Has anyone tried applying some of x-runner's 'technology' to a extended or d-cab trd sport 4x4?

Such as the x-brace, frontal diagonal brace, or the 30mm stabilizer bar?

Mahalo for the replies. Our local dealer in Hawaii is promising a high top sometime in Oct - Nov. Thanks for the leer link, I'll follow up.

I went out and bought my 2005 DC 4X4 Tacoma without even thinking about the competition because I am a loyal Toyota customer. After reading the Ridgeline reviews/comments on this forum I thought maybe it was a mistake to not consider the competition. So, with my wife wanting a 4r door truck, I decided to check out the Honda. The first truck (or is it) I checked in at 35K. The first thing I checked out was the dual action tailgate. New technology works just like our 73 chevy wagon. Salesman then pointed out the nice trunk. Asked how you get the spare tire out when you have a load in the bed. He said that most people don't carry a load. Why have a truck? I know I would have a flat tire when the bed was full and I would be unloading a bed full of stuff on the freeway. That is user friendly. Next we discussed towing. He said that Honda has a 5K towing capacity from the factory while the Tacoma has a 1500 pound capacity without an added package. I then pointed out that none of the trucks on the lot had a hitch. Of course not. You have to add that for about a grand. So it does not have any towing capacity from the factory. Nice leather seats and dual climate control in the front. Is my wife really going to have her half of the truck that much warmer than me when we are 3 feet apart? The bottom line is that I spent 6K less and missed out on a sunroof, a trunk and a larger bed. I spent $600 to get a trailer that hauls more, go out to my old junker when I want to experience the dual action rear door and trunk and I enjoy the extra cash in my pocket.

Just bought a 2005 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner 2wd automatic. Love it. Only thing is is that it seems to be a bit rought when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and when it is down shifting and reaches about 30-32 MPH. Anybody else experience this? Any cause for concern? I called the dealer where I bought it from and they said that was pretty natural for Toyotas. Don't know whether to believe them or not. Thanks!

    Hi,

I was offered the Toyota Platinum Extended Service Warranty for $1,150.00 which the finance guy claimed to be almost half of retail or like he said "dealer cost". The platinum covers most everything that does not have to do with regular wear and tear with zero deductible.

If anyone else purchased extended warranties, could you post how much you paid and what kind so that we can see what a "real deal" is?

    Thanks,

    Christy
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
Mine shifts the same. I was told that it was normal. Not sure if I believe them entirely though. I have 10,300 miles on it and it shifted that way from new. It hasen't given me any trouble so I just have accepted it for now.
  • bro45usbro45us Member Posts: 36
sorry Christy but it looks like you got ripped off big time
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
That's too much. If you got it cancel! You can get the 7yr/100K Platinun for about $850.
  • barkbeetlebarkbeetle Member Posts: 9
    WOW THANKS.

Luckily I have not purchased the warranty yet but with the comments I am getting, I will certainly bargain down to the 800 dollar range. Just in case it makes a difference, I bought the 05 DC 4x4. Any more dollar amounts you have all paid would be very helpful to hear before I go into dealership to negotiate. The biggest pain in the butt for all of this, I am only buying this because I have had too many problems since the day I drove it off the lot! Thanks for the helpful info. And on top of it all... they were trying to sell me a 75k mile 7 year deal vs. the 7yr/100k that I didn't even know about. UGH!
    Thanks so much, Christy

Do your headlights go out when you turn off the engine, or when you turn off the engine and open the driver's door? Mine don't go out until the engine is off _and_ the driver's door is opened. I didn't realize this until I read it in the owner's manual so I had been in the habit of turning off the headlights and not using them during the day as DRL, but now that I know this is the behaviour, I just leave them on all the time.

Following up on a message on June 28 where I reported a problem I had with the ABS on my new Tacoma. My vevhicle is a 2005 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 Automatic with Sport Package, ordered late February, delivered June 9.

I have had an ABS problem which first started after 300 km.

Symptoms were intermittent and consisted of any of the following:
    - ABS/Brake lights on
    - ABS activating while driving when brake peddle _not_ depressed
    - ABS activating while braking in dry, non-slip conditions

Toyota service people cleaned an ABS sensor. This appeared to have solved the problem.

The problem started again at about 1600 km. This time Toyota service people replaced an ABS speed sensor. Again, this appears to have fixed the problem. Hopefully it is really fixed and I can rely on my ABS working properly.

Just thought you'd all be interested, in case anyone else is having intermittent ABS problems.

