that I haven't seen answered in this forum yet.
Can anyone out there comment on the payload listed in Edmunds that states it is 996lbs. for the frontier? Is this correct? I would have hoped it would be greater than this. I know sometimes all the facts aren't right and was hoping someone who owns the 2005 could let me know what the manual says. Also, was wondering if anyone can comment on the performance from the 2.5 engine compared to the 2.7 from the 2005 Tacoma? Anyone with any first hand experience? Thanks to all - - hope to hear some good feedback like always!!
  • dbauerdbauer Member Posts: 416
996 lbs. is for a 2wd CC, not including passengers.
  • autonutsautonuts Member Posts: 138
Thanks for your reply dbauer. Do you know what the payload is for the King-cab model with 4 or 6 cyl.? Can you comment on the 2.5L 2-wheel-drive as far as performance? Thanks.
  • midnightsunmidnightsun Member Posts: 92
Wow, that's terrific mileage for a heavy truck with a powerful engine! 2WD or 4WD? Auto or manual?

Looking at the posted mileages people get, it's obvious that driving style makes a difference. Keeping speed to 65 mph instead of 85 mph will save gas. Like you, I generally drive steady and easy, so I always get better highway mpg than the EPA ratings. I am hoping to get 22 mpg highway with the Frontier (truck is supposedly being made this month).
  • midnightsunmidnightsun Member Posts: 92
Oh, that's the kind of feedback I wanted anyway: road use. I have no plans to put "gnarly aggro tread" on any vehicle but was thinking of switching to Michelin LTX, which I have on my '92 Toyota 2WD and really like. I'll drive the stock tires for a while to see how I like them.

I won't be getting aggressive with my Frontier, either--it's pretty darned BIG with long wheelbase...something to think about on narrow winding trails. All the 4-wheeling I've done was slow-speed stuff, contrary to TV ads.

    witch truck do you have?

    LE CC 4X4

    badness,
It runs very well. It ran well, before, too, as the ticking sound really didn't affect performance, which is good. Any Frontier made after 01/11/05 will not have the rattle noise, per the TSB, so don't worry about it.
    I didn't drive a 2005 Toyota, so I can't compare to it, but I did own a 2004 Tacoma, which I rolled/totaled.
This truck has plenty of power. It rides smoother than my old one, and does not pass as much road noise to the cabin. The six speed is nice. I used 4WD a couple of times in snow. It sticks amazingly well. I have the ABLS option, which for 300 bucks is a steal, I think. I am happy with the purchase, especially for the price. I hope that helps.

nice thats what I want real bad, what price did you pay if you don't mind me asking.
I just got a call from the local dealer by asking me if I'm ready to come test drive Le CC 4x4 prob. Wed.day if things go good.
  • badnessbadness Member Posts: 242
Thanks woodshop28,yes it helps, well Wed.day looks like my turn to have some fun on test driving.going to try and talk him and bring some home work with me from the info from the sites, plus I know some one ,so I hope things go my way.
goodluck with your truck,ps did you get leather? If so is it worth having?
  • centralcalcentralcal Member Posts: 215
LE CC 4x4 Storm Grey/Grey Leather with Traction, XM radio, fosgate stereo, ABLS, sunroof, sliding bed extender, microfilter, floor mats, side airbag, destination charge: Invoice just under $30,000 (it was all the factory options except the tow hitch). I would say I got it for $400 over invoice, but that is because they gave me more than my car was worth. Actual price was $31000, but they paid me at least $600 more than Kbb for my car. I also got the extended warranty. They said it retailed for $1800, I bought it for $1000.

As far as the leather, I really like it. So easy to keep clean (I have two dogs) and looks very nice. Plus, heated seats, heated mirrors, 8 way electric seats. It is expensive, but worth it to me. The more miles I put on the truck, the smoother the engine/drivetrain. Nissan did a very good job. So far I have the rattle (getting fixed tomorrow), also my fan was making too much noise (you wouldn't even notice, but the truck is really quiet) so they are replacing that, otherwise no problems. Hope this helps.

