, but I typed "world."
When you compare the North American sales growth, retention of market, and projection based on 2002s sales, you will find that if maintaining moderate but steady growth, Ford would displace GM by 2008.
>>>The Dodge Ram is a very solid #3 for best selling model behind #2 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.<<<
I'm pretty sure you meant truck.
>>>But then what do I know, I drive an import so I am arrogant and ....smug...<<<
Gee, the old "I'm a victim" strategy by trying to put words into people's mouths that was never said.
that part was in response to a different poster dusty, sorry for not making that clearer, but I don't recall ever using the 'I'm a victim' strategy in my posts.
To keep this post on topic, I am planning on test driving the titan, tundra and ram this weekend if we don't ice over. I'll post my experience.
Let's back off the personal stuff and confine the conversation to the trucks.
And...no user is going to have any other user "removed". That's the job of the hosts, when and IF it needs to take place. Please refrain from the "I'm going to tell the teacher" mode...
>>>if you cant be civil and carry on an intelligent conversation about the differences between the trucks, i'll have you removed. the titan and ram hemi are the only things pertinent to this discussion.<<
I'd be careful here. There was a bash comment about Americans, but you didn't seem to mind as long as the commentor was bashing Dodge. And what about your occasional trite and child-like jabs? Please don't give me the "didn't you see the smiley," either.
Since you opened up four threads versus the Titan as an obvious vehicle to hone your sales scripts for potential customers, I find this whole scheme kind of insulting. Since I have been a contributor in the Edmunds' forums, I know of no other person who identified him or herself as a automobile salesman that has behaved in such a way or attempted to use these forums for such a prurient manner.
As to the claim that you are only interested in "...speak[ing] intelligently about the differences in the 2 trucks and why you like one or the other...," I think this is entirely disingenuous and hypocritical. You most certainly haven't complained about the direction of the dialog when inflammatory comments were made about Dodge or there was a caustic suggestion made about the intelligence of Dodge owners.
Your whole contribution here has been one-sided and highly biased. That is most certainly your privilege, but please don't try to recast yourself has the non-partisan narrator.
And Ford trucks are better for my needs than Nissan. Based on my experience with my 1970 Dodge van, I would not buy a Dodge Ram whether it had a Hemi, V10, regular V8, straight 6 or a slant 6 nor would I buy a Nissan Titan.
actually, if you had any kind of idea what i do here in town hall, you wouldnt be thinking those things at all. i am a regular poster in MANY boards, nissan, ford, and honda included, along with smart shopper boards. to be continued.....
It might not be a bad idea to close this down...Its creating to many bad vibes and theirs to much psycho babble. If its not a Dodge it crap, if its not a Nissan its crap, if its not domestic its crap, its not foreign its crap....If we keep this open we need to get back to side by side comparisons. Then again I guess it all comes down to "WHO CARES" applies
I don't mind keeping it open, but it needs to get back to topic.. I like comparing my Titan with other trucks but not when it becomes TOO MUCH "BS". As renegaded said, "it might be time to call it a day".
I was fortunate to buy mine over the phone from a really cool guy.. We agreed upon $500 over invoice and that was fine with me.. He didn't try to sell me any extras or false promises.. As a matter of fact the day I was there to pick it up with check in hand he said, "Hey the financial lady is going to try to sell you a extended warranty but Nissan has 5yr 60000 mile powertrain warranty". He then said, " I will tell you, now the profit they make of that warranty is huge". I said yep I have seen warranties like that and besides I trade about every 3-4 years..
im sick of you assuming that i started this discussion for professional purposes. nothing could be farther from the truth. im a car nut. pure and simple. i dont like nissan because i sell them, i sell them because i like them. i could have made more money selling toyota, ford, chevy, etc...but i picked a small nissan store. why? because a little more money isnt worth selling something i dont like. you can think what you want about me, and my motivations for being here, but know the facts before you make assumptions please.
my 'sales strategies' are just fine without this board, and need no practice.
renegaded, you said you want to extend the olive branch, and you followed that with a personal insult. decide what you want to do. dicuss automobiles or insult other members? most of us came here so people tying to decide could get information both ways. you like the dodge better. why? i like the nissan better. i'll post those reasons later.
>>> i dont like nissan because i sell them, i sell them because i like them. i could have made more money selling toyota, ford, chevy, etc...but i picked a small nissan store.<<<
I hope you're not expecting me to believe that, are you? You happen to work for a Ford & Nissan dealer, don't you? Are you trying to say that you just happen to like the two brands that your dealership sells?
Which came first, the Ford or Nissan franchise?
>>>i'm a car nut....<<<
There are a lot of "car nuts" in here. There's a difference between a "car nut" and a person who is a prisoner of their own opinions seeking social superiority.
Sales bias and partisanship, pure and simple. The history of your posts tell the story.
i came to work here because i like nissans, and its a reputable dealer. i sell fords when im asked to, no more, no less. i sold lincoln/mercury and honda before, and even though i made more money, i didnt like the people i worked for/with. this may blow away your whole opinion of the car business, but some of us enjoy what we do for more reasons than money.
>>>I am afraid I must disagree with you. The reason GM has kept the incentives up and inventory moving is not b/c of Ford, but b/c GMC has an under funded pension and lots of retiree's drawing more medical benefits than they planned for: They have to keep the cash coming in so they can shove it out the back door and keep their stock price up.<<<
But that doesn't make any sense. Since GM has had the incentives on they've lost revenue. Why would a company reduce the price on their product to boost sales if they needed capital to pay a bill?
We are WAY too deep into "trying to prove" things and we're into the phase where almost every post has a personal angle attached to it. It stops NOW.
It really doesn't matter who came here for what reason or what their background is or isn't. Town Hall is not a place for you to personally duke it out. I don't want ANYONE to lose their access to Town Hall, but if this continues, that's the end of the road this kind of stuff leads to.

renegaded, you said you want to extend the olive branch, and you followed that with a personal insult. decide what you want to do. dicuss automobiles or insult other members? most of us came here so people tying to decide could get information both ways. you like the dodge better. why? i like the nissan better. i'll post those reasons later.
But that doesn't make any sense. Since GM has had the incentives on they've lost revenue. Why would a company reduce the price on their product to boost sales if they needed capital to pay a bill?
It really doesn't matter who came here for what reason or what their background is or isn't. Town Hall is not a place for you to personally duke it out. I don't want ANYONE to lose their access to Town Hall, but if this continues, that's the end of the road this kind of stuff leads to.