Where can i find more info on this exhaust? I've looked on toyotaparts4u.com but all i saw was an exhaust tip...? Any other recommendations for exhaust?
  • pfaffpfaff Member Posts: 12
Sorry if this question is a stupid question, but what does the "auto-locking differential" have to do with the ABS kicking in? If your ABS is really kicking in when it shouldn't, you may be interested in my previous post about ABS problems. But I don't understand how ABS problems are in any way related to the locking differential (although this could certainly be due to my own ignorance about how the various mechanical and electronic systems work together). My Tacoma (4x4 double cab automatic with sport package) has the "limited slip differential", which I believe is different than the "auto-locking differential", correct?

Here is where many have bought their warranty from...

    http://www.toyotapartsworld.com/

Or through Toyota of Greenfield (which actually may be the cheapest out there..)

You could either try to get your dealer to match their prices or you could just buy it from the dealer in the link. You can buy a Toyota warranty from ANY Toyota dealership and still use it anywhere.

I have noted some occasionally abrupt downshifts in my 05 Tacoma when decelerating to a stop or coasting, but I was not sure if I was inducing it, I am used to my 5 speed Mazda, this time I got an automatic at my wifes urging.

I received the same extended warranty FREE from Toyota . I had aproblem with my 05 Tacoma and it took Toyota 3 months to send the part. Toyota called me and asked if they could give me anything to smooth things over. I told the I would take the warranty. Received the paperwork in about a week.
  • barkbeetlebarkbeetle Member Posts: 9
Thanks so much for that information because I feel I have plenty of good reasons for Toyota to offer something like the extended warranty for the countless time and pain in the butt factor I have endured for a currently unfixed problem to this date. Its either they give me the Toyota Platinum 7yr/100k warranty for free or I will start to the undesirable talks regarding replacement for the lemon law that I already could qualify for. If you dont mind me asking, what dealership offered the compensated warranty for your troubles. If anything, I am learing that no matter what the dealership claims with pricing there is always a profit margin left for them. Thanks again, all of you may have at the very least saved me tons of money.\\christy

    Howdy!

I've had my silver double cab for about 2 months now and I've made the following observations:

No light in glove box is not a problem but how much money did Toyota save by not putting in a bed light?

This truck will run on 87 octane gas w/o engine ping, but it seems to really lose pep. Our choices in the Houston area are 87, 89, and 93 octane. I found the extra 5% for the middle grade gives me about 10% better fuel economy and the truck performs better. Haven't tried premium....don't see a need to. I am getting 19 in the city and 22.5 on the highway. I bought this truck because of its city mileage so I am very pleased so far.

I'm 6'5" tall and admit I am on the upper limit of fitting into this truck (6 lbs. of sausage in a 5 lb. sack). I have read on this forum about problems with the rear view mirror being too low and how to adjust it. That doesn't bother me as much as the low slung windshield giving me some problems seeing traffic lights without leaning forward to see them. No big deal, just different from a Ford Expedition.

I plan to keep the stock stereo / CD player and upgrade the speakers. I like the metallic look of the stock dash and all the kits don't have that yet. I plan to use Tacotunes, etc. Maybe add an amp. Any suggestions from anyone that did this?

    Awesome truck so far.

or click on Tacoma on left..then 2005..then scroll down list of parts..exhaust is near the bottom.

The offer came directly from Toyota not a dealer. Good luck.
  • searayguysearayguy Member Posts: 14
The "auto-locking differential" uses the ABS to apply brake force to the wheel that is slipping. Just as traction control works on front wheel drive cars. "limited slip" differentials use mechanical devices in the rear end to detect wheel slip. I still have the same problem, its even getting worse after the dealership calibrated the ABS. Back to the dealer this week with it.
Engine has finally stopped "ticking" after 19,000+ miles.

    In reply to volleys question:

First the obvious thing... my HAC (hill ascent control) malfunctions approximately 50% of the time including my engine cutting out while rolling backwards. And I am not talking about 4 wheeling style hills, I am only going from a stopped position up the steep hill called my driveway. Numerous alarms will start going off and loud clicking then engine kills. When it works the brakes apply as they should and I do not roll backwards. I am talking about a total distance of 3 to 5 feet backwards.

Now to the mysterious thing: When I drive on bumpy gravel roads I feel a clunky feeling in my steering column but its coming from my front suspension and the steering column is where the feeling is felt. Toyota replaced my steering column without any change to the condition. I have taken it back 3 times now and they still cant figure out where the problem exists. There is no squeaky or distinct noise coming from the the front end and only can be felt through the steering column. I test drove an identical truck off the lot and its as solid as a rock.

I also have a strange faint ticking noise coming from under my steering wheel in the dash somewhere that for some reason the technicians cannot hear. Funny thing is... everyone else that I have listen for it can hear it no problem.

I have been driving Toyotas since 1989 and am loyal Toyota owner so I am sure my bad experience is an exception to the rule. Between the windshield, power steering, paint chipping and the numerous other common issues with this 2005 truck others are having, I hope they do the right thing and get it all worked out.