Went to the local dealer on Sunday and did my second test drive. Had a few things I wanted to check out closer. Went on a good 30 minute+ drive went on some rough dirt roads(4x4 was seamless in and out) Tried the VDC by cranking the wheel all the way to lock and getting on the gas,no tire squeal or slippage of the front or rear just round and round! Sunroof is great!
The time is soon. They dont have the truck I want in stock and don't have one coming through the end of April. They did find 2 at a another nearby dealer, but they want a commitment to get it. I should have my financing in place in a couple of days. So I could have it by this weekend, if the numbers match!
I have the fightingchance information and am going to do the "fax attack" on about 35 dealers within about 3 to 4 hours of where I live. I am also interested in the N*WN*****S.C*M offer of $500.00 below invoice. A one way plane ticket to seattle is about $125.00 and figure about $125.00
in gas to get home. It's worth it to me.
    Here's what I want
    05 NISMO 4x4 C/C Storm Gray
    sunroof
    rockfordfosgate
    side airbags
    Traction package
    tow hitch
    floor mats
    micro filter
    Invoice $28,107.00
Dose anyone have a similar rig and what type of deal did you strike.
    Thanks

So far (checked this morning) I'm getting combo 16.9 MPG driving street and freeway; freeway speed @ 65 - 80 MPH using regular gas (87 octane). * CC LE 4x2, 1,600 miles *

The rattle wasn't bad, but now that it is fixed you can definitely tell a difference. Much quieter.

I have a 2 month old 2005 Frontier SE CC 6 speed. When I first bought it I was not very happy with the prospect of doing without keyless entry. I considered going to an outside source and having an after market keyless entry unit installed. Just finished following the above procedure and it works great. I would mention that you do need to lock the doors after you get into the vehicle or the fob will not program. I am using a spare fob from a 2002 Xterra that I traded on the Frontier. Thanks Woodshop28 !

Been reading the chats on this forum the past week or so. Trying to decide between the Frontier and Tacoma. Have own and driven only GMC trucks for the past 11 years.

Have decided and am getting the Nismo CC 4WD. Picking it up today from dealer.

Test drove both trucks numerous times. Impressed with both. What swayed my decision to the Frontier was the fact every time I would get into the Tacoma I knees banged into the steering wheel. With the steering wheel at its highest position. I am only 5'9". Read on the Tacoma forum of individuals 6' plus not mentioning is problem but, I did. Which was not acceptable to me. Has anybody else experienced this problem too? On test drives.

Also, read of people reporting issues of Tacoma's 4WD not engaging properly. Plus, the Tacoma has a recall on it already.

Getting mine pretty plain jane. Only option I was wanting to have was the Traction pkg. But, no dealers could located any within my region without other optional pkg. stuff I did not want or need.

Only thing I wish that the Frontier sat a little high body wise like the Tacoma. Even though true ground clearance between the two is about the same.
  • autonutsautonuts Member Posts: 138
had the opportunity to test drive the 2.5L Frontier? I hear a lot about the 4.0L, but not anything on the 2.5L. Opinions on how it performs and maximum payload would help! Thanks!!
  • centralcalcentralcal Member Posts: 215
I had the same steering wheel problem with the Taco. I am actually thinking about a lift kit for the Frontier for you last comment. I wish is sat a little higher, not a lot, 2 or 4". Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with doing lift kits? thanks.

Thanks for the follow up. You have the same truck I do (mine's a 4x4), and I just purchased a fob off of ebay. We'll see how it goes.
  • duker51duker51 Member Posts: 3
Good to know Dan! Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be ready for the noise since I'm picking mine up on Saturday morning. I got the works! Looking forward to getting it dirty! :)

I too have been reading these forums but for months now. It's come down to four trucks: the Frontier CC 4x4, Tacoma Dcab 4x4, Tundra A-cab 4x4, or Titan K-cab 4x4.
I test drove a Tacoma Access cab, was impressed vs. the older versions, but with two little ones I realized I better step up to the Dcab/CC.
Last week I went and saw a Frontier CC 4x4 Nismo and was really impressed on looks alone. I didn't get to drive it since the dealer was closed. However, right next to it sat a Titan 4x4 Kcab XE for the same price! I like having a bigger bed too but that truck is darn big, hence the Tundra...So when it comes time buy, I guess I will see who gives me the best price for each truck then make my call.

Also haven't seen any posts about mpg in the Frontier 4x4's w/ the 6-speed and am curious to see how they compare to the autos.

    Thanks for any input.

I was considering the same trucks (in regular or extended cab versions) but ran across some limitations in the big trucks' configurations:

    - Titan only comes with automatic transmission and V8
    - Tundra can be had with 8' bed and regular cab (which appeals to me) but no 4WD with these combos, and no locking differential option (no limited-slip option for the V6, either). The V8 is only available w/automatic transmission.
    - Both trucks are big...that's a lot of wind resistance to be pushing around. The 2007 Tundra is supposed to be even bigger than the Titan. I wonder if it will actually be produced given the way gas prices are going.

