I've watched my dad at many a car dealerships make it so simple. And believe me, the salespeople while at first taken back, admit at the end, it's one of the easiest deals they've made. Either they can make the deal, or they can't. And they've always made the deal. I have never been to a dealership where we made an offer (out the door price) on a car, and had the dealership not take it. This is even for a custom ordered Benz direct from Germany. Getting it for under invoice.

I would think 1000 below should be easily had for a base Jetta. Again I would recommend however you focus more on an out the door price, and not a base price, as dealers will try to move the fees around to make their profit.
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
well then that makes it a 10 min or less process basically. I give them a #, they take it or deny it and i move on.....

what if i finance with VW? because they will also make profits off my interest right?
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
It is a quick process right. I explained my total time was maybe 20-30 minutes after we sat down having decided to buy the car.

As for the interest, I've already talked about it, it all depends on what rate you get, and what rate you could get from putting it into a bank. I'd refer to my previous post. But there isn't a difference in sales price between paying cash and financing
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
well if you are paying interest the OTD price is higher at the end. cost of ownership
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
it depends on the interest rate...like i said...you could have a 1.9 or 3.9 interest rate, yet easily make above 5% in a savings account with the rest of your money you 'saved' temporarily by not paying cash. This difference leads you to a lower 'cost of ownership' in the end
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
but the point is to make the 5% in a savings account + not pay interest on a car!

I have to get a car in one week. I really like the Jetta, I am trying to get the base Jetta and pay cash for it, I am staring over and don't want monthly payments and interests, I visited the Lewisville, TX car dealer and they were pushy to get me to sign papers or keep it over night, I am a bit intimidated and overwhelmed, my ex always did the car deals for me. I don't think they gave this petite woman the best deal! I would really appreciate you input on few things:
    1-Base jetta vs diesel jetta 06 ?
2-What should I be asking for drive away price?
3- Any recommended good dealers in the DFW area?
    Thank you guys so much.
    Hope

I just got a couple of reply e-mails from dealers, I asked them what is their invoice price for the car I am interested in, one of them is saying they are selling them for $1795 over MSRP "being that they are not going to produce the car for another year and 4 months we are not selling cars at invoice" and one said the MSRP + A market adjustments!! no invoice prices, are they BS me?
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
I'm not sure about the diesel jetta market, since they won't be back on the market for another year or so, and with gas prices going up, but on a regular jetta you should be easily able to get it at invoice if not below. Also the diesel jetta's are already a year old, so I would try a couple of other dealers. Maybe www.carsdirect.com to find a good starting point on the diesel. Bottom line, if it's not the diesel (which has special market forces), then invoice or better should be your target.

    I might look http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=142

They have a message forum for asking a VW salesmen. They can locate dealers in your area which have the exact car you want, and maybe suggest a good dealer.

I called a dealer and offered to buy a Jetta Wolfsburg for 10% under sticker price (which equates to about $1000 under invoice). They told me they would be losing money. Others have posted on this board that they get this deal. Please explain how a dealer could make such a sale.
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
they probably bought on last day of month and/or the dealer had to meet certain quotas to get a bonus. gotta get lucky
  • shana2shana2 Member Posts: 10
Thank you so much. I contacted a dealer via e-mail told him I will pay cash OTD $17.000 for a 2007 base Jetta. and this was his response : "Impossible to do...These cars invoice for $18,006....With no incentives on the car, it makes it impossible to buy for $17000 + ttl, that more impossible and unrealistic at $17000 otd..Where did you get $17000 from?"
Is that possible, or is he just jerking me around because I am a woman? that base jetta is listed on edmunds at MSRP $17.565 and invoice $16.959. should I stick to this price and look somewhere else or should I raise the price? thanks

Edmunds clearly indicates the "Destination" charges are not included in their pricing...I have never understood that because 'destination charges' are the same coast to coast for each manufacturer...Some will be more; some will be less, but Destination on a Jetta will be the same in Maine or Arizona.

The items that Edmunds also does not include are such things as Regional Advertising Fees and Port Preperation.
These fees are part of what the Dealer pays for the car. The
reason for the deletion of the Ad Fees is due to the fact that these numbers do vary geographically...as Edmunds so states.

Edmunds has been very thorough about posting incentives over the years; so if none are posted, they do not exist.

It sounds like the dealer that you contacted via email was rather forthcoming and candid. Try going back and finding some common ground...Negotiation is compromise. Each side must find some benefit.

all i am asking is $500 below invoice.

they are charging me vin echt fee for $500 all this other crap...