I just want my $30,000 dollar truck to be solid and defect free.

With all that said, I think its only fair that Toyota work with me by offering the security of either a free 7yr/100k warranty or at least meet me halfway.

Thanks to everyone who has provided information.

    Christy

Obviously I got taken to the cleaners on my warranty. ! paid $2195 for the Platinum 7/75K with a $50 deductable. The guy in MA is offering it for $880. I took this info to the dealer (have only had the truck 5 weeks) to see what they could do. They wouldn't even offer $100 off the price with the info in front of them. I would have taken a $1200 price just because it is financed, but they said take the price we have or we will cancel it and you can go elsewhere, but I have to wait until November to cancel. I don't know if the dealership gets their cut after 3 months even if the contract is cancelled or what, but it is starting to sound real corrupt right now. I think they did some manupulating with Toyota Finance that will come back to bite them (and maybe me) if they cancel right now. All I can say is that if you are in the NW, avoid Titus Will Toyota/Ford until this is fixed. Also, they sold me LOJACK (a system that tracks the vehicle if stolen), which the finance guy told me straight up would be operational nationwide within a year. Of course after installing it, the company gave me information that states that it will not be nationwide for as much as 10 years. It is good if I get it stolen from my front yard (where I have another vehicle to drive), but if I am in Beach, ND (where I would be stranded), I am on my own because the system does not, and will not work until after the truck has worn out.

Just got a slamming deal on a set of the 16 inch rims with the B.F. Goodrich 265/70 tires on them brand new from a new truck. Paid 699.00 for all. Anyway my question is will the B.F. Goodrich All Terrain T.K.O. 265/75 tire fit with no problem or mods. Because I have heard nothing but complaints about other tires.
  • paratrooper82paratrooper82 Member Posts: 41
So it was you who won that auction on e-bay, good for you buddy. Somebody's selling their Stock TRD front shocks for 100 bucks, you might want to check into those too.
  • ustazzafustazzaf Member Posts: 311
Going from a 70 series to 75 series is going to do nothing but raise your truck a half inch (on a 265 tire, not over all tire sizes). The tires will fit the rim just fine. People are running 265/75/17s with no problem, and they are around an inch bigger than 16s (a 265/70 16 BFG may actually be only a half inch different than a 265/70 17 Goodyear Wrangler, ect...). My Taco has plenty room to add 17s, so if you have a 4X4, I would feel confident with the mod.

I have owned my 05 DC 4x4 LB for a little over a week now. The only issue I have is the clunk as mentioned in another post by Barkbeetle. It is strange.....I can go down a gravel road or potholed pavement and not experience the clunk, unless I hit a hole with each of the front tires at the same time. It seems to show up when I hit washboard terrain.....everytime.

Is this normal? Is there a fix for this.....or is this a design flaw?

So far I am extremely pleased with this truck. My previous truck was a 98 Taco ext. cab TRD 4x4. There is really no comparison in the two.......but will my 05 hold up as well as my 98?????

    Thanks for listening.
  • barkbeetlebarkbeetle Member Posts: 9
I am so glad that I am not the only one with this issue. Briant, I test drove another toyota of the same model and it does not do the clunk thing. And yes, Its really obvious on the washboard gravel road but mostly at slower speeds.

If anyone reading these posts has any input to this, maybe we can tell the technicians how to fix our truck.

Boy I am glad that we can vent to each other and get things resolved!

Support Group. LOL. My wife thought I was being too picky :confuse:

I hope someone has some answers for us.

You are correct about the "slower speeds". That is the only time I feel it in my truck. My build date was late August from Freemont, CA.

It seems like the "Clunk" would be an obvious problem......I guess not, as yours has been checked out three times by the dealership.

    Anyone with any ideas?

Christy.....please let me know if you find a solution....I will do the same.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Interesting Brian,

My build date is similar to yours and from the California plant.... Maybe we are on to something like that factory was using something defective or their machinery (robots) were out of calibration.

I have another appointment with Toyota (Doxon Toyota in Auburn, Washington) with their so called "expert technician" and the pacific northwest district manager.

My appointment is for next week and I will certainly post their latest findings!

I only wonder how many of us with the similar problem are out there. I may have never of thought anything of it had I not test drove another truck (test drove it from the dealer lot) like mine over the bumps I feel with my current truck. And, I traded in my 02 DC Limited Tacoma and never felt anything but solid.

For information purposes, I have the DC with Sport Package #2 short bed with about the maximum as far as the options go.

    I will keep you posted!

About the clunk from the front end people are talking about are these manual or auto trannys? My 2002 manual taco had a washboard clunk and it turned out to be a clutch pedal bouncing against the hard stop. Do a simple experiment, while going across some bumps that you know makes the noise try doing it again with the clutch pedal depressed.