I test drove Tacoma and Frontier and preferred the latter for numerous reasons (check archives of late January for detailed post). Even though you are interested in NISMO (my pick), it would be a good idea to drive both it and non-NISMO for comparison, as they have different rides as well as different equipment. I was going to test drive both TRD and non-TRD Tacomas but was so disappointed in other aspects of the truck that I did not come back for another test drive.

Remember that XE is base model and NISMO is one of the two higher-priced models, so you'd need to compare XE Frontier to XE Titan to compare apples to apples (sort of). You can get a base Tundra for about $18K while some Tacomas go for more than $30K.

Around here, the newspaper ads don't even list the 2005 Tacomas' and Frontiers' prices. In fact, I've only seen a couple of ads that ever mentioned their being available at all. Meanwhile, prices are being dropped by 1000s on full-size trucks, including Tundra and Titan. Some of the discounts go to $11K below MSRP--those trucks must be loaded up with every package and option possible.

If you are still shopping next month, look for my post about gas mileage. I ordered a NISMO KC 4WD 6-spd which supposedly arrives next month.

When I got the VIN of my ordered 2005 Frontier, I called my insurance co. (GEICO) to get a rate quote. Expensive! I know it's a new model, no history established yet, etcetc, but it still seems very high given that I have a clean driving record and am a middle-aged homeowner with exc. credit history (yes, apparently that is taken into account when determining auto insurance rates).

The first-year rate for my (now-sold) 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport was about $75/month and the rate for the same coverage on the Frontier will be $125/month, just to give you an idea.

Those of you who have bought already, or are comparing rates, have you found that different insurance companies "like" or "dislike" a particular brand/model, or do all of them generally charge high rates for a given model? Yeah, I'll be calling around, too, but would like to hear if anybody has recommendations.
  • centralcalcentralcal Member Posts: 215
I was kind of shocked with the insurance as well. I am with All-State. Single male, home-owner (with same company, get discount), clean record and I pay $100 a month. Seemed very high for all the safety features. I carry full coverage. I guess with the weight/size of truck, if you get in a wreck you are going to cause some damage to the other car? Don't know, but I was dissappointed. I didn't check out the cost of other trucks before I bought.
  • bricker1bricker1 Member Posts: 11
Just got a quote for insurance on a Frontier CC 4x4 LE. With a $1000 deductible, full coverage, $320 every six months. I have a good driving record and I'm a single 38 year old male. That is also with the ABLS. I saw some posts that worried me about insurance , so i got a quote as soon as I could. I just ordered my Forntier last Saturday.

    Hi all,

I checked these forums a couple months ago for various info on the new Frontiers, and finally bought one about three weeks ago! Here's some info I found useful when I was still shopping around...

    Storm Gray NISMO 4x2
avg. 18.5 mpg (even split city, highway driving)
    insurance not too bad
got it for $250 over invoice
rides like a dream on unmaintained roads that comprise a part of my daily commute

    Question:
It came with a removable bed liner, not the spray in kind. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Thanks for the help, past, present, future.
  • dbk2005dbk2005 Member Posts: 2
    By the way,

I've been playing the the odometer features, especially the MPG calculator.

The highest number I've seen on it is 27.2 mpg. That's highway driving, reset after getting up to speed, and probably a little downhill with wind at my back.

On that particular trip, all highway through a city, I got about 24-25 mpg.
  • morphismorphis Member Posts: 3
Only 3 days old now. Can not give a complete report on my new Frontier CC 4x4 Nismo. Still too early. Going to have to get use to a little less storage space with the Frontier vs. what I had with my previous GMC Sierra Ext. Cab. 4X4.

On your insurance question. I only saw a approx. $30 increase every 6 months going to the Frontier. $371/6 months. That's with renters / auto discounts here in NE Wisconsin. But, I also
have it designated at 3 miles or less for commute to work. That's with "American Family Ins."

I was seriously considering a Frontier until I test drove one... It had less leg room than my 97 S-10! I am a big man, not huge, but big (6'1", 240 lbs). I pushed the seat all the way back, and then noticed that my leg rubbed between the door and the steering wheel. Also, while driving, I felt I would cause an accident if I tried to pull the visor down. Even the salesman noticed how bad it was...

I don't want to start an argument. I just want to issue a warning to the larger folk out there: check out the roominess of the different pickups out there!
  • centralcalcentralcal Member Posts: 215
That is interesting. I am 6'1" 210. From the midsized trucks, I thought it was the best, but definetely not as much as a full size. The first time I got in one, I had the same impression, but did you adjust the seat? When it come off the truck, the seat was way up. Once I adjusted it and tilted the steering wheel, I thought it was great. You aren't much bigger than me, so your comments suprise me.