Edmunds includes the destination charge.. if you go ahead and navigate to the next page..

Though, I agree... the price on the first page should have the price, including destination.. Mildly irritating..

I recently purchased a 2007 base Jetta (w/automatic transmission)...no additional options. This was in the Boston area. The OTD price was $18560. To break it down, the car was $17400 ($16760 + $640 destination fee), plus state tax ($870), plus title/registration/inspection ($115), plus the documentation fee ($175) = $18560.

I contacted about 7 or 8 dealerships in the area and no other dealership would match that price (most would go as low as $17500+tax+fees, etc.). Since this is the beginning of the month, I would imagine you may be able to do a little better towards the end of the month but I'm not sure if you can do as well as $17000 OTD (although I think you might be talking manual so you may be able to get manual for that price).

Also, Edmunds was right on with the MSRP of this car, which was $18205, so if the dealer is telling you the MSRP of the car is more than what you see on Edmunds the car may have some add ons (floor mats, spoiler, etc.), so you may want to confirm that if these aren't things that you need.

As far as rebates, I've been searching this car for a few months and I don't think the 2007s have ever had any cash rebates (I've only seen some low financing options, which I was told aren't offered with the base model). I think the 2006s used to have a $3000 rebate but I think that offer may be over now?
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
yeah..i would think a price of 16k-16.2k plus TTL would be a good deal assuming an MSRP of 17,565 as you stated. Were you looking at a manual or auto? Also the OTD price would depend on the state tax %. But I think 17k roughly should be a good deal, maybe 17.2k MAX. My rule of thumb is to take 10-12% off the MSRP to get a starting price, then add your own tax, title, license, etc to get a good OTD price. The key to be firm.
  • shana2shana2 Member Posts: 10
The base jetta at one dealer auto, MSRP was 18390 discounted to 17651 (internet deal) then they added
VIN 199.00-Doc fee 50.00-tax 1115.00-non tax fees 71.00-T&T 95.00 . the total was 19182.00. is it possible that the MSRP can differ from state to state? (I'm in TX)
would then 17,800 to 18,000 be a good OTD price?( using your formula w/10% off his msrp)

    Thank you so much.
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
ok how did you pull off this deal? I am in Houston and these dealerships dont even want to talk to me when I mention ur OTD price. Did you get the value edition or the base? not the 2.5l.
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
they jack up the prices on title and registration..there are 'other' fees that they add
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
if you got them down to around 17k as a base price, as opposed to 17651, that should be pretty good...not sure about the rest of those fees. I know they vary from state to state
  • uservwuservw Member Posts: 6
I never talked OTD price when negotiating. I know a lot of people on the boards have recommended doing that but I didn't really have a lot of success with that method. In the end I just figured out what I wanted to pay OTD as the tax, registration, etc. should all be standard amounts. I then just decided if the dealer fees were over a certain amount I wouldn't purchase the car.

If you see some unusual fees in there you always have the option to walk away and check with another dealership (sometimes even the threat of leaving will make them take the fees off). Like I said, during the whole process I checked a good amount of dealers in the area to make sure the price was on target. The morning of I called a few dealerships to say I was looking to buy the car that day and could they go any lower. Most said this was a great deal and they could not beat it so I went ahead with it.

And yes this was the base value edition (not base 2.5). I wasn't interested in getting any additional options so that one made more sense since I was more concerned with the price and you aren't losing many features by going with the value edition.
  • vwguild1vwguild1 Member Posts: 98
Base MSRP (no options) is the same coast to coast...Options cost also the same...obviously some have more, Automatic v. Manual, for example.

Your listing of Fees is confusing, could you repost with more clarity...No abbreviations.
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
i want the base jetta with 16" alloy wheels at 18500 OTD..is that possible?
  • shana2shana2 Member Posts: 10
Is it?? the base jetta auto I already saw at one car dealer is MSRP $ 18390.00 auto, another one is listed 17565 (2.5L 6AT) and another is $18205 (5Cyl/2.5L)is there differences between these cars? as for the fees, I wrote them exactly as it shows on the paper given to me, I know the tax(1115.63) and Tag/title (95.30) and the vin etch (199.00) he said that one is already on the window so I have to pay for it, but I don't know the other two: the documents fee of (50)and the non tax fees (71.38). and two dealers said they will sell me a used car for 17000 ( one have 14k on it and the other have 20k). this is the first time I buy a car by myself, ands it's stressing..
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
i'm guessing auto......at that price yuo might be pushing..assuming a base purchase price of 17k..then taxes which will vary depending on state...plus tags and title..and then the extra for the wheels
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
they might have added on extra items to the car, but the MSRP should be the same...as for those fees...vin etch(199.00) is completely stupid...i know dealers that don't do that, and there is no way it's worth 200 for that...it's a dealer add on, that the car doesn't come with standard. I feel bad because it seems like they are trying to take you for a quick buck.