IMO You need to cal Toyota about this now - or at least read the contract carefully.
I don't yet have the Toy contract, but I do have the Honda on our other vehicle. Most of the contracts can be surrendered free (no penalty) within a certain time period -after that, there's a penalty - supposedly to cover the svc you had to date, but it's not usually proportional. (Particularly since you have a 3/36 that covers defects anyway.)

Sounds to me like they want to wait until you're rotatably fastened to the wall.
Check the contract details carefully w/ regard to cancelling.

    Mine is an automatic.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
USTAZZAF - Holy chizzit! They did take you to the cleaners. Sorry. Two things. First look in the paperwork of your warranty. There should be a number in there to call. Call it RIGHT AWAY and cancel your policy. The dealer is full of it. Yo do NOT have to wait to cancel it. Call today because you are right near the limit of the full refund. Even if you have to pay a small fee to cancel you will still get enough $$ back to buy two warranties! The only bad thing is it is still wrapped up in your payment... Second, as for the LOJACK, you MAY be able to get some type of arbitration for if seeing as though the dealership misrepresented it. Worth a shot...

BARKBEETLE - That is some seriously bad luck with your truck. I must agree that it sounds like just a bad seed and not typical Toyota. The malfunctioning Hill Assist could be a serious safety concern. I would personally either lemon law it and get yourself and 06 Tacoma or push Toyota to buy it back from you and still get an 06. At the VERY least I would demand the extended warranty...FREE OF CHARGE.
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
Mine does it on occasion as well. They keep telling me that is the way the transmission is designed. I plan on driving this truck for a long time and I am concerned with its longevity. I have always had automatic transmissions in my trucks and I have to say that this one is a little unusual. Maybe I am just not used to toyota transmissions. I have owned all fords up to this point.
  • dcab1dcab1 Member Posts: 15
Well after 3 days in the shop the tech found out the noise he and I heard was the floating brakes they used on these trucks,to quiet the noise, there is a thick (grease) you put on the alignment pin. this did quiet the noise down. If you place your foot on the break lightly the noise is gone. :(
  • barkbeetlebarkbeetle Member Posts: 9
bro45us-- mine is an automatic too. Also, regarding the contract and price proportioning and all that, I do not have a financial contract with Toyota, I used a private loan institution. So as far as Toyota cares... I paid cash for the truck but they are aware that I am standing by on initiating the lemon law for Washington State.

This just sucks, I love toyota and I have been driving tacomas since the late 90's. I just want it to work

Also, you bet you bippy that I will be negotiating (demanding) a free 7ry/100k just in case this truck truly is a lemon but lets hope not.

You all have been very helpful so far but keep the advice or knowledge coming!!!

Would have to differ with you on the Wade bug deflector. I've got a Prerunner and commute 100 miles per day. I'm constantly scrubbing bugs off my windshield. Nothing like the very few bugs that landed on my Ranger's windshield. I had an old fashioned straight-up version on that and it worked better. Very old-fogey though.

Anyone have problems with wind noise coming from the rear area of an access cab Tacoma? The noise appears above 60mph. I may have a leaking sliding rear window.

Have you heard anything from Toyota on parts to upgrade the clutch and resolve the squeaking?

I am about to schedule my second replacement clutch. Still no re-engineered design available. Squeaks and moves laterally.

Just curious if anyone bought those wiring diagrams that were on ebay. The seller pulled them before I placed a bid and I need a set to try to figure out how to engage the locker in 4HI. It can't be that complicated, but frankly I am lazy and don't feel like probing around with a multimeter for hours to figure it out.

Has anyone used the Donahoe coilovers in there 2005 Tacoma 4x4, and would anybody recommend it, or not recommend it

I noticed that the 2005/6 has no side window defrost. Anyone have an opinions on this? Like how does it affect driving, does it take a long time to get the windows defrosted with just the front defroster?
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
You can get them if you subscribe to Tundra Solutions. You'll get the diagrams plus a whole lot more info as a subscriber.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Some have them over on TTORA. They are great! If you are going to do a LOT of offroading I wouldn't hesitate to go with them. If you only do light to moderate off roading or non at all I would go with the SAWs (Sway-a-ways). A great price IMO.

Hi....I have the same Taco as you, bought it a couple of months ago. Regarding the stereo updrade, I decided against replacing the stock c.d. player because all the available dash kits do not replicate the very cool 'hi-tec' silver o.e.m. finish which I like, so I upgraded all the spkrs and added a sub and a 400 watt amp and this made a dramatic improvement. If down the line some after market co. gets it together and brings out a dash kit which looks exactly like the o.e.m., then I will upgrade the c.d. player at that time. Meanwhile, I can live with this setup. Im a musician and very picky about my sound system.