Does anyone know anything about the Tonneau covers offered on theses two websites?
There is such a big price difference between the two websites that i thought i might be missing something. I like the idea of having a zipper to access bed from either side or corner.
They say they are genuine nissan parts for the 2005 Frontier. Would appreciate any feedback.

I had seen these also. I would think the more expensive one is actually the hard tonneau cover and is just mislabeled (that is the price for it). Probably have to call to find out for sure
  • maxvenummaxvenum Member Posts: 39
I adjusted it all the way back for sure. For grins, I sat in one of the Crew Cabs for comparison, but it was the exact same. The visor thing might be because of my torso. Most of my height is in my torso. For my height, I have short legs (I wear pants with a 32 or 34" inseam).

After that, I was really concerned that the Toyota Tacoma would be the same way (at that point, I was only considering those two trucks), so rushed out to the nearest Toyota dealership to sit in the cab. I actually had to pull the seat forward a couple of notches to be able to get the clutch in comfortably!

That really disappointed me, but it made my decision between the two trucks very easy...
  • bricker1bricker1 Member Posts: 11
Your probably right. I appreciate your feedback.

1:A spray in bedliner will last for ever and it binds to the bed and it wont shift and mess up you pait if you have a load in the bed, things have a way of shifting regaurdless how good you tie them down.

2:A plastic bedliner will shift and will not keep out the water frome getting under the bed, witch will cause rust and will cause you bed to rot and it will also make you lose your truck value.A few of my friends have cracked but mine hasn't yet.But I'm going to buy my new Fronty soon,I'm getting it with all the bells and whistles CC-LE V6.

Get the spray bedline it also increass the value of your truck and it looks sharp, some auto shops by me do sprayliners in different colors its and its pretty wild!!!

    Hope this helps you out
    Good luck

I can't afford a full-size truck, but thanks for the suggestion. The Tacoma is roomy enough. The Frontier could have had enough room had they designed it better... There is space in the cab...
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
Yes, I sure hope they have the hard cover price at the softcover spot on the autowebaccessories site! I want a soft tonneau too, especially if I see that it will allow the bed extender to at least be fixed in the rearmost position.

I see the body side moldings on the website too:

    999G2-BR101SC, 999G2-BR102SC, 999G2-BR101SK and 999G2-BR102SK.

I'll want these for my 4x2 SE CC when I decide to get it. I wonder what the four part numbers reference? I'm guessing the "SC" is for Crew, but that leaves two choices. I wonder if they're offered in limited body colors or what.

    Asa
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
I'm 6' even and I must move the SE CC seat all the way to the rear of its travel for comfortable 6-Speed shifting, but it's fine at that point. Chevy Colorado seems to give me a tad more legroom than Frontier and Colorado CC definitely has more legroom in back. Sure wish Nissan would have given the SE the seats with a basic manual lumbar knob and elevation knob. I mean, that's a dumb corner to cut.

I have a question about the cabin filter. Is this merely the filter only, or does an '05 Fronty ordered with this feature add a filter frame and hardware. In other words, if I get a Fronty without the cabin filter, can I just buy a filter and have the full feature? Thanks.

I just answered my own question about the Body Side Moldings -- yes, they sold in the various body colors. Found a nice website at:

    http://www.courtesyparts.com/

I see also that the *Titan's* soft tonneau is not compatible with the bed extender; looking like Frontier's *could* suffer the same.

I have had my NISMO for three weeks and it says I am averaging 17.8 miles per gallon.
This is regular driving with no highway miles.

4X4? If so, that is very good.
  • midnightsunmidnightsun Member Posts: 92
I've owned 3 trucks with drop-in bedliners. These all seem to be some kind of hard plastic or plastic-like material. The spray-on liners might vary more in softness/hardness, surface, strength, and other aspects.

However, I'd guess that the drop-in liners offer more protection from dents--if the liner is damaged, you just replace it. Downside is that the liners themselves could vibrate and eventually cause paint to be worn off the bed itself. My current truck's bedliner has some gouges in it but nothing that went through or cracked. Previous bedliners stayed in great shape. I had toppers sitting on all 3 bedliners (bedliners lipped over the bedrails).

Spray-on liners probably don't protect as well from denting but they do not damage the bed itself. If you are worried about keeping the painted metal bed in pristine shape, it might be best to use a spray-on liner and install hard rubber mats or other intermediary as needed (when carrying certain types of loads). (This is what I plan to do with my Frontier.) Truck supply stores sell all kinds of interesting bed mats. Or you could make your own.