i would stay away from the used cars.....they don't seem like a good deal at all from what you've said
  • sammya_mdsammya_md Member Posts: 69
Yeah, it all depends on preference. I really don't care if the dealer has a $500 add on fee for example, if I'm getting $500 off the price of the car. That's why I do OTD, and just tell the dealers, make the numbers work however you want. This is my price. Hasn't given me any trouble at all. And we haven't had to shop around, just go into the local dealership, make it clear we will buy today if they met the price, and it was done.
  • vwguild1vwguild1 Member Posts: 98
You need to check out the number at the top of the sticker where it say "Base Price" the number at the bottom includes the options on the car as well as Destination Charge.

There is a "Base Model" & the 2.5L...They are priced differently.

Do not pay for the "Etch". The VIN is stamped into the car at different points around 20+/- times. It does not matter if it is etched or not...Do not pay for it.

I do not know what the other $71.38 in fees is for, but it is just $71 bucks...Do get an explaination though.

And stay with the new cars and not the "Used".

Finally, if you like the car, and if they have a few of them...Go back after work on the 30th...5:30/6:00PM You will be amazed how the situation will change...They should be more than helpful...And go with a comfort level that if you can make the numbers work you will drive home in a new car...nothing inspires a dealer to sharpen his pencil more than a committed customer on the last day of the month. ;)
  • uservwuservw Member Posts: 6
Yes I agree, OTD does make more sense (definitely less variables involved), might be a good strategy for my next car :).
  • esteezeesteeze Member Posts: 102
What is a "reasonable" price for a new 06 Jetta TDI with the package 2 option?

It's hard for me to get a good feel for these figures from the Edmunds tools, since a "new" 06 kind of falls into a gray area (not a new model, but not used either).
  • sixpakgqsixpakgq Member Posts: 34
Ok, they are giving me the value edition 2.5 2007 black exterior with 16" bioline alloy wheels for $18,925.20!......
looks like VW is giving them special incentives to sell this at a special price. on top of this they are charging me $600 for alloy wheels and the msrp 400. so thats how they are making money......I think I am going to buy this!

16999 was their price. + 600 for alloy which brings to 17599 +TTL and OTD is $18,925.20!

Looking at either 2007 GLI or 2.0T (don't think the GTI is for me)in the Northwest:

    Package 2.

What would be a great price? Also, opinions on GLI vs 2.0T?

    Thanks!

Hi everyone, first I want to thank all of you who responded to my earlier post about the Jetta I was acquiring about, all your posts were so helpful, you can’t imagine!! I am so softy and push over sometimes, and you gave me the courage to walk out of one dealer after 3 hours there, smiling and shaking his hand, never the less, he asked more than what I was willing to pay, I did end up buying a Honda Civic though after comparing with the Jetta, I know other folks here paid between $18200 to $18500 OTD for the civic LX auto sedan, so armed with this information and refusing (gently, may I add) to pay for the adds on that was already on the car, I left there with my new car with 3 adds on from the dealer for the total amount of $18700. ( the invoice was $18355 ) I am sure he made money too or he would have agreed at end. I also decided to get the extended warranty since I am keeping this car for $ 1140 ( since I am a newly single mom and didn’t want to mess with repairs down the road with my low income pay check ) right after the 3 years period( isn’t funny how that works) I am sure I could have got it for little less on line as some mentioned, but he says I would had to pay money to inspected first, and a couple hundred dollars were not worth the hassle, did I make you proud? Was that a fair deal?
Thank you so much again, I would have not been able to stick very close to my number without you, and I would have paid almost $1500 more for
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
Who told you this nonsense? I'd cancel that warranty from that dealer and buy it online for a cheaper price. Ask some of the others in here, but I think you were lied to on this.
Hey guys, let's help this nice lady out here. Am I wrong about the dealer lying to her about the warranty? Should she cancel it and buy it online from those cheaper Honda warranty sellers?

    The Sandman :)

Got a deal on the Jetta Wolfsburg. Black exterior and beige interior with the rubber mats kit for $20.4K

So OTD before tax with reg etc will be approx 20.6K
We will finance at the 4 yr 3.9% mark.

    A good deal? :confuse:

    Cheers.
  • lonestarlawyerlonestarlawyer Member Posts: 2
You got a better deal than I.

I paid 21.5 for a 2007 Wolfsburg this week...put 7,000 down and financed the rest at 2.9 for 3 years.

I got a black one, too.

You beat my deal by 1,100 bucks it seems....KUDOS!!!

However, I did get them to kick in a window tint for free...(not worth much, just about 250.00 or so).

I had a GREAT buying experience with a super kick-[non-permissible content removed] salesman who was TOTALLY low-pressure and fun to chat with during the process. His attitude was low-key like the cars would sell themselves...he just knew from the get-go that I would be back to buy the Jetta - and I did.

I bought an extended warranty due to my high mileage commute of about 110 miles a day, so I'm covered for 100,000 miles vs. 50,000. It was probably a sucker warranty, but for an extra thousand bucks, it gives me a little more piece of mind.

Has anyone gotten the Wolfsburg with the ground-effects and rim package? I almost got it, but it seemed ridiculous for another 3K. If so, are you happy with the ground clearance?

My only complaint thus far is that the Wolfsburg doesn't come with the steering wheel stereo controls. Other than that, it is VERY well equipped.

    :)

    Hey Lonestar

I guess im lucky that NY has so many dealerships and wolfsburgs in stock. They were all willing to goto invoice price plus some nominal mini fees that i laughed at. I did the 3.9% financed the whole thing. fees registration and everything. Ill prob chip away at the principal amount in the next 6 months or so. Ill prob aim to off load in less than 18 months for something new but that depends on the missus as its her commuter ride to work and will get paid mileage.

    Awful quiet in here...

Is anyone looking at the "new" TDIs?
  • martinfmartinf Member Posts: 121
Check through this forum or the extended warranty forum on edmunds.com. I bought a 2007 Toyota Camry for my mother last April and bought a 7yr/75,000 mile/0 Deductible Toyota Platinum extended warranty from Midwest Toyota (Kansas) for only $575 and the original San Diego, CA selling dealer wanted $1400! You can buy the extended warranty from any dealership. There was no inspection or fee associated with getting the warranty elsewhere with Toyota. If you would like to save a little money, call Honda Financial and just ask them if an inspection is necessary on a new car under factory warranty. You can also ask them the procedure for cancelling the one you got and what the time frame is. Toyota's time frame was 60 days with no cancellation charge. I would imagine it would be the same or similar for Honda. This may very well save you several hundred dollars.
    Good luck!

I'm seeking advice on prices for the VW Jetta wolfsburg. I haven't seen many posts here about prices paid. I believe I'm being quoted 20.1K. Has anyone been able to negotiate below this? I'm going for the lowest price possible. :confuse:
  • storrnycstorrnyc Member Posts: 28
Personally id jump at that. We visited about 6/7 dealships in the NY area and best price i could negotiate was 20.4K. Go get the deal and split the diff with me. :)

Do you guys think I could get a new base model jetta automatic (no options) under 19K OTD?? I'm in California

I will be trading in my 2004 Ford Expedition (xls - just the base model).. I'm hoping to get around 13K on it do you think that is a little wishful?
  • uservwuservw Member Posts: 6
I'd say it's possible. If you read a few pages back I got a base jetta automatic for $18560 OTD about a month ago but I'm in the Boston area though so I'm not sure how different your pricing is in CA.

Is $17000 OTD a good price for an 07 Jetta base model with no options and a manual? I think it's about $15500 for only the car. Could I get it any cheaper?

    Hi all,
I'm new to, well, car buying, and posting about car buying. I'm debating between an end-of-lease purchase for my 2204 Jetta for around 10k or buying a 2007 Subaru Forester for around 21k. My main concern is safety, it rains a ton where I'm going and I want to make sure I have the safest car.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

At the dealer I was told the only difference between the "Wolfsberg" and the "Sport Edition" is the chrome strip around the windows, however I also figured out the sport has 17" wheels as apposed to 16" on the Wolfsberg. I am looking at $22,500 OTD, including tax, license.. The only extra is the rear spoiler. I have looked everywhere on the internet and can't find anything about pricing for the "Sport". Please let me know if this is a good deal. I live by Sacramento, CA, tax rate 7.5%. Thank.
